Sharp Edge, Blencathra | Dangerous (WET) Conditions | Summit Beers | ** LANGUAGE ALERT **

  • An ascent of Blencathra via the infamous Sharp Edge in full wet conditions. Full HD. The Skiddaw Slate that the local rock comprises turned to a glass like finish in the rain. ** CONTAINS BAD LANGUAGE ** (Age Restricted) This is a SERIOUS Grade 1 scramble which is tough enough in good conditions - this should not be undertaken without the requisite experience and proper equipment. If in doubt, do not take the risk. There are frequent accidents on Sharp Edge, sadly many prove to be fatal. Do not underestimate how much the nature of a seemingly 'easy' scramble can change with the weather. Most groups that day turned back and many more were roped up, especially over the 'Bad Step'. Apologies for the foul language - no other people were in earshot and I think you will understand !
    Camped at Scotgate Holiday Park in Braithwate and slept in the Vango Equinox 350.

    Scary video but you've got to love the lady at 13 mins, her comment could be the most English thing I've seen in years. Clinging desperately to a wet rock, hundreds of feet up and she says "Well, it's nice to meet you anyway."

    It´s good that you showed the sense of exposure on this ridge: I´ve been over it a couple of times many years ago, first time was in dry conditions on a perfect sunny day, and that was bad enough; airy and exposed when walking along the very top, but in the rain or snow it´s a very different beast. After the bad step in gets easier but the route is best to the left. Unfortunately, too many people get in trouble in the fells by underestimating the weather conditions and sense of exposure and over estimating their own abilities. And regular hiking boots with hard wearing Vibram soles are CRAP on wet rock! Personally I would have waited for that party to descend rather than trying to pass them.
    I remember meeting a party of father and 2 young sons on Hellvelyn years ago, early in the year. We had crossed Striding Edge in low cloud and driving snow, topped out, and were descending to Dolly Wagon when we met them. They were dressed in lightweight football training jackets, jeans and trainers, soaked, freezing, cold and lost. They had Zero kit. The Dad asked the way to Striding Edge, but I said I wouldn´t let him go any further in the conditions and offered to take them back to their car, down in Glen Ridding. On the way down I asked what maps they were using, all he had was a little pocket map, no compass, no knowledge of how to navigate. But people think oh it´s England/Scotland, not the Himalayas, how bad can it be? they don´t realise how quickly the weather can change and the effect that has on conditions. I think if you´ve some experience in the mountains you have some responsibility to others. I reckon we saved Mountain Rescue a call out that day, and have done on several occasions before and since.

      +Alan Waterworth Alan, thanks for the comment. You're right about waiting to pass that group - in all honesty, my bottle had gone and I just wanted to get past them. I'm not trying to exaggerate in saying all other groups turned back that day - quite a few whilst we were having lunch at the tarn and I wondered what the problem was. I've got Meindl Borneo Pro boots with Vibram sole and I was just like walking on ice. Even the simple scramble to the summit plateau was a nightmare. Some of my mates who weren't there (and have done it with me previously) don't believe how bad it was (in the wet) and think I over stated it for the purpose of the video. I didn't. Shocking story re Helvellyn but not surprising sadly ! All the best.

      I wonder in such conditions if bare feet would have more grip than boots? I remember doing a Tall Ship voyage in the North Sea and when climbing the rigging we weren't allowed to wear gloves because the skin on our hands had the most grip in the wet.

    We did Sharp Edge yesterday. Although it was dry there had been a heavy dew and it was misty so the rock was wet. I wish I had seen your video first as I would not have attempted it. It is completely different when it is dry and the rock is affected by moisture like no other rock I am aware of. Striding Edge in the wet for example is still do-able but this IS NOT SAFE if the rock is wet. It took me 18 minutes previously in the dry and 46 minutes yesterday according to Strava. I post this AS A WARNING TO OTHERS. Thanks for your excellent and honest video which gets across exactly how tough this climb is in wet conditions.

      +Paul McGee thanks Paul - don't envy your traverse which by the sounds of it was tough. You're absolutely right, I was taken aback just how much it changed in the wet. Thanks for watching. All the best.

    Just wild camped at scale tarn with 2 of my mates then did sharp edge in the morning we got caught in the rain about halfway through and the wind picked up, had to stop and collect myself a few times and contemplated calling whatever emergency service helps you up there but manages to get it finished 😂. It was a terrifying experience and one that I hope everyone reading this understands to never risk being in. If you’re unsure do not attempt anything like this please.

