You learn something from each day with the old man and Bob working together, the knowledge between the two is accumulated over decades of hard work.. MY FAVORITE GARAGE CHANNEL ! 😁👍🏼 Bill I have a 5.3L LS aka: 327 Ci and I love it. Chevy made their small blocks last a lot longer and get 3-4X more miles outta them before a rebuild after they came up with the LS. I’m a old school guy from the 60’s 70’s & 80’s But Chevy took their engines to the next level with the LS as far as ENDURANCE & LONGEVITY goes. I was also hesitant to give the LS a try but once I did I really like the LS 5.3L & the 5.7L small Block LS’s they’re great engines.
I agree for the most part but I've seen several I mean several 350 Vortec engines over 300k in trucks ect.... Maybe 1968 tech but there is not inherent problem with the geometry of the sbc when done with modern metallurgy and build practices...id postulate drop the ring size to as thin as LS and there ya go... Now stock block isn't gonna hold the power the skirted crank LS will hell no...but endurance shouldn't be an issue with proper fueling and cooling...

Bill you almost had me there with your sign off music at the end of your video. I thought your weren't going to show the E85 dyno pull and end the video like a good TV series to cut it short. Then tell us you'll have to wait till the next video. We would have been upset to have to wait ... great video....
Based on the tight EGT spread between cylinders...perhaps the most reliable route for a lil street engine that makes good power...go EFI. Yes more maximum power using a Carb; however, the wide spread of EGT suggests less long term reliability. Pretty interesting stuff. I considered going carb when I built my 6.1...but wanted to make good long term power. I've now put nearly 50,000 miles on this engine in 5 years. Stock gen 4 bottom end, 30 over flat tops, split profile BTR .593/.631"lift cam ...Trickflow 225X heads that flow 348 cfm at .600 92mm throttle body , 40lb injectors and 1 7/8" long tube headers. Black x racing built me a stout 4l60E with 3600 rpm stall converter , and 3:73 rear gear. Pretty tame compared to what the boys run, but runs strong...smacked lotsa asses with it...often get well into the 20s for mpg, and all I've ever done to it is Uncle Buckos favorite thing...maintenance.

The engine doesn't care *that* much about the egt spread. You'd lose it if you saw the egt spread on a Continental O-470, and your life literally depends on the reliability of one of those.

Loved you throwing the E85 carb on and showing the numbers... Crazy that the E85 made so much more power than the gas on an engine with just 9.5:1 compression..... I think a set of flat tops to bring it to 11:1 with the same combo dialed in it would see 450hp and 410ft lbs.... I love these videos of the in depth carb tuning😢

I’m not in to changing jetting, accelerator pumps every time the weather changes. My Edelbrock pro Flo on my 406 is maintenance free for the most part and self corrects for any change of altitude/weather conditions. If there is any loss of hp with efi it would be minimal, benefits outweigh any negatives in my opinion
100% true. For a street car and yr round operation.... FI w/a feedback system cannot be beat. On a INDOOR dyno.. and considering costs... a carb might inch out a FI. But... my engine is in a car... and I drive at part throttle 99% of the time.

At 59 years old I am still a carburetor guy but learning every day on fuel injection. the MSD 6014 setup to run the LS ignition system probably would have been better suited for running the motor with carb. cool to see bob playing with his new dyno setup.
I'm not sure why they couldn't run a map sensor off the plenum and just run the fuel tech it doesn't know what it's hooked too, ive done this with FAST, MS3Pro and Holley
@JBAutomotive794 I'm not certain on fuel tech ( but I mean Bob should invest in a carb retrofit tps many sell them, ive used them for carb 4l80e applications) but just off the top of my head wouldn't speed density go pure map... Though TPS is probably telling the ecu that it's at idle... For a bush work around a $12 oriellys ls tps plugged in, scaled, then laid to 100% walk out cell? Just for that day.... But yea a retrofit carb TPS would probably be useful there...could go carb to efi testing and selling..... It's interesting it's been years since I looked at fuel tech software though I went deep in MS3 Pro Ultimate which is limitless if you think it, between you and the community it will do it lol....running a damn Rasberry Pi4 to handle can shit, wild west fully unlocked dream it do it..

