In my last video titled The Mind of Eren Jaeger, we analyzed Eren’s character and tried to give him the label of hero or villain. In summary, I concluded that it was difficult to attach one of these labels to Eren as his life story was too complex to give him a label so cut and dry. But in this video I wanted to add to my prior analysis of Eren and discuss his more villainous tendencies. It is very apparent that Eren Jaeger’s actions in Season 4 were questionable. But what I wanted to tackle in this video is to analyze Eren’s philosophies as to why he committed those actions.
Before we delve into Eren’s moral philosophy, I believe it is important to understand the legacy he inherited from his predecessors. See without Eren knowing, he has been tied to a predicament where he is a key player. And the mantle that gives him such prowess is the mantle of the Attack Titan.
See, the mantle of the Attack Titan is much more different than an ordinary mantle being passed down. The carriers of this mantle all share common behaviors, goals, and most importantly can share their experiences through delving into each other's memories even after a carrier has died or before they are born. Coincidentally, all who inherit the Attack Titan are rebellious in nature, have an affinity for strength, stoic and have experienced tragedies that catalyzed their radicalization. These characteristics are also sought after when a user is looking for a successor.
For instance, the first user of the Attack Titan that we know of in the anime is Eren Kruger and his life story follows the aforementioned traits exactly. Kruger showcases his rebelliousness as he reestablishes the Eldian Restorationist Movement. Also he becomes a double spy in the Marleyan Ranks who aids the Restorationists from the moniker “ the Owl”. On his mission Kruger is stoic and performs atrocities against his own Eldian kind, but does so for his eventual end goal of freeing them.
Lastly, like his predecessors Kruger underwent a traumatizing event that led him down this path which was his witnessing of Marleyan officers burning his family alive. As a result of this trauma, Kruger vowed to exact his revenge on Marley.
Following, Kruger’s successor Grisha Jaeger has a story that is parallel to him. Just like Kruger, Grisha underwent a similar trauma when he discovered that his sister Faye was tragically mauled by dogs by the Marleyan officers. As a result, Grisha wished for freedom for his fellow Eldians and joined the Eldian Restortianist. Also, like Kruger, Grisha commits unethical actions for his mission such as being negligent to his firstborn son Zeke Jaeger and burdening him with unattainable expectations. This negligence of Grisha would then lead to the downfall of the Restorationists and because of his carelessness, many of his companions that followed him were turned into mindless Titans. But although Grisha failed, he was saved by Eren Kruger. And as a result of Grisha having similar characteristics to him, Kruger passes on his titan powers onto Grisha to continue their mission to free Eldia.
Now this brings us to Eren Jaeger who has all the characteristics of his predecessors. From a young age Eren is rebellious, desires freedom, and is shown to be emotionless at the sight of cruelty. And just like his predecessors he was traumatized by an tragic event that led to his radicalization which was his mother being eaten by a Titan.
Now at the beginning of the series Eren does not have these cold characteristics and overall he is still naive. It is not until he comes to face with consequential challenges and betrayals is when he adopts all the characteristics wholeheartedly. It is only after surviving all those challenges and paradigm shifts is when Eren begins to adopt a more stoic composure akin to his predecessor Eren Kruger. This influence on Eren Jaeger is so potent that he even goes as far as to adopt the alias Kruger when he disguises himself in Marley.
Now the reason as to why I bring this up is because this transformation of Eren showcases that the mantle of Attack Titan is not only a mantle that inherits powers but a mantle that inherits a philosophy. A philosophy to desire freedom and to keep moving forward no matter what. And the reason as to why I am emphasizing the characteristics of this fictional philosophy of the Attack Titan is because it bears numerous similarities to the real-life philosophy of Machiavellianism.

Here's the thing: The idea that ‘good’ and ‘evil’ don’t exist in Attack on TItan is backward. While you can say Isayama makes it a point to not label any human beings as irrefutably ‘good’ or ‘evil’ (we are grey), he consistently and categorically makes the distinction between ‘good’ and ‘evil’ ACTIONS. All he does is show that there is human reasoning and survivalism behind their actions. Which is the truth behind many evil acts.

