- The Incredibles was one of my favorite movies as a child-what kid wouldn’t be fascinated by a superhero society? But growing up, I realized the movie is a lot darker than my kid self remembered.
At first glance, you would think Syndrome is the main villain, but I argue that the real villain was present before Syndrome even became Syndrome. Let me explain.
What does it mean to conform? In English, to conform means to behave according to the usual standards of behavior that are expected by a group or society. At our school, you were required to conform, and there was no place for originality.
This video essay explores the societal pressures and power dynamics portrayed in The Incredibles. From interviews and Bob's dead-end job to the metaphor of the clog, we see how conformity acts as the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.

Something I think what is lost is that Bob was actually good at his office job. The boss even said he didn’t know how Bob was writing checks and yet still remaining in the black. I interpreted that to mean, Bob knew the exact amount he could get away with approving without being fired.
He knew how to manipulate the system to actually help people and keep the company within their financial limits.
But his boss wanted him to squeeze every last penny he could.
I think if Bob had been allowed to save people (financially) like he did with that old woman. He would have been happier in his office job but he had to do it in secret. Even helping people that way.
Another thing I like is the foreshadowing at the beginning, Buddy almost died when taking off to fly and eventually his cape is what kills him.

There’s also the fact that if Bob were to be fired before the incident, he has grounds to sue AND immense knowledge of Insuricare’s corrupt policies. Mr. Huph doesn’t know anything about the Supers part, so he’d be scared of the possibility that Bob could put a massive hole in his company and make the public aware of his crimes.

The fact that this was a movie mostly intended for kids and it actually confirmed through unambiguous dialogue that it included suicide attempts and a villain who perpetrated mass genocide is still insane to this day. Yet the movie honestly might not have been as great if it hadn’t been that dark.

It says they have met their highest profit quarter ever, and also says that the employees will have to pay for things like pencils and other supplies and I think electricity too

Fun fact: Mr Incredible got sued before the Good Samaritan law was established in real life. So technically it WAS legal to sue someone for saving your life and accidentally injuring you back then. The attention to detail was impeccable. Matpat actually did an analysis on this topic
In real life, there’s no such thing as suing someone for saving a suicidal person. In fact, it’s the suicidal one who is going to pay for the trouble

I had never heard the "conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth" line before but that is such a perfect way to put it. You can't do anything truly great if there's any expectation to follow a norm because the status quo is the antithesis of innovation.

As someone else has said, "You cannot create beneficial change without offending someone" because not conforming offends so many people. We saw it with women's rights, POC rights, lgbt rights, industrial revolution, mobile phones. Progress will always offend someone, because they're offended that the people aren't conforming
What does” progress” mean though? Every new idea/innovation isn’t inherently good or even progress. Many modern ideas are just false images of progress. True progress is undeniable & nay sayers are simply pushed to the side.
I do have to admit tho, conformity is also what prevents or discourages supervillains and criminals like syndrome, bomb voyage, screen slaver and THE UNDERMINER
It occurs to me that normal humans with genius inventions are op in this universe. If Syndrome wasn't so messed up in the head, he could have just actually been the greatest hero ever and uplifted everyone to that level. It would have proven his point, but in a better way.

This was a *true* family movie. Basic concepts and high adrenaline screens kids would enjoy while at the same time potraying deep, interesting, and controversial topics only teens and adults would understand.

A syndrome style villain is the type you’d have to be supremely unlucky or live in really awful places to find. But Mr. Huph exists in every major company, and we’re all going to be cursed with dealing with someone like that at some point
@connormclernon26 Fear is ALWAYS part of our themes. We have to suppress it. The government uses it to suppress us with fear, and we as society is filled with greed and fear. It's because they've done something for years and dominate it. And then they just get angry because they are greedy and try to get superior. They wont accept changes. They just want us to be submissive. Even the greatest people all the way to the not so great people Always 100% have to deal with awful obstacles.

The Incredibles helped me understand why the USA's lack of basic healthcare is a problem. Health insurance providers specifically make money by finding reasons to NOT help people.

