      Yeah, that is true. David Schwarz, the guy whose art Instagram I recommend at the end of this video, told me he likes this movie because it "isn't embarrassed to be a Batman movie," which makes a lot of sense. I think it's cool that so many people got what they wanted in that regard, and I've definitely come around to appreciating it.

    The strangest thing to me this movie does is locking up the main villain before the final act (without introducing another villain). It's like Matt Reeves wanted to make sure that there would be no suspense on whether Batman will win or lose because it's impossible that Batman would lose to random nameless thugs. I don't know any other movie that would do such stupid thing.

      @@BabyArms I really enjoyed Paul Dano’s performance the first time but it gets worse everytime I watch it. I can see why you hate the yelling scene too, such an odd choice lmao. I also agree that I’m unsure about Pattinsons Bruce Wayne, like what you said here I recognize it’s on purpose but it’s an odd decision. On early watches, new good batman stuff was enough but with time I can’t believe they couldn’t work in compelling Bruce Wayne stuff with the run time. I loved your analysis, the only thing we really disagreed with was I’ve always loved Colin Ferrell’s riddler.
      At the time I just wanted what the movie gave me, with hindsight I think some of it could’ve been cut for better things that these writers are capable of doing.

    • @BabyArms
      @BabyArms  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BananaHammocks Well thank you very much! What Dano did should work on paper, but for me it's just how he delivered that scene that's unbelievable (in a bad way). He really is a good actor in other stuff. As for Bruce, I guess we're probably on the same page in thinking that his character arc in this movie could have been a lot more compelling without really losing anything it already has going for it. I probably will check out the sequel regardless. Curious about how Pattinson's going to play him in that. I don't think it'd make sense to turn in exactly the same sort of performance, so which way will they take it?

    That scene in which you say Pattinson’s Bruce lacks some more emotion, is exactly why it is my favorite scene in the movie. He is extremely hesitant to show emotion. It feels uncomfortable and unnatural for him to show emotion, and you as an audience feel uncomfortable watching it too. Maybe it didn’t come across well enough for you, but it did for me. His forced expression shows his resistance for opening up, clenching his jaw tight. Also the Batman is my personal favorite movie because it tonally is the closest to how i envision Batman and his world that has been done in live action.

    Pattinsons Performance was all around excellent. So was Farrells (including his dialoge... but I´m not a native english speaker). But Pinguins and Batmans first interaction is not writen good. There is a severe lack of intellect present. Batman already showed that he is a physical threat by storming the club. Against Pinguin, he needed more delicacy. Batmans interogation attempts throughout the movie are NOT matching his intelligence shown elsewhere in the movie. It could be a sign for his overreliance on physical means. But him asking Catwomen if she killed the major showed a MASSIVE disconnect between storyline, Batmans discoveries and his analytical abilities. Just a cheap demonstration by the director, to show Batman is mistrusting everyone.
    (21:45) is one of the reasons, the Arkham-Riddler Scene was unauthentic to me. BOTH the Riddler and Batman wear a mask for self realisation and obfuscation at the same time, while the blank faces are only meant to obfuscate (in case of the Riddler it may have been a means for survival during his time in the orphanage). This theme of the masquerade is completely distorted by the way this interaction took place. Besides that, it was completely overacted and was clearly intended to make both characters look like pathetic helpless men. So a very bad scene, especially for a final confrontation.
    The movie had a few chunks of bad dialoge and the story had some cheap unbelievable aspects to it, yes. The screenwork however was almost perfect. It doesn´t only matter how "emotion-inducing" a scene is shot, when it still supports the (in-)action or flow of inherent causality (symbolic or real).
    Yes, the Riddler in this movie seems to be interchangeable with other villains of the franchise. But only those depicted in an existencial crisis. Maybe that is the common denominator. But the way the Riddler takes action during that crisis might be more relevant (to distinguish him from others). "Left" or "right" is irrelevant here. He is a extremist and a fringe element of society.
    (28:57) That is the rational of a SANE person and at the same time the very reason, why the Riddler can be called a psychopath. So there is no contradiction.
    The most ridiculous and unbelievable character in the movie is candidate Bella Real. She is an idealised political insert. Purely symbolic.
    Yeah, Turturro steals the show in almost every scene he is in. It was surprising and pleasing to see, that he is shown as a psychopath also.
    The "white priveleged a*****es" -line doesn´t makes sense at all, if the viewer has at least an ounce of grounded human experience. It clearly shows Selinas (founded but immoral) shortsighted bias.
    The Soundtrack is overwhelmingly good.
    By the way: I usually avoid Comicbook Adaptations and (Super)Heromovies like the Plague, but this Movie stood out for me. Had to watch it.

