American here. I helped a friend by watching her son after school until she got home, and, yeah, I was pretty concerned about schools today. His friends just shared answers with each other on their papers and the teachers didn't care. Not sure how you retain anything that you don't have to strive for. Also worked with the teens in our church youth group who were unintentionally hilarious. Few understand analog clocks or have the months memorized. Scary.

As an asian and as a gen z, this hurts so much watching. In most asian cultures, there is a subtle competition of who is the smartest and the pressure of learning a lot in school as to not be seen as "dumb" or "stupid" by your fellow classmates or batchmates. Like Im not an american ofc, but some of these are very simple questions that should even be considered as "common" knowledge. Thank you Dylan for this video, know that you are smart, and that I hope this video enlightens other people.
Fellow gen z asian here (why does introducing yourself like this just feel ridiculous and awkward lol) I agree this exist and I partly hate it. Sure we aren't lacking in common knowledge at least but there's this superiority and condescending behavior that comes with this and that sucks. I don't like cringing at people who don't know things, because that's an easy fix (especially if they're willing), just teach them. Problem solved! We also have to be aware that the video Dylan's watching is edited and they probably filtered out all the people with the right answer in order to make a point out of, what, 4 to 5 people? So yeah.
@@GreySeashell-j3m Good point tho yeah, makes sense that they would filter out the people who answered correctly cuz ofc, the people who get it wrong makes it more content-worthy or click-baity idk. And I also agree that we should just teach people if they happen to not know instead of looking down or making them feel less (which I really dont understand why the previous generations do that to us wtf)
@@Tisbilly hmmm I see, but in your country, the competition is more on wealth I would say, and popularity. Correct me if Im wrong, but this is just an observation. Nothing really wrong with that, its just that it is different from other countries.

as an indian gen z this hurts my eyes because we were taught all this literally at 5 years old, even most of the questions related to the US 😭 now i feel like what we're learning in secondary school is way beyond what high school students in the US learn
They were probably taught this at the age of 5 too. The difference is they didn't care about class because that went against everything for their rebellion for "individuality".
Dylan trying to explain the 60m/h question gave me traumatic flashbacks to when my dad would try to teach me math and would just repeat himself until he was yelling and I was crying lmfao
A high-schooler relative of mine couldn't tell you where Japan was, but could tell you about the detailed history of something that happened in Japan. It's like they teach history without showing the students a map. That's my theory why these kids kept saying, "idk history," when talking about geography.
Often they teach geography as part of history class. A lot of schools don't have a specific geography class outside of high school electives. For part of my Euro History class we always had to memorize the map of countries of each test unit. I always did poorly placing them exactly, but knew the general area.
I was a person that hated history classes but I still got high 80s in the classes and grades in the 80s on state tests I had to pass in history. Geography was my jam. I literally had no interest in the rehashing of US history. It was incredibly boring. I did better with two years (we do two years in New York, with a whole year on a certain timeframe and then a second year on a different timeframe. For example, global 1 would be pre-1776 worldwide, and then Global 2 would be post-1776. Then we'd have a year in high school (3rd year) of purely US history and then 4th/last year it was half a year of economics and half a year of Participation on Government (like laws, voting, policy, etc). The Harlem Renaissance was the only interesting part of American history. That and learning about the different American Indian/Native American tribes (we actually visited a camp in 7th grade and got to live like they did for a day because our teacher was part Mohawk).
as someone attending a community college... they do have graduations, but i promise you a lot of people act like this. really sadly, they don't know seemingly basic knowledge. Even in highschool, i swear I dealt with people like this

I always try to take comfort when watching these kinds of videos, that they only show the people who get the answers wrong, and some people answered the questions correctly.
To this day I thought I was the dumbest person to walk this planet but after watching this I now feel elevated on a level I've never experienced before in my life
I’m in my 30s and I am sorry to say these individuals are smarter than the people I went to high school and college with. We used to do trivia games in class and the answers my peers gave just made me feel so bad for all the teachers who spent their time trying to impart knowledge. And yes, I’m from the USA.
Same. I was seen as the smart kid cuz I knew how to pay attention and still to this day people try to tell me idk what I'm talking about, even after showing multiple times.
@@celianunn2070 I remember those days. People have learned not to try arguing with me. Not only will I be right, I’ll know exactly how to prove I’m right. Case in point, the Navy is in my family. I had a substitute teacher tell me my surname (I’m not giving it out) is spelled wrong. I explained that sextant is Not my last name. That my surname is actually a position in the church. This idiot told me I was wrong so I got the dictionary and looked up both words, then had him read the definitions. I was 12 years old. He was probably in his late 20s/early 30s. I’ve had many similar encounters since.

