Fun fact: when the author of the book sent it to his publisher they said it was way too scary for kids. So he proved that it wasn’t because he read it to his daughter and she begged him to finish it.
Fast forward to when she is an adult and it turns out that she was completely terrified and only begged him to finish because she had to know how it ended.
Actually his daughter would go to him with stories about witches taking her mom away and playing games to get her back and her dad wrote it. They moved and he continued it for his 2nd daughter. To prove the book wasnt scary the editor's daughter would read it and say it wasnt scary just cuz she wanted to know what was gonna happen next
I mean fear isnt necessarily a bad emotion for children to experience. Teaching them that it's okay to be afraid or learning that fear as a response to a piece of media that is supposed to make you afraid can also be entertaining is a good thing. Look at early disney films. I cried my eyes out watching Beast get stabbed by Gaston and almost die, same with watching mufasa get thrown off a cliff by his own brother. But I still rewatched those movies over and over as a kid because of how good they were.

Exactly, out of all the horror/scary movies I’ve seen Coraline is the scariest. The amount of fear that I got just by watching this video was insane. Probably bad that it is disguised as a kids movie since it scared me so badly as a child.

I mean most children stories were originally horror stories. All fairytales are dark it’s just Coraline is based more in reality with it’s themes of predation and escapism rather than the more cartoonish route other film adaptations have of these stories so you feel more uneasy watching the film. But I freaking love movies like this for that reason bro. Kids are people just like us and they feel fear just like us. Not showing fear in books or movies for kids isn’t really protecting them as much as people think since you’re not helping them navigate or understand these feelings. These books and films allow kids to experience fear in an fun but age appropriate way and I just don’t get why so many people are put off by it most of the time.

The movie was a great adaptation of the book, but one scary detail from the book that wasn't fully portrayed here was how the tunnel connecting the two worlds was pulsating like a living being, very likely the intestine of a monster that even the Other Mother was afraid of. And every time Coraline crosses the tunnel, it knows 😰
but why did the tunnel change from a tunnel you'd see at a play house to one thats as dry and dusty as my grandma. Maybe it was related to Coraline's perception of the world. When she believed it was a happy place, better than her reality, the tunnel was bright and colourful but when she found out the truth it also revealed its true form, as a tunnel leading to her doom?
Also how the other mother said she used to shove her own mother back in her grave whenever she crawled out or sum
Another aspect of the book left out was when the other father had his eyes ripped out and was stuck in the basement as a sack of flesh that chased after coraline. Kind of glad it was left out haha

A detail that stuck with me is how Coraline sings her real father's song "twichy witchy girl" while she's feeling scared of the other mother. It shows how, after all, she connects the "boring" parents with safety
In the book, her parents aren’t so blatantly mean to her like they are in the movie (especially the mother). They’re politely dismissive, which I find to be very good writing in the terms of a child’s point of view.She thinks they just don’t want to play with her. In reality, her parents love her, and are trying to give her activities to preoccupy the day, but they also have to work. Thus, the Other Mother’s constant attention being so appealing. The grass is greener and all that. If you’ve ever been two parents working at home during summer vacation, it looks about the same as the book portrays it. The movie is quite a bit harsher on the mother, to set you up for how great the Other Mother seems to be.

@@paristiger there's no wybie and no doll so in the book Caroline is doing everything on her own. I think there was also something about the neighbors like they didn't all have those little performances or something but it's just way darker since Caroline is alone.
fun facts: Wybie was never in the book. He was added because Coraline talks a lot to herself but it was changed to her talking to a real person.
Also, the other father's song was foreshadowing that she was the beldam's target and the doll was spying on her.

