I'm 83 and have TONS of scraps. But I make any size little blankets and donate them to my local animal shelters, I can't take my fabric stash with me so I'm making random style quilts. Besides the animals don't complain. Besides now they have something that belongs to them. Use towels as batting. They will love you for it.
I was just thinking of trying to use towels as batting on my small quilts. I have the same issue, lots of fabric I inherited from my mom. She decided she's going to retire from sewing and gave me all her sewing machines, notions, scraps and fabric. I've been sewing 4 years now and have not made a dent lol.
You saved me from insanity! I have been a quilter for 30yrs. You can imagine how many buckets of scraps I have collected. I saved them to make a scrappy quilt someday, but until now I didn’t know where to begin. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I look forward to the next project ❤
I've been quilting for over 20 years and I don't even have half a bucket of scraps, much less enough 2.5" strips. (I don't buy pre-cuts.) but I like this so well, I am considering cutting one strip off of each of my yardage pieces just to have enough. Thanks for the idea.
I really enjoyed your video and way of teaching. I am new to quilting. The donated fabric scraps I was given I quilt together into totes and purses. I take half the money I receive and buy broad cloth solid colors with to to make the backing for scrappy quilts. I then give those quilts to the homeless shelter nearby. I live in Mississippi, and between the hurricanes and tornados, many people of all walks of life find themselves in a shelter. The workers see my truck and cone out eagerly to help me unload. It is contagious to give to others. I'll try your scrappy quilt suggestion. I subscribed so I can learn more from you.
I am one of those people who has trouble sewing random strips or squares together. You are so right that it takes a lot of time to not be random!! I am tryin this technique with my strips! Thanks for making it look easy to randomly come up with something lovely if you keep the color palette small. Can't wait to see more of your ideas!
I, too, am new to your channel! These random scrappy projects are so liberating some how! Not to mention, all I’ve got time and brain space for at the moment! Thank you for the tutorial!
I've been quilting about 20+ years, and I would say that I really don't like scraps. So I have just been throwing scraps in bins. Finally, I decided I needed to clean up. I've been cutting 5in and 2.5 in strips and squares since March. I figured I had about 4 bins, and then it looked like 8 bins like yours. Now I think am Almost coming to the end at about twice that, I have a few more bins to go. I am never going to let my scraps get so far away from me. Thank you for the inspiration for using up all those scraps! I😊
It's a good thing I like scrappy quilts, this one is a great idea. I am using my cotton scraps from years of sewing to make 6x6 blocks of different scrap block ideas. When I get enough, they'll become a quilt.
I really need ideas to use up my scraps. Thank you for doing this series. Mindless sewing is my preferred quilting these days. This is right up my alley.
Fantastic!!! I make scrappy quilts for charity, Foster kids. Each month I choice a different theme. August is 2 1/2" strips. You have given me some good ideas. I look forward to more videos. 👍👍👍
I sure enjoyed your scrap busting project. I have more 2 1/2" strips than I thought and this is be perfect for me to use for Project Linus charity quilts. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to more!
Wow. That looks great. Your technique would make a great border. Also, getting out of your comfort zone is a great idea. I am referring to the paper bag method. The whole idea of quilting comes from using leftovers. Thank you for sharing.
Than you so much. This project finally inspired me to dive into my stash and just get quilting again! I went with fall colors: orange, gold, brown, tan, beige, and maroon. It went together beautifully, I'm so very pleased. Looking forward to the next videos and more scrap inspiration.
Thanks for this. I'm a beginner and was put off with all the tiny pieces that had to be cut and sewn, now this is great. Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou 😊
@cindymckenna9910 Great idea! I'm an Artist (painter) that also quilts. This is a fabulous idea. Hmmm, my brain just went into overdrive: paint and fabric combined on a canvas!!?!! Thank you for the inspiration! ❤
I too prefer "planned scrappy" quilts. I love the blues and greens that you used in this quilt. I might do a similar project sewing 4 or more strips together allowing me to cut larger squares so I have fewer seams. I look forward to your next tutorial.
This is excellent! I’m in the process of organizing all my scraps and by the end I think I’ll have enough scraps for 100 quilts!! Omg it’s ridiculous. This makes it seem doable to make a bunch
Love how the colors look beautiful together ❤️ the little scraps make GREAT pillow stuffing. I just made 2 pillows and added some essence oils that will offer a nice aroma in the room Thanks for sharing 👍
Yes. A somewhat planned color scheme looks more purposeful/cohesive. However, I also Love total scrappiness with white, or very dark sashing/background. The possibilities are endless ❤
I enjoyed your scrappy 2 1/2 inch quilt sew very much!! very inspirational and gives me ideas what I can do with a bunch of 2 1/2 inch pieces I have. Thank you very much❤
First time I have come across your channel. Loved the simplicity of your directions and the unique creation using various fabrics left over from other projects. Nicely done. Looking forward to more of your pieces.
It came out so pretty. I just love it.... I am awestruck at how many strips you have. That is a crazy amount. It didn't seem like you had enough to make a quilt. I am just amazed at people who can make scrappy quilts. They turn out so beautiful, I am too obsessive to make them personally. I wish I could do that.
For color palettes, I love blues, grays, and turquoise, with orange for pop. Or red and pink is always lively. Red, pink and orange for some real pizazz
Wonderful idea! Can't wait to see the next one too! One idea you could try is an autumn-themed quilt. This is the time to make one, well before the days get cool. I also love blue & yellow quilts, & jewel tones.
Brilliant video! Thank you Shelly, I needed to be inspired to use up my 2.5 strips making charity quilts. Looking forward to the next in the series. I follow your monthly UFO challenge and monthly basket quilt blocks. Keep up the good work.
The quilt group I belong to decided to use jellyrolls that were donated to us to make quilts for charity. Your quilt reminded me of that project. We took the strips as they came off the roll and sewed them all together end to end. Then we cut the strip in half, sewed 2 strips together, cut them in half, sewed them together until we had a piece that was four strips wide. It measured 8 1/2 ". Next step was to cut that strip into 8 1/2" pieces and sew them together alternating the squares to form a pattern 6 squares wide by 7 squares long. Loved watching your video. Thanks. Looking forward to the next one.
So glad that I have found you. Such a great tutorial and I love your to the point teaching method. I have subscribed and look forward to watching more and getting some great ideas. Thank you.
I am excited about this series I appreciate you talking during the video so many people don’t talk just play music By talking you bring so much more to your videos Thanks