What Isayama conveys so well is that "good actions" is something we all inherently understand. Everyone wants to do good things. But the more power you have, the more you realize that it's impossible to be generally good. Armin, Mikasa, Hange, Levi are characters that have a clear goal of doing good. Meanwhile Eren, Reiner and Zeke have too much power, and thus can't just lay back and be good guys.

Floch saw this necessary evil in Eren just as he saw it in Erwin Smith. Erwin Smith had the will to send all those soldiers to their death without hesitation even if it meant gaining the upper hand just for a moment for Levi to kill the Beast Titan. Even Armin understands this deep down when he says that those who cannot sacrifice something dear (morality?) will never be able to win over their enemies. Great video, man.

I think there are 3 factors that makes a man's character and personality
    Nature(genetics which he owns)
    Nurture (the upbringing)
Critical events (such that they have the power to shape someone's perception)
Eren was pushed by all these 3 factors to become what he is
In my opinion if his aim was free of hatred or feeling of revenge and just for paradise saftey and he had no other option then he is completely justified even if it means killing billions because he is free to prioritize the lifes when eventually some has to die.
If only everyone was like eren then there wouldn't have been any war

It's more like, if everyone was like Eren, there would be even more war. He is not justified to commit genocide, killing all people to eliminate wars is basically the same as killing poor people to eliminate poverty. I think the word should be understandable, not justifiable, it's also easier for us to justify him since we saw most of the series from his perspective, so we root for him, but that's the thing, that's how the Jaegerists see him, and they are so radicalized that became the very same xenophobic pieces of shit as the ones that got them inside the walls in the first place. There's no clear answer to if it's right or wrong, but what is clear is that we as humans always have conflict, but what makes us better is how we deal with them, and everyone in the series deals with it the worst way possible... except for maybe Armin

@@xDMikeyms I don't think there would be war, they would just leave each other in peace. Besides that. They are in war, and there are better and worse ways to deal with them, but what would you do in such a situation. Also, "if we kill them they win" is not how war works, in the end, those who are killed lose the most, but there are no winners in war. But we should still fight for freedom, truth, etc. The path to freedom is drenched in blood after all.

    • @xDMikeyms
      @xDMikeyms ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@casimirtrasta5834 That's an extreme way to see it. Firstly, Eren does everything for personal reasons, he does not care about anyone that's not his friends, he did everything for them, so no, if everyone was like him, they would all do unspeakable things in order to protect them, leading to even more war, he was never willing to do something different, I won't give manga spoilers, but he clearly shows that he doesn't feel what he's doing is right, but still does it. And sorry, but you're completely wrong on how war works, that exact mentality is what lead to soldiers in Vietnam to kill and kill and kill troops and civilians, Vientam lost thousands upon thousands of people more that the U.S, and still won the war, casualties are never how wars are won, cause they're not fought for people but for political interests, also freedom is a vague term, and if taken to the extreme we know how it can lead to senseless violence, but that's kinda the point AOT is trying to make.

I'll be brutal - there *is* a character who is very similar to Eren Jaeger in American comics: Magneto, the primary villain of the X-men. Both experienced severe oppression and traumatic events, but used that as an excuse to try to wipe out the human race. The only difference is X-men's story doesn't revolve around Magneto - it's more of a general point of view - so you can see that Magneto is just as much a racist asshole as the people who are oppressing him. The only reason the heroes might work with him temporarily is when the balance of power is severely stacked against them and they're desperate. Even then there's usually a falling out the very second the power shifts.
Eren is just as bad - it's just that in Season 1-3 the actual heroes were super-desperate and Eren didn't have any agency half the time anyway.

I'm of the opinion that the 9 titans each reflect an aspect of Ymir that we're deluded down to only a single dominant characteristic. The size of the collosal, the gender of the female, the hardening of the Warhammer ect. If that's the case, then the attack titan is her repressed desire for freedom manifesting itself. So really the Titans are a snake eating its own tail, they create and destroy themselves inherently by the nature of existing at all.

