I am a 1963 born spanish metal sculptor, and i love your sailing videos and specially this aluminium project. I have had my share of back pains and i have a suggestion proposed to me by my doctor. ICE. Cold compress in your back is scary at first but it reduces inflamation and pain. Hot pads work for the organs but not for the spine. Good luck Bryan
Yoga Namaskar for spine health by Isha Foundation Sadhguru. Instructions are available and free here on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/apyQpY92Pvg/w-d-xo.html I am doing 3 cycles every morning and feel better and better, cant recomend this enough. Ps. I am enjoying your journey sailing and now building catamaran, thank you! 🌻
If you want to build really lightweight cabinetry, look into how the aircraft industry builds cabinets for private jets. A strong honeycomb center structure is covered with wood veneer or sometimes a plastic like melamine. There is a company in Brisbane called Jet Aviation Services that does aircraft cabinetry work.
That's an idea there's companies that strip and break airliners when they have reached their airframe and mechanical efficiency limits .. I've seen a used luxury Yatch reviewed by Nautistyles recently that had the kitchen furniture from a 747 in it and stainless tops the result was brilliant and lightweight. With all the anti burst catches and runners as standard. They were both impressed. 🧙🏻♂️🇬🇧 The other possibility is to put large top load freezer storage box under seating in the aft cockpit space .. lockable ... To act as a reserve store for long passages if the lid and inside splits it vertically you can sort and search it more energy efficiently. Insulation needs to be top notch. If you arrange a high point cabin hatch that has a collar that stands above the roof line you can fit a rain ☔ bubble hatch. You can open it ..angle it to catch or avoid wind and it will still keep a heavy downpour out You can also put a large diameter slow high volume brushless fan in the underside neck..these are better at moving large volumes of air quietly. You can also fit a bug screen and blind under neath. Closed and reversed it pushes heated air down from the high spot in the roof.🧙🏻♂️
The designs look great. This is my dream boat. Having stood 2-3 watches every day for most of three months on a catamaran, I really wanted a helm seat that was more like a couch, that I could put my feet up to one side and lean back (to the side). Even take a nap. It's also nice for two people who are close. What's more romantic than a little snuggling at the helm? I was on a Seawind and while the seat wasn't too bad, I just felt like I was always sliding off of it. (I cringe when I see boat show videos yapping about comfortable watches in these 'amazing'... ) Something my friends did with the storage compartments and cupboards, hanging locker in the cabins. They drilled holes between them all (40 mm) and in the hanging locker cut an even bigger hole and installed a computer cooling fan. Now air circulates through all the areas. But you guys have a lot of experience, so whatever you think of this is probably as good or better. And I'd be interested to know how you handle ventilation in enclosed spaces. On my boat I had some boat stink in the cupboard I keep my clothes. I had my clothes in plastic bins (like bathroom trash cans). So I just made some cheap DIY Drybags that they sit in. Everything is white. I can just pop one out, unroll the dry top, look into. Easy. Ideally I guess drawers would be better, but maybe that could be water tight. (On the catamaran we hit 5 days of fog and everything I had including the clean clothes jammed into what I thought was a tight enclosed space. It all smelled of mildew.) To get rid of boat stink on my boat, which wasn't at all bad, I used Chlorine dioxide to clear it out. It's easy to do, works incredibly well, nothing to clean up. It wipes out all mildew, mold, tobacco smoke, any bugs. (They use it in apartment buildings after someone dies and isn't found for a while.) The residue is table salt. Don't even have to wipe down any surfaces. But it does produce poisons chlorine gas, exactly the same used in the trenches of WWI so you have to know what you're doing. I even use it for small issues. Two weeks ago I lifted up the mattress of my forward berth and the bottom smelled a little... so I just set up my bucket, fan, aquarium bubbler. Put on a full face respirator, dropped in the tablets -- got off the boat. Came back the next day.
Former construction worker and back pain sufferer here. Don’t let the pain get out of hand. I recommend the book “The Back Mechanic” by Stuart McGill. He is the #1 authority on back pain. I have been in pain for around 10 years and this book has changed my understanding and lowered my pain significantly. The rehab program can also be used as a ‘prehab’ to make sure you don’t get hurt in the future. Best of luck!
I'm not an orthopedic expert, but I have had lower back and leg pains the same way you described. It sounds like a strained or pinched Sciatic Nerve issue. Lay down flat on your back, and gently raise your legs, one at a time, with the knee bent, and pull it with your hands toward your chest and hold for a few seconds. That stretches your Sciatic Nerve, and relieves the strain and the pain. Do it several times throughout the day till you start feeling better. It works for me every time, without drugs or a visit to a chiropractor. Good luck!
I know my diet has a big cause. Chocolates are a no no for me along with grain and popcorn. My Ileocecal valve irritates my sciatica nerve. My Chiropractor is how I found out about that. I also massage a trigger point to the right above my groin. It really lights up when that valve is irritated. And my lower sciatica nerve seems to relax lower back and upper legs. Wish my first few doctors helped me with cause not just symptom.
