      Thanks Linda! Mom's quilt turned out really well, but I'm in a bit of a rut with these blocks and almost always make this trip around the world layout. Maybe next time I'll break out and be a bit different!

    What great timing. The Log Cabin is the first quilt I plan on starting in 2024 and I this one will be for me.

    Thank you for a lesson in how to piece more efficiently. Both finished quilts are lovely. Also love that you call your fabric a "collection" and not stash. Such a nice connotation Michelle.

    • @bitspiecesquilting

      Hi Delia - you know, I never noticed before, but you're right. I don't really use the word stash when I'm thinking / talking about my fabric. It really is a collection - things I have added and curated and "de-collected" over the years. Thanks for watching.

    I think I like the star layout the best. I really don't like using a white background in a quilt. Think I will try it with another background color. Thanks for sharing.

    • @bitspiecesquilting

      Hi Cynthia - I was surprised how good the star layout looked on camera versus in real life. The star was actually hard to see. And I'm a creature of habit, so I went with my standard layout. There are so many colour combinations that would work well for the background fabric and the scrappy strips. Enjoy!

    I'm wondering why you call it the half log cabin when you are making a whole log cabin block?

    • @bitspiecesquilting

      Hi Cathlyn - for me this is only a half log cabin block. A full log cabin block in the traditional style would have two sides with coloured / printed pieces and two sides with background pieces (and the red square in the centre). Or if you put the coloured sides on opposite sides, you would have Courthouse Steps. They are all excellent options to use up scraps!

    Thanks for the scrapbuster! On the layout with the star in the middle, what do you think would have been different that you would have chosen that one? I would like to try that one, but I want to do it right, so what would you suggest? Different color? Different background? TIA

    • @bitspiecesquilting

      Hi Kay - great question. I think there are a few things that might have helped for the star layout. The first is likely a bigger quilt - with a layout of only 6x8, it doesn't give the star much space to "shine", so a larger quilt might help with that. The second is that I'm a creature of habit and I like what I like, so my standard layout for these blocks is what I usually use (I know - I need to break out of habits!!). Contrast is also important, but I think that's well covered in these blocks, so not likely an issue. Thanks for watching!

    • @bitspiecesquilting

    • @bitspiecesquilting

    Has anyone asked this question: is there a chart showing the length of the 2” strips to reduce scrap?

    • @bitspiecesquilting

      Hi Judy - not yet. Part of the technique is to "guestimate" and use the lengths as they fit. But the math isn't too difficult. After sewing your 2 inch squares together to start, the next pieces should be 3.5 (one light, one dark), 5 (also one of each), 6.5, 8, and 9.5. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks Diana and welcome! Our Community Round Robin project is coming along well and we are working on getting the final details together, the blocks made and the videos filmed. It's a process! Thanks for watching.

      Hi Patricia - I love the grey fiskars mat for cutting; it is my favourite of all the cutting mats I have. Thanks for watching.

    Why is it called a half log when in actuality is a quarter of a log

      Hi Sky Maiden - good question! I guess I've always seen it called a half log cabin, so stuck with the name. I just used Google images to search for both "half log cabin" and then "quarter log cabin", and many of the same images came up both times!!! I guess we all need a bit of geometry lesson! Thanks for watching.

    Just because of Christmas fabric, you didn’t show nothing new.

      Hi Erika - it is very rare to see a completely original quilt block. Quilters build on the knowledge and designs of those before us and while we might use a new tool, or a new approach, it is still a traditional craft with lots of history.