It's important to understand that the story is Coralines way of seeing her parents and surroundings. Subjective perception. Coraline sees her new home as being boring, colorless and her parents are working hard cause of their deadlines while she just wants fun. Afterwards she sees more colors and has a kinder understanding of everyone she met. Including her parents. So they were not meant for us to see how shitty they are, but to feel for Coralines reaction and emotions.
Also we're looking at a very stressful period of time. They've just moved, they had an accident with the car and the moving truck, and their deadlines for work are coming up

Coraline's parents are writers almost at a deadline, and had just moved. It's not that they don't love her, they're exhausted. That's why we see them give her more attention when they've turned it in.
Yeah so many people miss this point. Coraline isn't a neglected child. It's just a few days where they had to focus. They're tired and they moved. The mom was wearing a brace. She must had an accident. It's not ideal but it's reality. Coraline acts like a child who is used to getting attention and her Dad cooking her better food. Which means they usually are present it's just in the moment. The other mother makes the judgment that she must be a neglected child whose parents don't love her enough. But that dosnt seem to be true. And that's why she can't get to Coraline.
@silverkyre Yea it seems like the parents were forced to move after the accident (Coraline states in the movie "it wasn't my fault you hit that truck!" to which her mom replies "I never said it was"). So they have a lot going on- a deadline closing in, a medical emergency after a car crash, lack of income, and probably a rushed move. RIP the parents

I think too, so much of this film is influenced by Coraline’s perspective of a situation. She’s mad at her parents and sad about moving - so she sees them as not caring about her. She’s upset about losing her friends so Whybe seems annoying. She doesn’t like the house so the neighbors seem creepy.
I mean, that's understandable and realistic, I suppose, but let's not act like understanding and empathizing with your children when they're also in a stressful situation(one that the parents caused by moving her somewhere she is unfamiliar with, uprooting her from her established life, friends, and probably extended family, and then they become distant due to not meeting deadlines and having a job that is making them both so stressed and exhausted, something that should be considered as a factor when it comes to how your child will be raised and how bad an enviornment both of them are creating for her by having those jobs), and not helping your kid adjust to their new, unfamiliar life and house is still being a bad parent. If you and especially if you AND your partner don't have well paying jobs, that create insane stressful times, you probably shouldn't be starting a family. Get a dog, don't make a child. They still suck. One could argue that maybe they're trying their best, but a lot of the times, someone's "best," is still half-assed and them still being inattentive, unproductive, and distant.

You know there is some interesting details:
1. The Other mom trying to be perfect in everything. And it’s even affect on her look: while Caroline’s mother have nose, that look a little bit to the left, the other mom have perfect, looking straight nose.
2. Mister Bobinsky have a medal ”To the participant of the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant”
3. Seeds from the beginning of the movie, that we see when Caroline put they on the window is the same plants that Other Mother used to make garden look like Caroline.
4. In the end of movie we can clearly see that garden is actually is face of the Other Mom, which means that she actually existed in real world about a 150 ago.
Or, the Pink Palace is just the outside, inviting looking cover for the entrance to the other world, like the door of a trapdoor spider web looking like dirt. The Beldam's face is in the garden because the house is an extension of her influence, even if she didn't build it herself.
I did a play of Coraline when I was in middle school, and I remember thinking, “should we be doing this?” Cause the story and tone of the play was so frickin creepy. A girl in my class actually had to sit out a scene cause she was so disturbed after acting out the souls, cause like those are the trapped souls of CHILDREN. Plus we were literal children at the time, and our drama teacher played the other mother. Having an adult voice the other mother irl is traumatizing. To this day I still remember weird ass details about the script, like the rats upstairs, the skeleton hand following coraline into the real world to get the key back while she sleeps…
Anyway, this story is WILD
Well... There are school plays that did Little Red Ridinghood and Hansel and Gretel and both stories ALSO have child predator villains BTW...

@@deeefnne The cat goes behind the Pink Palace post sign, but doesn't appear on the other side, he completely disappears, something he could only do (as far as we know) in the other world. You can't see it perfectly in this video because there's a small cut, but it''s there! This doesn't necessarily mean Coraline is still in the other world tho, as it's always night there, however it does raise questions as to what exactly the cat can do and what its intentions were throughout the movie, specially when allowing Coraline to drop the key down the well, which as Dylan guessed correctly, is another portal to the other world.

