I just watched another well known quilter use an expensive ruler to square up the blocks, and each block was made of pieces cut exactly to size. How refreshing to see Jenny’s freestyle method which still achieves fantastic results! Jenny, you’re an inspiration. You make me feel I can have a go and it won’t matter if the result isn’t perfect. I’m off to source a jelly roll right now 😊
I was told when I first started quilting that you did NOT just sew on a piece for a log cabin and trim it!! As I was doing. So glad to see an Expert so it that way!!!! Thank you!
There is a quilt pattern, Lovers Knot which is a variant of log cabin. It was the first pattern I ever did, and the book said to use the add and trim method. As long as your seams are consistent your blocks should all come out the same size. Not necessarily an exact 10 inch, but the same. Also, finished is better than perfect. If you like it - that’s good enough.
Lordy Honey. .I've ordered the Bias Binding for my last 3 quilts. ..I'm so spoiled. With pre-wound Bobbins and pre- made binding. .I'm in Love!!! 10 yards seams to cover any size Quilt. So I order it along with Fabric. .then when quilt tops done . .no worries. So exciting!
Please don't feel bad about making mistakes. When you do that it actually helps me! When I see a professional make a mistake, it helps me to not cut myself down when I make yet another mistake. Thank you for showing your human side!
I want to be as awesome as Jenny one day! She is my favorite instructor and makes you feel like you can make any of the patterns. I love the little tips she shares.
Hi Jenny . I am from Saudi Arabia and I am one of the people who waited for your tutorials first in Friday morning.this pattern is in my list thank you
Abdulrahman Alkurashi....LOL...I either wait until 1 am (I live in the Midwestern United States) OR I will get up around 12:45 am to watch Jenny's newest video of the week! Do you watch the Triple Play from Missouri Star Quilt Company (MSQC)???? Every 3 weeks, Jenny, her daughter Natalie & Misty who is Jenny's daughter-in-law (she's married to Jenny & Ron's son Jake) do a video on a certain Quilt Block, showing each one of their "IDEAS" .....these are great videos too! ********************************************************* Also on Tuesday, Misty Doan has a video where she shows some of her talents too. I love watching all the videos from MSQC! I also enjoy what's called "Quilt Snips" too! It's MSQC's way of showing us how to make a Quilt Block the easiest way possible!!! There's 116 of these videos called "Quilt Snips"!! Here's the link : th-cam.com/play/PLkXp95fsrJhcAi5loSzMYpSPPtuc_Y3Qa.html Enjoy!
Hello from California, USA! Isn't Jenny just wonderful? It's just great how our love of quilting is shared by people from all over the world. This block pattern is one of the oldest in existence. This design was found carved into jars that were inside the pyramids of ancient Egypt there in your part of the world! It's just amazing to me that this pattern has been around so long. And here we are still loving it!
Mind blown!!! Using the back side of the material, when you need more light colors. Wow! Love that these tutorials stay available indefinitely. There is always new filters coming along, like me. So invaluable.
Jenny I accidently ran across your websight 6 years ago and have been quilting ever since. I started out with really inexpensive fabric and made a log cabin quilt and I was hooked. Thank you so much for being such a good teacher.
Soemtimes the back side of the fabric is just the right shade you need. I have done this for years. The right side of the fabric may be too bright etc. Audition the back side. I always thought this was a very cool idea to use. Love Log Cabin. Thank you.
Gosh, not only do I love Missouri Star Quilts but also the log cabin! I’ve been quilting probably longer than Jenny and I’m always greatly thankful when I’m brought back to the ‘simple’ quilts of my Grandma Knowles. Yes, I’ve made my share of complicated and ‘awe provoking’ quilts, but honestly, this is where my heart is. Jenny this video is very timely for me right now as it’s the perfect choice to make for a longtime family friend who is ill. I just learned about Eric yesterday from his daughter who is my hairdresser. He is 85 and Heidi was saying that he has very few people stop by and his wife has already passed. Hubby and I have decided to visit but taking a quilt along would be so much nicer! And I would be able to make this one fairly quickly for him. Not only that, but I literally just finished watching an old video of yours, disappearing nine patch.....as I knew it had a scalloped border. That is the border that I’m planning to put on the baby quilt I’m starting today for a granddaughter who is expecting her first child next month. Missouri Star Quilts and crew impact sooooo many quilters around the world and just wanted to let you all know your work and kindness is deeply appreciated. Hugs from Maine.
The simple classics are often the best, showing the heart behind the gift rather than showcasing the gift. Thank you for taking your time and your heart to help out someone who is ill and alone, making their day brighter. It's the kindest gift of all!