Great video. Reverified what I already knew, but it’s good for the younger generation to see it on the Dyno. Carburetors make more power than EFI, always have and always will! I would love to see few pulls with a 750 and a 850 on gas just to see how much power they would make vs the 950 on the 5.3.
I had someone telling me recently I need fool injection on my road racecar. Asked why? It will make more power, as this just proved it will make less power. A passenger intake may make some more with efi,, but a single plane will make a LOT more with a carby. As will the right size carburettor also. I am happy with the efi on my road cars, start ok, drive ok and reasonably economical. But power? No.
I liked seeing that Bob is always wanting to try new things just to gather information and he's been doing this for many many years now but just likes being in and around motors
I 100% agree with you, the spacer with a single plane would work quite nicely on that engine. what a lot of people don't understand is whether it's a small block, big block, ls, ford, or even dodge. you have to remember that they are just basically big air pumps. With that it's hard to knock on a stock engine with a cam making over 400. got to love that flow from those ls heads.
Look up the term volumetric efficiency ( hint it's how the efi works and why they are air pumps)...with overlap and headers for scavenging you actually can get more than 100% volumetric efficiency and it all depends on baro at intake stroke I just cant understand how people, though it's cliche, can't see engines as air movers...everything is rated that way including gasp port cfm....
Love the content! I use a msd 6014 box on my carbureted ls engines. The key is time them like a standard small block! Just because you have coil on plug does not make a difference. Then once its done you can do individual cylinder timing and even create a timeing curve for drive ability.
You would time them like the combustion chamber efficiency dictates thru every standard practice to find optimal timing for a given cylinder head design and induction package.... You go tossing sbc timing at SOME ls designs especially higher compression ones on stock pistons and have a bucket close... In his example what showed little gain at 33 via EFI needed 36 to replicate with the increased droplet size ( there are other factors involved too ), just take an LS engine that has knock past 24 degrees and toss 36-37 locked out in it at peak torque LOL bring a broom....
I love back to back tests. I remember decades ago Pat Musi was an early adopter of EFI. His race engines with carbs always made more peak HP than EFI. But he proved EFI was faster on the track than his carb combos because EFI made more power throughout the power band (under the curve) . Cool video, thanks.
Single plane intake will make that motor sing, another test I would do is flip the spacer on the dual plane (the holes faces the intake) and see if it likes the divided center of the spacer and distribute the mixture, can't wait to see the e85 results and amazing content sir thank you.
I can watch people testing on a dyno forever and never get tired of it! Hence why engine masters is my favorite show! And no matter how many I've seen, a carburetor always sqeaks out a few more horsepower than efi everytime! And now with todays electronics you can do anything with a carb as you can with efi except for fuel tables, which you really don't need to worry about with a carb, it is what it is.
Another great video Bill - really interesting to learn how to deal with these various issues that most people inevitably run into at some point if you're messing with a new combination.

I have the same problem with my built 6.0 ls with a carburetor when flooring it it stumbles down low. I believe I need to jet down my 750 carb and add about 6 degrees of timing in it
I’ve only done one ls swap myself and it was a carb swapped 5.3 but it was ran with a msd stand alone computer. The tuning in that thing is amazing, tuned it myself and never had any of these issues really.
Even though I would never put an LS in a Classic car that is impressive what they make for power with just a cam. Wish I had an uncle Bob near me to build me 427 like you just did the giveaway on. Damn I want one of those for my Nova
Did a carbed 6.0 LQ9 in my 78 Trans Am. We set total ignition 24 based on what an EFI Tuner told us. We bumped it up to 32 and it liked it a lot. The car would fry the tires in all gears. Could probably like more timing but it was close to pinging even on 93 Octane pump gas. Later on we found out the heads we used had bumped up the compression to about 12.5:1…30-32 degrees is where it was the happiest.
What you bob and yourself found is basically the same thing drtunemall found doing a very similar thing. More peak with the carb but more data and more adjustability with efi. I guess it depends what you prefer. A little more power or a little more data. I feel they both have a place. Good video Bill. Good work to you all. Love this stuff
Might have been mentioned, but I missed any reference to accelerator pump cams. They make a large difference when less than optimal carb size or engine vacuum is a issue. the cams are a awesome resource for pump shot timing. Power valve selection / timing might have trimming effects found beneficial as well. Great show , ty.
Not sure if its been looked into or not, but I believe the 706 heads had issues with cracking. Specifically the castech castings of the heads. Might be worth looking into!