    Came back around to this video after finally watching The Batman. I’m kind of mixed on the scenery. Most of the time the city settings feel fake I.e green screened but all the interior shots look incredible with lots of little details. Batman’s suit and fight scenes were all excellent and it was clear to me they took inspiration from the Arkham games. The majority of the casting felt just right but I generally disliked Pattinson’s and Dano’s performances for their respective roles. Pattinson straight up feels like he’s not even trying or even wants to be there until about halfway through the film (which I think is the better half). Even when he does start showing some range and depth, Pattinson just feels like a whiney emo boy who by the end of the film is pretty much in the same place he started. Dano’s actual screentime is too short so I never feel connected to him as a villain but the whole time he was on screen I was wishing I was watching the Jim Carey version of Riddler. Worst of all in my personal opinion, the film actively wastes your time on the overly drawn out investigation scenes. There was one scene in particular where Batman is in The Riddler’s apartment and finds the cage with the bat with the envelope stuck to the roof. Batman very slowly and tentatively reaches his hand in and the whole time I’m screaming “just get on with it!” Every Riddler card felt like that and there were at least 4 of those scenes like that. Anyway good film analysis as always. Looking forward to more stuff!

    It's okay but it's nothing but treading on old waters by previous Batman films.
    A triangle between Batman, Catwoman and Penguin ? Batman Returns
    The villain being after every rich crook in Gotham who wronged them in the past ? Mask of The Phantasm
    An early years/Year One-ish origin story ? Batman Begins
    There are isolated things I like about it like it being a more procedural crime story with actual investigation, the more down-and-dirty feel of an inexperienced Batman, the Riddler being such a 'tistic stereotype. But then we have too much raceswap (I'm fine with Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, but I really don't care for Zoe Kravitz as Selina), the tedious runtime, some really on the nose pandering like her rant about "rich white males" and the mayor candidate being an AOC stand-in, and I'm getting tired of the Penguin being portrayed as a generic mobster ever since the Arkham games. If they could somehow double down on the good stuff, introduce Mr Freeze or Hush or the Court of Owls, or come up with a good version of Robin (of which there were some talks), fine. But Matt Reeves REALLY needs to shake things up for the next one.....

    The Batman was just a really boring movie. It chose style over substance. The relationship Bruce had with Alfred was very surface level and shallow, so when Alfred got blown up I had no sense of empathy for him. And then Bruce comes to tell Alfred that he lied to him about his Dad, only for Alfred to reveal that wasn't the case and that it was all a misunderstanding. The action was very stale and lacked any sort of proper choreography it just felt like street fight. Batman had no sense of form in his fighting style, no signs of muay Thai, karate, Kung fu, any martial arts whatsoever. Which made him feel sloppy and like he only won his fights out of brute force instead of tactically. As for the Riddler, they strayed too far away from his source material. They focused on making him creepy instead of making him actually intelligent and cunning. They should've made him more like the Arkham games, where his whole goal wasn't to flood the city, but just best Batman and prove that he was smarter than him. I'm so sick of every superhero movie putting the entire city in danger. Go for something more personal, have the Riddler threaten Alfred or someone he cares about if Batman doesn't prove he's smart enough. Stop putting the city in jeopardy, in fact the more personal the conflict the better the execution will be. Overall, The Batman felt like it was trying to be this dark gritty grounded Batman, that we already got with Christian Bale. It captured the tone, without actually understanding the reason for said tone. It tried to be really deep and serious, but just came across as empty and hollow. And the most disappointing aspect of The Batman, is at its core it had no heart.

    • @BabyArms
      @BabyArms  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "It captured the tone without actually understanding the reason for said tone." I wish I'd said that myself. Yeah, the only way I was able to enjoy the movie was to accept it for what it was and just appreciate the aesthetic qualities, mostly the cinematography and music. But it's definitely not a movie I enjoy in the way I most want to enjoy movies; it was a huge letdown in that regard. It's funny that you specifically said that the movie has no heart, because the naming scheme I'm going with for these big movie analyses is "The Heart of ____." I was originally going to use that for this video too, but it just didn't feel right to me, and I think you've pretty much expressed why.

      @@BabyArmsBelieve me the cinematography is incredible and the music is great. But I came to watch Batman, not the superhero, Batman the man. He's more than just a guy who beats up bad guys, Joker literally says this in the Return Of the Joker movie, "Underneath all the stern and batarangs is just a little boy in a play suit crying for mommy and daddy." That's what I came to see, a man who still feels like a child, Like he lost something near and dear to him and wants to make others pay for his pain. I wanted the inner conflict that the character of Batman actually struggles with, should I kill? Or should I show mercy? I haven't read a single Batman comic book, but I don't need to, because I already understand the character of Batman. It's not complicated and it's not that deep. It's literally about a boy who lost his parents and he uses that trauma to hurt bad guys. Maybe it's a coping mechanism, maybe it's true justice. Overall, I wish this movie explored that, as that would've truly made this movie stand out more than the other Batman films. Diving deep into his thoughts, inner conflict and learning a valuable lesson at the end. Not a lesson he verbally has to tell us, but one we can figure out for ourselves. We don't need the movie to hold our hand, we can form our own opinions by just watching. Show don't tell.

