Just a fantastic venture! Brian and Karen, you guys have reinvented this channel in such a good way and you guys have so got your mojo back! Your early videos were legend and now with this build series, you are setting up for some great suff. To be honest, I am not sure what is more exciting.. the build process and the possible business angle, or the sailing. I guess doing both is the key. You ventures in this Catamaran would tie in with supproting and promoting the business of making them - ala Tony Fleming from Fleming Yachts. Not a bad life where you get to test out the models over a few years as you sail the world and increase sales. Sure do hope that you are making wise plans to launch a business out of this. The orders will start coming in big time I suspect.
As an old (78) owner/skipper of two 40' fiberglass catamarans (built 1978 and '85 in Italy) I am really happy and very proud to see almost all famous u-tubers finally switching to cats! This confirms my at the time very controversial idea that cats were safer and better for cruising ! ( I sailed from the Med to Thailand against the trades 1979 to 84) Cheers!
My parents were owner-builders of the house I grew up in. It took 3 years to complete, and we lived there for many years. The great thing about that is you know every brick, every screw, and every cable of your house. I still remember all of this 45 years later. Same thing for your new yacht. Huge benefit over just buying one, and finding out stuff afterwards. ATB Delos!

I’m never sailed in my life but have been watching your videos for years and have heard many sailing terms but I’ve never been able to fully comprehend exactly how upwind sailing works until you gave the water melon seed example!
21:20 editorial note, a "Jig" positions a tool for a specific task. For example a routing jig used to chamfer plates. A "Fixture" is used to position parts together for assembly. Hence the boat is being built on a Fixture, technically. This kind of stuff drives engineers crazy.
@@svdelos One other small thing I've noticed in recent weeks (not this video though); When referring to millimeter measurements, you often call it "mil", but you shouldn't... because mil is an actual measurement used to gauge thicknesses all over the place. It is 1/1000 of an inch- 1 mil. Minor thing, but thought I'd point it out. Just so sometime in the future, you don't order something based on "x" mil thickness, because you might not get what you expect! Good stuff though. I'm enjoying the new vibe, and I've been here since episode 12. Still have my "old" Delos t shirt from your very first release. We have almost crossed paths a couple times, were on Culebra at the same time, and again in San Juan I think? Anyway... good luck with the new boat.
Found the SV delos crew on youtube 3 years ago and glad i did. wachted every episode and it didnt take long till i started saving money for travelling the world instead of buying nice cars and other boys stuff. Its been 8 months now since i quitted my job, rented out the house and started travelling. Next year i will sell everything and move out of the cold and wet Netherlands and move to the South of Spain. Not gonna be living on a boat because i am on my own and i rather be on land. Thank you so much SV delos, you guys made me leave my comfort zone.... live life , see the world, get inspired , so many good things. ❤ See you next week
Here I am, six videos in, watching a boat being built. I don't care what kind of content you guys put out, I'm here for the entertainment and excellent film making. I'm always sucked in.
They also take the weight off the rudders. There are some Keel cats... usually the larger ones... that employ rotating drop blade keels that raise and lower on Winches or rams. This helps them sail closer into the wind.. In light airs you can reduce the drag by using a single dagger blade. The freeboard and bridge deck clearance largely determine the seakeeping and speed in rougher conditions. One thing many cats lack are chines ..these can be very useful both in controling internal volumes avoiding porpoising and spray control.. but even curved hulls like this you can benefit from spray strakes or rails back from the bow and turning the bow waves over and down ...V🌊 because around 10kn a V hull can start to generate lift.. If you want to see a clean rooster tail being left by a Cat tanking down a run take a look at the ones behind Second Star a Windelo 54'. Or a Rapier 500 Deepblue. Still a radical GT design where you can sail 95% from inside the boat as that's where the mast and all the ropes are handled from. It can also monitor the loads and de-power the rig in a second if it detects a dangerous loading. If you want to race or just shoot the breeze in the sun You can switch to back up helms at the rear of each hulls deck with remote buttons to control the winches. Both vessels are designed to be sailable single handed with very little fatigue or strain in all latitudes and conditions. Both are capable of powering up to high twenties in kn ..but cruising effortlessly at all day at 12…16kn. Like Delos 2 whoever's at the helm can see and talk to everyone indoors and out front.