Interesting that the main message was not to distrust creepy strangers who act very kind to you and are too good to be true. Because they almost always are: they want something in return for their kindness. This is what predators and abusers do to children.
this movie was such a cautionary tale of how predators would do so much to entice victims and lure them in, especially going after people in vulnerable situations
To me it was more a commentary to appreciate the ordinary things in life. And that bravery isn’t just blind courage…it’s about when you’re scared, and you do the thing anyway.

More on the end of(esp from a child’s perspective) getting lots of these big perfect things in abundance, even just like the giant complicated meals she ate with the other family. The thing here is that in our current real lives, the things we need that feel so out of reach are much different than hers might be(young child, animated movie, middle class, came out a while ago). While I would wish for safety, housing, healthcare, food, which are basic necessities, Coraline/the audience within her age and situation by the narrative would idealize things like cake all the time or getting lots of toys to play with(this isn’t to diminish the ages and intents of kids, but what the audience might be getting assumed of them-also these are unnuanced, simple examples). It’s not realistic that we will experience/get those things all the time, and so to wish for it for example, would make it matter less when you do get it or make it less enjoyable. It’s not really the best example, but it’s more on the view of appreciating life’s little moments. /gen

One of the things I love about this movie is how the physical features of the characters are true but exaggerated.
As a data analyst who works in consulting, I've met Coraline's father. His features and posture are truthfully only slightly exaggerated. This is the posture of a programmer/code monkey.
I also find it an interesting commentary on how, in childhood, we exaggerate details due to object permanence still developing.
Like, this whole movie is about how an only child named Coraline didn't get as much attention as she usually would for maybe a month during a stressful move and a crucial time for her parents' business; so in her mind, her parents are cruel and awful and everything is different and terrible.
All details in this story are exaggerated by the imaginative mind of a bored child who has no real sense of time.
Anyways, I went off on a tangent when I just wanted to comment on programmers' posture. lol
Fun fact. The studio that makes these movies (Boxtrolls, Coraline, Missing Link, ParaNorman) is called Laika and it is run by Thomas Knight, the son of the Nike founder Phil Knight. the thing with this movie is that it basically shows how someone can completely misinterpret a relationship. from coraline's pov her parents were dismissive and didn't care about her, while other mother was attentive, caring, loving. but the reality is that her real parents were busy with work and just needed some time without shenanigans and interruptions so they could get it done, and once they did, their attention was back on their daughter, while other mother was only loving because she wanted something from coraline

I feel like the other world's characters were just reflections of the real world's characters. Both mothers were controlling and didn't care how they hurt Coraline as long as they accomplished their goals. The fathers cared about Coraline and liked to spend time with her, but were victims in their own right from the mothers and didn't stop the abuse. And the Wybies obviously knew the truth but were forced into silence for one reason or another, but they both were there for Coraline. Coraline wanted loving, attentive parents more than anything. Little did she know that the other world's parents were more extreme versions of her own, even if they did give her attention and love. Even with Wybie, she thought that she wanted him to stay quiet but in reality he was loyal and would've been able to help her sooner if she didn't wish he was different. Coraline's parents weren't good parents, they just seem like the better option compared to the other ones lol.

this movie traumatized me as a child, but i loved it wholeheartedly. my parents are A LOT like coraline’s (like, really, it’s creepy the little details they have in common) and they were always busy. i never dared to read the book cause it’s even darker, but i’ve been told it’s really great.
For anyone that may not have known or ever noticed, but Wybie says his grandmother doesn’t like him going over to the pink palace, he mentions his grandmother is the one that found the coraline doll and her sister went missing when they were children.
One of the children that Coraline saved their eyes to release their soul, was the long lost sister of Wybies grandmother. That’s why she didn’t like the pink palace, knew about the dolls and they showed her briefly at the end of the movie and Coraline says “I have so much to tell you.” because the grandmother knows what goes on in that house because of her sister and what happened with the other mother.
but does that mean the coraline doll was a good thing? I thought it was used by the other mother to spy on her in the real world
@@hinnakoto Yes, the doll is very much a spy for the other mother. Not a good thing lol. Wybie's grandmother recognized the style of doll since her sister was also a victim of the other mother and instructs Wybie not to go to the pink palace for that reason.