The dual plane intake i have i cut a notch in the center divider and it helped everything even out and made it run better buy I like the single plane intake better and I'm sure on the dyno a single plane intake is the way to go.
Great video Bill! I have a 13 Silverado with the same 5.3 with a Procharger and a couple bolt ons and last time on the Dyno it made 479hp to the wheels. Great little motor. Actually I have been on Big Chief’s discord since he started it and he has given me tons of advice and information on cam options and some other things for this motor. I’m your age so I love old school SBC but I have had my truck since new and I have grown to love these little LS 5.3. I can tow my 24 ft enclosed trailer with usually a 3200-5000lb car and it does it with ease and it is fun to drive. Definitely a great “every man’s “ motor to build👍👍👍
SBC should hold 490whp just fine, I suspect if your truck had a vortec 350 in it which also go 300k miles for that long you would be fond of it as well... I don't think most would say LS isn't superior, just at some levels not required depending on goals
@@ShawnGilbert1967 Honestly, I am a fan of all the Chevy motors. I have put multiple Chevy cars and trucks 250k-350k through the years with no issues. I know most people have a preference but I am a fan of all of them because they have never given me problems and when I built them to make power they always held up fine.
@Mr.Will73 that's my experience....on ME the miles I seen pulling engine and trans didn't jump up to 300k at a high percentage till around ore tbi thru tuned port but WAY pre LS....besides the optispark those engine held up well too when we are talking endurance under 700fwhp.... Think a 5.3l LS is great for torque shit unchoke a gen 5 LT with a small cam and headers... The way prices have gotten out of control I honestly think the best big power engine for the money is a BBC...ive taken stock and 2bolt converted to 4, well over 1100...with F2s and F1A-94s...
@@ShawnGilbert1967 I have a 1 ton Square body with its original 454 and it is a great motor even stock. What impressed me with the 5.3 is the power it makes for its size. Obviously the 6.0/6.2 are much more powerful. I owed both at one time but haven’t had a new LT but have had the TPI, LT4 from the 90’s and LS1. All are great motors. Everything is relative but all imo are great motors!
@Mr.Will73 I agree I have ran 327ci sbc but zipped em high with low gears... All that's really happened here and I'm no hater I have a gen 4 Darton sleeved LS with Brodix BR7 LS7 induction in my 67 Camaro with an FTI triple disc billet stall and 4l80e, all holley pro dash with hi ram shifting 7700rpm.... I'm just saying it's mainly heads...get some 15 degree heads on a SBC ( or hell 18x like many ran that used the 24 valve train) and there isn't that much difference below the max power of the stock block... Then the reason why the LT Gen 5 runs better is the 11 degree ( vs my ls7 12 degree ) valve angle with GDI.... I'm not putting LS down at all its just that the over hyping has driven them up to not quite the deal they were or even close and actually ironically made room for the same money to make BIG power NA on say BBC...I paid more for my LS7 heads than I did for fully ported AFR BBC heads flowing 420cfm lol....its NUTS half the aluminum.... It's a good time to be a gear head but damn 4l80e are getting harder to find and im not having anything I can't drive in....I got one spare left after I let a friend have one....remember when they were $100 a core and now it's 1000 for a builder haha nuts
Bill you are very well schooled on carb operation and timing, you are waking up alot of the instruction and operation of my engine design and operation days, we didnt have a dyno at the tech center but we did have some test mule cars and a long strip of blacktop in the back parking area, we had no DIS or EFI back then so it was all seat of the pants and listening, checking plugs and tailpipe, this kind of tech is teaching these young guys that think they need a scanner to diag a car for them to pay attention to how the car is acting

I don't have anything against carbureators... but I wouldn't give up the efi for a little bit of power. Drive ability... instant tuning corrections for changes in conditions... fuel economy... engine longevity... the reason manufacturers have gone away from carbureation isn't due to lack of skill or user ability.... it's just simply hands down better. I have a carbureated hot rod and a fuel injected hot rod, and I love them both. Tinkering on both is a lot of fun.
A dual plane intake needs a open spacer plate IV had alot of experience with them on dyno and at the drag strip and the 2 inch open spacer makes way more power than a 4 hole spacer because of the separation in the intake...