I've always found it off why American conservatives say that they don't trust the government to make decisions about their healthcare, which I can certainly understand. But these same people trust a private corporation that has a direct financial incentive to let them suffer and die.

I’d have to agree with you. Bob seemed a lot more miserable living a hum drum life working at an insurance company than he did fighting syndrome and that’s really saying something considering for a moment, he thought his wife and two children were murdered. In a way syndrome becoming a villain and fighting. Mr. incredible was the best thing to ever happen to him in his family.

from the context of the movie, it doesn't make much sense tbh. a "super" is someone who has superhuman abilities and uses them to be a hero. the idea that their label should just now change because now everyone has superhuman abilities is, weird.

sure, you can reason that "they are just humans now", since everyone has superhuman abilities, but that doesn't change the fact that the original word meant human+hero, the superhuman abilities being simply the catalyst for this choice.
supers would always exist, only now that everyone has superhuman abilities, it would just be harder and more complicated. the fact of the matter is, good people who sacrifice themselves for the greater good will always exist, so supers can never truly die out.
When I was younger, I thought Syndrome saying "I am your biggest fan" when he confronts Mr. Incredible was him repeating a phrase to remind Mr. Incredible of who he was. But I think he was actually doing more things with that statement. Even though he wants to make him suffer and kill him, he STILL is his biggest fan. That is why he is seen fanboying after he realized Mr. Incredible faked his death. I haven't watched the movie recently as an adult, so I didn't connect those pieces.

I don't know about being a fan, but he still totaly nerds out on superhero stuff (hence why he still wants to pretend to be one). And superhero stuff incorporates stealth and infiltration of the villains base, so of course he loves when someone still outsmarts him in that regard.
What I love about Mr. Incredible is that surface level he looks like a washed up super but he actually didn’t even want to quit and quite literally loved helping people. Not even for the glory and praise that was an added bonus but his obsession and addiction was saving peoples lives. He’ll wear a basic outfit and a ski mask and run into a burning building if it means someone’s life gets saved, he’ll sacrifice his job justs to help an elderly lady. He beautifully contrasts Syndrome who solely wants the glory and fame but will hurt lives instead of saving them to achieve it.
Imagine getting in trouble at work for literally doing your job

It happens to a lot of Autistic people, because a lot of people assumes they do it to impress others, when they are doing it because they need to.
People get so jealous because lots of Autistic people do good things because it's the right thing to do and others feel threatened by it.
This is the difference between a kids movie and a family film.
I love the difference
The incredibles not being able to let out their true selves, being forced to conform and hide their biggest talents that are a large part in defining who they fundamentally are and what they want in life… I can draw many comparisons between that and having autism. I mean, if people put people in either the ‘normal’ box or ‘special’ box, I tend to feel like I’m in the special box. My way of experiencing the world, my interests, my way of communicating, etcetera… It’s all different from ‘normal’. But you’re expected to be ‘normal’. You’re raised to be and become ‘normal’. And rings especially true, having had a recent diagnosis, having not known about my autism since the start of my adolescence. I keep thinking that I shouldn’t walk a ‘normal’ path, but instead try and focus on my biggest strengths, which are strengths society doesn’t tend to value much. Society pressures my weaknesses more than my strengths. And in the film, the incredibles have to hide their (literal) strengths, and are over reliant on weaknesses. Dash is not allowed to do sports. Bob works a job meant for heartless, cold people, which he’s not. The pressure points society puts pressure on are the weaknesses of people who would be labelled ‘special’.