Somewhere in the mid 90's I did my first log cabin quilt. There was a way to flip the blocks and color placement to make a heart. I gave it to my then boyfriend and man I wish I had it back!
Hi Jenny! A quilting friend turned me on to your tutorials a year ago and I have learned some really neat tricks but the best thing I have learned from you is to stress less about perfection and just simply enjoy the quilting journey. You have really helped me enjoy sewing more! Thank you Jenny for all your tutorials and helpful hints. Mid-West gals rock!
Most people don't know this, but the log cabin block design has been found as decorations on the jars they put Egyptian mummies intrals in. So the pattern is over 4,000 years old! Anyway I found that out about 10 years ago as I was finding information to share about the block to tell my beginning quilting class. I just love kool quilting trivia. Jenny your quilt is beautiful as always! Thanks so much for sharing your love of fabric arts with us. Have a great day!
Oh Jenny, this is exactly what I was looking for, thank you SO MUCH! I think I’m going to try to be a bit fancy by making a tiny heart block for the centres, so I’ll need to decide my layout ahead of time to ensure all of my hearts are facing the correct way. I hope the recipient will like it!
Hi Jenny, just to say i big thank you, I am in the UK and i have been watching your videos and cant help but be inspired to make quilts. I started sewing and famously said “patchwork isn’t my thing.” How wrong can you be, I’ve practised and made 2 cat quilts and now just finished a lap quilt. I now want a quilt for watching tv to snuggle up in. You have been brilliant and just wanted you know that you’ve changed my world here in the uk. If i am only half as good as you then that makes me happy as you are a truly talented lady. Thank you again. 😊
I love you guys! I NEVER would have thought to use the back of the fabric! You all do such great presentations and it's so easy to follow. You make it look so easy and uncomplicated. I really appreciate this. Thanks so much.
The log cabin was my first quilt. I didn’t know how to sew didn’t know anything about a 1/4 inch seam or squaring up the block. So you can imagine the quilt and I was making it for my queen size bed. Took me 15 years to finish hand quilting it. By that time I had a king size bed so it on our bed in our camper.
Loved your tutorial. I am just learning how to do patchwork and quilting. I have sewn for many, many years, since I was 9 years old, but I never tried this until now.
I love your advice for making the log cabin quilt block, THE PIECE I FINISH IS THE PIECE I SEW TOO AND THE PIECE YOU SEWED LAST GOES TO THE TOP. I made my first log cabin quilt block and ran out of a few fabric pieces and replaced with the closest like fabric. I’m not to tech savvy but will have one of my children show me how to send you a picture. I am very pleased how it came out and I think you will like it too.
This the first quilt pattern I learned. An 83-year-old lady at church taught me, but we didn’t use precuts. I’ve made several others since. A favorite pattern for me.
Thank you Jenny. I usually make my log cabin quilts a little narrower, I’ve even done half of a 2 1/2” strip. It takes a little longer but I prefer the effect.
Great tutorial, as always. I haven't done a log cabin quilt yet, however, I'm really intrigued and want to do one... or more! Your thought process makes it so much easier. I have my own mantras I've developed in the short time I've been quilting, and it's great to know you as a seasoned quilter do this as well! I love the tip of "last piece sewn on is at the top of the block to add the next piece. ;-) Luci
I made a log cabin and really liked it. There are so many layout possibilities! Next time I think I would prefer to cut all the pieces at once though. I found the trimming to be a little bit tedious and broke my sewing rhythm. Hope to see this one in Block magazine and including the sizes of the block strips. It will definitely be on my list!
Ty for sharing ! Not everyone starting out can afford a ruler for every project ! Now I love your saying ! Your a make due gurl ! I’ll bet for years you made due for everything ! But your so pretty Jenny ! I’d love to meet you one day :-)
Thank you for this video. I am doing my first log cabin quilt except using a 10 “ inch center that is a flower panel cut up. So it’s a variation.I particularly liked how you sew the strips first and then cut them to size. Cat from Canada
I have always wanted to make a log cabin quilt so, here I go, after watching Jenny's instructions. "Holly Taylor invites you to Winter Manor" by Moda I wanted to make a bit larger quilt so I have used some cream and green fabric and some others that have leaves and berries. I am just on the last strip and the reds have stretched out a lot, also using up the other fabulous designs in the Jelly Roll This is an amazing jelly roll and if you enjoy nature this is a very good designer. I even have a few of Holly's fabric from another project that I have incorporated into the quilt. This has been such an encouraging project as due to lock-down I am sheltered and at HOME Thank you so much Jenny
Terrific to see this latest tutorial (must admit in trawling through all those pre-packed fabrics without enough light colours in them for what I needed, I never thought of using the 'flip-side'... Thanks Jenny as always for your tutorials and enthusiasm, even in these difficult times... Also so glad you recognise that sometimes bias binding is better than the straight version - I think it's less bulky, and - as one of my quilt-enthusiastic friends (not the most modest!) pointed out that bias binding not wearing out individual fibres would last the centuries better! :-)
I love the log cabin block.. I sure do miss seeing your videos.. hopefully life will get back to somewhat normal soon. Hope you're doing well Jenny.. 😊
You always provide us with some wonderful tips and techniques. For some reason, I always have problems piecing the log cabin pieces. But, this method is most helpful. Many thanks. The idea of using the wrong side of your fabric is unique, at least for me. Another great tutorial!!
