In this video, I head out into the great outdoors in some horrendous weather, with thunderstorms, torrential rain and strong winds forecast. I had originally planned to camp on a Lake District mountain summit, but the forecast was for thunderstorms into late evening. The second location I chose forecast storms but finishing earlier. I took the Hilleberg Soulo Black Label tent which is designed to withstand extreme conditions.
Taking advantage of a break in the storms, I pitched the tent and settled down as the weather began to worsen. Storms passed overhead and the tent was hit by strong buffeting winds. As the thunderstorms passed over, they were replaced by constant strong winds with ferocious gusts and torrential, wind driven rain. The tent performed admirably and the 10mm poles really shone through as the structure remained rigid with the help of some ground anchors.
An evening meal from the shelter and security of the tent, whilst enjoying some fine craft beer. This was a wild camp to remember and a fantastic adventure in our great outdoors.

It’s often nice to be tucked up in the tent protected from the elements. It’s amazing what protection and warmth a thin sheet of material can provide. Nice camp Chris 👌⛺️

Theres nowt better when your cozy in the tent and its howling outside... My daughter didnt think so she woke up crying because of the noise, I said oh it just the wind while the tent was dancing around us

On Friday I decided against the Lakes because of thunderstorms and I drove passed this spot on the way to the Dales. I love being out in rough weather, it did me the world of good. I agree with all our comments on why you do it.

The Hilleberg Tent are really some of the bedst.Had a Nallo 2 for more than 17 years.never let me down.
Quality tents - very expensive, but superbly built and with a warranty to match.
Amazing video as always. As for extreme weather, here in Sacramento, California it is and has been approximately 110 degrees Fahrenheit for several days.

Great video the weather was wild I have always wanted to wild camp in a tent in the rain but at the ripe old age of 52 I think I would be all aches and pains sleeping in a tent overnight 😁the noises of the wild weather would help you sleep thank you for sharing

Never I was up in the day before the storm, stayed in a shepherds hut on beacon hill and could see across to the Lancashire beast while the storm was happening 😂 was exciting but I would never have guessed you were up there hahaha

Top film Chris, you're always educating. Thunderstorms? Never seek shelter under exposed rock overhangs. That 🌩 goes straight through. Love your content Chris ❤
Absolutely - 'thru-hikers' and people doing long distance trails can't avoid storms sometimes, so it's always good to know how best to deal with them. It's not great to be in a tent, anywhere exposed with lightning - and contrary to what people may think, can be safer heading below the tree line into a dense forest. I didn't want to risk being on an exposed ridge with the amount of storms which were passing through the south Lake District.
Absolute banger again Chris, really made me nostalgic watching this one! Among the first vids of yours i watched was you in the old Soulo, keeping the banter going with a gale outside! What a summer we are having so far lol.. dodged the T Storms this weekend and last, hoping to get out next weekend.. 🤞

Hi I just subscribed. Loved your vid. I used to camp when my three girls were little. We loved it. I used to also camp with a group. We would mountain bike and camp out. Had a Jack Wolfscin bike and hike twnt. Still have it.Loved it. Cant beat sound of rain and your all snug in ur sleeping bag.😊

It was a wild night Chris. Didn't expect that in July. Me and my Daughter pitched up a little bit nearer the gate from you. I'm glad you were wearing ear plugs, but given how wild the wind was I'm not sure you'd have heard my snoring. Maybe next time it'll be nicer weather and I'll say hi. 👍

Top video mate. Love this hill. Did my first solo wildcamp here blessed to be within a 30minute drive from it. On a clear day the views are beautiful looking to the 3 peaks. I will be out one day this week up here so hopefully this pitch is free, I've looked a bit further up and there is a few spots but nothing beats this spot for flatness. The only youtuber I know who makes badweather camping look soso relaxing👍

I love storms and my favourite sound is rain on a tent. I’m off for a little camp in the rain tomorrow. Only to a campsite not too far away but want to try out my new cloud peak 4 before I go anywhere more adventurous 😁

Wow, I’ll never set up alarm 2am to go out in a bad weather to check quy-delines haha. Before sleep and if awake in a night for sure. Delta pegs for sure! I try not to go out in very bad weather, but it can happen. Thanks for advice. That’s how it goes wfom person to person, from expert to novice.

I was camping on the Norfolk coast in the storms last week end ,luckily my tent survived with only a slightly slightly bent pole,others weren't so lucky and their tents got shredded 😢 ,I've got a tent with interior bracing straps (never had a tent with these before,it's a vsngo ),they seemed to help
They're great in some Vango tents - their TBS is designed to brace tunnel tents against lateral winds - seems to work well! Thanks for watching 🏕️👍

Haha, he was off having fun with his cousins - I wouldn't have taken him with a risk of lightning..... he can watch from the safety of the sofa. Surprisingly relaxing in the tent when the bad weather is heading in.
I need to get me a tool that tells the wind speed. This looks spooky.
bad weather is the best to camp in (rain/wind/snow) plus less people if any to contend with (i'm not anti-social) but camping in that kind of weather is best without having party people around or people screaming, it's bad out what do we do, go ask the guy/person next to us. meaning you/me. watching/listening to the weather can't be beat. sleep like a baby. plus food taste so much better in storms (rain or snow) just me i guess.

Yes I do - has the standard contents, I always pack a few more plasters in case of blisters, hay-fever tablets and painkillers 👍
Worst I've been in was Easter Sunday , 20-25 mph gusts and exposed on a summit . (Vid on my channel). The macpac stood up excellently , but nothing compared to what you've been in.

Great stuff Chris. What's the difference between the black label soulo and the reg soulo?
Nice one Craig. The BL has stronger materials - 10mm poles vs 9mm on the red. 18KG tear strength fabric vs 12KG on the red and thicker floor / inner fabrics....... in short, the red label is more than enough - but I just fancied selling some older gear to fund an even stronger version!
