If you wanted to get into some gangsta shit, add a high torque starter to a carbureted motor and you’ll save yourself from continuous cranking and voltage drops. Dude i had a 2wd shortbed single cab Silverado with the 5.3 with bolt ons and a cam. Now it ran and idled great no gripe with that thing. At the time it was almost 20 yrs old when i had it and the hemis and Ecoboost couldnt pull away from me. BUT my first truck was an 85 squarebody with a 305 and a quadrajet. That thing was the smoothest engine ive ever owned regardless of model year car/truck anything. I tried doing some bolt ons to it and when we would try n bump the starter 9 times outta 10 it would start ehen you didnt want it to. I mean u whispered on the key and it fired up. I think that quadrajet was a big part of it. I upgraded to a 327 365hp built version and it was a screamer but i replaced the carb with a 600double pumper holley and it never did do what i wanted that quadrajet was actually bigger cfm sidnt know that til years later and i eventually went to a summit brand 750 and it ran well had the idle tuned good no hesitation in the throttle response but whatever was going on inside that quadrajet was magic and nothing to this day comes close to how perfect that thing was tuned

I love when car guys from basically sea level talk about tuning carbs with attitude. It’s pretty easy to tune a carb that’s never starving for oxygen. When you can make something run good under even normal driving conditions at 3,500’ and have it run just as good at 12,000’ on the same adjustment I’ll respect your ability. Now THATS what a good tune does. pretty easy to think you’re dialed in when you never have to test it out. 😂

Damn, I don't know a hemi lifter tick from rod knock...never heard either from my car. Guess I need to swap a big block in it so I can.😂
Foreal though, I'm talking to the older car guys in my shop to learn what I can before I start my own projects.

A lot of the younger fellas don't know how to pedal the throttle to keep a carbureted engine running.

Tune it right and it'll run right. My wore out 302 starts at 18°F with a few pumps and knocking it out of fast idle and taking off about 30sec later...
Tune that carb and ignition system. Points do fine. There's so many ways to tune them to work with each other perfectly.
Once you've fine tuned them together, the engine will start fast and easy.

I'm runnin a 750cfm Holly single pumper on my all roller 383 SBC & my baby starts no matter what temperature it is with 1 single pump of the throttle, & about 1 to 2 seconds of cranking! You tune a good carb right, & she'll start as fast or faster than ANY fuel injection ya wanna put it up against!! Now if ya don't have an electric or manual choke on that carb you may have to sit & hold a miner amount of throttle on it till it warms up enough to run on it's own. But if your a TRUE gear head, you'll enjoy those moments that you just can not get with fuel injection. Oh, it's also a proven fact that a good carb setup makes more power at wide open throttle than ANY fuel injection setup! The main reason most high-end racers use fuel injection is because they can do more complex fine tuning quicker with a laptop.

Carb over efi all day! Tuning efi is hard but tuning a carb with getting squirter size and accel. pump cams timed right along with jet size tuning. Man there is no better feeling when that thing makes a clean hit

I love both. I just hate playing the jetting game, it blows ass constantly pulling bowls and cleaning gas off the intake. Adjusting only does so much if you need to jet up or down and once you do, your stuck retuning everything all over again.

I ran a carb'd rocket 350 on my 80 olds about a decade ago. I miss the sound of that old bastard, but I don't miss the mileage, lol. She'd get 13 on a good day when I wasn't being too much of an ass on the highway, and I couldn't even hit triple digits due to gearing, but that was a seriously fun car to fart around town in!