Great video. Reverified what I already knew, but it’s good for the younger generation to see it on the Dyno. Carburetors make more power than EFI, always have and always will! I would love to see few pulls with a 750 and a 850 on gas just to see how much power they would make vs the 950 on the 5.3.
I had someone telling me recently I need fool injection on my road racecar. Asked why? It will make more power, as this just proved it will make less power. A passenger intake may make some more with efi,, but a single plane will make a LOT more with a carby. As will the right size carburettor also.
I am happy with the efi on my road cars, start ok, drive ok and reasonably economical. But power? No.
I liked seeing that Bob is always wanting to try new things just to gather information and he's been doing this for many many years now but just likes being in and around motors
Holdner had similar results. Made the most peak power with a carb. He made more power at lower rpm with efi but was using the FAST intake.

I 100% agree with you, the spacer with a single plane would work quite nicely on that engine. what a lot of people don't understand is whether it's a small block, big block, ls, ford, or even dodge. you have to remember that they are just basically big air pumps. With that it's hard to knock on a stock engine with a cam making over 400. got to love that flow from those ls heads.

Look up the term volumetric efficiency ( hint it's how the efi works and why they are air pumps)...with overlap and headers for scavenging you actually can get more than 100% volumetric efficiency and it all depends on baro at intake stroke I just cant understand how people, though it's cliche, can't see engines as air movers...everything is rated that way including gasp port cfm....
Love the content! I use a msd 6014 box on my carbureted ls engines. The key is time them like a standard small block! Just because you have coil on plug does not make a difference. Then once its done you can do individual cylinder timing and even create a timeing curve for drive ability.
You would time them like the combustion chamber efficiency dictates thru every standard practice to find optimal timing for a given cylinder head design and induction package....
You go tossing sbc timing at SOME ls designs especially higher compression ones on stock pistons and have a bucket close...
In his example what showed little gain at 33 via EFI needed 36 to replicate with the increased droplet size ( there are other factors involved too ), just take an LS engine that has knock past 24 degrees and toss 36-37 locked out in it at peak torque LOL bring a broom....
I love back to back tests. I remember decades ago Pat Musi was an early adopter of EFI. His race engines with carbs always made more peak HP than EFI. But he proved EFI was faster on the track than his carb combos because EFI made more power throughout the power band (under the curve) . Cool video, thanks.
Single plane intake will make that motor sing, another test I would do is flip the spacer on the dual plane (the holes faces the intake) and see if it likes the divided center of the spacer and distribute the mixture, can't wait to see the e85 results and amazing content sir thank you.

I can watch people testing on a dyno forever and never get tired of it! Hence why engine masters is my favorite show! And no matter how many I've seen, a carburetor always sqeaks out a few more horsepower than efi everytime! And now with todays electronics you can do anything with a carb as you can with efi except for fuel tables, which you really don't need to worry about with a carb, it is what it is.

I have the same problem with my built 6.0 ls with a carburetor when flooring it it stumbles down low. I believe I need to jet down my 750 carb and add about 6 degrees of timing in it
I can only imagine how many carburetors you have played with to get this knowledge.

I’ve only done one ls swap myself and it was a carb swapped 5.3 but it was ran with a msd stand alone computer. The tuning in that thing is amazing, tuned it myself and never had any of these issues really.

Even though I would never put an LS in a Classic car that is impressive what they make for power with just a cam. Wish I had an uncle Bob near me to build me 427 like you just did the giveaway on. Damn I want one of those for my Nova
Did a carbed 6.0 LQ9 in my 78 Trans Am. We set total ignition 24 based on what an EFI Tuner told us. We bumped it up to 32 and it liked it a lot. The car would fry the tires in all gears. Could probably like more timing but it was close to pinging even on 93 Octane pump gas. Later on we found out the heads we used had bumped up the compression to about 12.5:1…30-32 degrees is where it was the happiest.
What you bob and yourself found is basically the same thing drtunemall found doing a very similar thing. More peak with the carb but more data and more adjustability with efi. I guess it depends what you prefer. A little more power or a little more data. I feel they both have a place. Good video Bill. Good work to you all. Love this stuff
Might have been mentioned, but I missed any reference to accelerator pump cams. They make a large difference when less than optimal carb size or engine vacuum is a issue. the cams are a awesome resource for pump shot timing. Power valve selection / timing might have trimming effects found beneficial as well. Great show , ty.

