      Okay I will say, Reiner is a villain, 100%, you don't just cause the fall of Shiganshina and not be a shitty person. But Eren wiped out *80% of mankind.* They are in two different leagues of villainy. Eren is, canonically, a bigger mass murderer than Adolf Hitler by exponential factors.

    Erens entire story leading up the end of season 3 painted a false picture of a hero’s journey, when in reality he was always gonna be the villain of this story whether it’s what he wanted or not. All for the sake of his friends and people.

      Eren didn't go out as the villain of this story though, and that was the original bittersweet ending the manga delivered. Considering all this talk about Isayama changing the ending going as far back as 2013 when the anime started, who knows how the anime will now end?

I only mentioned it here since the OP talked about Eren's journey, and given Isayama's statements, he might have a different ending for the anime. Just saying...

      Actually it's not for his friends or people at all. It's *sort of* for his friends. Barely for his people. Mostly for himself. The final chapter shows it was always him wrestling between his selfish and selfless desires. Just like Reiner -- Did Reiner truly want to save the world, or did he just want everyone's approval? Did Eren truly want to destroy the world, or did he just want to be free?

    To think that Willy's Call To Arms cemented Eren's lack of choice. The moment Willy riled up the Marlay People to a full on war with Paradise, he made Eren's decision for him. Had he instead chosen to attempt to sway them from war, and instead simply leave the Island alone, Eren wouldn't have been forced to set off the bomb.
    Of course, we know full well it was going to go down that way because Eren knew it was the only option available, but Willy's speech was like cutting the Red Wire and setting off a bomb with an unknown timer.

      yep, with the way it is both sides can't exist in the world as it was, for Marley they believe Ymir and her descendants are pure evil who if left alone will just conquer the world a second time and they won't be changed because that has been the truth to them for centuries, and the people on the island cannot forgive them for the breaking of the outermost wall and other chaos caused by them, the hate of both sides is in their eyes justified and they won't be convinced of anything else.

    I don’t think the whole scene was to tell the audiences that they were the same because they both had no choice. Just like Reiner said, it’s not the environment that forced them to commit such evil acts. They did what they did because they wanted to, they were born that way: stubborn idiots who keep moving forward until the get what they desired. To Reiner, it’s to become the hero, to Eren, it’s to archive his childish dream of being freed. Ironically, in the end, Reiner became the hero by giving up on his desire, while Eren, the one who kept forward, wanted to be stopped by his friends

    • @CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi
      @CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Pretty much, but its still clear who went out as the hero in the end of the manga, based on who everyone was crying for in the end there, the same guy who died to give peace a chance. But lets see what the anime delivers on the other hand, since Isayama confirmed changing the ending from the bittersweet one where he wanted to attack the fans (which he delivered) to one that is happy and more satisfying for fans. Considering the anime removed the foreshadowing that guaranteed this ending, and that Eren is being portrayed as heroic in all the moments where he was called "the villain" and Reiner is being portrayed as a "villain" in most of his moments, who knows what the anime will deliver now?

Falco got the full picture of the whole thing because he heard Eren say their side of the story. Without that he would have been as blind as Gabi, well not really but you get what I mean. Man this show. I love how Eren sits and waits, transforming right on the declaration of war. Its not unusual for people who have no experience of the frontline of war to be eager for it. Especially with a reason as justified as "he will kill us all if we don't stop him." So the moment war is announced, he brings the war to them. Instant pandemonium. I won't be so callous as to call it Karma or Justice by any means, as so many innocents were killed in that moment. And I definitely don't want to get into the "are enablers of violent people guilty too" because this show/manga is so good at flip flopping on that. There is no static answer to that morality. Frankly, how much I enjoy dissecting this show has me worried for my own moral compass.

