Having 15 ranger buddies show up really tells you how close these guys are. That’s a very tight knit group and I bet if he ever needed to call them again they would all still be ready for that call. I wish I had friends like that.
I've said this elsewhere, but I think it bears repeating - if only one dog on the block barks at the mailman, nobody is focusing on the mailman. The chief was likely trying to cover his ass, but it's also possible that his subordinates were more resentful towards the ranger than the gang members for forcing them to enter a shithole neighborhood to deal with stuff they were able to previously ignore. In an extreme case of irony, It's likely both the beat cops and the criminals would agree that the ranger's presence was a disruption to their normal routine.

We are supposed to think the dealers and the gang bangers are the bad guys and don't get me wrong they can be but they wouldn't get away with a lot of this if people in power were not getting paid off. We should of started a war on corruption instead of drugs, we could of actually won that one

This story reminds me of how bullying is handled at public schools. The victim reaches out to teachers, only to be ignored. As soon as the victim has had enough and fights back, they get chastised and told they should have reported it to the school faculty. Both kids are suspended, but the bully who doesn't give a shit about school anyways, sees it as a free vacation.
I told my kid if he got expelled for fighting a bully he would get ice cream on the way home. He put the first one against a wall and never had another problem.
My 12 yr old had a problem last yr with a “bully”…/I told him ignore whatever he says, you should NEVER care what some stranger thinks/says…but if he puts his hands on you or threatens you, IMMEDIATELY crack him right in the nose….a few days go by and I get a call at work from the school and had to go pick my boy up….I walked into the office and there was my Jake sitting at a table with another kid, a big fat kid with a bloody nose and had been crying, lol…the kids parents were in there too and I immediately saw why the kid was a asshole….felt bad for him, but I guarantee he’s done trying to bully others…I hope

Problem is they’ve always looked cool. Chicago was one of the earlier big hubs for gangs and to this day we make movies about bootlegging gangsters. The only thing that changed was the race of gangsters. The earlier US had a lot of gangs even before automobiles were a thing. There’s a cool documentary about it
I’ve never thought gangs looked cool at all. I have friends that grew up with me in the suburbs that ended up joining a gang and it always struck me as idiotic. Something wrong with the way you were raised if you think gangs look cool
Why it is ok for the Italian gang to look cool, which they already came from money and doesn't need a gang, but gangs like crip and blood that came from very poor family are seen as thugs?
Police: "sorry we can't do anything..." Also Police: "why didn't you call us?! Defending yourselves was a reckless move and could have got people hurt!"

I never comment on YT but it’s actually maddening how this video blames the rise of the crips in Tacoma on an over-emphasis on “community policing” being too soft on crime or whatever