      @@BabyArms Batman is Bruce Wayne's idea of changing Gotham for the better. All these years, he has been conducting a criminological experiment in an attempt to change Gotham. At the very beginning of the film, we understand that his methods do not work. After all, crime is not going away. He no longer knows what to do and then the Riddler appears.
      A Batman-inspired personality who also longs for change in Gotham. And he thinks that he and Batman work for one. After all, the Riddler knows the only way to make a difference is to take drastic measures. So he decides that, let the day of judgment come! Day of Punishment.
      Everyone. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor. After all, this can be called real justice, when everyone is equal? In the end, he aims to destroy the hope and faith that the people of Gotham have for their future, just as he once, as an orphan, hoped that something could change.
      As a result, Batman, in spite of the Riddler, becomes a hope for people, which completely destroys his whole plan.
      At the end of the film, Batman realizes that he still influenced something, but not what he expected. He understands that he needs to become something more. That the only way to change is to get scars that will stay with us forever and thereby make us stronger as a human species. Throughout the film, Batman faces revelations that break him as a person. But in the end, the scars he got and the ones Gotham got are the only way to get better, or rather change. The whole film is a detective investigation, but not who the killer is, but rather how to change a rotten place like Gotham. And at the end of his experiment, Batman solves this riddle for himself. So I think this is an amazing, revolutionary film for the noir detective genre.

      @@BabyArms the real family's legacy wasn't venguence. Wayne's family's legacy is to help people as Thomas Wayne said, because it's a passion. That’s what does Batman in the end. Helping regular people for once, not scaring everything alive in existence, but giving them some support.

      @@dis_inferno9173 I appreciate you caring enough to type all that out and engage earnestly instead of just flinging insults, but I'm not sure what it is that you think I don't understand. I covered the fact that the movie is telling us that Bruce's methods aren't working and that he has to become something more for Gotham. He eventually undergoes a radical change in his approach, and his falling into the water in an act of heroism and then coming out as a literal beacon of hope is symbolic. At the end he has a new, more effective way to carry on his family's legacy, which is what he's presumably going to be doing from now on. I touch upon him acknowledging that the effect he's had isn't the one he intended. I went through and covered most of the points in your explanation. Because this video was intended for people who've already watched the movie, I didn't feel the need to spend the bulk of the time describing what happens in the story and what it's supposed to mean and was instead focused on critiquing its execution. It's very common to understand something and still have criticisms about it.
      re: the Riddler's motivation, your explanation makes sense, and I'm glad to have your perspective, but to my mind it slots into the "Riddler is just bad" explanation. Which is fine; not every villain needs to have extremely complex motivations that are challenging to dispute. It just doesn't do a whole lot more for me than any other given villain. I guess I do like the fact that he's starting to have a negative influence on Catwoman the way Batman had a negative influence on him and that Batman pulls her back from that abyss, but I still have a problem with the way the message is pushed. Batman saved that man at the beginning, and Selina was trying to defend herself from a man who was in that moment intent on ending her life, had no issues murdering others, and who would very likely soon be free to continue doing it whenever he saw fit. The moral of the movie feels undercooked and even pushy to me, slipped into situations in which I don't think it's fairly applied. Again, I get it, but I take issue with how it was handled.
      re: the real mystery/riddle was how to fix a rotten place like Gotham, that's the overall theme of the movie, and I can understand wanting to express it in lofty terms like "It was the true mystery" and "Bruce finally solved the riddle," but I don't think there's as much actual substance to that as people want there to be. The revelation that "broke him as a person" was a misunderstanding. He's all right after and only after Alfred tells him that Falcone straight up lied about what happened, and that's a shortcut past having to actually deal with something that challenges the fundamentals of your morals and who you are. Finding out that the thing you think is a problem isn't actually nearly as big of a problem isn't the same thing as having to find the spark of goodness in your own philosophy, painfully extract it from a corrupted base, and carry on with it, uncertainly at first, by transplanting it into some new, probably unfamiliar course of action. It felt like a cop out, and it also felt bizarrely inserted into the story for just one brief section instead of being organically woven throughout. As for the actual, literal, non-metaphorical detective work bits, they also felt borderline automated. Most of the big a-has in this movie just didn't feel earned to me.
      It seems like we're on the same page about almost everything in terms of what it was meant to mean and only disagree on how effectively it was done, and that's fine. I'm not trying to make anyone like the movie less, and I'm glad that you liked it and that it gave you things to think about. It gave me plenty to think about too, and I've come around to enjoying the movie.