I have autism as well and when I was finishing first year of college a few months ago they would force you to do certain things like planning, these things are mandatory for a pass grade.
I didn't need to do these things and would prefer to spend time on the main work of coursework but that is not how it works, instead I have to pretend that the plan worked and helped when it didn't. Hopefully in the future when I have things ready I will be able to create my own way to live and make money rather than being in a job.
Also something extremely important I need to point out. If you have autism and ADHD, and you take ADHD medicine and you didn't already know, non-stimulant ADHD medicine is better than stimulant because you do not get the anxiety/overthinking. The non-stimulant helps you mask autism better rather than going in unprepared so you would have it easier socially.
@@alf73 I graduated from high school (or the Dutch equivalent of it) a year ago. A little over a year ago (time flies when you’re not having much fun). I proceeded to study political science afterwards, but it quickly started to not feel right. The people around me weren:t the type of people I feel comfortable with. And a lot was demanded of my non-existent planning skills. I didn’t like the course enough for those factors to be overridden. And the research stuff… I hated it. I absolutely couldn’t stand it. I went on a little vacation with my parents, to visit my brother who studied abroad for a while. Great week. I have started to realise how much I value my brother since he left home. He still lives nearby and visits often, but I used to see him daily. After that week was done it swept over me that I had to miss my brother for one or two more months. Considering he studies at the same uni I did, back at home, it was the worst ever timing for him to go abroad, from my perspective (but he had a wonderful time and that’s what counts). And I also felt a sudden dread of continuing political science. And it all came out soon after. The first two and only tests I made both went well, which made me more confused as to what to do. But I then decided to pull the plug. We started seeking coaching and I reevaluated my choice of study. Even though I did gain valuable experience, I felt like I was back at square one, if not further back. I really started feeling homesickness, when it came to my high school. It was relatively small and therefore it was not that overstuffed and overstimulating. In my last year, though, I was super eager to leave and start walking a path of my own.
Right now I struggle a lot with finding proper coaching. I left the psychologist who helped diagnose me and started municipal coaching. It wasn’t autism specific. Turns out to not have been a great decision. I feel like I’ve not been moving forward much at all. And it’s clear something autism specific is needed. But they don’t want to refer me as of yet. We got advice from an autism specific agency and they advise to refer us. I want to be referred. My parents. The GP. Thus far it feels like I’ve been going around in circles and it all starts taking a long time, to the point I don’t really feel taken seriously.
Tough couple months or so. I recently came across videos about autistic burnout and I think that’s part of what I’m going through now. I have enrolled in a new course (two actually… I’ll only start one) (at uni) but I don’t feel too confident that it will work out. Either linguistics or American Studies. I went to open days and such and had fun, but I still have lingering questions about the uni as a whole… I think it doesn’t suit me. I think perhaps I’ve landed here again through neurotypical expectations. Because it doesn’t feel like the type of thing I really want to do. There’s a difference between finding something fun and interesting and being passionate about something. I don’t feel passionate for any of the courses I’ve browsed through, barring one.
I saw a creative writing study that sounded really interesting. Unfortunately, there’s only one open day a year and it had already passed before I quit political science. So I don’t really have much of a view on it. But it sounds very enticing. I feel like that’s what I should be chasing. That’s where I should cast of my mask of normalcy and embrace my inner self and flaunt it about, for the world to see. And whoever disapproves… I don’t care about their opinions. A friend from high school has autism too (and I believe ADHD as well) and he’s been chasing his dreams, deciding to explore and advance his musical talent. And I feel like that’s the kind of step I should take… and yet, I don’t. I feel held back. Expectations, perhaps. I feel like few people understand how crucial writing is to me. I don’t think many people can really grasp the intensity of an autistic special interest. I don’t think others could comprehend how much time it is given, how much time is sometimes demands, in my head.

Honestly if the whole suicide and train incident happened here in the netherlands, mr incredible would be found innocent. Since here in the netherlands we don't have jury trials, but only judges and mr incredible didn't do anything wrong by law. In the movie mr incredible should have told buddy, that bomb voyage put the bomb on his cape and simply and kindly tell him this is why it is still too dangerous for him, but that his inventions can eventually indeed help superheroes and also let him do that.

The film takes place before the US enacted the “Civil Duties Act” (I can’t remember the actual name) that stops people from seeing someone for doing their Jobs, so people couldn’t sue Mr. Incredible for saving their lives, yet still can be worked around (like unnecessary harshness, or Sexual Intent) unfortunately.
The thing is I don’t think the lawsuit actually worked, but it opened the floodgates once people realized Superheroes could be sued.
That actually sounds incredibly dangerous that a judge is your entire court authority…the purpose of a jury is to prevent potential unjustified bias or nepotism by a judge…
@@TheGreatSalsaMan In my eyes a jury causes more unjustified bias and nepotism, than preventing it. But we also have three judge courts for really severe cases.
I've been sitting with this "environment shapes people" conundrum for a while. I always wonder "how do I shape environment, then?"
With something as big as society, "finding your way out" is the best conclusion in my mind for now. You can't change people around you, but... you can change people around you.