I've loved your quilting show, and had no idea of the story behind it. I just watched your "two bolts . . .", how beautiful. My favorite quilt is the alzheimer memorial quilt. Thank you for sharing your story.
Hello Jenny, Love this quilt and I love the trick on turning your fabric over and using it for a lighter colors a trick I never knew. I love your videos ,Linda A
I love the log cabin quilt but Jenny the first time I tried making one I never realized they were not totally square. Following a pattern I saw in a magazine I tried to duplicate theirs. You should have seen the mess it ended up becoming !! I trimmed and trimmed and turned things around and when I laid it out it was in the shape of a Dresden plate tool !! I was so embarrassed and then it hit me what I did wrong !! Boy did I feel like the dumbest thing this side of Mars !! Well since that day I've turned out many a lot cabin quilt and I've never made that mistake again . Thank goodness !! Have a blessed day !
You know I just hate to break down and pay to learn to quilt ! I don’t mind to buy patterns or tools but man if I lived by you ! Lol or one day if I can ever have it ever extra with time ! I’d love to do your retreats ! You and your family are awesome !
So cute. I think the scrappy look made it more modern looking, or maybe it was the colors ... Anyway, I really liked this one. Thanks too for all the great tips. Especially on using the wrong side - great idea.
Thank you so much Jenny! You are an amazing teacher! You always make things fun and creative! I can just imagine how I can bust out my stash and make this quilt. Thank you so much again and have an amazing week!
Another awesome tutorial. Jenny, your weekly tutorial "ALMOST" makes it worth staying at home during this Pandemic!!! I have to say that since the order to stay at home has been placed, I honestly haven't been too upset about it. I have been a little OTT when going out....I take wet wipes and when placing anything in the shopping cart, I wipe it down with a wet wipe and wipe the product AGAIN when I use the SELF-CHECKING /U-Scan check-outs. The last thing I want to do is to get COVID-19 OR give it to someone!! (BTW...I'm shocked at the number of kids that parents seem to think it's okay for their children to go into stores without a mask....To me, that's dangerous, but then if people chose to do that, so be it, I guess!) Thanks so much for showing us a very simple easy quilt to do this week! God Bless all you Quilters & MSQC too!
I forget who it was that said "go ahead and use the other side of the fabric after all you paid for both sides" thinking it was Alex Anderson many years ago. Perfect border choice for this quilt.
I just watched another well known quilter use an expensive ruler to square up the blocks, and each block was made of pieces cut exactly to size. One of my first quilting teachers said "you own both sides of the fabric " thank you for using the "wrong side "
Soemtimes the back side of the fabric is just the right shade you need. I have done this for years. The right side of the fabric may be too bright etc. Audition the back side. I always thought this was a very cool idea to use. Love Log Cabin. Thank you.

I can see using red and yellow for the center squares then you have the heart and the light of the home in the quilt ❤️

I love that you shared the flip to the wrong side trick for changing the fabric from light to dark. I hadn't thought of that! Thank you.
I love the covered up blooper. When you had the long strip sewing the reverse side. But you caught it and continued with a cut strip. Clever save.
I love you guys! I NEVER would have thought to use the back of the fabric! You all do such great presentations and it's so easy to follow. You make it look so easy and uncomplicated. I really appreciate this. Thanks so much.

I like the method of string piecing and adding long strips of fabric, then cutting to size.

Made a few 20 30 years ago -gonna try again-got gg babies coming (2)!!!
I love making the old traditional quilts
Thank you Jenny. I am a beginner and I am going to try to do this. I truly love your tips along the way!
Thank you Jenny. I usually make my log cabin quilts a little narrower, I’ve even done half of a 2 1/2” strip. It takes a little longer but I prefer the effect.