@@ssRAY- thank you! I actually have another theory in that vein if you like that one. Let's talk about the Rose, Maria, and Sina titans.
The lore states specifically that the three of them ate Ymir, and each had 3 children themselves and we're eaten by them, therefore creating the 9. Since the founders power was effectively divided into 3 and then each of those were divided again into 3, two questions come to mind. 1. Which 3 of the 9 abilities did each Rose, Maria, and Sina possess? And 2. Why did they discontinue the practice of eating the mother to create even more abilities?
I'll start with question 2 since it's more straightforward. If each of the nine was eaten by three children, just one more generation would have resulted in 27 shifters. Why not go that far for power considering how corrupt the eldians are viewed? Well the obvious answer is that the founder would become too diluted and each of the 27 shifters would be little more than a conscious version of mindless titans with maybe a stray hardening or screaming ability. At that point the Titans would be far less powerful and therefore less useful overall.
For question number 1, we can actually be fairly certain of which 3 titans each of the sisters held through context as the breadcrumbs are all there.
I forget which was the eldest sister, I want to say Maria, feel free to correct me if that's wrong. Either way, it's fairly reasonable to assume the eldest would have inherited the three titans closest to the founder. Royalty just works like that. Therefore Maria would likely have the founder, the attack, and female Titan abilities since they all involve commanding titans or affecting memories somehow. I would call this the Royal Titan.
The middle sister Rose, would likely have the bestial titans. As in the beast, the colassal, and the cart. They all share animalistic traits that would make sense if they had a common ancestral titan, with the exception of the colossal that would simply represent the size of an imposing beast, and the steam even represents the heat of fear coming over it's victims. I call this the Savage Titan.
The youngest sister Sina would therefore likely possess the Warhammer, the armored, and the jaws, as they all possess inherent hardening abilities. I call this the Knight Titan.
There's an argument to be made that jaws fits better as a part of the Savage, and the female could be part of the Knight Titan for general combat versatility. And the colossal could fit anywhere. That being said at the very least the cart and the beast came from the same place, as did the attack and founder, as did the Warhammer and armored. You can shuffle them around in many ways that make sense as long as those 6 are observed since it's so obvious. That being said my point still stands, and which titan power was descended from which of the three princesses is a discussion worthy of its own video.

Eren would never go down this path unless he touched historia. is clear that Founding Eren send him a message back in that second. remember, anything that happens in the paths, could be years as shown with zeke and eren at the end of the manga. we do not know how many years Eren went through in that moment but its clear that yes Eren experiences help shape him, is also clear that when Eren was at his lowest, was also when he got in contact with another royal blood.

Eren's first priority was his friends, he even says "I care about you guys more than anyone else". The safety of the Island could have been guaranteed until they developed technologically had they made Historia a titan shifter, but Eren didn't want to "sacrifice Historia and her children" so he chose a full rumbling as it would be one the only means of getting what he wants. (Most of his friends surviving and living long lives, and saving the island without castrating the people of the island.) Eren had those two priorities, and the only way he could see to make these happen was to commit borderline omnicide. Eren is only evil because he put his friends and his tiny nation of a few million before the rest of mankind. A very very tribalistic outlook, which is seen as evil in the modern day because of globalism and such (which was kinda a thing in the AOT verse as well). If a similar story came out a few hundred years ago Eren wouldn't be evil, he would be seen as normal, and maybe in a few hundred more years he will be seen as an even more empathetic and sympathetic character than he is today.

Is for reasons like this I often point out how similar the walking dead is to attack on titan. And although the journey of eren jaeger is similar to rick grimes, with eren is a special case, because I always found odd the way he changed his mind about everything, and much like you said in your video, it may be because he realize no matter how hard they try Theres always gonna be someone after them. But I still fine interesting how the rest of characters and their motives are portrayed in ways that are bastly different from erens. What im saying is that what youre saying is right, but applied to the wrong eren, and you see, i find kinda hard to believe eren planned all of this by himself, and I believe he was being mind controled or at the very least manipulated, why? I dont think having 2 erens is a coincidence and the pact of no war is a bit weird that affects their users in such an specific way and also given the fact that the ackermans are also a family that cant be controled by the founding titan, these are all elements that kept me from believe that all of this was eren jaeger doing. But thats Just a theory of me trying to understand eren change of heart. And I do believe rick grimes is a better example of a hero pushed to become a Villain

Eren's character is basically that of a child that throws a tantrum when things aren't simple enough aka someone with no control over self. The author himself compares him to a serial killer character who's just born abnormal. Hence the character has no free will/ understanding and accountability over his actions and desires since being born is simply out of one's own control.

