I'm surprised by how those New York Highlands look like Scotland or even the Lake District. The hills are not giant, only just a little bit higher and even seem to have the same rolling look at times.

Enjoyed this video, you are hillarious, so refreshing to watch a guy winter camping who isn't an expert at everything. I live in Perth, Western Australia and we have been having temps in the 40's, Celsius that is, man I would give anything for some snow right now. Have fun.

    • @BrooksandBirches
      @BrooksandBirches  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Elizabeth!! Yeah I'm definitely not an expert at all, took me a couple of years to work up the courage to go winter camping in the first place so I figured I might as well share the experience from the perspective of a first timer. The 40's?!?! That is way too hot for me! Hopefully you are not too close to those bush fires I've been reading about? All the best, Rob

Right off the bat I was impressed with you crossing that stream. I thought, Wow, he's in good physical condition. So subbed you right there.
As a 71 yr old woman I'm thinking you are going to die! Not enough fire wood, skimpy tent with holes at both ends, tiny grill for your steak...(yum)...bla, bla, bla. HA! But as the video went on I was very impressed with your fire place, dry tent, full tummy and spur of the moment, adventurous attitude and you were knowledgable about the kinds of wood, your skill chopping wood and lighting the fire was great, leveled the coals to cook your delicious steak.. No plate but who needs one. He man style. Ha. The scenery was fabulous and you did perfect filming it. Didn't make me dizzy, just enough time to let me enjoy the gorgeous location. Over all you kept me in suspense expecting a disaster any moment ha! Especially after getting tipsy on that charcoal lighter fluid. Ha. Alcohol is really bad in cold weather. You could pass out and hypothermia get you. So relieved you lived through it and we got to enjoy your escapades. Make a list next time and don't forget anything important. Now then enough mothering. How you found your way in and out of there was excellent. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.

Great sense of humor and character. Just joined and watched a few vids. A few friendly pointers if you’re going to keep doing winter bushcraft:
    1) Get a proper buck saw. You’re expending too much energy for too little result.
    2) use other logs to prop large logs when cutting. It will reduce binding the blade.
    3) if you’re building a fire for warmth- build a long fire. Base logs 3 1/2 to 4 feet in length.
    4) add a heat reflector (single stack of logs 2 to 3 feet high) on the far side of your fire. It will... wait for it... reflect the fire back at you.
    5) prep your bitch bark. Warning it in a pocket is great. But you need to break up the fibers. Crush it in your hands then rub you hands together. Your goal is to split the fibers increasing surface area. The finer the fibers the less thermal capacity they will have. Meaning the less heat they can absorb before catching fire. This is helpful when dealing with wet materials or... dodgy fire steel.
    6) research and practice using an axe/hatchet better. I’d hate to hear or see you get injured from using poor technique. If you thought the hike was tough on the way in image limping out with a blood stump of a leg.
    -Cheers

      Oh!
      7) use pine bows to make hasty wind breaks. You can easily and quickly weave them together and tie to your 550 cord to keep it on place.

    1. Use that nice handy stump to brace that log.
    2. Get a Silky Big Boy saw, especially if you're a beginner.
    3. Prep four times as much wood for your fire.
    4. Screw the fire steel next time. Bring a pack of Bic lighters. Ain't no sin.
    5. Stack your fire stones to catch the wind and channel it up into the fire.
    6. Ten points for Montreal Steak Seasoning. Essential!

That's not a bad idea to be honest mate, two problems would be that I bet that spot will be heaving with people in the summer and also the bugs won't be great with the tarp set up

  • @woodstockpotter

Thanks for the video; looks like a good camp to me. Nice job with the tarp setup, fire ring and using boughs to stop the wind through the tarp. The simple solutions are often best. Steak like that is good anytime but better over an open fire in the woods! Forgive me the hint but I discovered sometimes a handful of butterfly paper clips are handy for managing tarp issues.