Brian: my brother John was both physically fit and worked long hours as a Master Plumber. He had serious lower back issue's starting just after his 50th birthday. A surgeon he played tennis with suggested surgery or physical therapy. John opted for physical therapy allowing for easement of his pain, back stretching exercises every morning for half and hour and again before he went to bed. Kaza, getting involved with the interior design is so exciting, you'll do wonderful with this project. Sierra appears to be enjoying both school and the social aspect of the build. Awesome amount of work to date.
I’ve had a dodgy back for years Brian. Best advice I have received is try to keep moving… once the muscles spasm and lock you’re in trouble for a week. Do nothing that causes more pain when it’s hurt. That includes physio, it just prolongs the injury. Avoid heavy lifting especially if your twisted and anti-inflammatories help if you must carry on. Loving this chapter in your lives. Wish I could pop over the ditch and run a few welds with you.
Hey Brian you already have 1000 comments so I will keep it short. I have the same back issue I know your pain, but it’s manageable. Anti-inflammatory right away and then stretch all day every time you feel it. Sit take your leg cross over your other leg bend forward. Reverse repeat you’ll be doing better next day. Now I’m not a dr and you have likely had 1000 suggestions. But as I said I know your issue I have the same issue plus. We are getting a little older but you have a few good decades left to be active. Start prioritizing your health and you’ll be good. Now normally I would not be making these suggestions but you are very adapt at fixing things on the boat and I appreciate that. I am good at keeping myself healthy and wanted to share that with you.
There can be another source of back pain that many people do not consider, and that is the quality of your work boots supporting your feet comfortably for not just the ordinary work day but the extended hours each day. I found this first hand when going from ten to twelve hour days, and got orthotic inserts made for my new high quality work boots. The knee and lower back pain disappeared almost overnight, with the improved foot support correcting the postural and spinal alignment. It brings a smile to my face when remembering the ahh-haa moment. Good luck with your build and your health.
My advice from a physiotherapist and a kinesiologist on my partially compressed disk and differentiated vertibra. Lay on your back on the floor with the back of your calves on a bed or chair. Draw your knees up to your chest and hold them there with your hands, pulling firmly for at least 60 seconds. Do this as many times as necessary to relieve the spasm. From that position attempt to sit up. You won't actually be able to sit up, but you will strengthen your abdomen, promoting better alignment of your pelvis. Repeat as many times as you're comfortable with. Lay on your side on the of a bench or a bed. Hold your top leg straight and swing it up toward your chest while allowing the weight of your leg to apply traction to your back. Hold for at least 60 seconds. I do this one a couple times per side every morning. I've been doing this routine for 40 years during which I've enjoyed a vigorous career as an electrician. I hope it helps.
The kinesiologist said that most lower baxk problems were the result of an imbalance. Back muscles to tense, abdominals to slack. Also, hip flexor is a back muscle. so regular sit ups will aggravate the problem. Hence the "on the floor, legs up" position from which the hip flexor can not possibly be tensed. As for posture, keep your weight over your feet. (Easier said than done for trades people.)
I know all about Brian's back pain... I've experienced EXACTLY what he's dealing with MANY TIMES. After 11 back surgeries I know all to well what's causing it but without imaging (MRI with contrast and without contrast) its difficult to know which of several reasons and locations are causing the pain and especially the rediculopathy (radiating pain in leg). Chances are the nerve roots are benng pinched by a spasming muscle. Also possible is a disc,. If he herniated a lower disc and it bulged or ruptured, hep porobably be in a LOT more pain and unable to walk. Best prescription is rest, muscle relaxers and pain meds for a few days and take it VERY SLOW when you return to ther boat to work. So those are my two cents worth guys! Good luck and I hope Brian feels better soon if he's not already by the time you posted this video! Cheers from Portland Oregon!
I’ve had couple of really bad cramps on my back in last couple of years. In my case it’s about iliopsoas muscle that tightens when sitting too much. Then it constantly pulls the other muscles in the back and can overwhelm them. I need to stretch them constantly to prevent additional cramps. Walking with long steps helps also. I feel the pain! Take it easy there! (Or as easy as possible 😅) Cheers!
You guys are doing a great job with this boat build series. We'll done Brian, figuring out what to film during long days on the job. Kaza, terrific editing work! Hope Sierra is having a blast in school. Growing up fast. Stay safe.
It took me a few years to understand that I don't really have a back problem, like so many middle age men, I actually have a front problem! Long story but I no longer work due to it. Strengthen your core Brian, listen to your body, respect it's needs and take time out, work smarter not harder. I ended up with surgical intervention to fix the pain. Tramadol is your friend but don't mask the issue with it. Keep up that amazing planning work Kazza, looking great.
It really helps. One other thing to do while thrusting your hip forward is to squeeze the abdominal muscles together. When you feel and hear a snap/crackle/pop, the job is properly done, and the ache or pain will instantly be gone.