Not sure if its been looked into or not, but I believe the 706 heads had issues with cracking. Specifically the castech castings of the heads. Might be worth looking into!

The dual plane intake i have i cut a notch in the center divider and it helped everything even out and made it run better buy I like the single plane intake better and I'm sure on the dyno a single plane intake is the way to go.
Great video Bill! I have a 13 Silverado with the same 5.3 with a Procharger and a couple bolt ons and last time on the Dyno it made 479hp to the wheels. Great little motor. Actually I have been on Big Chief’s discord since he started it and he has given me tons of advice and information on cam options and some other things for this motor. I’m your age so I love old school SBC but I have had my truck since new and I have grown to love these little LS 5.3. I can tow my 24 ft enclosed trailer with usually a 3200-5000lb car and it does it with ease and it is fun to drive. Definitely a great “every man’s “ motor to build👍👍👍
SBC should hold 490whp just fine, I suspect if your truck had a vortec 350 in it which also go 300k miles for that long you would be fond of it as well...
I don't think most would say LS isn't superior, just at some levels not required depending on goals
@@ShawnGilbert1967 Honestly, I am a fan of all the Chevy motors. I have put multiple Chevy cars and trucks 250k-350k through the years with no issues. I know most people have a preference but I am a fan of all of them because they have never given me problems and when I built them to make power they always held up fine.
@Mr.Will73 that's my experience....on ME the miles I seen pulling engine and trans didn't jump up to 300k at a high percentage till around ore tbi thru tuned port but WAY pre LS....besides the optispark those engine held up well too when we are talking endurance under 700fwhp....
Think a 5.3l LS is great for torque shit unchoke a gen 5 LT with a small cam and headers...
The way prices have gotten out of control I honestly think the best big power engine for the money is a BBC...ive taken stock and 2bolt converted to 4, well over 1100...with F2s and F1A-94s...
@@ShawnGilbert1967 I have a 1 ton Square body with its original 454 and it is a great motor even stock. What impressed me with the 5.3 is the power it makes for its size. Obviously the 6.0/6.2 are much more powerful. I owed both at one time but haven’t had a new LT but have had the TPI, LT4 from the 90’s and LS1. All are great motors. Everything is relative but all imo are great motors!

All that's really happened here and I'm no hater I have a gen 4 Darton sleeved LS with Brodix BR7 LS7 induction in my 67 Camaro with an FTI triple disc billet stall and 4l80e, all holley pro dash with hi ram shifting 7700rpm....
I'm just saying it's mainly heads...get some 15 degree heads on a SBC ( or hell 18x like many ran that used the 24 valve train) and there isn't that much difference below the max power of the stock block...
Then the reason why the LT Gen 5 runs better is the 11 degree ( vs my ls7 12 degree ) valve angle with GDI....
I'm not putting LS down at all its just that the over hyping has driven them up to not quite the deal they were or even close and actually ironically made room for the same money to make BIG power NA on say BBC...I paid more for my LS7 heads than I did for fully ported AFR BBC heads flowing 420cfm lol....its NUTS half the aluminum....
It's a good time to be a gear head but damn 4l80e are getting harder to find and im not having anything I can't drive in....I got one spare left after I let a friend have one....remember when they were $100 a core and now it's 1000 for a builder haha nuts

Bill you are very well schooled on carb operation and timing, you are waking up alot of the instruction and operation of my engine design and operation days, we didnt have a dyno at the tech center but we did have some test mule cars and a long strip of blacktop in the back parking area, we had no DIS or EFI back then so it was all seat of the pants and listening, checking plugs and tailpipe, this kind of tech is teaching these young guys that think they need a scanner to diag a car for them to pay attention to how the car is acting

I don't have anything against carbureators... but I wouldn't give up the efi for a little bit of power. Drive ability... instant tuning corrections for changes in conditions... fuel economy... engine longevity... the reason manufacturers have gone away from carbureation isn't due to lack of skill or user ability.... it's just simply hands down better. I have a carbureated hot rod and a fuel injected hot rod, and I love them both. Tinkering on both is a lot of fun.
A dual plane intake needs a open spacer plate IV had alot of experience with them on dyno and at the drag strip and the 2 inch open spacer makes way more power than a 4 hole spacer because of the separation in the intake...