Yes, he's a bad person. Even if everything he did were because he genuinely wanted to save Paradis (which I don't believe, we have many hints that he also did it out of selfishness and revenge, and there are indefensible things like hurting Armin and Mikasa), that is still wrong because there were other ways to defend Paradis that didn't involve a super genocide.

@@kamronspencer4910 1. The 50 year plan isn't a solution it's just stalling the world's attack on Paradise while they force they the future generation to think of a plan
      2. It continues the cycle of children eating they're parents and doesn't even guarantee a solution to save Paradise
      3. The world's technology is almost at the point of being completely able to wipe out titans (as shown in season 4 part 1) another 50 years and they probably won't need titans...
      4. Using a sample size rumbling would just give the world even more motivation to Destroy Paradise since now they know how terrifying it is
      5. You just answered you're own question, in the end it doesn't solve anything....it just delayed the problem...and Eren basically did do the 50 year plan...except he gave them even more time and guess how that turned out.....they still came back and wiped out Paradise

villainous? um no. the world was happy sending eldians transformed into titans and keeping them locked in a cage, when the king told them to leave them alone. instead of leaving them alone, they did the opposite and went there, broke the walls, created erin. if they didn't send titans they would have never got the attack titan, or the founding titan, and none of this would have happened.
yet they were perfectly happy while eldians get eaten and they live care free. all leading up to wiping out the eldians. they'd stand no chance as they've been kept locked in by the titans. BUT NOW........... that erin can do it to them, and END this, once and for all, and fulfill his promise to destroy all the titans, he shouldn't? because, some innocent people will get killed? LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD XD XD
that's is the fucking dumbest shit I've ever heard. so reiner and annie are cool now cuz they wanted to kill a smaller portion of the population, that they conveniently don't belong to?
nope. fuck that. squish them all. don't see anyone saying shit about the kids armin killed when he nuked marley. what about the kids erins dad killed to get the founding titan? erin's mom? armin's grandfather? hannes? erin's dad? for fuck's sake he had to eat his dad to get the power, and now he has it and FINALLY KNOWS HOW IT WORKS AND HAS LESS THAN 3 YEARS TO LIVE, he shouldn't use it? nope sorry, there has been tons of innocent blood spilled till this point, and the marlians are FAR from innocent. fuck them. they've earned this. and I hope they get it. real good.
cuz if this doesn't end.............then it doesn't end. erin can never rest knowing the titans and this conflict continues for his friends to bear. that scene where they all fight about who's gonna take his powers really illustrates how he feels. he'll be the monster, like armin said about commander erwin, so he can beat the monster. he's dead no matter what, he doesn't care what anyone thinks about him. he just wants to see it done, and he will pay any cost to achieve that.

    • @EF-wy3di
      @EF-wy3di ปีที่แล้ว

The world was not happy doing anything. It was the leaders of Marley which is a Fascist state, aka dictatorship. The citizens may have been racist but they were not aware of the actions be done and most of them were brainwashed by fear. The rumbling has the ability to destroy the world and could be done at anytime and the Marley knew it. Imagine every day you don't know if it is the day that the small island that once brutally dominated the world would decide to nuke the world. They do not know of that kings vow or what that king was doing over there. All they know is that the violent oppressors that they overthrew had the ability to kill them all at any moment.
Marley is only the way it is because that was the only way they could be to regain their freedom.
Parids is literally like if North Korea had more powerful nukes than America. The eldians ruled the world through terror and retreated with a very real threat of destroying the world. No reasonable nation would leave them alone.
The point of the story is that no one is in the right because they are all trapped in a cycle of violence that was started thousands of years before they are born. They are all acting rationally given the situation and that does nothing but cause more death and continue the cycle.
To not be able to recognize that Erin is a villain is to miss the point of the show entirely.