@@celianunn2070 That sounds like a very stupid or very stubborn person. If not both. I wish I could say it gets better. But the truth is it doesn’t. There will always be some moron who is convinced he or she knows everything and you couldn’t possibly be right. I was born with 3 very rare medical problems. After knowing me 18 years, my best friend told me one of my medical issues didn’t exist and that I couldn’t have the symptoms I was having. I just stared at him like “are you sure you want to be schooled right now?” He remained adamant that I had told him the wrong condition. So I said “would you like to see the giant binders I’ve got chock full of my history with this condition that doesn’t exist? I’ve got 30 years of medical documentation.” And for some reason he decided to argue that I couldn’t have that many medical papers. At that point I lost it. There is 1 thing in this world that I know more about than anyone: my health. So if you have the gall to tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about, you better be prepared for the rage coming your way in response. I have been hospitalized a lot of times over what seemed like minor symptoms. I know when something is wrong. Shoot, I just saved my life in March by recognizing that I was turning yellow because my liver was in trouble.
As a teacher I can confirm. But I have to say...everyone is trying to blame the schools but in my honest opinion from what i've seen it has nothing to do with what is taught in the classroom but what media the students are consuming in their free time. When I was growing up we watched tv shows that explored things like history in a fun way or at least made intelligent jokes about history and/or science facts. magic school bus, mr rogers, boy meets world, game shows, etc. It was carefully crafted and scripted by networks and educated adults. Even the stupid jokes referenced facts and trivia and would reinforce things learned at school. That's how we all know the basic information needed to answer the questions in this video. Now all the kids are watching these days is content made by their peers or adults who are just trying to go viral and get views. Slime videos, pranks, memes, dances, challenges, drama, thirst traps, fail videos! It's what I call "serotonin shot" content, which is fine in moderation but I feel that's all they get anymore!
I got all the answers right and I'm not American. Shame we have to learn so much about a country that isn't ours and people there don't know their own history/geography. Your videos always make me laugh Dylan. Thanks for that.
for the continents: the answer will be different depending on which country you're from; many countries learn that there are 6 continents, US citizens (for example) learn that there are 7, because they separate the america by "the americaS" (north and south) and a lot of countries just know about americA, the whole continent divided by 3 subregions (north, central and south)
@@ashmeeta2826 Even if that is true it would still be 6 because there's north America, south America, Europe + Asia, Africa, Australia, and then antartica
Here in Brazil we make fun of US gringos for being dumb, but I didn't know it was that serious. I laughed with hand on my conscience, because that's funny and worrying at the same time.
just gotta say both you and your editor are doing such an AMAZING job with your videos lately!!! they’re always fun but they keep getting better and better. got me giggling and shit😭
I'm old and don't fit into this generation. But I will play devils advocate here... People get nervous with a camera in their face and won't question the questions. Like which state is Utah in... As a Canadian (yeah, we're a country. Mostly.) I know that Utah is a state, so I'm sure these kids do too. But the way it was worded was a trick, and cameras make you nervous. They used to do a show called Talking to Americans, where a Canadian would interview Americans on the street with similar questions about Canada. It was hilarious, but a little part of me felt bad for laughing because again, if you ask a trick question and they are under pressure... I can't say I wouldn't look stupid myself. Also, I want to have hope for the future. Edit: I watched the rest of the video. I am... Struggling to continue to defend them, and I no longer have hope for the future.
Yeah you can find a fuzzy version of it on YT. Rick Mercer is still great... I love the one where the 9 year old proves he's more intelligent than his mother lol
Yeah I've been on one of these roadside interviews and it did not go well lol. I panicked so much i said a stupid answer. But it was more of an opinion type interview though, not a q and a one which would be easier to answer
the sad thing is that there are some states that completely educate their students and other states that don’t. curriculum in the United States varies from county to county, let alone state to state. it’s not the same everywhere. i knew the answers to all of these things, but my parents were super particular with where we lived, where i want to school, and which classes i took
This reminds me of that time my freshman high school teacher tried to trip me up when I was the only one in the class who knew we have 100 Senators and nine Supreme Court Justices by asking me how many Representatives we have. Without a beat I spit out 435 and was afraid he was going to boot me from the class. Instead, he just started to grade me on a higher level then everyone else in the class. This was NOT the first time I learned about how "The Curve" is mean to the students who actually pay attention in class, retain information, and study. To be fair, his gentle harshness and pushing on my writing is the reason why friends asked me to edit their papers from high school through college, through grad school, and into the working world. Everyone rejoices when they get less red pen.
I took a history class my freshman year in college, and was shocked by how little people new about these basic questions in the video. My professor was hardcore and made us learn all the geography and history dates for the exams though, so hopefully it actually stuck.
Honestly history class for me was a blur during middle school, and what i ended up making through high school. I feel like i learn way more valuable and like shocking/heart breaking stuff on my own. My school sugar costed shit, avioded stuff, i felt like some stuff we really didn't need to spend months on but yet we would spend what? maybe a month at most even less time on the holocaust and other very important events in our timeline...

I'm always cautious to believe some of these quiz in the street vids because some of them are edited intentionally to make them look stupid - cutting in answers for other questions. New editor Joe, you did an outstanding job 👏 This video was edited to perfection. And while I always love Dylan roasting himself on screen, the addition of someone else also subtly roasting him via edit really elevates the content to a new level for me. I rate this video 7/3 continents.

Even I knew the answers and I don't even live in the US😅
Fellow gen z asian here (why does introducing yourself like this just feel ridiculous and awkward lol) I agree this exist and I partly hate it.

It's what I call "serotonin shot" content, which is fine in moderation but I feel that's all they get anymore!

for the continents: the answer will be different depending on which country you're from; many countries learn that there are 6 continents, US citizens (for example) learn that there are 7, because they separate the america by "the americaS" (north and south) and a lot of countries just know about americA, the whole continent divided by 3 subregions (north, central and south)

I'd rather read a book about how high schoolers acted when Dylan was in high school than however the heck they act now.
the sad thing is that there are some states that completely educate their students and other states that don’t. curriculum in the United States varies from county to county, let alone state to state. it’s not the same everywhere. i knew the answers to all of these things, but my parents were super particular with where we lived, where i want to school, and which classes i took