      @@sayoor2765 lots of countries have found peace after centuries of conflicts. The catalyst for that peace is usually a common enemy. What Eren did, or more accurately, what his friends did by stopping him, is just cementing Paradis as the common enemy. Realistically Paradis would've been destroyed not even 10 years after what happens in the manga.
      Either there should've been a complete Rumbling or what Armin thought Eren would do initially, a partial Rumbling, to establish them as a strong threat that shouldn't be disturbed, and then using Historia to preserve the Founding Titan powers for the future.
      And that's only if we really want Paradis to survive, it wouldn't stop conflicts from happening, Paradis was in the middle of a civil war already. Human conflicts will never stop, that was the underlying message Isayama was trying to illustrate. I think he botched it with the inclusion of the whole... The whole question of whether you consider Eren a villain is based 100% on your moral system. The actions themselves aren't intrinsically evil. If you are a utilitarian, ends-justify-the-means type of person, you might find Eren's actions totally permissible. I more or less agree that it makes sense to view Eren as a villain, as that's the narrative role he serves. At the same time, there's no need to over-simplify the moral greyness of the show.
    Good video, though.

      Unlike Eren, we don't know what every potential world looked like. It's possible that the world he chose had less bloodshed over many generations than others, because the mass sacrifice caused by the rumbling may have ushered an era of peace.
      In my opinion, Attack on titan does a really good job avoiding black and white 'good' Vs 'bad' and it's a disservice to the show's excellent writing to try to box any one character into 'hero' or 'villain.'

And to say Zeke’s plan is without a doubt better disregards the people of paradis and how they would adamantly oppose Zeke’s plan. It also raises another philosophical question, is the suffering of the few for the benefit of the many justifiable? To someone like Eren who’s loved one’s are in the sacrificial few the answer is no which is why he chooses to sacrifice a larger number of the many to ensure the survival of both the few and many.

    Excellent job, dude! It's awesome to see someone else appreciate how fantastic of a character and villain Eren Jaeger is!
    The only thing is I interpreted the talk slightly differently. I thought that although Eren was saying that he and Reiner didn't have a choice, that he actually meant the opposite of that. I took that to be an accusation. Like the sarcastic accusation of "You were just following orders, right?". That Reiner did actually have the choice to not follow through with the plan. Just like Eren at the moment could choose some other tactic that didn't involve as much bloodshed.
    I think this is his true intent, considering his pointed question; "Why did my mother have to die, Reiner?"
    To Eren, this was personal. Sure, he sympathizes with Reiner and the Marleyans. And he's also doing this because of pragmatic reasons. Eren feels they have to bring the fight to Marley, or they'll end up being crushed in a war of attrition.
    But the real motivator for all of it, and especially the talk with Reiner is his absolute hatred for Marley and it's citizens. Eren despised Reiner. He was the kind of angry that you get to where you have to bottle up all your emotions and set them aside just to function. That's why he isn't showing emotion, because he can't let the wall he built up slip, or he'd just lose his sanity and control. But you can see it in his actions. Recounting the day when the wall broke. Explaining to Reiner why he's here. Showing understanding and empathy towards Reiner, and saying that the two of them were the same. This was Eren acknowledging their similarities, but it was also, to me, an angry statement.
    "What you did to me, I'm about to do to you. This is your fault. All of it."
    Anyways, that's what I took from his talk with Reiner. I'm certainly not an expert, I could have misinterpreted what the scene was about. But I feel like AoT has many different ways that you can interpret the story and characters that fit the overall narrative shown. To me, that's representative of a good story.
    Keep up the good work!

    Its weird to see somebody label Eren as a villain in a show that sends another message. AoT's last season in particular shows us that there is no villains, only the villainous circumstance, such is life. Because life is just that cruel.
    What Eren originally did was a man's natural response to learning that the entire world is pitted against you and those who you'd like to protect. Laying down and simply dying because your giving up would lead to less bloodshed denotes a person who really does not deserve to live. The people of the island are convicts of a sentence long since served forcefully turned into aggressors by their jurors. The show teaches that there is no good guys or bad guys in war, war is simply just a massive tragedy bound to occur, and I'd argue its not morally justified in the first place to enslave these people for the crimes of their ancestors, actions they took no part in.
    People should be valued not on just their existence, but their willingness to fight for what they believe in as well.

      While I do Agree with you, I think it doesnt help to sweep it under the "There is no Villains" Rug. Because if that were the case then there would be no such thing as villains in general. AOT does a great job at portraying the suffering of Both Sides but fans seem to only see one side as the actual Bad guys. Yes the People of Paradis are Innocent and So are the Imprisoned Eldians of Marley. But Erens Plan of Complete Genocide of everyone outside the walls (Even if it only ended up as 80%) cannot be justified anymore. At that point he Killed Innocent people and was even willing to kill his friends if they decided to stop him.
      A lot of People also Seemed to Either miss the Explination or still dont under Stand but Being a Villain doesnt mean Eren is plotting and evil laugh while doing Genocide. His Circumstances were fucked and I do sympathize with him but...Genocide is a bad thing regardless of which side he is on.

