    I'm now 73 years old and graduated from Coast Guard boot camp in June 1969. It was the experience of a lifetime and brought back mostly great and a couple of painful memories. It was well worth it. And believe it or not, boot camp back then was much worse than a lot of what was shown in this video. After boot camp, I was stationed aboard the USCGC Ingram in Norfolk, VA. After a unique set of assignments, I was promoted to Yeoman First Class during my first 4-year enlistment and finished undergraduate and graduate school while on active duty in 1976. I also spent several years in the Coast Guard Reserves. I owe my life and a diverse and successful number of careers in the public and private sectors to the USCG. I am proud of the men and women who serve this vital military organization, the nation's oldest and continuous sea-going service. SEMPER PARATUS!

    My childhood friend worked his ass off to become a Canadian coast guard. He made everyone so proud, but he had a wakeboard accident that absolutely destroyed his leg and ability to walk, subsequently loosing said employment. Saddest story I know, and even sadder seeing what he had to go through to get where he was. He has since been able to become an EMS first responder, so that will do. Can't keep down a legend.

    The Coast Guard is so underrespected. Not only do they have to be a military organization, but they are also every form of first responders out there. They aren't just people who drive boats, they're policeman, they're paramedics, they're firefighters, they're servicemen. They do more than just sit in the water all day and night, and I respect that.

      Technically the US Coast Guard isn't a component of the US Armed Forces. It was a part of the US Treasury Department until 1967. After that it was part of the US Dpartment of Transportation. Then in 2003 it was placed under the Department of Homeland Security.

    UPDATE : After he lied multiple times about his leave, found out that he was actually discharged right before 12/2023 because of issues with, to nicely put it, with his commading officers. Seems he didn't learn much after all. Very discouraged of him now because he had so much benefits ahead of him only to now throw them away. As one person said, "it's a problem with today's generation. They can't seem to realize great things ahead because they are blinded by the "screen" few inches in front of their face." Oh well....his loss ! ! !
    ========
    Proud to say my stepson just graduated from this academy (July 2023). Yes, he wanted to get out. Yes, he said it was difficult. But most importantly, yes, he is an accomplished and proud part of the USCG.
    Thank you, Cape May and thank you video crew for publishing this so we can all receive a small glimpse of what it means to become and be a United States Coast Guard.
    Congratulations to all who have and will continue to make it through. May God bless you each of you the strength and wisdom.

      If you don’t have a nice thing to say about our generation, then don’t say it. Don’t call a copout blame a screen for his attitude issues, because that’s not an individual thing. That’s a parenting thing.
      Also, he just did something that I literally can’t do because I’m disabled on my left arm and only have 4 fingers. I can’t do a pull-up!

  • @lmm3150
    @lmm3150 ปีที่แล้ว +176

    Some information that they missed is: They can send you back as many weeks as they want as discipline. But it also depends on what you’ve done. When you get set back you change to the company before you. Also, you do get breaks near the end of boot camp. The first time is in week 7 or 8 when you can go to the exchange and restaurant on base and also use your cellphone. The second time, you may go off base. However they do not allow you to go to the beach, because they can’t risk anyone getting injured. Once there was a girl who got badly hurt. I think she broke some bones? Anyways, I believe she was in boot camp for about 20ish weeks. But she finally graduated with my brothers company last year. Another thing is; someone got sent back to week 2 i believe for flicking the company company commander on the bus right after he graduated. Also, credits to my brother for this info!

You had no control over your life and you didn't need to practice self-control or self-discipline or anything, they took care of that for you, but then when you come home.......no one's there to discipline you and you no longer have the self-discipline you once had, you're like those children with extremely strict parents I mentioned earlier, running around, finally free!......and a mess
      And *none* of it is your fault, the system only cares to prepare you for whatever you're going to be facing during service, not to prepare you for what you're going to be facing once you go home, after you have served....after they broke you down..........

    That Petty Offficer Gunn is a tough lady. I believe those drill instructors get a real joy having that much power. I served in the Marine Corps and the Navy. I remember getting chewed out by drill instructors a lot while in the Marine Corps. The Navy was a little easier than the Marine Corps. I served at Paris Island South Carolina for the USMC and I served at Great Lakes Recruit station in North Chicago.

      They are military and they server under both the Dept of Homeland Security and the Dept of Defense, just depends on the mission at the time.
      Not only are they the real military - they are the oldest version of the military, they existed long before any other branch of the military.
      They get a lot of shit because people don't know much about them but they are more hardcore than most of the branches. I still say the Marines is above them but they are right up there in 2nd place with the Army/Navy, easily.

    • @curtiss744
      @curtiss744 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The coast guard is military they have the same rank structure E-1,E-8, O-1 etc , Geneva convention military ID , the only difference is that they’re part of the department of homeland security instead of department of defense , it is legally by design that they’re not part of DOD it’s because they’re the only military branch allowed to perform law enforcement but during wartime they’re part of the navy .
