      Hi Paul, I know you're obsessed with low weight and that's an admirable pursuit, but, if you're swapping out a multi functional SAK for a single function Opinel, you're taking it a bit far.
      What if you need tweezers or a toothpick ? A screwdriver for your tripod ? Even a can opener ? It's a false economy....

    Hello Paul from NZ. I like your choice of pack, I have the same I am in the mountains over 40 times a year from one day tramps to 5 day tramps (we call it tramping not hiking). The pack is very light and easy on the back. I carry up to and over 15kg depending on how many days I'm in the mountains. I think that your videos are one of the best no nonsense on TH-cam . I have had over 50 years in the mountains 9 Years as a guide and I'm still out there doing it. So I know that you know what you are talking about. Well done. Keep the videos coming. 😀

    Its just the price with those dehydrated meals that puts me off. I'd want a takeaway level meal for that price lol. I'd rather take a pasta-n-sauce packet for 50p but each to their own

    • @zeshanhm
      @zeshanhm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can make your own, that’s what I do. Dehydrated food from the bulk section at grocery store, store a breakfast, lunch and dinner in a gallon bag. If you want to be extra light you can use the food bag from those backpacking meals, the bag is very strong can handle boiling water, cleans out easily.

    • @Yer_Da_
      @Yer_Da_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@zeshanhm Dehydrated isn't the same as freeze dried - those Summit to Eat meals are freeze dried which is expensive to make, they're more nutritous than dehyrdrated meals hence why they're popular with back packers.

    Superb videos - loved the hills for many years but amazingly only just starting to research wild camping and getting a list of gear together. The amount of kit available is overwhelming so videos like this are so helpful. Current deliberations include which stove, which water purification and powering/recharging phone. And realising that I’ll eventually have multiple tents, bags and other kit!

    Great video. There’s such a lot of gear out there it’s hard to know which is best. I did a five day hike in summer and didn’t bother with a sleeping bag. I just wore my down jacket and put my feet in the rucksack. Sometimes it’s good to see how little gear you actually need and sometimes it’s good to splash out on a few luxuries. Good luck on your trip.

    I'm researching packs to consider. It's a bit of a challenge to figure out the best size of pack to purchase. While I don't want to carry too much weight, I do need to accommodate some larger gear and a few extras like bear spray, firewood saw, heavier sleeping bag as the ground can be very cold, and fishing gear.

    I was a bit like this when I packed for my 5 weeks Canadian trip (Sept-Oct). 30 liters rucksack, under 10 kg weight, same tent (broke/repaired in 2 weeks), down sleeping bag (-7C). I took hiking boots and wellies and when, just before the flight posted hiking boots back to home. I think hiking boots better for Canada, wellies - for Scotland (hiked cuillin ridge in wellies). If you hike in the boots good thing to take - newspaper. For lightweight food: ground porridge and buckwheat

    Your setup is good, my kit weighs around that too with water and food added (3 season). In the summertime i can go down to 5 kg. I go ultralight mostly because of backproblems.
    As for kit: I'd add a first aid kit, including blister treatment. A belt with at least one storage pocket (unless the backpack got one) would mainly use it to store quick access stuff like a map/compass. Finally, i'd add some spices for the food since it ca be a bit bland.

      Cheers Stu. Quilts are the future for me. I still love my Alpkit down bag but the quilts allow me move freely as I fidget in my sleep. I can also stick a leg out if too warm. Thanks for watching.

    I'd highly recommend the Snow Peak range of titanium cups/pots! The 700ml cook pot fits a small gas canister and an msr pocket rocket 2 inside perfectly. It also nests with a 32oz nalgene

    well done, great editing. 8kg is a good weight for 3 days. My kit is twice that at 16kg however I carry more heavy duty items such as stainless steel water bottle, pot, cup and burner. Big knife, folding saw, multitool, small knife. Small fishing kit with slingshot. Heavy snow goretex jacket. Canvas tarp/bivy/poncho and my pack is a 55L 5.11 tactical rush 72 @ 2.4kg empty. Mines more of a camping, bushcraft, fishing kit with an emphasis on being heavy duty for bushcraft/survival skills. 16kg includes 3 days of food and 2L/kg of water. Thanks for sharing.

    New subscriber. I have been walking for many years but until very recently had never carried a tent. I now have a zephyros 2 and associated kit and tried it out for a couple of days walking and I think the total weight (including food and water ) was about 12kg. It was interesting watching your video to learn ways to cut down on the weight. I know the tent is not the lightest but as a first one it was good value. Thanks

    Nice setup and like the pot setup. Much like yourself earlier I use the Pocket Rocket 2 and Alpkit pot. I have a clip on windscreen for it that also fits perfect round the outside of the pot and find that makes a big difference in windy weather. Amazing that as equipment has less features and thinner materials the price goes up. Atb

      Really impressed with the windmaster. The lower flame height drastically improves wind performance and the boil times are great. The stove has won several awards in the last couple of years. I wish I could get thinner, lighter and my wages go up haha. Thanks for watching

    I’ve found a guy like me! Agree with everything in this video.
    I’m just a bit surprise by the down from Decathlon. French I am and I tried few of them in store, without finding the right one. I’m curious about this model which is maybe no more selling in France anymore.
    Thanks mate!

    2:16 In regards to your drinking system I can highly recommend 'Katadyn - BeFree' as an alternative. It's one of my favourite pieces of gear! I guess that it's pretty much the same concept as the 'sawyer micro squeeze', however Katadyns version seems a bit more simple and convenient to me. Putting it very simple it's a bottle shaped bladder with a filter. You just squish the water into your mouth whenever you're thirsty. It sure does take the hassle out of getting clean water on the go!
    Anyways, thank you for the video! It's always interesting to see what others put into their bags :-)

    I just came home from a 2 nighter. My pack weight was 16.3 kg. I'm in mountain terrain above the arctic though so I need a bit of extra clothes and warm bag and a sturdy tent. I use an older Arcteryx Bora 65 (made in Canada), Hilleberg Soulo, Marmot 3 season down bag and I go all luxury and bring with a porlex coffee grinder, aeropress, black diamond lantern (~350 g.), Hemingway short stories, Swarovski binoculars, fishing pole and lures, one Bamse extreme sleeping mat and one of those Exped UL inflatable mattresses that should not be trusted. Very interesting to see how light kit you have put together for a three nighter.

    Hi Paul. Great uploads, full of useful information and fun to watch. I use to do a lot of hiking on the brecon beacons many years ago and am looking to get back in to hiking and camping with a friend. I dont really want to spend a fortune on a new tent etc as we have just bought a family tent. Roughly how much all that kit cost so that I know how much I need to save. I watched your upload on the tent and will probably go for the wild country micro 1 unless you advise otherwise. Cheers Paul.
