Really enjoyed this. Well done and thank you for putting it together. On the eyes motif, Spielberg played with a similar theme in his directorial debut, the pilot episode of Night Gallery in 1969. Joan Crawford plays a wealthy blind woman who pays a homeless man $9,000 in exchange for his eyes. I won’t spoil anything, but it ends with shattered glass not unlike the scene with Anderton and Crow.

Watched the movie two nights ago in anticipation of this video. What an excellent analysis! There are so many motifs I didn't pick up on, but once pointed out become impossible to ignore.
Here are a couple more motivic Easter eggs I don't think were mentioned explicitly: Sarah Marks's *red* hair, and Dr. *Iris*.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to put this together. It's a great reminder to pay more attention to the present and notice the textured layers present in good art.

    • @BabyArms
      @BabyArms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you! And thank you for pointing those out. I had considered Iris Hinneman's first name (plays into the nature theme) and just didn't mention it-wasn't sure where to fit it into the already long script without breaking up the flow of things-but I'm not sure I'd ever have put two and two together about Sarah Marks's hair color. Good observation. There's also Dr. Solomon Eddie's assistant, Greta van *Ey*ck. That one is almost painful, but it's certainly there. There's so much to the visual storytelling in Minority Report it's unreal. The one that really threw me for a loop when I noticed it was the panel over Anderton's face when he and Witwer are fighting in the car that's being assembled. That observation was a very last-minute addition to this video. Just staggering the precision and detail in just about every shot.

    This analysis is great.
I’m grateful to have found you here.
It’s made me want to watch the film again and analyse it.
    I’m a PKD fan , a dickhead , and I appreciate his gnosis .
There’s something lost in this film version, perhaps something that jars only me. (Bar the colouration, i know of a lot of people whom dislike it!)
I hope to capture some PKD in my writing.
now at the end of your video, I see new things not apparent to me the few times I’ve watched this movie, mostly through eyes distracted by the palette.
I also see that the film will forever hold a deep meaning for you and an eternal comfort.
Whatever the general consensus, art is often a subjective experience .
Doubly so when it speaks to you personally.
    Best wishes
    .

Hey, thanks for this! It's really cool to hear from someone who's big into the writings of Philip K. Dick. I was just talking to another commenter a day or two ago about how I'm not always the biggest fan of this movie's tone, and it is straight up a different story from the original short story, but as you said, there's a lot there beneath the surface that definitely warrants consideration. As popular and well-liked as the movie is, I think it's actually underappreciated even by most of its fans. It really is so rich and dense with meaning. I appreciate you taking the time to write this comment and am very, very glad you found and enjoyed the video. Out of all the movie analyses I've done so far, I think it's my best work. Feel free to come back and share anything you notice about the movie after you rewatch it! I'd be interested in your take.

Its been a hot minute, but this was truly a quite good movie. And as usual, your video is spectacular. I won't spoil too much of what you said so that people can experience it themselves, but especially your reference to living the moment instead of preserving the moment called me back to another recent video of yours. Still rang true.
I'd say too, your voice was is excellent for this sort of content, but also the way you USE your voice. Some people can be dry and boring ... You are VERY not that, inviting, warm, and engaging. I truly love your work. I'm going to have to give this movie a rewatch soon!
I'm thrilled this was finally released, I've been looking forward to it. It completely dunked on my expectations.

    • @BabyArms

Wait for it: Thank you so much man. I'm actually fairly monotone when I speak in day to day life. It's something I've worked on for these videos. I'm glad it's paid off. I wasn't sure. You never really know about yourself, I guess.
Yeah, "preserving versus experiencing" has definitely been on my mind, and I hope that didn't color my interpretation of that aspect of the movie in a way that made it inaccurate. I think it's a theme that's present with Anderton's home videos as well as Burgess with his Precrime program. It sharing that with my honeymoon video is a heck of a coincidence.
Also, no worries about spoilers for the video. I think that's to be expected in comment sections. Admirable of you to avoid spoiling the movie for people though!
Thank you again. I'm really happy to hear that it wasn't some incomprehensible mess and that you processed everything I threw out.
I usually don't ask this, but this took ages (7-8 weeks) to make. If you wouldn't mind sharing it on Facebook or wherever, that'd help me a ton.

As usual, you're in depth analysis of the tools used for symbolism and more is illuminating. This is one of my favorite Sci-fi films, and Spielberg one of my favorite directors, but I've never taken to looking at the deeper meanings of this film. I've always thought it was a thought provoking, well done action-thriller-sci-fi film, but it obviously goes even deeper than that (which should be expected, considering Spielberg's other work). Awesome analysis as always, but for some reason this movie baffles me through it's entire run-time by the sheer number of moments where basic logic simply vanishes. Things like how John's eye print wasn't removed from accessing the HQ, how Jhon managed to talk through the headpiece with perfect clarity, how Lamar was able to perform the drowning - like no other forces wondered where the victim is ? and so many others. The writers of this movie ... Anyways, awesome job and keep them coming!