They didn't doublespeak. What they meant was, if Foulk had called the police, that the police would have responded and likely detained Foulk's men and weapons, so that the gang member wounding incident would have never occurred, but instead that when the gang members attacked un-opposed, that the great detectives of the area would have got some hot press time and been "hot on the trail" of those evil gang members for months, likely requesting more funding from down state at the same time. As someone in the army, I really feel like the police are a sub-par organization. They tread the space between soldier and lawyer and their training in both departments is very lacking. Not to mention their physical fitness standards being lower than even the Air Force… I’m my opinion the army national guard should work with the police. My dad met this one person back in the 90s while living in Pretoria, we'll call him John. John was a former Recce (South African Special Forces), and had taken part in multiple operations in Angola. Even though he was according to my dad a fairly humble and rather kind person, he suffered alot from PTSD, always sleeping with a Beretta under his pilow. John lived in a lower middle class area with some gang activity and the area suffered from constant breakins (this will be important later) The story goes that at some point, one of Johns best friends/ neighboor came to him for help, he had been robbed in the middle of the night, with his family injured severly and hus watch stolen. John went, found out who the gang was that had committed the crime and left in the middle of the night. He returned the next morning with the money and gold watch. Never answered how he found it or what he did. Then it came out some gang members had been murdered and an investigation was launched before being quickly shelved and then written off. The gangs tried to retaliate (or it could have been some normal criminals) and tried to break into his house only for him to shoot 2 of them. After that, not a single criminal or gang came within 5 blocks of Johns house and he quickly became known as the boogyman of the area tl;dr: dont fuck with combat vets
I live in the country. There are redneck versions of thugs here, but the difference is everyone kinda knows who they are. When I was little, my dad was working in the mines in WV, and we lived in KY. It's pretty common for people to drive about 2 hours one way to go to work. These individuals knew this too. Well, my mom heard people talking and basically probing the house to see who's home or if it'd be a good place to rob. This wasn't a neighborhood; we were about a mile away from anyone, so the motive was pretty clear. Two nights after that, my dad took off work and parked his truck at my uncle's house to make it look like any other workday. Long story short, he killed a 23-year-old opiate fiend halfway through the window, heard footsteps running away, and shot in the direction of the sound. My sister said she still remembers the gun going off. I was just a baby, so all this was told to me secondhand. Apparently, the cops asked my dad why he didn't kill the other guy or something along those lines. Anyways my Dad is the the stereotypical type of redneck you're probably thinking about right now. very calm very kind but will fucking kill you if you fuck in and around his home. Anyways, idk why i sat n typed all of this. Its actually something i forgot about, so much that i don't think my wife even knows about lol. I wish i could tie it up nicely into a lesson but its pretty obvious. Dont fuck with men especially in their home. There's a joke that says something about you dont fuck with a place that has a car engine hanging in a tree, or a transmission in a bathtub because that's where a gun lives. its Jeff Foxworthy, holy fuck thats a name i haven't seen in awhile. I pasted this in the main thread too after typing it here. to justify all the typing mostly but yea less mystery same logic.
When seconds count, the police are just 30 minutes away. The police rarely prevent violent crime from occurring, they're mostly there to clean-up, after the fact, and file reports.
That’s literally what their job is. Bodyguards protect. Policemen are paper pushers. Their role is to present evidence in court to bring a criminal to justice. That’s why you always hear ppl complain that the police take too long to arrive on scene at a shootout. They’re only gonna collect shell casings and testimonials from the witnesses. If any
The amount of restraint it took for these Rangers to hold their position, consider their background, and not just actually smoke all these idiots is commendable. Handled the situation the absolute best way possible. These dudes could have easily started stacking bodies but didn’t wanna deal with the hassle.
I know Bill personally, this was a very accurate depiction of what went down that day. I remember Bill showing me the bullet holes. He later pretty much owned that block of Ash Street. I was stationed across the airfield from these guys at the time. We all heard about it, but never any details. It kind of became urban legend and grew in size and scope over time. Thanks for sharing the actual details of the incident.
Rangers! They went up against not just one, but several.. oh boy that was a silly move!!! haha I was expecting there to be a complete pile of gang members when the dust cleared. They got lucky- but then again, if you're in a gang-related shootout, it's not like you can go seek medical assistance. I served with a Ranger- They're not to be trifled with. :D We joined Navy boot camp at the same time... I was 17 and acted as most 17 year olds did.. and this other guy was very chill, friendly, but take no sh**. One day we were just chatting about how his prior service only let him get an automatic E3 in the Navy, but he wasn't too bothered about it. He said the REAL hassle, likely more than what it was worth... WAS that he had to wear his Bronze Star or he would be out of uniform by regulation. A few people took notice of his ribbon (and probably taken aback on the Jumpmaster pin as well) all like, "WHOAH hold on there." When confronted, he would usually reply, "I was just doing Airborne things, but it was just a case of I had to use the "facilities" (toilet) and that would have been hard to do with people shooting at us... So I had to go poo and confronted the enemy, so we could have a break." It was obvious he was prior service, but to see an E3 with a Bronze Star was something else. He would joke to the tune of, "I joined the Navy so I dont have to be put in the position to get another one." This was also around the same time a newly graduated recruit decided to wear a Navy SEAL pin and got in deep doodoo... So maybe the recruit commanders were just being overly cautious. But the Ranger (Now Navy Seaman) was like, "yup... it's mine. and never got pissy" :P
Yeah, that does happen! And most Rangers would be like, "oh yeah, some idiots came to our BBQ and it got out of hand for a bit, but then we settled things."
Yeah because it probably didn't happen like that. 15 rangers and not 1 death? I'm not talking about running away to the hospital and dying. Their whole gang shoulda been dead, scattered across the yards and street like beer cans... Didn't happen so either the rangers were trash at shooting, which I doubt, or it just didn't happen!
As an older black man, I'm gonna follow these guys example and get some of my friends and we defend and take back our neighborhoods from these thugs. Because the police aren't doing it
I was in elementary school at that time and lived on the outskirts of Tacoma. We had gang members chase someone through our playground during recess and shots were fired. Okay, as someone who was living in Tacoma back when this happened, let me tell you that TPD was not struggling to get the gang problem under control, they basically wrote off the Hilltop neighborhood and turned a blind eye to any and all crime within the boundaries of that part of town while cracking down on crimes outside of it. Things got so bad that people were writing letters to the editor of the Tacoma News Tribune demanding to know why the police were driving right by drug deals in progress, or prostitutes screwing johns right in the open in alleyways, and literally doing nothing. In the late 90's, local landlords got so fed up with the problems in Hilltop that they filed a class action lawsuit against TPD, the mayor and city council, and the city of Tacoma to force them to clean up Hilltop, which FINALLY happened in the early 2000s. The area still has higher crime than most of the city, with the notable exceptions of the Salishan neighborhood on the east side of town and nearby Spanaway, which is now meth dealer central for the entire county. I know one person who lived in Hilltop during the 90s and repeatedly called 911 to report drug deals on the front porch of the duplex he was living in, only to be told by 911 dispatch (and this is an exact quote), "There are no drug dealers in Hilltop. If you don't stop filing false reports, we're going to send an officer out to arrest you!" He was told this, and other equally nasty threats, on a regular basis. EDIT: TPD "found" the money to hire more cops because they were taking kickbacks from the Feds to "fight" the drug war on the one hand and bribes from the dealers to look the other way on the other.
Netflix had a special about a couple cops in New York who finally got on the take from some local gang members. Sounds like the people out there in Washington never got busted for it but the same exact stuff happened. Money money money, just follow the trail.
Yes! @@drownthepoor The same is applied to national military, the soldiers enlisted today aren't infallible when it comes to motives, most join because they are dangled a shiny keychain of promises and advantages that they otherwise would struggle with obtaining through regular civilian work and as such even if they go through basic training most times aren't the mentally unrelenting forces you paint them to be, most of what keeps them from deserting is the fact that they are actually obligated by law to remain unless the situation calls otherwise whereas contractors are not. Also most mercenaries already are ex-military, the few that aren't are the ones that get commissioned from rich people or criminal groups since most serious PMCs know they are putting their money on the line if their employees don't meet their specific quality control and they must ABSOLUTELY make a profit, having soldiers that won't fight or protect your merch is a sure way that you'll never hire them again and that PMCs want to avoid at all costs.