      @@KamonXV Is Genocide a bad thing when it's the only way for you and yours to survive tho? The side plot with the other countries desiring Paradis' resources proved that even if they went with the partial Rumbling, and established themselves as a force that shouldn't be reckoned with, that would just prolong the conflict. The world was ages ahead of them military inventions-wise.
      What Eren did was awful, and idealistic. What Zeke wanted to do would've also doomed Paradis, but he's proven that he more or less doesn't give a shit about eldians who aren't from Marley.
      Ideal case scenario would be Isayama writing Eren realistically, destroying all major military bases, with a lot of innocent cities as casualties on the way, and not "80% of the world" because 1) that's bs and 2) the titans literally just walked in a straight line through the ocean between the island and Marley and somehow half of Marley seems to have survived, despite most of the world being dead, what???
      The whole Rumbling thing felt very rushed ngl. The art was amazing as always, but still. Isayama is better at writing the realistic struggles of the regular men in war, rather than realistic bigger conflicts with huge consequences.

    I have always thought it disengenious to call Eren a villain. Recall that the entire world declared war on Paradis Island, that they did that even before Eren ever attacked despite the fact that when Tybur told the truth and revealed Marley to have spread propaganda to them for decades. And Eren has known this would happen for years.
    If there was a peaceful solution out of the situation then I might be able to call Eren a villain. But when the rest of humanity wants to wipe you and your loved ones out of existance and you have exhausted all avenues to a peaceful solution, what the heck do you owe the rest of humanity?! Yeah they are humans too and all that, but they have willingly chosen to disregard the eldians humanity to wipe them out or enslave them so fuck e'm.
    This is where I have a bit of a bone to pick with Isayama, because Eren's fall to villainy would have had a bit more punch to it if there were options for a peaceful solution, like maybe if he had crafted a situation with a bit of nuance where maybe not the entire world declared war on them because they saw through Marleys and Tyburs shit. Eren's fall would actually have some bite to it then.

    • @KamonXV
      @KamonXV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You see normally I would agree with you. How ever I feel NOT calling him one is also disingenuous because his actions are still at the end of the day Evil. Most villains in media are in the same situation where they did what was right to them.
      Biggest example I can think of is Pain/Nagato from Naruto. He is from the hidden rain village, a nation constantly struck with war,death and poverty. Even with peaceful solutions that didn't stop so he choose to unite the world through Empathy of Pain.
      And even by definition Eren is a villain. His Evil actions (no matter which way you slice it. What he did was evil) the plot is moved forward. Everyone else has to REACT to what eren is doing. Eren is no longer the Hero of the story once he planned to commit Genocide

    • @joaoassumpcao3347
      @joaoassumpcao3347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But there was a peaceful solution. The show establishes that Eren's reaction to the declaration of war is exactly what will make the declaration successful. This happens in real life all the time: one side pushes the other hoping they will react, and the moment they do, then their allies come to their defense. It's an excuse to act, basically. A solid reason. That reason was needed mainly because Marley already had unstable relations with other countries, Willy being the rope that tied them together. If Eren didn't commit essentially a terrorist attack against the entire world's representatives, Marley would probably be alone in a war. Even if all of them got in the war with Marley, probably no one would move much of a finger to help (which is, again, something that frequently happens in real life). And remember, the world didn't declare war on Paradis, Marley did. Tybur wasn't speaking for all the countries at the same time. There was no formed alliance. There was no signed partnership. The only one declaring war before Eren attacked was Marley.

