- Snow, Ice, Hail & Blasting Winds - Hilleberg Soulo in the Lake District in Icy Winter Conditions
I head to the mountains of the English Lake District during a period of snow, ice and winter weather to put the Hilleberg Soulo through it's paces in the conditions it was designed for. My friend Tony (link to his channel below) and I head up into the stunning snow covered fells and hike up to the ridge, ascending through snow and ice to reach our camp location. Panoramic views of snow covered mountains, wintry and tumultuous skies and sudden gusts blasted us with particles of ice and hail throughout the camp. I cooked up some Reindeer Stew for my evening meal and enjoyed a nice chocolate stout to wash it down, whilst staying warm and cosy within the safety of my tent.
The next day, the snow and hail had consolidated into a frozen crust, meaning spikes were essential to descend safely back to the van. Finally, we headed back down to the village of Ambleside to enjoy a lovely English Breakfast before heading home.
This was a truly memorable wild camp and one which I will remember always.

They are good, I've build up my gear over nearly 26 years now - until I knew that this was a lifelong passion and was able to spend a little bit more on some other items - much cheaper pairs have served me well during my outdoor adventures during my life.

At 68 I'm already old and grey and still loving the outdoors, but as a soft southerner (Gloucestershire) not sure I share the same thrill of being in a snow blasted tent as much as you do! Love the safety tips you give in your videos and especially the message to pass it on to our children.
Welcome to the FB group Roger and thanks for watching the video! I do still enjoy my home comforts too ! I was lucky to learn from a young age from some very experienced people, only thing that has changed is becoming more risk averse and wary of sheer ridges the older I've got. How weird was that, I was going to park in the same car park on the same day but go up Ravens Crag instead of Red Screes and would have gone if the A66 was not shut with the snow. The scenery looked amazing with the snow I am meeting a friend on Wednesday but it looks like mud not snow! I like the sound of Reindeer stew mind and that 'chair' made out of your matt looked real comfortable. The colours in the sky was jaw dropping and I bet it was cold when the temperature did drop down. It sounded real rough in the night but the tent really stood up well to the conditions and I bet that hot stew went down a treat. Must admit, I did not know you will be 40 next month, I am 67 in March and I always thought you were older than me! Great morning to wake up too and spikes were a great idea, as I always find the decent from there is a bit iffy. Really enjoyable 'FULL' watch, great stuff and a very well deserved full English! Haha, I knew you were only 36 you scamster ! It was a great camp mate, the conditions really made it something else - cannot beat winter weather with the right equipment. A real stunning area and could have just sat and looked out at the views for hours - well I did really didn't I. Enjoy your hike mate and I look forward to the video. Have you thought about the british army softie trousers Chris ? They pack into their own pocket and are light and they dont half make a diference and you can pick them up for 20 quid in mint condition on Ebay....full length side zips too and really good quality..

That can only be described as pure joy!! Wow those views were stunning. I think anyone who doesn't get excited & dash outside straight away when its snowing isn't normal 😁.. I used to wake my daughter up in the middle of the night if it started snowing 😂 wellies on and still in Pj's, coat and outside we would be! Have to make the most of the little snow we get hehe...

Excellent stuff Chris. The eastern and far eastern fells looked lovely with their winter coat. I was bimbling around Branstree and Selside Pike next to Haweswater last Wednesday (ie 2 days ago) and High Street and Riggindale looked sublime with a covering of snow on the high tops. To me the snow always makes the mountains more....well mountainous and imposing. Chris why don't you move into the Kirkstone Pass Inn? Lol

Hi Nick, thanks for watching. The spikes are just cheap ones from Amazon - just search for "snow spikes" or "ice spikes". The version I use are pretty generic and I'd bet made in the same factory. They are basically like a giant rubber band with a set of chains / spikes in the middle - you just place your boot in (toe first) and pull the rear around the back of your boot - thus the spikes become tensioned around the sole - that's it. Real icy conditions with steep ascent demand proper crampons, but - they require stiffer boots in general - so these spikes serve me well for the most part with my boots. ATB, Chris

Cheers - thanks for watching. You don't need fancy gear to get out in winter conditions - unless it's really windy, that's the main thing and just keeping warm - but you don't need to spend a lot to do that, just layer up!

We both have Birthdays next month Chris and My oh my do I wish I was 40 again (57 For me back end of February) It Flies over Chris believe me so make the most of it Now mate.
I’ve never tried Reindeer stew but I love weird Foods and would definitely give it a go.

Hi Chris. That looked like a brilliant camp. Couldn’t agree more with you. I turn into a big kid when it snows and head straight to the hills for a camp. The colder and snowier the better. Hard to explain the feeling of being secure and warm in a tent in those conditions. Epic fun. How did you find the trekker chair. I recently got one myself. Great bit of kit for long nights in winter. Only concern is the plastic back supports on either side pushed down hard into the ground sheet. In very soft or rocky conditions I’d be worried about damaging the tent floor. So I stick any spare clothes or a sit mat etc under the corners to help take some of the load off. What do you think the excitement is when the weather is bad ? For me it’s knowing that without your kit and knowledge you’d be in a world of trouble, but been safe an warm high up in the mountains give one a special feeling that’s hard to explain to none wild campers!

Good question Phil - I can't really explain it - something about being up and out in the wilds - knowing that the thin layer of fabric and aluminium poles are the only things keeping you warm and dry - and just the excitement and suspense of wondering if the tent will hold up etc. Also, being nice and cosy in such a different environment, up and away from dreary life down in the city / rat race - is all part of it for me. I could go on...... ATB

I overnight in my Hilleberg Enan here in America. I swear by the comfort/warmth of my Thermarest XTherm inflatable air mattress with an R6.9 rating, which is as good as it gets.
I noticed those Delta pegs, good choice when you know you'll encounter strong gusty winds. Your Soulo is truly Fort Hilleberg as long as it's pitched, pegged, & guyout properly.

The Delta Ground Anchors are very good - second time I have used them now - maybe if they made a slightly more compact version they would be even better, as I'm not sure they're designed for wild camping. Wonderful video, as always. A little tip regarding the Real Turmat. If you flip out the ends it creates a more solid base if you leave the pack standing while waiting for the liquid to do its magic, but more importantly it also allows the water to soak through the powder more easily and avoid getting those dry areas at the edges near the bottom of the pack. Superb Video, I agree entirely that once you're zipped up inside those tents its great to know you're not going to be disturbed with a drama and nature can just do its worst. I was looking at those chair kits so I'be interested to know if you think its worth carrying??
Thanks for watching - I will take the chair on future trips - my friend Al (Bushman & Blue) put me onto it - really transforms being inside the tent being able to lean back whilst supported as I used to just either sit up or lie down. ATB.