Hi folks! Been watching ever since you were in Australia, with the Bundaberg episode, but actually the first time I'm commenting. Wanted to comment on the back. I've had L4-L5 and L5-S1 bulges since 2007 (better off getting a CT or MRI to confirm what is going on Brian!), and can recommend you a few stretches that *really* help. Won't go into detail - look it up - but I've been able to completely get away from painkillers by doing these stretches every day. Cat-Cow Knee-to-Chest lifts (laying down) Piriformis stretch (I prefer seated style) Sphinx stretch Knee rolls The latter is the most helpful, in that I can "adjust" my own spine with it. The others are really needed to keep everything lose. Locked down muscles HURT! If you guys do a meetup in Brisbane or surrounds, Mrs and I will come for sure - just up in Hervey Bay!
Thanks so much for saying hey after all these years, and for coming along on the journey with us! Will give those stretches a look for sure, appreciate the tips! Sending lots of good vibes to Hervey Bay, and keep an eye on the socials if plan any events in the area!
I have a few suggestions for the gally. Trash compactor, this is a huge benefit when you have longer passage and reduces the volume of trash when you get to port to unload. Dish washer, I have seen a few debates on this but every time having a dishwasher ends up being super useful. For super light weight cabinet materials contact Xanita board in Australia talk to Greg Nicholls he will be able to advise you
Hey Brian, your pain sounds like sciatica pain. I had sciatica pain for years off and on but eventually concocted this remedy for acute episodes. My remedy is to lay on a flat surface while putting a ‘very large’ cold pack on your ‘lower back’ area. This makes your body get really cold, so at the same time hold a microwave heated ‘rice sock’ in your hands to offset the discomfort of the frozen ice pack. While laying on the floor, always bend your knees and bring your heels to your butt. The previous works well and sometimes, I lay on the floor with my butt facing the front of the couch with my legs up and draped on the seat of the couch (hope that’s not confusing). I have a long term strategy to prevent sciatica as well if you’re interested.
I gotta tell you, as a welder myself, back pain is normal for being a welder. You just really gotta be mindful of your positions and to make sure you get good work boots, your feet can also cause back pain.
I demo'd by back about 10 years ago at a kickboxing camp in Thailand. I came back to NZ and did physio for 8 or so weeks which did absolutely nothing. The physio told me he had one more thing to try which was acupuncture. I was dubious but ultra keen to get myself sorted as that sharp lower back pain wouldn't relent. Did one session of acupuncture and NEVER felt the pain again. I never researched the science behind it, but for me it 100% sorted me out. Worth checking out :)
Hi Brian, I am having isthmic spondylolisthesis (slipped lower vertebrae) for 4 years now. What helps me is a hard sleeping surface (or a pillow under the butt) in order that my butt/hip doesn't sink in and my back is less arched. Otherwise, sometimes having to take pain killers and moving a lot, changing positions and walking. I can't stand for a long period without significant pain. I was told one option is the fusion of vertebrae, but this should only be considered if pain levels are really unbearable. So far, I am not in this stage to undergo this opeation. Stretching, decompression of the spine (hanging at a bar or being in a dip position) helps me, also avoid arching your back as good as possible. Stay strong! I hope you can find a solution that helps you.
I started a business over 17 years ago repairing scratched rims on cars. I bend over all day long. Every night when I shower I get the water as hot as I can stand it and let it run down my back to loosen up all the muscles and I bend and stretch to keep my back loose. I have not had any major back issues in those 17 years.
That is. A great way to help your body I have a chronic back condition . Initially I was on opioids I got myself hypnotized I only take over the counter pain relievers but I stretch and hot showers
@@damit505 hypnosis can be really effective if done right. That one women magicly made me stop smoking, with me not even having any craving or thoughts about it. Addictions just been gone. Been like i ve never smoked. From first day i could sit next to ppl that smoked, and when they started talking about: "Oh, im sorry, but i really gotta smoke now, i was like: "And why do you think i care? Go for it!"
Brian, get yourself a good Osteopath...they are simply amazing as they work with the full compliment of bone, muscles, nerves and how it all functions together. Trust me...a game changer ...
Yeah I can sympathise with Brian… slipped a disc just before last Christmas & only just starting to recover. They said I needed surgery but I am back on track with Pilates after a period of rest. Can only just start putting on shoes again. It was debilitating & frustrating for someone who is constantly on the go.
Hey Brian, certified PT here. I've dealed with back pain all my life due to training and tight muscles. You need to stretch your hip flexors and glutes A LOT! If you supplement that stretching with core training, you will have a sustainable solution for it.
I've herniated two discs in the past 13 years and have on and off sciatica, including a very recent flair. I truly empathize with you! For me, icing the area wins the day for pain every time. I have multiple x-large flexible gel packs and they've kept me mobile on many occasions. The only time I use heat is in conjunction with icing, not on its own. I alternate between the two (every 20 minutes or so) and always end on icing. I have a good back brace, a home TENS unit and a good local chiropractor in my bag of tools as well. Protect that back at all costs, because dealing with it as a chronic issue impacts the quality of your life in every way. That's one of two things I would go back and tell my younger self if I could. Outside of the financial limitations (which admittedly, is huge!! lol), the only other thing preventing me from pursuing my dream to sail the world is that I don't think I could physically do it because how fragile my back is. Anyway, loving the build and excited to see all of the thought and design going into the interior as well. Awesome job, guys!