I learned about this incident when I was in the U.S. Army, going through Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP). It was told as a tangible lesson in how far Rangers will go for each other. Rangers are expected, and do, have each other's backs in any situation, as long as that Ranger is morally in the right. Loyalty to each other goes beyond blood, law, religion, or any other concerns. That was the lesson taught to a bunch of 18-20 year old boys, trying to become men, using this as an example of the dedication expected between brothers.
Thank you for sharing this. Becoming an Army Ranger ~ I can't imagine a more profound experience. This group of Rangers are the example of the power of true loyalty the kind most people will never experience in their lives.... beautifully written.
The cops wouldn't go in when it was happening, they bugged out during the shooting. My neighbor at the time was Adjunct for Ft.Lewis in family housing and I got to hear the story in the morning as he was finally getting home. Bill was a damn hero who had the military turn on him over what he did. He got the whole thing on video from a camera mounted in his attic. So when the crips claimed they were just driving by, Bill got to hand them his video showing the whole thing, including the TPD responding to the call and upon rolling onto the block all back out and leave... later claiming waiting for backup. Sounds about right. I just finished reading a book about a vigilante killing in 1982. The law failed the town repeatedly for decades, and two or three guys decided enough was enough. Then the county sheriff, state police & FBI poured far more resources into finding the killers of the criminal than they ever put into stopping the criminal.
Goes back to how the police have no obligation to help you, the citizen. This happened in 1989, the same happened with the Koreans in 1992 in LA and every riot of 2020 where police stood by and did nothing
Yeah I think that ruling that the police are under no obligation to help you is a bunch of bullcrap if they're not under any obligation to help you then that motto to protect and serve is worthless and so are the police