I always wanted a "performance cat" because I am keen on sailing fast in light wind and I want to be able to point high upwind. So, initially if I was going to buy a cat (which I probably never will) I would have chosen dagger boards. But then I read about the fixed keel benefits, and that is what I would get. I'm not into racing. I want to beach the cat if needed. The pointing is more for safety on a lee shore and saving on tacks. It sounds as though you have there a compromise option also. Not a full dagger board but a swing keel. Would also be worth researching. Cheers.
Hi. I would be interested however to know what the pointing ability of your fixed keel design is expected to be. How close to the wind can you go compared with a full on 2 meter twin dagger board set up?
For someone like me that has giving up on boating for a lot of reasons, I still enjoying watching SV delos for the nostalgy of owing a boat and the dread of owning them. It is really not the initial cost of owing a boat, it is the upkeep and maintenance required to keep it running for you. You trade up the wonderful life experiences living in remote places for the expensive and constant maintenance that requires it to keep it that way. I am glad that people like SV delos can do it thru the financial mechanism that you tube has giving them. Hopefully the message does not get transversed with the idea that anyone can do it the same way.
hope you bring her down to the Gold Coast once she's finished , I would love to see her in our waters, building Delos 2.0 has been a great series to watch so far, looking forward to watching the progress as you go forward

The sharp edge of the minikeels is not the leading edge, but the trailing edge. The resistance caused by a wide leading edge is a lot smaller than the drag caused by a wide trailing edge.
Have to admit I wasn’t looking forward to yet another build sequence on TH-cam. Once again you have raised the bar and have made this series exceptional. Now I am looking forward to the next episode.

My boat was 53 X 26 ft, 10.5 tons lightship, daggerboards, massive daggerboards, about 200 lbs each, oregon skinned in glass. To windward in decent size swell, your better off hand steering, while in the trough of the wave, you can crack off and speed up, then as you approach the peak, squeeze up to slow up. It's not like sailing a mono. With one dagger board down your track moves to windward by 15 degrees, both down add another 5, the boards are placed based on the sail plan centre of effort, mine was a mast head cutter, so the staysail was the windward tool and genoa the multitask tool. Dagger boards afford less water needed to float and more options to sail.
Just love the build and the boys are doing a great job massaging all the pieces into place. Can’t wait to you see beach this baby on a beautiful sandy beach somewhere!

Daggerboards actually allow you to go more slowly. That is if you wish to sail comfortably upwind in strong winds, the additional lift is gained at a lower speed. If you ground unintentionally, you have a chance of sliding off.

The area of the daggerboards is tiny compared to the area of the hull. Putting them down doesn't substantially change the amount of sideslip the boat experiences. However! When you sail upwind, the sail is close to the boat, the lift vector from the sail points farther from the direction you want to go, and the amount of lift that the hull and keel have to make is greatest. Dropping daggerboards substantially increases the SPAN over which that sideways lift is spread. Spreading lift over a larger span reduces the induced drag. It's a very strong effect: doubling the span for the same lift cuts the induced drag by a factor of 4. It's actually a little stronger than that because the reduced drag means the boat goes a little faster and that also reduces (not a typo) induced drag even more. The induced drag shows up as a vortex coming off the bottom of the keel or daggerboard, and you see it as turbulence in your wake. Daggerboards let you sail closer to the wind not because your sideslip rate goes down, but because you go faster through the water with less drag for a given amount of sideslip.
I always enjoy watching machining processes.... what is the sail area to boat ratio in comparison to a monohull, btw? Delos 2.0 is going to be an expeditionary monster, maybe they'll let you sail the Antarctic Circle....

I remember when people were saying a catamaran won't right itself if it rolled , I've personally never heard of a catamaran doing that.
Suggest to them to put that welder on an overhead track so they don’t have to lift it so many times. It will save them so much time and their backs.

To windward in decent size swell, your better off hand steering, while in the trough of the wave, you can crack off and speed up, then as you approach the peak, squeeze up to slow up. It's not like sailing a mono. With one dagger board down your track moves to windward by 15 degrees, both down add another 5, the boards are placed based on the sail plan centre of effort, mine was a mast head cutter, so the staysail was the windward tool and genoa the multitask tool. Dagger boards afford less water needed to float and more options to sail.

Daggerboards actually allow you to go more slowly.
That is if you wish to sail comfortably upwind in strong winds, the additional lift is gained at a lower speed.
If you ground unintentionally, you have a chance of sliding off.

The area of the daggerboards is tiny compared to the area of the hull. Putting them down doesn't substantially change the amount of sideslip the boat experiences.
However! When you sail upwind, the sail is close to the boat, the lift vector from the sail points farther from the direction you want to go, and the amount of lift that the hull and keel have to make is greatest. Dropping daggerboards substantially increases the SPAN over which that sideways lift is spread.
Spreading lift over a larger span reduces the induced drag. It's a very strong effect: doubling the span for the same lift cuts the induced drag by a factor of 4. It's actually a little stronger than that because the reduced drag means the boat goes a little faster and that also reduces (not a typo) induced drag even more. The induced drag shows up as a vortex coming off the bottom of the keel or daggerboard, and you see it as turbulence in your wake.
Daggerboards let you sail closer to the wind not because your sideslip rate goes down, but because you go faster through the water with less drag for a given amount of sideslip.
