Basic training is a unique experience no marine ever forgets. I would describe it as the worst fun you'll ever have.

Can't speak about "recruit training" but back in '69 Army "Basic Combat Training" wasn't even slightly fun. It was very, very much like the first 45 minutes of Full Metal Jacket except nobody was killed.

If you ask, the vast majority of Marine vets HATED Boot Camp (myself included), or at least the first 6 weeks.
On the flip, the vast majority would do it again tomorrow if given the chance(myself included). Unfortunately, age and bad knees prevent it.

@@thecollective1584 The only positive things I can say about Army BCT (in 1969) are: a) I loved rifle range (first time I had ever fired a weapon) and b) it taught me what I was able to endure. And no,I wouldn't go through it again unless my country was literally under attack. And my age might be a factor as well.

For those folks who want to know whats up with all the screaming? Here is your answer...War is confusing, chaotic and stressful, to perform well in combat you need to be able to perform under highly stressful, confusing and ever changing situations......Marine Corps boot camp tries to simulate this stress as much as possible.

And make sure the packages are picked up by the target recipient and not get stolen by the enemy (neighbors) See? it's a very challenging job. A combat EVERYDAY !

Thank God for our military. A U.S. marine literally saved me from drowning at the beach at Camp Pendleton (San Diego county, California) when I was a teenager. My family and I were there visiting my stepdad's brother-in-law, a marine, and we were spending the day at the private beach when I decided to do some swimming and body surfing and got pushed under by a big wave. I was a good 5-7 feet down trying with everything in me to push myself up, but the waves held me down and I was being pulled backwards by what must've been a rip tide. Luckily for me, a marine who'd been lifting weights and admiring my body surfing technique, saw me go under and jumped into action when I never resurfaced.... I would not be here today if that marine didn't see me go under. Id already breathed in some water and I couldn't hold my breath any longer when I saw a shadow above me and felt strong arms grab me and pull me up. By then, I was a good 8 or more feet down and had drifted quite a ways out. I would have drowned and been swept out to sea had it not been for that marine and I never knew his name... It traumatized me for life and I never body surfed again. To date, I can't go out deeper than my waist when I go to the beach and stopped swimming in the ocean because of it. I will forever have nothing but the utmost love and respect for the U.S. Marines. Thank you for sharing. God bless America.

I was stationed at MCRD (admin) for 2 years I saw this stuff day in and day out. If you're thinking about joining remember the marines are not for everyone. About 30% or more of the recruits that start will not finish. But I always told the recruits I would process out at least you gave it a shot. But remember to give it everything you have. I was 5'6 and 120lbs when I went through training. Lots of people told me I would never make it and I did. It's all about your mental state. If your mind is committed everything else will fall into place.

Take an Inside Look At Life For Marine Recruits at the Marine Recruit Depot, San Diego.
Welcome to the United States Marine Corps Recruit Training at the Marine Recruit Depot, San Diego. MCRD San Diego's main mission is the initial training of enlisted male recruits living west of the Mississippi River. Over 21,000 recruits are trained each year. The Depot also is the home to the Marine Corps' Recruiter School and Western Recruiting Region's Drill Instructors School.

    • @imhypersniper

This process is a lot more humane than it was in my era. During Vietnam, training time was cut because of the dire need for replacements in the field. That's where the Full Metal Jacket intensity comes from. The Corps wants recruits to succeed but they also want to spot those who can't make it or might be problems before live fire exercises start. That's a big part of induction "hell night". Most are terrified and confused. A few truly get it and take it in stride. A good DI can spot the wash-outs usually in that first half hour. That said, in an era where "boots on the ground" is no longer a deciding factor, we are still teaching recruits to fight WW1, but this is only initial training. From here they move on across the country to various specialty schools ranging from cyber warfare to PSYOPS. This is just the foundation and literally "the basics". The Corps has changed since my day and I see good changes. Respect for the individual is growing as is the idea of looking for personal strengths and abilities to be cultivated and developed. The DIs are not beasts. They seek to develop spinal-reflex actions that will keep recruits alive.

+Mikephx See also the Army's "Shark Attack" and the Navy's "Un-Smurfing", assuming they still exist. Last time I was at the Veteran's Hospital I had (unsurprisingly) a long wait, so I read the latest Army Times. They had a big point-counterpoint about the replacement of Drill Sergeants with Training Platoon Sergeants in rate training school. It was basically "kids these days are all internet and ipods and ain't got no gumption harumph harumph" versus "kids these days are all internet and ipods and can fix a drone warrior but we'll unnecessarily piss off the best ones and make them refuse to re-up if we yell at them all day".

+harris3693 Attitude counts for everything. Recruiters are looking for their third stripe but they don't want people who can't make it. Have the conversation and be honest. Ask ALL questions you have and demand real answers.

this is watered down for viewers. I also watched Marine recruit training during the Nam era. The DIs were totally treating recruits humanely, none of that "aye aye sir" or "this recruit". The only thing that i hear from folks from the old corps were hitting recruits. Guess that's frowned upon now

Nobody realizes how hard it is for them as well during this, they have to maintain 100% formality during the whole 9 weeks they have, explain everything to 60ish people who have no idea what's going on, and then make sure they're doing nothing wrong. It's amazing. Thanks to all of the now Marines who are in this video and all of the instructors, you've all done a great service to our country.

I have been wanting to join the military since high school ( graduated 2018 ), I just need to get down to the required weight ( never was good at letting go of junk food til recently ) to go to boot camp. Loosing weight is hard. but I started my current diet at 330lbs a few months ago. i am a male 22yrs at 5'5. I am now 284lbs. I spoke to a recruiter over the phone a few days ago, and said I'd need to get down to at least 173lbs in order for boot camp. Looking to Join in winter 2023/2024. depending how quickly I loose weight.

Boot camp is about getting rid of your bad habits and get you mentally ready on what's to come for you.But the Marine Corps is not for everybody, thats why we only have about 200,000 men and women that are in the Marine Corps in the US.
