  • The Batman is the newest iteration of the Batman and was directed Matt Reeves. Robert Pattinson is the newest actor to play the character, along with Paul Dano as the Riddler and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. A lot has changed for the DC brand in the past year. After almost a decade of divisive storytelling, most conclude that Matt Reeve's The Batman is fantastic. Why is this the case? What makes The Batman so great compared to other DC movies? In this video essay, I discuss The Batman 1 Year Later.

    #TheBatman #DC #videoessay
    2022s The Batman is the newest iteration of the caped crusader and features Robert Pattinson behind the mask. We have gotten many iterations of the batman. Some are borderline universally beloved, some universally hated, and some with mixed but strong opinions. As someone who is familiar with Batman but not a die hard fan, I didn’t know what to expect from The Batman. Matt Reeves is one of my favorite working directors, the planet of the apes trilogy is one of the most underrated trilogies ever made, so I was optimistic. I remember talking to big batman fans after this movie and they told me so many things they loved about this movie. They loved that this was the most detective batman we’ve ever gotten on the big screen. They loved the tone of Gotham and how it’s presented. They loved that this batman was maybe more brutal than any other batmans we’ve seen. And yes they loved that Batman wasn’t killing people anymore. I couldn’t disagree with them because, again, I’m not the most familiar with the batman lore. But what I am familiar with are movies and stories. So while this may or may not be a great adaptation of the batman character, it doesn’t change the fact that this movie was phenomenal. There are plenty of aspects of this movie that make it great, but today I want to focus on the character work. I haven’t seen every Batman story that exists, but what I can say is that of every Batman story I have seen, this movie has done the best job at building characters. So in this video, I want to dive deep into what I would argue are the 3 most important characters in the movie and what makes each of their stories so compelling. So with that being said, hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re gonna talk about the characters of Matt Reeves’ the batman.
    Of course we must begin this The Batman video essay by talking about the batman and his character arc. We’ve seen many different types of arcs for batman. Sometimes it’s about him undergoing some change. Sometimes it’s about Gotham undergoing a change and how Batman will react. The Batman presents a story where Bruce Wayne goes on a typical character arc. He begins the story one way and by the end he is a changed man who has learned a valuable lesson. So even though the kind of arc he goes on is fairly generic, Matt Reeves perfected Batman’s story and gave him one of my favorite character arcs in 2022. So let’s dive deep into the character arc of Batman and what makes it so effective. In a character arc like Batman’s in this movie, there are 4 important narrative elements that must exist. The first is the character’s Want. What does that character want to happen in the story? Usually this is an external goal that is related to the plot. Bruce wants to protect Gotham City and its people. He goes around town and terrorizes criminals who dare bring harm to Gotham.

The Batman got me more interested in Batman as a character and superhero than I ever have been. YES! “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that” and this movie has that arc for Batman. I choked up when he reached out his hand and the first person to grab it was the little boy. Matt Reeves is brilliant.

    • @zachwalton3544
      @zachwalton3544 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Right I feel like that was so symbolic. When we someone experiences trauma and is left with PTSD they can sometimes remain the age they are mentally when the trauma occurred or split off and become an entirely new person.
      The little boy trapped in the heap of metal could symbolize Bruce (him as a child when he experienced the trauma) and Batman takes inner Bruce by the hand to lead him to the light. Now the two personalities are simpatico.. so to speak. Idk my interpretation I suppose.

    • @johndiaz9190
      @johndiaz9190 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@zachwalton3544 That’s exactly how I interpreted it as well. The mayor symbolized the city and its citizens behind her, but the little boy, the victim of a violent city like Bruce reaches out first. It’s Bruce saving himself first. And then the city follows him through the valley of the shadow of death.
      Its my favorite scene in the film easily.

    To get an even better look into Edward/The Riddlers mind and motives you need to read Riddler: Year 1. It's a six issue comic based on him a year before the events of The Batman and basically explores what Edward goes through to get to that point in his life. There is currently 3 issues out and they're incredibly well written and the art suits the tone of the character so well. It's also written by Paul Dano, the actor who played The Riddler. You come to find he's not as uncaring as you assume but he's really just incredibly mentally ill and doesn't know where to channel all his negative emotions. Obviously only 3 issues are out so he's due to get more character development in the next 3 but yeah. Very good read, I certainly recommend it.