I feel the pain! I've had back pain on and off since I was a teenager. But the last 3+ weeks have been bad. Keeping active and managing the pain is pretty well the most you can do without treatment. I find laying around or sitting too much makes it worse!
Keep up the great work..I'm replacing some plates on my small aluminium 5083 monohull as we speak. Chine finish without curves.. had some.tin worm electrolysis due to.leaking acid batteries. Lithium for the win. Boat is currently upside down in boat shed. gravity definitely helps with the tig welding... same as you. Uprated plates from 2.6mm to 4mm. Because it's a lot easier to weld too. Fair winds x
Physical Therapy for my back has really helped. I was really skeptical but learning stretches and realizing how the muscles affected my back has been awesome. Give it a try
I’ve been a furniture and cabinet maker and designer for most of my life, and having sketches and preliminary layouts like you are doing is extremely helpful when going to a carpenter to start the project. Your input will help them give you what you are looking for, so your time invested beforehand is well worth it. (I have also built sailboats and boat interiors so I understand how you need to make every space count). Love watching the build, and can’t wait to see you out on the water. 😊❤❤
Oh cool that's great to hear from the cabinet makers perspective...Kazz even made some sweet models that you'll see in a few episodes from now! Stoked you're enjoying the build, and thanks for coming along on the journey with us!
@@captainjimolchs Not necessarily. You can have all the weather info in the world, but there may be other factors. A few years ago on their Indian crossing they could have easily avoided a nasty storm... by heading for the Somali coast. They chose to press on to Madagascar (and into the storm) as the safer alternative. To me that was one of the more memorable episodes. Counting on being able to avoid bad weather because forecasting, having a fast boat, etc is like not wearing a seat belt because you know you are an excellent driver and can always avoid an accident
Glad to see that by the end of the video Brian was back on his feet! I had a similar issue and I found that hot baths with Epsom salts helped. Also, stretching and foam rolling as soon as I got out of the tub while my body was still hot. I used youtube videos to help me come up with stretches for the specific area.
Brian: I've had these kinds of back pain for the last 20 years. When it strikes, I get a fascia-massage asap to mobilize myself again and then do gentle exercises as much as possible. I found that the worst thing to do is taking painkillers and lying around for days. Takes much longer to recover. Get well soon!
10:08 You need Oxycontin or condone. I am a Podiatrist who had your symptoms. I know these videos are delayed but you should be on some powerful pain killers. Been there done that. And don't do physical therapy until you are better. Been there and done that and it only makes the recovery period longer. Questions, how far down your leg does the pain go? How many hours of sleep do you get before being awakened due to pain? BTW I used to practice in an office of Chiropractors and my impressions of that field is a negative one. But you are delayed by a week or two so....who knows. Go see a Podiatrist and an Orthopedic Surgeon to get a full evaluation. Get an MRI, X-Rays and a CT Scan as indicated. I'm sure I will get negative responses but that's OK. Get all the opinions you can.
Back pain relief - I had a stiff lower back for months, could not reach into the cup on a golf green to pick up the ball that went in, kind of stiff with pain, and I was then working in a medical research building. A thoracic nurse came by the office for something and heard me talking about it and she suggested trying a simple stretching technique to release trapped nerves in the spine. Essentially it is on the floor curled in a ball on both knees with back bent as far forward as possible and held for about a minute. Then reverse the bend laying flat on the floor pushing up with arms to reverse the curve of the spine and held for about a minute. That's it, only one bend in each direction and less than an hour later I felt relief. Since then anytime I get a twinge I just stop, do the curl exercise on the floor and relax, then soon after I am feeling "normal" again (whatever that is) but the important part was everything done gently and no forcing anything. I am sure this is all researchable and I lost the reference she had that was way longer than what I wrote in description here. I'm not a medical person so not going to say it's right for anyone else but maybe it is worth looking into.
I have had 2 back surgeries, going in for injections this Thursday. So hot showers with stretching. Stretching is not a instant thing, got to do it constantly for weeks. I truly helps. Muscle relaxers help a lot to
RE: your apparent sciatica issue, I have good success with "near-infared" devices that penetrate deep tissue. I like the flexible pads as they can be form fitted to any part of the body. I didn't think that I would but these boat building vids are amazing.
@@jaysummers9396 Chiropractic is itself a pseudoscience. A chiropractor damn near killed my little brother last year. Burst a blood vessel in his neck which by some miracle didn't cause a fatal stroke. He should have known better as another chiropractor put our dad in the hospital for a week when we were kids. Find an actual physical therapist.
You both are working so hard to build your dream boat!! You both should take a good long look at other newer Cat interior designs from other YTers (ie, Nick/Teresa, Jason/Nikki, etc.) to see what they included in theirs. It can't hurt to get ideas and see how they used their space. Best of luck.