    ''Jesus christ, that, is fuckin stupid" 😂 You mentioned something about sharp edge mate in your last video so now im here. One of the funniest scariest video's I've ever watched of yours. My fear of conquering sharp edge meter has just gone down to 0 again😂I've done striding edge but I think I might be pushing beyond my limits with this.

      Haha, I thought it'd a decent lesson..... And I learned one. The polished slate is like ice when wet........ One moment on the final scramble I slipped, only a foot or so, but I thought it was game over. Never again.

    I have watched this about 5 times now and each time I feel nervous for you! I did the edge a few weeks ago but the conditions were perfect. Warm, tiny breeze and dry. Even then it really got my attention. You will never know but by putting out this video you may possibly have made someone think twice about tackling Sharp Edge in the wet and that can only be good. Love all your output. 👍

    Hey.... brill video and respect to you. I did Sharp Edge in 2008, in middle of summer without a breath of wind and blistering sunshine and i was T E R R I F I E D the whole way over. I watched "Blencathra life of a mountain" on TV last night and just seeing it again brought it all back as I had forgotten just how horrendous it was. I came on to TH-cam today to show a colleague and clicked on your video. Watching it being climbed in wet and misty conditions I was sat with mouth agape the whole time. Again much respect! ( The guy in the vid is quite cute too :-)

    You've got some balls to do that in this conditions,that looks scary as hell.I can only imagine how slippery it was as it looks so bad on this video.I've seen some other videos on you tube and because they were so much shorter it didn't show the danger that waits there. Videos(lasting like few min) recorded in dry conditions shows just few bits from the path.Your video shows true reason why is it called Sharp Edge(or the old name Razor edge).At 16:20 your mate sliding on his arse and you looking down the drop it's one of the scariest thing in this video.One slip and ...don't want to even think about it.Full respect for you two
    Ps.When you said" We are over the worst(bad step)now it's the easy path" and boom there is this sharp edged vertical wall ;)

    Fantastic video, I had sweaty palms watching that! Did Sharp Edge about 15 years ago, in the dry, with some mates from the uni walking club. Exposure was no problem to me back then, Striding Edge was like a playground to me and I'd been over Crib Goch a few times, searching out the highest crests of the ridge, and going back if I realised I'd missed a more exposed part, to make it as exciting as possible. Even wanted to do Aonach Eagach but mates were put off by the wet weather (I wasn't, but no-one would go with me!). Sharp Edge was the most challenging one at the time though, especially the bad step, but nothing to actually stop me. As we were waiting for the last few to come across the bad step, one girl in our group slipped and tumbled down into that ravine, it was horrendous, actually seeing someone falling and bouncing off the rocks. I recognise in your video the exact spot, and that ravine (at 17:23). One of our group scrambled down to find her about 70ft down, miraculously all she had was a graze on her head; we all carefully scrambled down after them and walked out back to Threlkeld... stupidly, looking back, we went to the pub and then drove home, we should have taken her to hospital, but it turned out she was fine.
    After that day though, I've completely lost my nerve, though I didn't realise it until a few years later when I went back to Sharp Edge, in the dry again, and got cragfast about half way along, on all fours, too terrified to go any further. We retreated to Scales Tarn and continued to Blencathra via Scales Fell, but was rattled for the rest of the day, even a little down-scramble on the path back to Scales had me stuck. I've never been the same since, even Striding Edge spooked me when it never had before and I can't imagine ever doing Crib Goch again. It's a shame, I used to love the exhilaration of it.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ian, thanks for sharing that experience. Sounds like a nightmare and maybe you can gradually begin to build up your nerve again, I hope so anyway. I can see what you mean though....since having kids, I seem to have lost a lot of my bottle; either that or I've become naturally more risk averse. Would you mind if I shared your comments on my Facebook page? Thanks again, Chris.

      This is exactly the same as me. I am still part of a uni group, and because of that know a lot of competitive, experience and unfazed by the exposure, people.
      I've done crib goch twice and liathach and wasn't fazed, although I'd heard of someone in the club dying from falling from a scramble.
      My friend then had a horrible accident from scrambling and lost her leg. Then I fell on rocks coming down from the summit of Elidar Faw, but they were just balancing, like the top of Tryfan. I knocked my tooth out, banged my head and had a bruise milimetres away from my eye.
      Since then, I'm extremely nervous walking on rocks that balance others below and sometimes wobble, and I can't see myself scrambling again :(
      I ended up pretty much crouching down on all 4s across a rocky section :(

    Great vid. Before I undertake a new route I normally do a fair amount of research. Forums, TH-cam etc. They really help me decide whether a route is suitable for my group. I believe if more people took the time to do this fewer people would get into trouble in the hills. I am sure we will attempt Sharp Edge in the future but I am certain I won't take anyone up there in the wet. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for recording this! I was a little surprised to see people had chosen to scramble down it - seems like a poor choice in wet weather given the other routes available off the summit. Have done this in the dry and it's totally different - that said, you still need to watch out for patches of moisture around the grass and moss even if most of the rock seems dry.