I think a scrappy quilt using shades of autumn leaves would be beautiful.

Have lots of scraps, this quilt using these strips is just what I needed, thank you.
Great video. So clear. Color suggestion: what I call 'juicy' - orange, yellow, green, and I throw in some raspberry for the punch of color.
I, too, am new to your channel! These random scrappy projects are so liberating some how! Not to mention, all I’ve got time and brain space for at the moment! Thank you for the tutorial!

Thanks for this. I'm a beginner and was put off with all the tiny pieces that had to be cut and sewn, now this is great. Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou 😊
Wonderful!
Love the final products!! We call the last bits "crumbs". Crumbs are great for stuffing dog beds. Thank you for sharing.
An idea I have for the crumbs is to use mod podge and glue the crumbs onto a painting canvas to make an abstract art piece.
@cindymckenna9910 Great idea! I'm an Artist (painter) that also quilts. This is a fabulous idea. Hmmm, my brain just went into overdrive: paint and fabric combined on a canvas!!?!! Thank you for the inspiration! ❤
I love scrap quilts. I made a pouf and stuffed it with my little scraps that wouldn’t be used for anything else. It is heavy and pretty stable.
I love that you used every bit of fabric! Beautiful!
Love the simplicity of video. With this instruction I will make a fall theme as I have a lot of scraps with fall colors. TY

Great video. I feel inspired to get to work.
I love the tool you used for cutting the chained pieces apart. Love the finished pieces.
What was the cutting tool called?
It's called Blade Saver. Put a used rotary blade inside.
This was a great way to teach us...thanks
Wonderful inspiration. Choosing the right colorways is a great way to get started. Looks much nicer than just sewing miscellaneous strips together.
Yes. A somewhat planned color scheme looks more purposeful/cohesive. However, I also Love total scrappiness with white, or very dark sashing/background. The possibilities are endless ❤

I have a huge amount of 2.5 inch strips so I’m excited to see what you come up with.
That turned out so beautiful! Puts me in mind of a lily pond with all the shades of blue & green, and bits of lighter colors here and there.
I love to watch you make these scrap quilts. And you are so pleasant to listen to.
What a great idea. I don't have as many 2 1/2 inch strips as you but I could certainly adapt this to make a quilt; thank you 🙂
Just found your TH-cam channel. Love scrappy quilts and have plenty of scraps to use. 😊
This quilt turned out beautifully! I’ve been looking for an easy project to do with my sisters and nieces. This is it!