I was an engineering tech, working with steel billets and lots of lifting of slabs. A chiropractor taught me that if you pull out the back, you should put your hands on the kidney positions to support it and then go horizontal but don't do anything in a sitting posture. Ice packs for thirty minutes with a five minute break help to restore the back as fast as possible or alternating heat and cold. When we were doing heavy lifting, either alone or together with someone else i was always aware of the feeling of tiredness in the back and if it felt tired, i would strap on a 6 inch weightlifters belt or a girdle. Sometimes if you make a little bit of a tear and strap it up with the belt tightly to support the back you can finish out the day. When you are doing a lot of heavy lifting, it is also good to think about wearing reinforced wrist protectors to protect the tendons near the thumb from snapping when you unload the hands.
I feel ya brother! I have had 1 back surgery and found out last year I have 2 more bad discs. There are a couple things that work well. 1. A good tens machine with large pads. 2. Heating pad 3. Movement. Walking, yoga, and stronger abs 4. Back brace when working and while walking. 5. Pills! 10mg Cylobenzaprine- 1 am/pm. 50mg tramadol- 2 pm and 1 if need during the day. 75mg diclofenac - 1 pm. You could add gabapentin for nerve pain or for your sciatica. It works well. This is the same cocktail I've been on for a decade with no issues. Best of luck Brian.
I slipped off a high stool and fell on my butt. Same description of pain as Brian had. I used an inversion machine to hook my ankles and hang upside down for 2-3 times daily for about 5-10 minutes at a time to decompress the spine. After a few days I rotated gently from the hips side to side while inverted. Surgeon wanted to do a laminectomy. The inversion over a few months fixed the problem. I have been painless for years now.
i had bad back injurie years ago - almost wheelchair. All doctors have recommended to exercise mostly the sixpack area to have strong muscle corset. Hope you will be soon ok and all the best Brian.
I threw out my back three months ago and then it turned in sciatica with the shooting pains on my right leg and going on for three months. I finally got an epidural Cortizone injection, but so far it hasn’t helped. I’m glad you healed quicker.
I've been living with back issues since 1993, back surgery in 2000 helped me tremendously. CHriopractor, stretching and strengthening the area. Aleeve, Advil, Motrin all work to help at different times. Also Ice and heat at different times helps too. Good luck with it.
I have had plenty of back pain and Icing it regularly along with stopping doing what ever you are doing to irritate it is the best advice I have. Ibuprofen also helps to relieve inflammation and reduce pain. I love the looks of the new boat and it is obvious that you have found some great people to get this project done. I also love building with aluminum.
Dear Brian, for your back pain and suspicion of herniated disc, first try hot showers, take 2-3 DAYS REST and order à very simple lumbar belt (Or belt hold) and soon as possible and tighten it well. A reputed surgeon wanted to operate...But before I asked and old "spine" specialist who just advised me to buy a waist belt or lumbar belt... Keep it for as long as you can if you still feel pain... Good luck ! and love from France to the three of you !
Another great video guys. Sorry to see the big man hurt and out of action though. It is crazy how much the boat progressed whilst he was out of action however! Thanks as always for the positive content!!!
Oh it's fantastic to see you couple working on the new cat. It's exciting 😃. How wonderful to watch. Over the years it's been great but this is exciting ❤ love you all
Wow, the boat is really coming together. That's a lot of welding to seal everything. And designing the interior is a huge project. My prayers are with you to make the right decisions. Be safe!
One of my jobs at the chiropractor's was teaching how to keep enough motion to repair the disc without re injuring it. The trick was laying on back with legs supported on large exercise ball. pushing on elbows creates a walking reflex which rocks the legs to the opposite side. Repeating this several times a day strengthens the tissue to support the weight when back on the feet.
Love you guys! Thanks for including the family stuff along with the boat building. It keeps me watching your channel. Always like to see what the Nugget is doing. Be well. ❤
Yoga can do wonders for back sprains. You guys know that already. Been following you guys for like 6 years now under a different account. This is a HUGE milestone.
I can relate to his back pain, but I'm 80yrs old. To help me get to sleep at night I use melatonin. I have been following your channel for years. I can't wait to see you back on the water.👌
Prolapsed a disc badly playing sport when I was just 26. Couldn't stand within minutes and spent a week in bed. Have had issues many times since, I'd say about a dozen times at least. Last bout was a few months ago. For me the solution has been a fine balance between rest and standing and walking a little to try to stay mobile which sounds like both are counter intuitive. Concentrating on posture as well, especially when sitting to make sure you don't slouch, also keeping head up so no looking down at tablets, computer screens etc. If it is lower back, which is often the case, there are the mckenzie exercises to try to get the disc back into place. Usually takes me about 1-3 weeks to start feeling semi normal again, and as much as 1-2 months before I feel confident in doing anything more dynamic than just walking and moving around.
