Zuko saw the ugliest part of Katara. The part that Aang never dealt with the way Zuko had to. He saw the worst of Katara- resentment, disappointment, tears, hatred, hurt. He accepted Katara for that, while Aang never had to. Katara changed for Aang to be a better wife/person, and as someone pointed out, Kataang ruined her arc. She fought Pakku for equality, to bring feminine power to light. What they reduced Katara to was the very thing she was resisting. Aang was, in a way, her worst option. He stunted her growth and arc, while also ruining their family life. He put a lot of pressure on Tenzin as Tenzin was the only airbender and neglected his other two children to the point of cracking their familial bonds with bitterness. Aang very obviously never really had to parent in the way Katara did. In the end, he was unfulfilling in both his marital duties and in parenting. In addtion, Katara made excuses for him. Which is a sign of an abusive relationship. I would know. I've been in one. Zuko knows all of Katara, he is her equal. They are different in all of the ways they should, but also similar in the ways they matter. They are both highly emotional people. One of them lashes out first, and is seen as hot-headed and fiery. The other internalises it and is seen as calm. Zuko knows how Katara feels, and he can understand her in a way Aang can never. Zuko and Katara's parallels make them so intriguing and compatible. They come from roles with a lot of pressure to grow up and mature fast. They're both scolded for their identities. Zuko, the banished prince and Katara- a female waterbender expected to become a housewife and healer. Zuko is sentimental, feeling things in high intensity. However, in the role he plays, he cannot be either. Katara is passionate and powerful, but she is denied that. Together, they are whole. They are yin and yang- yin and yang are not opposites. They are balance. They are not fully different- they are the same thing, just inverted. Aang and Katara are not either of those things. Katara's maturity is on par with that of an adult, whereas Aang is mentally still a child. That is evident. It is not physical age that separates them, it is their level of maturity that does. The gap is far too large, which causes Katara to mother him, and Aang to become codependent on that smothering. Aang never has to mature because Katara is the bigger person in the relationship. In addition to being the stay-at-home spouse, parent, therapist when needed, Katara has no real support. In parenting, Zuko knows what it feels like to be ignored. I remember someone saying: "Aang had many children because he never had any siblings. Zuko had one child because he knew what it felt like to have a sibling." Which shows parallels in their upbringing. Aang never had anyone his age, or family. Therefore, he wanted that wholeness to his family. Zuko knew what it felt like to be outshined and ignored, so he wanted his child to feel loved. If Zuko did have multiple children, he'd know what to do because he was in his children's situation at one point. Izumi's mother is primarily unknown, so it's safe to assume that Zuko was the more present parent, as was Katara. Together, they could've supported each other because even as teens, Zuko played the paternal role in the group in S3, and Katara was the mother for the duration of the timeline. They are equal, always have been. Not clashing heads, but working in harmony. Yin and Yang. Tui and La. Ran and Shaw. Their story is one-of-a-kind. In the way there has truly never been so much interwoven symmetry between the two. ATLA is heavily influenced by Chinese beliefs and many other East Asian cultures, and something as a Chinese woman I can safely say: Balance is at the very core of many of our beliefs. Food, even. Their love in the lore as well. Tui and La, Ran and Shaw, Oma and Shu- they were not completely different. They were the same coin, just different sides. Zuko and Katara undubitably are coded into the show- even unintentionally. They are Avatar's idea of a perfect relationship by lore. Their arcs match. Zuko's is seeking honour, power, love. Confidence. He thinks his "honour" will be "earned back." His journey is embracing who he really is and finding that "honour" won't fix everything. After healing and finding himself, he tackles on his nation- attempting to restore the Fire Nation to its previous glory and name. Katara is learning the ropes of the world- learning that the world isn't fair and that she can't help anyone- as well as healing her inner child. She breaks through the standards of what is possible for a woman while maintaining femininity. She teaches the world the glory of a woman- she teaches the world of her power. However, her arc is stunted by her marriage and children. There was so much she could've done, so much that arc could've been, yet she was denied that. In addition to healing her inner child- Zuko indirectly helped Katara heal her realtionship with the fire nation. That resentment at the end of the show began to fade because she began to see the many shades of grey in the world. She began to heal, and there was so much to explore and see. Had she chose Zuko, she would've showed the world her divine feminity, and that even a motherly figure like her could be fierce and powerful as fire lady. She could be the second leader of the nation by Zuko's side, letting go of the past and helping the place she once despised- grow. Dealing with her internalised feelings, letting go, coming to terms with these intense feelings that she never was able to fully express- this would be Katara's gateway to her prime. She would also heal the world. The Fire Nation, at the time, was filled with prejudice and hatred. Together with Zuko. Their union- after a hundred years of grudges, blood, hatred- would signify a new era of peace. While there would be resistance, the Fire Nation has long to go in this state. It's a step on the altar, a leap for humanity. Zutara, on so many levels, works so well and it's sad to see its potential wasted.