    OMG! Well, I did sharp edge yesterday and climed down it as oppose to up and was my first experience on any kind of ridge. Never known what they entail, never watched a video and had no idea what to expect or anything. I have a morbid fear of heights and basically had a full on panic attack and absolutely balled my eyes out. It was one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever had. I literally felt like I was going to die, I was paralysed with fear. My company managed to push me through but I don't think they new how to deal with my breakdown 😅 If you have a severe fear of heights, my advice is just don't do it. If i had known and done at least a little research I wouldn't of had such an embarrassing and distressing ordeal. It makes my palms sweaty just watching this. I wish i was fearless like some people but I'll never shake my fear, because it's real, you really could die if you fall. Just one false move.

    That is a brilliant video! I’ve actually flapped it and turned back at the bad step twice which is like ice after rain. I did it on a dry day and the experience was totally different and you can just walk across it quite easily.
    The actual bad step comes up around 18 minutes in.
    Quite scary when you’re up there!

      @MCMOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jamie.... I normally get a bit of stick for it being over dramatic! I've done it when dry and found it a totally different beast in the wet - like ice as you say. ATB mate

    Great respect for you posting this film as a warning. Sharp edge is composed of Skiddaw slate and any slate is notoriously slippy in the wet. It's always worth checking in advance for information about wet conditions for any target route and if intending to do a scramble with possible wet conditions, then adopt the old mountaineers trick of putting an old pair of hairy wool socks over your boots. Sharp edge should be avoided in wet and/or windy conditions.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ann, yeah I know I made the wrong decision and know the slate is almost like ice when wet. I've been hiking and climbing since the age of about 14 - was just a combination of bravado and the fact a I had a GoPro with me!
      Never again in the wet though.

    Did it many moons ago in similar conditions with a group in tow. Passed a few folk on hands and knees totally froze. Fortunately I had a rope to help my group over the difficulties. It is a beast in wet conditions. I think you went off piste on foule crag.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've done it in dry weather and it was fine - the wet made grip almost impossible on the slate. I definitely went too far left on Foule Crag - lesson learned that day 👍

I’ve just watch a film and he said it was disappointing compared to all the ‘big I am ‘scrambles he’s had. and I though if one daft teenager just thinks it’s easy cos of that and copies him . 😡But you in comparison were far more respectful and showed the level of danger . Sharp Edge IS a serious scramble for its grade. Obviously grades are subjective but please don't underestimate the difficulty of this fine ridge. Its hands on all the way with an intimidating bad step that has been the scene of many a mishap, some fatal. I love this route but have turned back on a few occasions when it's slippery or windy. Unlike most grade 1 scrambles there is no alternative path or easy ground. Thousands of fell walkers of limited ability can and do enjoy this route without fear or danger but in no way can it be described as 'barely even a scramble'.

    • @paulmcgee180481
      @paulmcgee180481 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the dry it is ok for most of a reasonable ability but I agree with the video maker it shouldn't be attempted in wet conditions or even in the mist as it becomes treacherous.

    I did this last week in the rain and it was an utter nightmare. Probably ok in very dry conditions but on the bad step I felt like a jet propelled dog on ice! I decided to turn back there - good sense is the better part of valour. Believe me reversing this is as difficult as getting up! I've done Striding Edge, Crib Goch and the CMD Arete on Ben Nevis but this was the worst of the lot and I'm used to climbing.

    A way of dealing with the slippery rock is to wear socks just on the dodgy bits. Carry cheap wool builders socks just for that (Amazon, ebay) as they wear through very quickly. I tried it once on a scamble. It's unpleasant but better than a slip. I read that climbers used to wear them over boots but I can't get them over mine.

My 29 year old son wants to do it with me now and I have said ONLY in the same dry, wind free conditions as I am now 61, so not wanting to take any chances. Looks like you had a chest and head held camera, with possibly a self stick? I have just bought an APEMAN action camera with all the accessories, as I want to film it but keep as much as possible tightly griped to the rocks! I done this today with two mates, two of us our first scramble. Worse weather than this. Hail and 35-40mph wind, I can’t comprehend how we managed to scale it and how difficult, mentally & physically challenging it was. I agree, with any sane mind, don’t do this in wet conditions!
