My sister in law went to college in the US with and was in the same friend group as a current king in Cameroon. They had no idea he was a prince, seemed like a pretty humble guy (drank/smoked weed etc) and he apparently brought back many western ideas. He is the first King in a line dating back to the 14th century to only take one wife (previous kings had over 100 wives at certain points). Too bad Kim didn’t bring back what he learned as well.

This is by far one of the better documentaries I've seen on N Korea. You all went in with a death wish secretly filming stuff, but you made it out the other side
I sometimes think his stay in Switzerland made him become more extreme as a result; You're in a country with a working democracy, beauty, happy and free people etc., you subconsciously realise North Korea is actually a really, really horrible place but you're just as much as a prisoner to it as every other citizen. Except you're part of the family so there's even more of an eye on you. Imagine being a teenager, getting to find out about your hobbies, like basketball. You make a couple friends, people treat you like a normal person, there is peace. Then you get sent back to the dictatorship you're greatly negatively affected by, too. That must be ao traumatising and frustrating. I am entirely sure he has severe narcissistic personality disorder. Probably experienced extreme trauma, pain and anxiety all his life (once again, in contrast to the way life in Europe is like). Your brain juat restructures. Maybe he even cried when he knew he was gonna be next in the line of reign because he never wanted any of this. Who really does? I have no sympathy for his actions whatsoever, he is a horrible person. But everyone ia a result of their environment and he really never had any other choice than to become the person/monster he is today. Other citizens have the opportunity to try and escape this place/SYSTEM, at least. He has no choice, never had one. Just like all his other family members. And when his brother tried to escape, he juat executed him. Probably jealous of his strength and that he has a better moral character than him (criticising the system).

Yeah Kim didnt learn much at all at in switzerland in history classes I guess, there were some leaders in this world who kept a ton of power and were unlimited leaders of the nation while also driving the nation towards enormous prosperity for all the nationals and huge advances in society, culture, infrastructure, science and technology and so on for what people genuinely loved those leaders. What fascinates me is the English level of their guides; they speak very naturally and even know fairly recent slang terminology. Which means they must have learned English at least in part by looking at modern Western media. I cannot imagine that they would have studied it and not come to some realization that what their country spouts is not in part a fiction. Does their national pride overcome that? Or is it perhaps that they know that they are in an inescapable situation and are just utilizing their (relatively speaking) extremely high levels of education just to survive? They would likely be in a better position than 99% of the populace by having done so well academically. Do they wish they could converse with the tourists they are designated to guide more freely? Or do they agonize over their job knowing that the tourists are going to ask questions which they will be forced to deflect? It's mind boggling to even imagine the thought processes these people have to go to just to survive day to day. My heart reaches out to them.

You're in a country with a working democracy, beauty, happy and free people etc., you subconsciously realise North Korea is actually a really, really horrible place but you're just as much as a prisoner to it as every other citizen. Except you're part of the family so there's even more of an eye on you.
Imagine being a teenager, getting to find out about your hobbies, like basketball. You make a couple friends, people treat you like a normal person, there is peace. Then you get sent back to the dictatorship you're greatly negatively affected by, too. That must be ao traumatising and frustrating. I am entirely sure he has severe narcissistic personality disorder. Probably experienced extreme trauma, pain and anxiety all his life (once again, in contrast to the way life in Europe is like). Your brain juat restructures. Maybe he even cried when he knew he was gonna be next in the line of reign because he never wanted any of this. Who really does?
I have no sympathy for his actions whatsoever, he is a horrible person. But everyone ia a result of their environment and he really never had any other choice than to become the person/monster he is today.
Other citizens have the opportunity to try and escape this place/SYSTEM, at least. He has no choice, never had one. Just like all his other family members. And when his brother tried to escape, he juat executed him. Probably jealous of his strength and that he has a better moral character than him (criticising the system).
Every single day you make a choice to continue. He makes that choice. He had his brother and many others killed. He could absolutely do the right thing. His knowledge of different makes him a MONSTER
Yeah Kim didnt learn much at all at in switzerland in history classes I guess, there were some leaders in this world who kept a ton of power and were unlimited leaders of the nation while also driving the nation towards enormous prosperity for all the nationals and huge advances in society, culture, infrastructure, science and technology and so on for what people genuinely loved those leaders. I guess he's too weak to lead by an example instead of fear.
By the way I have yet to see a working democracy... esp. when it comes to switzerland, people who think its a true working democracy have no idea what kinds of people live there or study there, people who are actually the richest people in this world, far richer than Elon Mosk or other clowns.
that does make sense yes i wouldn't want to be supreme leader of NK if i were in his shoes but how do i know? it is not like i know him personally. Forget the mental, feelings, trauma etc.. Most clips are publically available clips released by the North Koreans, I've seen them many times before. They did include some video they took that was closely monitored by North Korea and approved. No life was risked, not even close.

What fascinates me is the English level of their guides; they speak very naturally and even know fairly recent slang terminology. Which means they must have learned English at least in part by looking at modern Western media. I cannot imagine that they would have studied it and not come to some realization that what their country spouts is not in part a fiction. Does their national pride overcome that? Or is it perhaps that they know that they are in an inescapable situation and are just utilizing their (relatively speaking) extremely high levels of education just to survive? They would likely be in a better position than 99% of the populace by having done so well academically.
Do they wish they could converse with the tourists they are designated to guide more freely? Or do they agonize over their job knowing that the tourists are going to ask questions which they will be forced to deflect?
It's mind boggling to even imagine the thought processes these people have to go to just to survive day to day. My heart reaches out to them.

We are supposed to be living in an enlightened world. How then can this be allowed to happen? Before watching this video, I watched another about North Korean people that were in the South when then war began, 65 years ago.
They have been unable to see, touch, or even hear from their husbands, wives, children, and parents for 65 years! All because of the north.
It breaks my heart, and my own struggles in life diminish to nothing in comparison.