1.) sleep on the floor or any hard surface. It is actually counter intuitive.. a soft mattress makes the body hard, a hard floor, makes the body soft. 2. You can can also try some basic inversion techniques, using a couch or bed mattress to hang your head off the end of it and scootch toward the edge, letting gravity help provide some decompression. 3.) keto/carnivore diet removes a lot of carbs (and inflammation) from the body. So those are my 3 tips for back pain. I hope it helps.
If I were going to design a galley, I would have stainless steel cabinets, no wood-based material. I was going to suggest an upright fridge and pullout drawers for a freezer, but since you do not plan to have a bulkhead to build against, pullout drawers for refrigeration might be more convenient (no bending down to search for food). I would have another refrigerator and freezer located in one of the pods. Also, count on installing at least a one-drawer Fisher & Paykel dishwasher (see Gone With the Wynns). I'm feelin' your back pain with you, Bryan, and hoping all the remedies you mentioned will have the best effect. Nice going, Karin, back into the design field!
From my massage therapy days I would suggest several things: 1) Avoid not moving around. Slow down, but don’t stop for minor aches. 2) After a hard day use cold packs for initial reduction in inflammation. 3) Ongoing use alternating hot and cold packs. A good place to start is heat 4 times as long as cold. 4) Stretch, stretch, stretch
@Sailing SV Delos so sorry to see Brian going through such pain. Once that happens once it’s very easy to do again. Do some Physio to keep the nerve sliding correctly everyday once you’re healed up. The muscles tightening up is to protect the disk, which causes much more inflammation and pain. Be careful you guys, we all look so forward to seeing you and what you’re up to each week! Kaza….you are so talented with all of the designs and drawings. Wow this project, to build your dream boat is fascinating and and enthralling! I can not wait to see more! Hope Sierra is doing wonderful in school! ❤
As for back pain when my old injury gets aggravated I use a 60cm exorcise ball to lay on top of to stretch out. I flip face up then down to help loosen up those lower back nerves. Heat before stretching & cold when it flares up to reduce swelling.
Hi love your videos, I suffer from a sore back from time to time so I use a weight lifters belt which is 100mm wide which holds and supports the lower discs in place, If I have a sore back I can still work all day, I hurt my back when I was 15 years old and have being using the belt for 49 years now and no surgery. Good luck with the build.
45 peak seasons at UPS, I feel your back pain. What I learned is bend at the knees as much as possible, and keep your torso vertical, the slightest lean off of vertical torso is all it takes to hurt the back again. Now that you have done it once, it’s so much easier to hurt it again. Kaza working on the galley/salon was super fun to see.
I've got 2 herniated discs in my lower back. I've got a chiropractor/physical therapist that has worked wonders for me and I'm feeling pretty good these days. I've also learned not to lift and twist at the same time. I can do either one separately but not together. I also listen to what my back is telling me while I'm doing either of those things and I've learned when to stop instead of just powering through like I used to. I hope yours doesn't continue to plague you
@Brian, for me, my lower back pain is well managed by regular physiotherapist visits. After getting things under control you can then visit as a proactive, not reactive exercise. Do it as an investment in you, your family and your livelihood. On bad days, I use a small gel hot/cold pack by heating it in the microwave and then tucking it in my waistband. (smaller ones tend not to slip out). Find a nice 'mean' physio who will stretch you without mercy (half joking half serious). I'm also lucky that my GP (general medical practitioner) started out as a physio and so I run the exercises I've been given by him as well 🦴🦴🦴 Loving this build and the way you guys use your storytelling and editing skills to keep us so well informed 🤩👍🎥
i think Kaz and Bryan could be amazing custom boat consultants. Their knowledge and practical experience are first-rate, and their teamwork and complimentary skills make a powerful duo! Really enjoying this series - best wishes on the build, I cannot imagine what a HUGE undertaking this has been!
Looking good 🎉 I used to have back problems in the morning after sleeping. I found putting a sheet of plywood between the mattress and box spring solved the problem. Then noticed the mattress store had special boards that they sold. Enjoying this build series 🎉
Suffered a back injury when I 18 years old playing sports. It plagued me for years. Even had surgery which helped, but was not 100%. In my thirties I aggravated it playing gold and was a couple of years suffering a lot. Then I had a new doctor basically show me how to sleep at night (using a body pillow) and had me wear a back brace even when I was not in pain. After 3 months, the pain was gone. I'm still careful and still sleep with the body pillow, but haven't had to use the back brace in years. I just turned 50 this past March and play golf regularly and haven't had any issues in years. I give full credit to that doctor that taught me how to sleep in such a way to remove all stress on my back at night and making me wear that back brace for so long, as uncomfortable as it was. I guess it gave my back the time it needed to heal up finally. Of course I'm super careful and always consider my back when doing anything physical, but learning how to sleep correctly has ensured I haven't had to wear the brace for the past decade.