Left Fort Lewis in March of 89 before this happened but I remember old buddies telling me what went down!! They told us to stay away from there when I first got there in 87!!
Former Ranger Terrence Popp told this story on his TH-cam channel. He did not personally participate because he had duty that night but he knew all these guys and even loaned one a 12 gauge shotgun to bring to the gunfight. He said the crackhouse across the street had so many bullet holes in that it was condemned and torn down.
Imagine being a gang member thinking your just ambushing a normal guy only to be locked in a firefight with a bunch of highly experienced combat veterans
Rangers are the tip of the spear though. The hardest of the hard. Some of the most feared are Army Rangers for they know how to survive all by themselves. Those gang members are lucky to be alive after that, some may not be for all we know
I find it a little concerning that a large Army Ranger "squad" with the benefit of defensive positions and a planned counter-ambush was unable to inflict a single confirmed casualty against untrained gang members w/ pistols and considering how many close calls and injuries they had it doesn't sound like they did any better at all _whatsoever_ and I don't get why the video keeps implying they were badass and the gang members were pussies because given the disparity in training and experience this was an outright _embarrassment_ for an elite group like the Rangers ...and if their intent was to not kill but rather suppress _in a residential neighborhood_ then that's even worse.
@@llYossarian not really a planned counter ambush.. they knew they were coming but they didn’t know when, how many, or where they would be coming from. Can’t really plan anything that way. But they did have defensive positions. And of course there wouldn’t be any confirmed injuries/casualties because they can’t go to any hospitals since ya know… it’s kind of illegal to have shootouts and they’d be put under police investigation. It was also dark, no lights at all apparently. So ya know there’s that. Kind of hard to hit people who are black, dressed in black, and have cover in the middle of the night on an unlit street… point is I’d like to see you last 3 seconds in a similar situation lmao
When I was about 13 years old my Ranger step dad moved us to Tacoma in August of 1989 after his deployment in Panama ended and he was stationed to Fort Lewis. The 1990 New Year party in Lakewood was the first big military party I had been to. They had rented out an entire hotel complex just off base and had hundreds of well armed military guys with their families show up to celebrate the holiday. I remember being told something about a gang retaliation was possible and to stay within certain buildings. Never had any clue as to why until now...I need to have a talk with my stepdad lol.
The fact that the cops weren't stacking dead bodies like cordwood makes me wonder about the competence of these rangers, and exactly how much they'd had to drink that night. I mean we're talking about RANGERS here, supposedly the army's best, and they were dug in and expecting an attack, so those bangers should have been walking dick first into a wood chipper.
The real shame of this story is the beer. If those Rangers hadn't spent the afternoon sinking suds, there'd have been fifteen bodies on the lawn and street, not one wounded man. The gangbangers got off lightly.
Said this to my lefty in-law and he literally shook his head, said no. He also believes there is no valid reason to own a firearm. Not even for hunting, not even if you live 100 miles from humans. The top brass in the US Army are liberal politicians with personal political agendas. I ETS'd from the Army in 2005, and never looked back. Now, I see things like this every two weeks. The Department of Human Services stealing Native American children, and getting $10,000 per child to adopt them out to families with no idea on how to keep the child linked to any aspect of Native culture, or spirituality. Family courts that dissolve marriages, and take children from loving, supportive, capable parents to put them with the parent that kills them, and then forcing the target parent to pay child support for the child that was stolen. Criminal courts that allow the county jails to be revolving doors where criminals go to link up with others, so they can share how they got caught, and become better crooks, so when they are arraigned and released on Tuesday by the piece of trash liberal DA, they are much better at their criminal trade...meanwhile, if a citizen makes a stand, they go to prison for life, because they can afford court fees, and attorney fees with which to fight the system that has been designed to defeat us all.
My favorite story is of an old guy somewhere in Mexico, who gave one drug cartel a blood bath when the tried to claim his land. He was unfortunately killed in the end, but took many cartel members with him. We need more people like that! Such a wonderful thing as drug trade should be completely devoid of any violence or criminal activity.
You mean the guy who had 30 gangsters shooting at his house with 14 other trained military persons and not one person was hit? He’s the definition of an army bitch in my thesaurus
Imagine picking a fight with literal regiment guys. Crazy that any of the bangers got out alive. I was born in Tacoma in 1992 while my dad was at Fort Lewis. I asked him about this story and he remembered it happening. I love the "You don't know you you're messing with" and then "No, YOU don't know who you're messing with." Hahaha
Trust me, as someone who's trained with some Rangers (I am not a Ranger nor have I been to Ranger School, I mean in general combat exercises at Ft Irwin) those bangers only got out because the Rangers were going EASY on them. They don't f%ck around at all, bro.