Finding your way out is liberating, but, puts you in position of an outsider. As horrible as conforming is, the mutual trauma is a means of connection that in itself is valuable. Yeah, your outside the prison walls… but everyone is still inside…

One of my favorite details is "Fly home Buddy, I work alone" has Bomb Voyage cut out in Syndrome's flashback, showing he only cares about Mr. Incredible and that's what stuck with him

The Incredibles universe actually did have a lot of potential. The bonus features on the DVD even came with a bunch of lore and backstories for some of the supers. Turning the film into a franchise would’ve made perfect sense. It could’ve expanded the themes that the film had, called out the unfairness of the system more, and fleshed out the characters more. Not to mention all the cool heroes and villains. Plus, it would’ve been very profitable. Too bad they waited 14 years to continue the story and even then, it wasn’t that good. Seriously, you think they would’ve started production on a sequel right away?

Conformity is THE ONLY villain of the movie, from school pressing Dash down, to work pressing Bob down, to the end game of Syndrome making everyone as super as everyone else, conformity, or the threat thereof, is the only source of strife for any of the characters all throughout the film. I'm glad you could realize such.

This movie really was just so deep and good. Why don't we get this kind of stuff anymore? The incredibles, Lilo and stitch, OG ghost busters, OG twister, Idiocracy. Movies and series that made genuine commentary on life and current events, giving life lessons with real value.
Nowadays everything seems to have as much value as the emoji movie... From forced shitty sequels, to blatant advertising made into a movie.
Cuz big companies no longer value family messages and are bought out to show political agendas and whatnot. Good things take time but look at how many subpar movies a company like disney are producing. Unfortunately they make more money pushing out 10 movies in 2 years than 1 good movie.

I quite like the subtle detail in that scene with Helen and Dash in the car.
Helen is trying to be positive when she says that they need to be like everyone else, but her expression slowly falls away afterwards. By the time she says "Everyone's special", her enthusiasm is all but gone, hinting that she's not even convincing herself with her own words.
I could never help but wonder if in that moment, she may've been longing for the old days like Bob does, but focusing on being a mother is her way of coping.
Now that I'm older I'm really seeing syndromes perspective a lot clearer.
Having ur hero walk all over ur dreams can do some real damage.

When I was a kid, I didn't understand, well, anything that Bob and Mr. Huph were talking about in their conversation. But I knew from the beginning that Mr. Huph was a bad person for not letting Bob help the man that was getting mugged. But when I started understanding what Bob and Mr. Huph were talking about, I realized that Mr. Huph was EVEN WORSE of a person than I first thought he was.

There are three different levels of conformity:

I don't think the train crash was the direct cause of Supers being outlawed, but more like the final nail in the coffin. From what we saw in the old news reel, anti-super sentiments had already been growing amongst people for quite some time.

You know now that i think about it im surprise this wasn't the plot of Incredibles 2. That a group of former Super Heroes band together and has had enough of society's nonsense. In regards to the banning of Super Heroes, cause these Supers risk there lives saving the day, even saving the city if not maybe even the world on occasion. Cause imagine if the whole The Underminer thing there weren't any Supers to intervene the whole situation would be a whole lot worse. I'm Surprise Super Villains didn't take advantage of the Super Hero Ban and gone on to conquer the world over the years this ban had been in effect.
That should have been the plot of the second movie Rogue Supers turned villain saying something like "If You will not respect us as Heroes, then you will instead fear us as Villains" .
This would be an interesting plot/ story point but probably too dark for Disney

I think the reason rogue supers weren't a thing was because if any supers engaged in criminal pursuits they would lose any financial backing and protection from the governments meant to cover them, which makes super villainy ridiculously unfeasible in the long run.

