I recently saw Misty make a quilt like this on the Missouri Star Channel - part of a triple play - and I had never seen anything like it! I was so inspired that I thought I'd give it a try, resizing as needed to suit my materials. Tune in to see how it turned out.

I think the more "balanced" blocks are needed to help the more extreme blocks pop. If they were all the same either extreme or balanced would be boring to the eye. Thanks for the tutorial and the lessons learned along the journey.

You don’t have to take the first block all apart, just half apart and cut down the white strip! Just sew you know, 🤣🤣 I would have made the same mistake as you did.

Thanks for your video of experiences and learnings with this type of quilt pattern, Michelle. I really enjoy your videos. You're obviously quite experienced and whip smart (i. e. the Mathemagical quilt). As others have mentioned Donna Jordan has two similar videos, 'Layer Chop' and 'Mosaic', where she uses 1" strips which keep the block dimensions 10". She also marks the fabric before adding the strips so the blocks stay aligned and at a 10" square. I plan to give the Mosaic pattern a try, but add sashing between the blocks like you did, to make it look more like a stained glass window.

Hi Michelle! As another commenter said, Donna Jordan also has a similar free pattern called Layer Chops. She uses 1" strips with a layer cake. I made it, and I was having trouble getting my pieces to line up, so I eventually cut all the blocks to 9-1/4", as Donna suggested, and it worked out. I did find it a bit frustrating though. Your baby quilt turned out very cute.

I love this quilt block. It’s been on my ‘to-do’ list for a while. I never think of baby quilts, but they are the perfect size to try ALL kinds of new patterns. I see a couple of comments here, about Donna Jordan’s tut on this block, hers is called “Layer Chops” and she does have a great way of making the ‘sticks’ line up too. As always, you do great videos, and you explain all the why’s of each process. Thanks!! xoxo e. N. B. 🇨🇦

I’ve made a quilt like this & way harder than you think. Harder if you’re really trying not to lose any real-estate. In my humble opinion, true improv goes against the nature of those that want to use our fabric to the utmost. One has to embrace improv for its creativity and not try to fit it into the frugal box. Take one project & let yourself go with the flow & see if you like it. You always encourage us to try techniques outside our comfort zone & help us discover new quilting passions. Test blocks have been a great blessing to me. I love the wonky stars Jenny made in the video. I have attempted and failed several times now. I ended up making “pixie stick” blocks from the failed star pieces. I’m happy with the way they turned out. I love hearing you reasoning things out. It makes me wonder things of my own and that’s fun. The quilt is fabulous.

I tried this pattern, after I read the directions carefully a second time, and shortened it. It made a nice baby size quilt. I removed Section 3. I always like a challenge of a new thing during the winter and this was my challenge for this year. I did my quilt in greens; lime green was the sashing pieces and used scraps I had. I do want to say “read the directions carefully, then read them again.” I had to contact Michele because I thought the pattern was off; but it was me who was “off”. Her response was very kind and I really enjoyed making the quilt.

Needed a last minute baby quilt and this pattern was perfect. I used 4 fat quarters and white yardage from my stash. I strip pieced the six inch background strips with strips from a (5th) solid fat quarter for the diamonds. The setting triangles are the perfect size.