I've always worked very physical jobs with lots of bending and lifting. I use very light traction for sciatic pain like an inversion table or ankle weights and a pool noodle in water, plus a TENS unit, icing and cbd balm. Daily stretching and ab strengthening is key to keeping flares at bay. Gotta keep the core of you strong to keep the spine in proper alignment.
i have had reconstructive spinal surgery do to 13 fractures and 8 crushed discs and more. So what you are feeling is the sciatic nerve running down your leg it sucks ive been there hang in there be careful your spine is nothing to play with. Good luck on the build it looks great. I cant wiat for your first underway.
Really enjoying the build video. I am a builder and have had a lot of experience with back issues and have spent a lot of money navigating the best way to fix the back.. For what its worth, the chiropractor's are good for the short term fix, dont let them anywhere near you neck with those little percussion guns. The key for completely fixing my back was deep tissue remedial massage...dont let those muscles set in their new positions. The massage hurts a lot but if you keep it up it will sort it out. Good luck with it.
Great progress. Brian take care of yourself. Those back issues can become permanent. Check with the other guys and see what they do differently and learn from that.
I had back pains lots when I was younger I found working my core to be the best solution once through the bad pain. I’d do sit ups to strengthen my stomach. Thats been my go to solution for decades now. I’m 65 and rarely suffer from back pain but when I do I focus on my core for a couple days. Always works
Glad Brian is feeling better. I have a bad back and know the pain you are feeling. The boat is looking great every video it looks more like a boat. All the space you will have. And you will fill it
Also for lower back pain.. when your at home after work. Take a soup can. Sit and watch TV. Roll the can under your feet. This will help the foot arch, realine all the bones. I think the foot has 150 bones. When a arch starts to fall. Major lower back pain. Good luck..great to see Nugget have so much fun on land.
Healing prayers for your back Brian 🙏🏻 I’ve have had back pain for just short of forty five years now. It’s no fun . It started in my early twenty’s. I usually just tuff it out. And forget to take any pain meds for it. 🙏🏻
Excellent showing of the build process, thank you! Stretching, daily, helps the back adjust to stress, especially rapid stress that age doesn't accept very well. Water replenishes the muscles, and stretching lets the body know what it has to do. (:
Hey Brian, sorry to hear about your back. You're probably healed already by the time this video was released on TH-cam. I was plagued with lower back pain for years. Very crippling! It turned out that my IT job was the culprit. Sitting for long hours. My back completely healed after I left that job 5 years ago. Try wearing a back brace.
There's nothing like an inversion machine stretch!
I would also recommend DMSO with Arnika. Works wonders for me. The DMSO will transport Arnika deep into the tissue.

Ps. I am enjoying your journey sailing and now building catamaran, thank you!

The other possibility is to put large top load freezer storage box under seating in the aft cockpit space .. lockable ... To act as a reserve store for long passages if the lid and inside splits it vertically you can sort and search it more energy efficiently. Insulation needs to be top notch.
If you arrange a high point cabin hatch that has a collar that stands above the roof line you can fit a rain ☔ bubble hatch. You can open it ..angle it to catch or avoid wind and it will still keep a heavy downpour out
You can also put a large diameter slow high volume brushless fan in the underside neck..these are better at moving large volumes of air quietly.
You can also fit a bug screen and blind under neath. Closed and reversed it pushes heated air down from the high spot in the roof.🧙🏻♂️
Yes, Western Star class 8 trucks use an aluminum honeycomb poly sandwiched for their lightweight sleepers. The internal cabinetry is the same.
Very clever and excellent suggestion.
(I cringe when I see boat show videos yapping about comfortable watches in these 'amazing'... )
Something my friends did with the storage compartments and cupboards, hanging locker in the cabins.
It all smelled of mildew.)
To get rid of boat stink on my boat, which wasn't at all bad, I used Chlorine dioxide to clear it out.
Good luck!
I,m a chiro and i found that back pain is due usally aillium are poseiror and inferior and this cases a loss of lordosis
Prayers it isn't a herniated disc.
@@petewilda284 Modern medicine cures, prayers do nothing.
The build is becoming a boat. The boat is becoming a home. Congratulations on making another dream come true.
Thanks so much, we really can't believe it, so exciting!
I realized Kazza and Brain are a great team together they can make anything happen they are great planners
I'm glad it wasn't too serious and you were up feeling better in a short while.
Thanks for sharing.
You never cease to amaze me with your hard work and dedication. May the best of your today be the worst of your tomorrow.
🙏
(Or as easy as possible 😅)
Cheers!
You guys are doing a great job with this boat build series. We'll done Brian, figuring out what to film during long days on the job. Kaza, terrific editing work! Hope Sierra is having a blast in school. Growing up fast. Stay safe.
🙏
It took me a few years to understand that I don't really have a back problem, like so many middle age men, I actually have a front problem! Long story but I no longer work due to it. Strengthen your core Brian, listen to your body, respect it's needs and take time out, work smarter not harder. I ended up with surgical intervention to fix the pain. Tramadol is your friend but don't mask the issue with it.
Keep up that amazing planning work Kazza, looking great.
For pinned disk, stand up and trust your hip forward. It pushes the disk back. That was my physiotherapist advise and it has helped me every times.
