- In this video i show the process of refurbishing a Thinkpad X230 including: New Display (gloss w/ super deep blacks), new display housing/bezel, 9 cell battery (7.5 hours battery life), 500gb sata ssd w/ win10pro, 128gb mSata ssd w/ linux mint, 16gb ddr3 1600mhz + an ultrabase 3 w/ 500gb sata hdd for data and games!
its long, its relatively chilled, so grab a beer or a cup of tea and maybe have me nattering away in the background whilst you peruse the interwebs!

I was able to purchase an X230 a month ago, my first Thinkpad, and I can't believe how much I love it. I've upgraded the Ram and changed the HDD to SSD (first time I've ever worked on my own computer) and now it's perfect for me. Only thing is my top lid corner is chipped. I thought I'd replace it myself, but it seems too much work. Just watching you do that upgrade has me freaking out. I love, love, love the keyboard. I can see why Thinkpads have such a loyal fanbase. I'm resisting buying another.... even though I keep trolling the web for deals LOL. Thanks for this video. It was very informative!

Nice one Dave! You've just proved you can get a very capable Thinkpad for not a lot of money. If you are prepared to put in a bit of effort. Plus, you can never have too many Thinkpads! :)

Hi Dave, love the video. I have windows 11 pro installed, Finger print reader works like a charm. Had to hunt the correct drivers down and also do some registry tweaking but it will work. I even have the blue tooth Dongle working as well. I used the Ivyrain mod to unlock the bios so I can improve the wifi to 6E, and get a new aftermarket battery. Nice to see others who still use this little beasty.
Fun project ;) I hope the machine lasts you a long time before becoming obsolete (esp. since M1 hit the market). I have an x230 myself + a T480. Keep up the good work!

@@TechDave hehe haven't tried one yet ;). Not sure if I ever paln to, since I only play retro emulators, which are well served by the integrated gpu :O I was worried about the well known thunderbolt issue with the thinkpad models of this era though, but so far, nothing to report. Upgraded the bios as soon as I got it in Nov. 2020. Otherwise I'm running Linux Mint 20 (wiped windows right away). Debian is the distro I run on my x230 with KDE DE :)
@@benp2837 good lad! I am windows fool for most of my needs (mainly due to ableton 11 and only have windows installer) but mint ftw! I have been perusing the T460 with thunderbolt eGPU for a while now. If u spotted "the mothership" in the video, shes my main machine atm (i7 3770k 3.9ghz/ 32gb ddr3 2133mhz ~8tbs storage and xfx rx 480 8gb) until I can pick up a 2070 ti for an non-insane price.
Also: currently using the end result of this video w/ geforce now/ advanced dock(usb 3) 1tb external harddrive and a 2gb gtx 750 ti OC in prep for a follow up video
*love* my x230 and its awesome to have one again. Hows driver support on debian? Ive got mint 20(i think) on the 128gb msata ssd and was flawless, but currently got an ericson hw5321 wwan/mobile broadband card in its place for geforce now on the go
@@TechDave Nice! You're much more tech savvy then me though. As for driver support on debian, almost everything worked out of the box, except for bluetooth.There is an easy fix, for sure, but I'm lazy :) The fact that I installed the non-free debian version helps too. Although I've been using Linux for about 5 years, I still consider myself a newbie/normie XD. My field of study is psychology, far far away from computer science/programming :) I do hope you have/will fix that issue with windows not booting up. It sucks, esp. since you've just finished building the machine + the project took you quite a while. Take care ;)
Good on you for keeping this (perfectly adequate) old kit running Dave. I've still got all my 30-series models and they still don't seem to be showing their age in day to day use. The 430S is my current go to, but I've been thinking I should give the X230 a go again. I suspect they might do me until good value M1-like hardware that'll run Linux becomes available.
thanks dude! ye theres a lot of life left in them, and i missed my X230 so i had to have another one. im working on a full review of it this week with external gtx 750 ti 2gb and generally talking about the device.

me too! im getting used to the glossy panel now too that i installed. i *HAD* to have another x230, worked out cheaper to fix one up than buy one fully working, and made for a fun project

Some people use programmable scripts from what I heard hence why I said "I gotta learn it" . But your idea is easier ^^