Thank you, Ms. Jenny!! I love your tutorials!! I love the Log Cabin quilt block!!❤
My favorite Block!! Loved this tutorial - and explaining the meaning of the red and yellow centres.
Thank Jenny - great idea to flip the fabric and use the back happy quilting 🧵☕️
Thank you for your tip about the last strip goes on top made it all make sense. Love your teaching methods and delivery too. You make it fun.
You’re a great teacher, Jenny….Log Cabin is still one of my favorite blocks…
Ahh I've been wanting to try a Log Cabin for ages. Now I think i will! Love how your iron just 'pops up' after use. That's so clever.
Great tutorial, as always. I haven't done a log cabin quilt yet, however, I'm really intrigued and want to do one... or more! Your thought process makes it so much easier. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For this BASIC log cabin tutorial. I am a relatively new quilter with a passion for all things authenticity vintage.
I made a log cabin and really liked it. There are so many layout possibilities! Next time I think I would prefer to cut all the pieces at once though. I just love your backing fabric
I have always wanted to make a log cabin quilt so, here I go, after watching Jenny's instructions. Got a few new tips about the log cabin makeup! I am going to look into the "wave" border template. Thanks Jenny for the lesson!
This is great, because I'm already planning for my next quilt to be a log cabin. Thanks for the tips, Jenny!
I’m making a log cabin too, Zona! Yay!
I wish you lived closer to me-would love to take your classes. You explain everything so well and allow us to follow so easily. Thanks. Cute block.
Always love the log cabin! Thanks for the scalloped boarder!
Terrific to see this latest tutorial (must admit in trawling through all those pre-packed fabrics without enough light colours in them for what I needed, I never thought of using the 'flip-side'... Thanks Jenny as always for your tutorials and enthusiasm, even in these difficult times... I love the log cabin block.. I sure do miss seeing your videos.. hopefully life will get back to somewhat normal soon. Hope you're doing well Jenny.. 😊
Thanks Jenny! I really like the scallop border.
I have a weird obsession with your pop up iron. LOL. I make sure it pops back up every time you iron a seam and walk away.
What kind of iron is that!
I'd love to know what kind of iron it is, too!
Great ideas. I’ve always wanted to make a log cabin quilt, but never have. I may just have to. Tfs. God bless. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
You always provide us with some wonderful tips and techniques. For some reason, I always have problems piecing the log cabin pieces. But, this method is most helpful. Many thanks. The idea of using the wrong side of your fabric is unique, at least for me. Another great tutorial!!
Sharon Mills Wisneski you pay for both sides
Jenny you're the best just love your tutorials👌
I was taught that the red centre was to represent the “hearth” of the cabin. It is supposed to be like the fire in the hearth.
Thank you for this lovely square I finally done need to do four more for my college course. ❤❤❤❤
Log cabin is my fav block
And it's a lesson you'll carry with your throughout your quilting, Retha! Thanks for sharing!
My favorite block of all times!
Thank you for this! I love the legend of log cabin quilts - it is definitely on my list.
Classic! Always beautiful.
so many different lay outs possible, love it
Thank you for making this a simple, easy-to-understand tutorial.
Beautiful quilt!
Never met a log cabin I didn’t love! Thanks Jenny!
Log cabin quilts are the best😊Thanks Jenny. Love the mix and match. So practical . Xx🇦🇺🇦🇺
That border makes the quilt! Great idea.
Loved the video. Learned a lot. Thank you
I love log cabin blocks. Thank you for this tutorial
Use the wrong side!!!! Genius!!!!!! WOW!
Thank you so much Jenny! You are an amazing teacher! You always make things fun and creative! I can just imagine how I can bust out my stash and make this quilt. Thank you so much again and have an amazing week!
I like old-fashioned quilts, very.😊
Thanks a lot! I start my day with a tutorial of yours and I’ve been doing that for a few years now; I am addicted! 🌸🌸
Thank you for this tutorial. You explain the process very clearly. I watch many of your videos!
Love your log cabins. Sad to see your rings are gone.

Thanks so much for showing us a very simple easy quilt to do this week!
God Bless all you Quilters & MSQC too!
You make it look so easy. I wish I had all those neat gadgets. I love to sew. I'm goinh to try to make this kind of quilt. Thank you!

Great tutorial Jenny... I love log cabin quilts!!! Love the border and using the fabric backs!
Great video! I have been searching for a tutorial for this that is easy to understand and is just for making one square at a time! Thanks
I forget who it was that said "go ahead and use the other side of the fabric after all you paid for both sides" thinking it was Alex Anderson many years ago. Perfect border choice for this quilt.