    Nice work. Good points, good commentary. Some sharp applications of modern screenwriting philosophy around character wants, needs, etc. I also like how you tied in the themes from Last Jedi, and counterpointed the flaw of Infinity War. I hadn't put my finger on why Thanos feels like an empty character, but you caught it nicely. We don't see how he arrived at his plan. He explains it, and even provides visual aids, but this just isn't the same as showing. He never actually comes together as a character, because we never actually understand who or what he is. He's just a threat.
    I loved this film, but I definitely feel it could have stood to make more of Catwoman and Batman's connection. I felt like Catwoman ended up getting less development than she deserved. The film does a great job early on showing Batman's total lack of interest in her needs or feelings, but I felt like this sets up the need for Batman to get schooled a little more harshly over his callousness. Not just an off the cuff mention that he's probably rich. I feel like Catwoman is the perfect character to really lay it out for him that he's not the only one in the world who's known loss. Riddler can belittle Bruce Wayne's loss, but Catwoman could come from the other side, pointing out that Batman isn't alone in his suffering. The movie touches on that, but doesn't really dig into it. Annika's death should have changed everything for Catwoman, but we didn't get to see directly how badly it affected her. That whole plotline felt clumsy, missing opportunities to strengthen the movie's core themes in order to rush to the Batmobile sequence, which felt tacked on, no matter how cool it was.
    But hey, that's just one man's opinion. Still probably the best Batman movie to date. Which is a miracle in itself, considering it emerged not only from the turmoil of the studio, but also the pandemic.

    The Batman was an incredible movie, loved the amazing cinematography, story, Michael Giacchino’s soundtrack was perfect, the opening scene leading to the Batman reveal was absolute perfection. Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano stole the show as Batman and Riddler, excited for the sequel.

    I remember watching the video with my mother and as soon as we went out of the cinema, the first thing she said was: "This is the first Bruce Wayne that acts in a psychologically plausible way to the trauma he suffered."
    She is a psychotherapist, so I tend to believe her in that area.
    Great review, and great film.

    This is one of my all time favorite batman movies ever made! Everything from the tone, to how Gotham city almost becomes its own character is brilliant. All the performances are perfect! The music is also excellent. Also whoever did Colin Farrell's makeup to turn him into year two penguin deserves an Oscar cause he's unrecognizable!

    All ''THE BEST'' things this movie brought us:
    - The best ever Gotham in live action (not debetable)
    - The best ever Batman in live action (my opinion ofc)
    - The best ever Bruce Wayne character arc live action (also my opinion)
    - The most realistic Batman ever. (thats not debetable)
    - ONE of the best villains in superhero movies (opinion but quite not debetable)
    - By far the best ever Riddler (not like he had much opponents)

    Loved the idea of a Bruce Wayne being addicted to batman. To deal with trauma people often use an escape, and end up diving deeper into darkness. Bruce indulges in this escapism this to the point where Gotham suffers because he’s ignored his responsibilities as a Wayne. Really unique perspective on the character I’ve never seen before. Also the cinematography and set design is unmatched. Every single shot uses movement, perspective and focus in a unique way, not a single shot is wasted or taken for granted.

    From his dialogue to his detective work this was the most comic accurate on screen batman. The one thing that was off was how he didn’t play the rich playboy (and I loved that they took that out)

    • @spunkymaniac9312
      @spunkymaniac9312 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the movie had more potential. The trailer got me hyped for the movie, but there were definitely a lot of flaws; story plot holes, overuse of swearing, mediocre fight scenes and the second part of the movie didn’t really have a payoff. In comparison to the dark knight (not fair I know), it really isn’t the best Batman movie.

    I was worried about the movie when i heard Pattinson was going to play Bruce, but I have to say he really played a great Batman. His Bruce was too isolationist, but his Batman was great. You could tell that a lot of care and passion was put into the film.

      I love this movie so much. It’s my favorite Batman movie. But I still Love TDK trilogy - the two will forever be my favorites. I am actually looking forward to a Gunns Batman though and think we may finally get the Batman from the comics/animated movies. I also hope Jensen Ackles gets the part. I love a grounded Batman but im ready for the Batman that Green lantern thought was actually a meta-human. The Batman who can stand toe to toe against big bads along side the Justice league

    Although a minor character, Batman’s interactions with Penguin are my favorite.