So, I used to have the same opinion as Dylan in regards of Coraline's parents, but Cinema Therapy made me realize they aren't really abusive towards her. Everything about Coraline points towards a kid that is used to have loads of attention of both her parents, but they can't really afford to give her that at this moment because they are just moving to a new house, with a tight job schedule and really stressed out. It is a situation that most kids (and parents) can actually relate. The fact that everything seems so much better in the end is because both Coraline (someone who wasn't really fond of her new house and neighborhood) and her parents are actually making a effort.
It’s not just the fact that they don’t give her attention, it’s also how they handle it. They were treating her like she was a parasite that was bothering them. Not like a child that you to reassure that you love them, but you can’t give them the attention they need atm. You feel me?

I always think of Inside Out as an alternate version of this movie bcs it starts with the same premises, a little girl and her parents moving into a new less than ideal house far away and having a hard time with a prevalent struggle that comes with it moving. Getting settled in a new place, your parents being stressed and then wanting to escape when both could have been avoided with some patience
Both girls are originally from the Midwest (Coraline from Michigan, Riley from Minnesota)
Both move into an old Victorian-style house that they're less than impressed with
Both have some tension within their family that delays unpacking from the move
And both movies feature glowing orbs in some significance.
You know you're a grownup when you realize that Coraline's parents are trying their hardest to stay afloat despite the sudden moving, accident and a deadline, with their daughter feeling neglected being just a side-effect of all of that.

@@gooodmorning4526 Yeah she is being emotionally neglected, that's coz her parents are on overload themselves, they don't really have enough time or energy for basics to give her some of it right now. I am not exactly happy about some of the things they were saying to her, still, I think this is a forgivable instance, parents are still human, its kind of hard to be nice when everything's so crappy. Doesn't mean it still doesn't affect the kid, doesn't mean I can blame the parents. Sometimes things just suck, for no fault of anyone. That's why its so important to make time for Coraline and pay her much needed attention now that things are more in hand, so that she understands that period of neglect was a one-time thing, product of circumstances, not a reflection of how they feel about her. I think childhood is kind of like a tapestry, where there are many different coloured threads woven together, as long as the bright outweighs the drab by 3-4 times, the overall impression would be good. One instance of neglect is not really enough to classify it as child neglect, it becomes a problem when it is constant and consistent for years, as well as accompanied by other situations such as constant fighting, some kind substance abuse, or unsafe home environment.

They were still assholes. Sure, they are human and they can make mistakes but every single interaction they had with her was negative, that was no side effect that was just bad parenting.
In the parents’ defense, it was shown that they had *just* moved and they already had a deadline for work. Her parents were *super busy* for like 3 days. They needed a few days to focus on their work to meet the deadline and their teenager just refused to let up at all. Based on the ending when her parents say they’ve completed their work and theyre a little happier, we have to assume that they were just in “deadline mode” and Coraline was treating it like they had completely abandoned the thought of raising her.
I believe gaiman wrote it like that because it was him sympathizing with his kids when he had writing deadlines
I feel like there’s two sides to this. For sure we see the worst side of Coralines parents here, but even taking into account what situation they’re in, it’s still not really okay what they’re doing in my opinion. Coraline isn’t a teen - she’s 9 in the film - too young to understand the pressure her parents are under. Yes they just moved and that’s very stressful - but Coraline also just moved, and as far as we can tell she’s far away from her old network and has no way to contact old friends (both because she’s young and because this seems to be before cellphones were standard). That’s very stressful and scary for a child - that’s what Inside Out is all about (and Riley is like 12, and her parents in that film are wayyy better at handling the situation, even if they also make mistakes). It isn’t Coralines job to take all that on and act like everything is fine - ideally her parents would at least communicate with her about her feelings and their needs. Actually I think she takes it all very well for a kid in a new environment with no friends and no family that wants to talk to her - even if it as just for 3 days, those are 3 very important days… the new place might get soured for her if her first association with it is boredom and loneliness. Her mom could’ve realised that she was having a bad time, and bought her those gloves that she really wanted to show that she cared - it wouldn’t have taken away from her work. Coralines problem isn’t that her parents are stressed, but that they don’t see her or her needs, which is why the primary thing the other world does for her is paying attention to her wants and showing that she’s seen. From what we see in the film, I don’t think her parents are that great of parents, even in the good times, but they aren’t evil or anything - just normal people with flaws. Idk that’s my interpretation anyway… long form lol - I don’t do short comments😂