Kataang = Oedipus

Despite being a die hard Katang shipper, I definitely think they should've dated or been like exes or something, definitely would have helped and propel the storyline :]

Suki was more likable than Sokka in the live action show, that's odd.

I’m so annoyed that they removed sokka’s sexism but not pakku’s. Once we were getting to the North Pole, I was interested to see a non sexist northern water tribe. I find it so infuriating that they got rid of sokka’s sexism, which is an integral part of his character ark and growth, but kept in the Northern water tribe’s sexism. Keep both or neither in my opinion.

This is the trouble when you have to shorten the story for live action. Especially for the last air bender as its perfect down to the last detail so anything you miss out just makes the new show inferior and they missed alot out

From everything I have heard about the live action, I guess they thought character development was overrated?

Well... 😬To be fair Aang (Gordon Cormier) is pretty young the kid is a year older than me but still young so u can imagine having to kiss Katara(sorry i can't spell her name without seeing it) Back then it was a cartoon *NOT* a live action so kissing scenes are probably gonna get a little awkward 😬😂😂

Katara is roadkill for zuko. He needs a little toxicity and trash talk. For lack of a better phrase , edge. I honestly their character ares kinda end the path of their relationship. Hes not wounded anymore and shes not conflicted over her own anger. I thought those relationship dynamics were good when i was younger but its not going to keep the balance in the relationship

Aang was the avatar so he deserves the girl he always had a crush on. Zutara was toxic katara threatening zuko give me one reason that you might hurt aang and you won't have to worry about your destiny ends right then and there permanently. Plus it wouldn't make sense kataang was going to be end game from the start all the kisses she gave aang on the cheek. Plus she was the only one who could calm aang down when he's at his worst. He entered the avatar state when katara in trouble. He even gave up his chakra for katara once she was in trouble and went straight to katara. Zutara wouldn't make sense because there wasn't even a built up for zutara no romance it was only the cave scene and then it was gone zuko betrayed and went to his sister side. Aang and toph heck no toph wasn't even a attractive to attract aang plus he knew katara longer than toph. There was always a built up with aang and katara. And more chemistry. You just like zuko and katara because there looks oh they have chemistry because they both lost their mom's. They barely interact the only time they interact is when zuko trying to capture aang. And season 3 he joined the group katara hates his guts so they go on a trip to find katara mom killer. And boom katara forgives zuko. But katara never even showed romance towards zuko where was it oh there wasn't any. That's why it wouldn't make sense. Aang is the hero he's the avatar he already chosen his girl when he first met her love at first sight katara was confused about her feelings for aang but realized she really cares about aang and she always has.

There are some nice parallels to draw between the characters sure, but there's nothing else to go on.

I honestly don't realize see myself with Katara, to be honest.

I mean I honestly don’t mind that katara ended up with aang but at the same time I feel like they act more like siblings while Zuko and katara truly understand each other because they both were lost and depressed! Zuko and katara both lost their mom in a different way and I feel like they would definitely support each other through the good and the bad while aang is just like oh okay let’s have peace now and plus I can’t stand Mai because she treats Zuko like shit 💩

So interesting fact, Zutara was supposed to be cannon, and I love that I know this, however, Nickelodeon or whoever at the time couldn't see the prince of the Fire Nation falling in love with a peasant from the Water Tribe. If you think about it that's completely ridiculous because if we take the Northern Water Tribe and use it as a parallel, Sokka and Katara, The chief's children, would be considered royalty like Yue, except the Southern Water Tribe has less resources then the North because the Fire Nation took all the waterbenders except for Katara.

I love thinking about what might have happened if Zuko was healed in the cave under Ba Sing Se. I think Katara would have felt personally responsible for showing Zuko how to be better because they both lost their mothers to the fire nation. I think if that had happened then Zutara would have been cannon.

They literally destroyed him. Like you said they put some of the lines from the animated series so that everyone would think that they watched the show but the lines were nonsense almost every time they used it besides a few examples. And one of the biggest reasons I didn't like and understand the Netflix adaptation is that they called Katara a Waterbending Master. Still, she has never got a lesson even the tiniest lesson from Pakku and suddenly she is a Master.