Even though he was according to my dad a fairly humble and rather kind person, he suffered alot from PTSD, always sleeping with a Beretta under his pilow. John lived in a lower middle class area with some gang activity and the area suffered from constant breakins (this will be important later)
The story goes that at some point, one of Johns best friends/ neighboor came to him for help, he had been robbed in the middle of the night, with his family injured severly and hus watch stolen.
After that, not a single criminal or gang came within 5 blocks of Johns house and he quickly became known as the boogyman of the area

Rangers! They went up against not just one, but several.. oh boy that was a silly move!!! haha
I was expecting there to be a complete pile of gang members when the dust cleared.
He would joke to the tune of, "I joined the Navy so I dont have to be put in the position to get another one."
This was also around the same time a newly graduated recruit decided to wear a Navy SEAL pin and got in deep doodoo...
The good old airfield, I remember running around it 3 times a week! Was in one of the best shapes in my life then…lol

Now in Tacoma the law is pretty much demand the police do nothing.

i suspect what you know about private armies (private military companies) could be contained in a very short paragraph.
@@KASHKUR_7.62 A private military vs. a national military is often a losing fight on the private side. Motivation isn't there like it is with the national military who are motivated from an ideological perspective. This is why when the USA goes to war in a foreign country with questionable at best motivations, they are given hell by what are essentially farmers with AKs. The same played out in Vietnam, Iraq, etc.
Although there are private contractors who are ex-military who are there for the money and the thrill of being a door kicker too. Some of those guys live for it, but most of them just aren't going to fight like a national military with motivation.
bullies tend to fold when pressed

The whole family is a family of bad asses. Truly amazing what they can do.
One gang of thugs vs another. Since the army rangers never moved from the house, it was the gang keeping up the battle for 10 minutes before they ran away & then only because the cops finally showed up. Title is HIGHLY misleading, it seems nobody got smoked whatsoever.

Police: *Doesn’t do anything or even know how to handle the gang situation*
Also Police: “why didn’t you call us?!”
If the rule of law brought you to this, of what use was the thin blue line?
Sounds about right. I just finished reading a book about a vigilante killing in 1982. The law failed the town repeatedly for decades, and two or three guys decided enough was enough. Then the county sheriff, state police & FBI poured far more resources into finding the killers of the criminal than they ever put into stopping the criminal.
We didn’t call you because we didn’t want coffee and donuts yet!
@@kelrik9968 I guess stepping on police enforcement turf is a lot worse than crimes against civilians!
Police are the biggest gang there is.

And we’ve seen it again in Uvalde Texas.

And the teenaged gangbangers still won though, smh.
They're lucky none of the Rangers seemed to have night vision.

If it was one Rambo , they all be dead! I was hoping they all got smoked...

S### like that happened all the time in the Army. I PCS from there in Dec 88. Many many things happened around Ft. Lewis back then.
I lol’d when police told him he should have called them first before the shooting started. Why, so they could have done nothing? Hahaha wtf.
My favorite story is of an old guy somewhere in Mexico, who gave one drug cartel a blood bath when the tried to claim his land. He was unfortunately killed in the end, but took many cartel members with him. We need more people like that!