In life we meet a lot of people who are one hug or conversation from the deep end. And now with all the kids gunning their classmates and staff down... It makes me wonder how much change could happen if everyone was taught to be proactive and not reactive.
Buddy clearly needed to have more roots laid down so cutting one of them wouldn't make him fall. But Mr incredible was his one root, and it was cut.
I'm glad there are at least celebrities who understand how critical it can be to treat people kindly and let down others easily, John Cena is an example of that. In public at least, even when he might be offended, he's professional and presents himself in a way that expresses his feelings while still illustrating that he can be approached without regrets if done so respectfully.
I pray there will be people out there who understand this and reach out to children so that they can save lives. At the end of the day... It really can be that easy.

I've been pulled over so many times by cops. The only time I actually got angry about being pulled over for not knowing about a street sign in the area, they left me alone and didn't give me a ticket.
And I looked literally 10+ years younger than I am. And I'm short as hell. I'm a fully grown 5'2" white/filipino male in the USA, and people treat me like shit. I'm shorter than Muggsey Bogues, and he was famous and still treated like shit. The world hates oddball people.
There's a "box" that people put you in, or "vibe", and if you don't act like they expect you to act, or if they can't control you, they get angrier and hate you to the point of disrespecting you and nobody does a thing about it.
And we all know, nobody is coming to save a man. He must save himself.
Respect is based on fear and is forced. A guy can work 20 years at a job and be treated like shit, but a new guy who is probably 6'5" starts off on a supervisor position.
The world is cruel, especially the western world.
Charlie Bucket's dad's job was replaced with a robot. I worked with the exact same robots programmed with a "teach pendant" device, and the robots messed up all the time. Even video games have random glitches that can occur based on lag/overloading. And people have been trusting their self-driving mode cars and they've already crash into people on the road.
This era is way in over its head.
The story about the mouse in the jar of grains is much like this.

a Fact someone pointed out is that they knew where Frozone was because Mirage was watching them that one night. Frozone was going to be next, but they found Bob who Syndrome was looking for. The Omnidroid drove Bob to a place with Lava, hot enough air that Frozone would have issues fighting it. If Lucius hadn't been with Bob that night, he couldve ended up like the rest of the supers.
In a weird sense of allegory, this can be like becoming "woke" instead of conforming to society. But besides that point that's why I love media literacy. They really know how to show you what's to come, and probably how things are going to go, to get us to open our eyes before it's too late.

One thing I really love is the other superheroes we NEVER meet still feel like actual characters and like they were part of the bigger universe of the Incredibles. Gazerbeam's demise was horrifying and sad and we only know of him prior from a newspaper clipping of him missing and his attendance at the wedding. Thunderhead was really good with kids and you can see he LOVES his job as a hero and his accidental cape snag is so sad. And all the supers terminated by the omnidroid on the computer just hits heavily, knowing Bob knew each and every hero on that list is now gone. The hero roster in the "glory days" was enough to build a team that rivals the Avengers and I think that's such a cool detail that other minor heroes are treated with so much respect that we as an audience feel for them with such limited screen time
I don't want to conform to society and I refuse to be someone that I'm not just to please people who don't know me nor care about me. And, if this makes me "rebellious", then so be it. I don't care if people get upset at my refusal to conform to their narrow-minded expectations because I won't change for anyone.

A nice detail is that Mr. Incredible being sued for saving someone from suicide was very much possible due to the time period of the flashback. Since the Good Samaritan Law likely hadn't been passed in the US just yet.
Something interesting about that is Bob probably wanted to settle down out of his own choice but when forced to settle down he was miserable and Helen never actually wanted to settle down but did so for her safety and the safety of the people around her, also men are statistically a lot more reckless than women so it really makes sense that Bob would go out and do super hero work while Helen who just as much wants to do super hero work, doesn't

Society loves money people , it doesn't matter if you are spiritually ahead of others, in the eyes of society you're not ahead of a millionaire or someone who has a bit more the you're "status"".
Money isn't evil, its humans action is what's evil, when this people hurt others for money. ( and this is happening at our jobs, social media, tv, politics, education system, and not just).
And i don't know if people will ever acknowledge this, they would better live in their "status" life and be lied for as long as they die.