Cat-Cow
Knee-to-Chest lifts (laying down)
Piriformis stretch (I prefer seated style)
Sphinx stretch
Knee rolls
The latter is the most helpful, in that I can "adjust" my own spine with it.
Im a pressure vessel welder myself, and I have back pain as well. I enjoy what I do, but it comes at a cost.
Hoka shoes seemed to relieve all of my leg and back pain. Make sure to get properly matched. Arahi 7 worked for my feet.
Worth checking out :)
nice friday gift for us all. thanx
Hi Brian,
I am having isthmic spondylolisthesis (slipped lower vertebrae) for 4 years now.
That is. A great way to help your body
I have a chronic back condition .
Initially I was on opioids I got myself hypnotized I only take over the counter pain relievers but I stretch and hot showers

Welcome to the world of labour!! Hurts everytime. Takes time too heal. All the best!!
I love the company uni. Sharp dressed man.
Physical Therapy for my back has really helped. I was really skeptical but learning stretches and realizing how the muscles affected my back has been awesome. Give it a try
Cbd and comfrey poultice… game changer
The Cat will be very challenging to sail in heavy weather. Make sure you have a very good drag line to prevent surfing hulls in huge swells
With all that tech, would it be possible to incorporate a water-brake or something into the design?
Huge swells are beyond their design parameters. Satellite weather will keep them out of it, as it has done in the past.
Sure seems to be going alot smoother than Pluckys build
I have wrecked my back many times! A good massage therapist can really make a big difference! Feel better. ❤️🩹
I have had 2 back surgeries, going in for injections this Thursday. So hot showers with stretching. Stretching is not a instant thing, got to do it constantly for weeks. I truly helps. Muscle relaxers help a lot to
I good chiropractor is priceless - good to see you making a swift recovery Brian 👍
RE: your apparent sciatica issue, I have good success with "near-infared" devices that penetrate deep tissue. I like the flexible pads as they can be form fitted to any part of the body. I didn't think that I would but these boat building vids are amazing.
Find a chiropractor straight away. (not an osteopath)
I'm pretty certain they're not into pseudoscience 😉..
@@jaysummers9396 Chiropractic is itself a pseudoscience. A chiropractor damn near killed my little brother last year.
Yeah we definitely are going for a clean, modern look on the interior, would be great to check out what they've done!
Sorry about your back! If it makes you feel better I'm 27 and dealing with the same issue! project is looking amazing and those design drawings! wow!
I feel ya brother! I have had 1 back surgery and found out last year I have 2 more bad discs. There are a couple things that work well.

2. Heating pad
3. Movement. Walking, yoga, and stronger abs
What helps me with back problems are yoga, a theragun, and a good memory foam mattress
It may be hard work but his efforts will pay off big time.
Knowing your own hone inside and out and new skills for life. ❤
I can't wait to see you back on the water.👌
i suffer chronic back pain from disk & facet joint damage, i use a back brace & heat packs, helps a lot, wish you a speedy recovery
From my massage therapy days I would suggest several things:
1) Avoid not moving around. Slow down, but don’t stop for minor aches.
2) After a hard day use cold packs for initial reduction in inflammation.
3) Ongoing use alternating hot and cold packs. A good place to start is heat 4 times as long as cold.
4) Stretch, stretch, stretch
I LOVE the extented roof and the bathing platform with tender storage , genius !! And the construction around the rudders.
Thanks so much, we really love these aspects of the design too, especially the skeg rudder!
Incredible work and that skeg..... Love it. It reminds me a little of The Nautilus in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
As for back pain when my old injury gets aggravated I use a 60cm exorcise ball to lay on top of to stretch out. I flip face up then down to help loosen up those lower back nerves. Heat before stretching & cold when it flares up to reduce swelling.
Awesome progress, design, recovery. You're keeping this interesting.
I hope yours doesn't continue to plague you
It's so cool to see Kaz's mad skills!
Lower back injury, sleep on a hard surface, acupuncture works for around 7 days, chiro helps a lot, stretching once the pain goes
Impressive welding skills. Looking forward to her launch and your next adventures. Stay Safe.
i think Kaz and Bryan could be amazing custom boat consultants. Their knowledge and practical experience are first-rate, and their teamwork and complimentary skills make a powerful duo! Really enjoying this series - best wishes on the build, I cannot imagine what a HUGE undertaking this has been!
Wow thanks so much for the kind words, stoked to hear you're loving the build videos! Thanks for coming along on the journey with us!
Healing prayers for your back Brian 🙏🏻
I’ve have had back pain for just short of forty five years now. It’s no fun . It started in my early twenty’s. I usually just tuff it out. And forget to take any pain meds for it. 🙏🏻
Sierra’s screams by far my fav!
Excellent showing of the build process, thank you! Stretching, daily, helps the back adjust to stress, especially rapid stress that age doesn't accept very well. Water replenishes the muscles, and stretching lets the body know what it has to do. (:
Once heeled, sit ups to strengthen core have been the best preventative measure for me !!