      @user-yz7uu5xw7m 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@BabyArms I'm shocked but by doing a quick search there is very little information about Oedipus Rex and Minority Report. Just like Oedipus John kills his "father" (Lamar Burgess) and has incest with "mother" (of precrime) when she kisses him on the lips. Other moments in the movie where blind people see the truth are pretty obvious.
Another thing going in the movie is art. Cogs projecting their visions on the screen in a dark room is very similar to cinema theatre. And John Anderton montages their vision to get a meaningful picture (a movie) that he can show the audience (the officers? dont remember who exactly are they). So John is an editor and director.
Dr. Iris Hineman is listening to classic music while taking care of flowers ( also a form of art). Gideon plays organ for the prisoners. Cogs are reading literature after being released. Dr. Solomon P. Eddie is cured by literature in prison. Lara Anderton deals with her son loss better than John because of her photography art.
Unfortunately, I don't really like Se7en because all the detective work is just time wasted because the villain simply walks in and gives up. Also Brad Pitt acting is pretty bad, especially in the famous box scene (and I usually don't notice or care about bad acting in the movies so it's the only generally liked movie where I do not like acting). What do you think of Fincher's The Killer? For me it's the best movie of 2023 without a doubt

Analysing EyeWideShut would be a *MAJOR* major task for you @@BabyArms!
The following could be incorporated in an analysis of yours (should you ever chose to make it public)
      BUT . . . *SPOILER ALERT*
--- Don´t read the following until you watched the movie ---
There is a color-codified subtext in the movie (that is even hinted at during the course of the story).
IN MY OPINION , if we take the movie at face value, the codification is manifested threefold:
No 1: The Colours of the rainbow, contextualiszed (purposefully revealed) in certain scenes of the movie (actually througout the majority of the movie).
No 2: The Medium, dominance and (sometimes) the object, the colours are attached to.
No 3: This is a big maybe: The colours are also attributed objectively attributed to Christmas(-decoration) and have a inherent Christmas-related meaning outside of the movie (i.e. in Western Culture of Christmas).
---> I think ALL THREE dimensions are interconnected (i.e. part of Kubriks vision). Since all 3 seem to flow together and since I am not culturally educated enough (and couldn´t find anything online about No 3), I was never able/ willing to decode the chiffre.
Do you think No 3 is actually part of the code?
Since Kubrik wasn´t able to finalise the movie, how can we read the whole movie as an unmitigated piece of art?

It's inspiring to me when people dedicate their careers and lives to trying to prevent other people from going through the hardships they went through. Sincerely. I'm sorry about your brother, and I know he'd be proud of what you're doing. Thanks for your comment, and thank you very much for watching this video!

@@BabyArms after my brother’s death is when I saw minority report, and I love movies based on Philip K. dick’s work (except the total recall remake). But I wasn’t in my typical pay close attention to the meaning. And I got addicted to alcohol, and had “plans” but when I decided to not go through with them, it was just like an unknown future appeared. I still was trying to run away from my traumatic childhood for years, but now I choose to run towards things, no matter how uncertain things may be, after all, gotta keep running

Yeah, I figure it's just his style and what he likes. It doesn't really detract from a brilliant movie.

You performed brain surgery reviewing this movie by isolating and dissecting what I will presume to be most of the motifs that Steven Spielberg embedded! I will freely admit that my viewing of the movie only slightly skimmed the surface in that regard, but after just yesterday watching the movie, and then your review of it today…I realized a deeper appreciation of the depth of symbolism Spielberg aspired too, and while also enjoying your abilities as the narrator not least of which is your voice.

Thank ya thank ya. Brain surgery. I like that. The further into this particular pocket of Spielberg's brain you reach, the further you see that it extends.

I actually do have some sort of issue with having to clear my throat a ton that I haven't been able to figure out, but I think it's related to the air quality where I live (South Korea) and the presence of black mold in the building I lived in for several years, including when I made this video. It turns my throat into hamburger meat. The entire process of recording is really hard for me because I make a lot of mistakes and have to repeat myself a ton, always clearing my throat, and I have to drink a lot of water. That aside, though, that is fairly close to how my voice just normally sounds. I've been told it's an interesting voice (usually positively) most of my life.

I hate the colouration of this film.
It’s insipid. Like a weak mix. Ironically, it lacks clarity. It’s not gritty, but mushy and bland .
It might work with a non Spielberg film. But his style jars with this. Particularly the slap stick.
ET was fantastic.. But I feel Spielberg has always been the wrong director for sci fi.
Schindler’s list was fantastic. Like ET, it’s grit comes from emotive realism. Being black and white, it’s gritty but with contrast . And of course there’s the red coat. Which does a stellar emotive job, that the red ball doesn’t live up to.

You know, I think I partially agree with you that Spielberg might not have been the best person to direct this movie. I like it a lot overall, but I've never been big on the goofiness and had to look past a lot of that to start to appreciate the movie more. It just feels like a lot of the time it has the wrong tone for the subject matter.
I say partially because another commenter informed me a while back that one of my favorite pieces of symbolism (the stuff with reflections and shattered mirrors) was very likely Spielberg's idea, which makes me think that probably a lot of the visual metaphors I liked were his idea. It's still very possible that another director might have done a better job in many ways, but then it'd just be a different film with different things to appreciate.
I'm loath to suggest a remake, but the premise is rich and intriguing enough that I'd probably be very interested in seeing another attempt at adapting it by someone like, say, Denis Villeneuve. Heck, Christopher Nolan could probably do something really great with it now that I think about it.