    While I do agree that Eren became a villain after kissing Historias hand, and is debatable if it was by his own volition or because after kissing Historias hand, he saw the past, present and future and all alternatives besides war or starting the Rumble. The social status would not change and if it did.
    Eren went from the Protagonist, to Villan, to a Tragic Villan by necessity to change the world.
    Although I feel that the final parts were a bit hurried, it ended tragicly but ended well.
    *Spoilers*
    The cycle of opression and violence would continue or even worsen:
    Misaka would be force to become Royalty and bear the succession of her own country (Hizuru, country that was waiting for any sort of Elbian weakness to attack them);
    Marley who wanted complete world domination and obliteration of Elbia and it's people.
    Marleyin rebels wanted to make a religion out of the rumble worshiping Eren like a god. (Yikes)
    Elbia who if they won the war would perpetuate the cycle of violence towards the Marley for all the years of torture and violence of their people.
    In the end the Titan's powers and the Coordinate was the reason for the endless war.
    This is why he, declares war on Marley, severes ties with his friends, ignores everything besides his plan, removes the Elbian bloodline curse (i.e. Ymir's curse saving Ymir's soul from being bound), but most of all....He leaves all his friends and foes with the ability to transform and stop him... Although with the past being determined by the future, and with no way for it not to be self-determined, I suppose the real villain is the author.

    • @CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi
      @CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just so you know, people who understood Japanese confirmed that Eren WASN'T responsible for that revelation, it was Ymir.
      But speaking of the author, we got the original bittersweet ending where he wanted to hurt the fans, so he can be considered a villain for that I guess lol but ever since the anime started, he wanted to create a happy and more satisfying ending for the fans, and he even took away the foreshadowing that solidifed the ending we got in the anime and considering he is a head writer for the anime, that can't be a mistake.

    • @scotcheggable
      @scotcheggable 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi assuming we're talking about him making his mother kill his other mum instead of bertold, then he says that he did it? Hard to imagine they'd get that wrong in translation.
      Although if that is the case, then that's kinda worse, because Ymir has all the powers of all the titans and always has, so from the very start she could see the future and specifically chose for every single atrocity to happen and chose to do so until an arbitrary event which she already knew would happen actually happened, despite it not being any revelation to her because she already knew it would occur.
      Honestly the time stuff just takes a golf club to this series.

    • @CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi
      @CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scotcheggable Yes, we're talking about that, and no, Eren didn't actually say he did that. That was a fan translation, which was changed completely by the official release date.
      But all Ymir wanted was not for Bert to die, so he just had Dina ignore him, and go to the countless other people that was in the city. It doesn't make it worse like you're saying it does.
      But I do agree that the time stuff with this series can be confusing and hopefully the anime clears it up. Considering this time stuff was kinda already in place before Isayama was inspired by GOT, maybe there will be changes to how its implemented since time travel was a big debate for that series also.

    • @scotcheggable
      @scotcheggable 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CHRISCAMPO-wq8bi my point still stands, unless you're saying she holds a purely sentimental attachment for someone she's never met that trumps any and all consideration for others, including others in bertolds position wherein she did not interfere (titan users about to be eaten.)
      That makes even less sense than eren doing it himself. I could at the very least accept that it was something eren would do, but Ymir doing it makes no sense whatsoever because she has never intervened in such a way before or since and didn't even show the willingness or intent to of her own free will.

  • @Ashlevon
    @Ashlevon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Eren is no villain, he's just an avatar of retribution.
    There is plenty of pain dished out and evil enacted in Attack on Titan, but generally, everyone is in a morally grey area, as they should be. Most people, even in real life, do what they must to protect themselves or the ones they care for, or just to survive. But when it came to the titan people, nobody was in the right.
    The original Eldians enslaved the titans, and then the world, but not too different from what empires in our world were like. When the new Eldian empire/titan Eldians repented for all the destruction they caused, the Marleyans and the rest of the world sought to punish them further, despite said penitence, which was in fact unjust. Not just that, but in their fear of the Eldians, the Marleyans treated them like the Nazis treated the Jewish, and then also sought to destroy their isolationist and ignorant nation on top of that. Eren's actions towards the rest of the world mirrored Marley's actions towards Eldians.
    However, all of this stemmed from one simple problem that Jean mentioned after the Rumbling started: *nobody thought of diplomacy, to simply just... talk.* And because nobody talked to anyone else, they just fought like animals until one of the sides moved to logical conclusion of killing off the other side entirely. Eren is just the byproduct of the unfair and aggressive and beligerent world he lives in. He hates that world, and he hates himself for doing what he chose to do, but he does it anyways, for the sake of everyone, so that there can be some peace, despite the human cost.
