The Mind of Eren Jaeger - Attack on Titan Video Essay

  • I remember in high school I took a class called World issues and in this class my teacher told my class a quote that stuck with me until this day. The quote he stated went something along the lines of the most desperate situations create the most desperate people, and the more desperate a person is the more dangerous they can become.
    Now with this lesson ingrained in my mind, I couldn't stop but see this phenomena play out through the life of Eren Jaeger. Eren’s life seemed to be one of continuous turmoil and anguish without any alleviation on the horizon. And because of the cruelties of his world, Eren finds it difficult to break free from his suffering and live a life boundless from any tyranny.
    And this disposition of Eren transformed him to become the Macciavellian personality we see at Season 4. But is that a justification for his cold-blooded actions? Does Eren’s conduct make him a hero or villain? Well what makes this question so interesting is that Isayama presents the answer as unclear. Like I stated in my video Attack on Titan and the Art of Mythology, the definitions of the terms good guy and bad guy relies on specific perspectives and are interchangeable.
    For instance both Willy Tybur and Eren’s intentions are to help their own people; however, they perform undermining means to achieve their goals. So can either of them really be a hero if they have to do bad to achieve good? Well this question is what we’ll attempt to answer in this video through the lens of Eren Jaeger. Does Eren’s intentions make him a good person despite his malicious tendencies or does his conniving tactics sully his character too much for any redemption.

    I think people have a difficult time understanding Eren because we assume that someone can't be both a hero and a villain. He's the idealistic and loyal freedom fighter we knew for the first three seasons, but he's also a genocidal monster. He's both. I think the central theme of AoT is that war turns people into monsters. Two solutions to this problem are proposed: one, to stop the cycle of bloodshed and forgive your enemies. Two, to eradicate your enemies so that retaliation is impossible. Of those two it's safe to say that Isayama believes the former, but he wanted us to completely understand why someone would pick the latter.

      Yes I totally agree! I do believe Iseyama is not encouraging us to stand with Eren wholeheartedly but to understand how someone can go from a "good" to perform atrocities. Thank you for your comment!

    I always did think about this. Being a survivor means having no luxury for morals. This was another concept within Arcane that many ppl struggled and why so many considered Silco a villian. But the same could be said for Levi. His strength from surviving came at the cost of others.
    Having the right to live when clashing with others sometimes meant having the stronger will to overcome the others. And when it takes sacrifice, it has a greater meaning. For Eren, it was at a great expense.
    Awesome analysis vid and I loved the use of quotes to expand on his mental state. They were very useful

      @ssRAY-  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes many people do not have the luxury to be moral. I like how you brought up Silco from Arcane because that is another character that shows because of his circumstances he had to do what he thought was needed to survive. And thank you for the compliment! It means alot!

    Completely agree. I’d say that’s true of most characters in the series of AOT in fact. Very rarely did Isayama lead us to infer that someone was wholly evil, it was pieces of black and white that made up peoples character.
    I do say I find it interesting that Eren is presented as being evil/ fundamentally flawed or corrupt for his killing of Mikasas’ kidnappers, whereas Mikasa conversely escapes judgement in that matter. I should specify that I mean people who discuss or analyze Eren Yaeger seem to think that he was in the wrong for that, not necessarily Isayama or anyone in the story, except his dad maybe.