I can understand the parents reasoning for being buys bc it’s a deadline and moving. I can also understand Coraline being bored bc she moved away from her friends and doesn’t have any close friends atm. She met Wybie but wasn’t a huge fan of him at first. You can understand both sides and why Coraline seems annoying to her parents and why Coraline is bothering them a lot
I get that perspective, but as an only child that got treated like this most of the time, it's not ok. You don't have siblings to entertain one another, you just moved so you have no friends (I also moved very frequently), and it didn't seem like school was in at the moment. It becomes an isolating world in this situation. And yes, the parents were busy, but they also have the majorly important job of being parents and need to learn to balance the both or she will grow up with attachment/trust/abandonment issues like me.
I like to think the movie is a metaphor for "stranger danger", since Coraline doesn't question people that seem trusting (they look like her parents) and who "care" and "love" her more than her own family. They promised her quality time and a future just as fun until she doesn't question it. Luckily she's wise enough, unlike the prior kids who didn't see the warning signs. The root of the issue is she doesn't feel loved enough (at least until she sees the comparison) and seeks it elsewhere. Lesson is; make sure to spend quality time with your kids/family even if its for a few short minutes of "what is it that you want to show me?" in stead of "I'm too busy to bother with you right now."

I really like the way coraline is structured in the sense that the beginning and middle and end all have very different vibes like they’re different films almost and it helps take us on the journey with Caroline from how she felt at the start(bored but curios)to the middle (fun) then to the end(nightmare fuel ominous ending) absolute chefs kiss to the author cos the structure of it alone helps to understand coraline and that’s why despite it being scary kids dig it like I always temper watching the ending for the first time and the way it happens so suddenly helps you feel that cold snapped back to reality feeling that coraline does in that moment (joined by the pathetic phallacy of winter) just so good 10/10
The hardest scene they had to film for this movie was the mice circus performance. If you know anything about stop motion, you know it's ridiculously hard to pull off, especially like this.

Dylan, i think the message behind coraline is to not take anything for granted. Her parents in the beginning didn't hate her but they had just moved in and were really busy and also a little short on money so they didn't have much time for her at the time. Later on the mother realises she'd been a bit harsh with her and gets her the gloves she wanted. So in reality they did love her but were in a stressful state, love the Caroline segmentss
That was the other mothers downfall. The other children must have been actually neglected and lives bad lives if they were desperate enough to sew the buttons into their eyes. The Other Mother thought Coraline was being neglected. But she's clearly a kid who is used to getting attention and is loved. So no matter how magical and cool the other world is she's not actually willing to trade. Her mom had been in some sort of accident and they just moved and needed a few days of concentrating just on the book I'm order to have money and provide for her and them. And it's just in those few days.
I think that the message is to be careful with adults that are giving you gifts though you don't know them, cause they can have other motives.
I also think that the message (though maybe clearer in the boon where the real parents treat her better) is that sometimes parents have their own thing to do but it doesn't mean they don't love you.

The main message of the book/movie is that bravery isn't being fearless -- it's being very afraid and doing it anyway -- which is such a good take

In the book, coraline recalls a time where her dad got attacked by wasps where she and him were playing. After they got away, coraline realized she left a toy behind and her dad went back to grab it. The book highlighted that her dad was fearless protecting coraline but that wasnt him being brave. Being brave was going back and being completely terrified that he might be attacked by wasps again (aka confronting your fears)

Something I love about Coralines welcome dinner scene is the writing on her cake, if you take note of the fact that the ‘o’ in ‘home’ has a double loop i think it was in it, which means something along the lines of a lie, but it is not in the ‘welcome’ so it implys she is welcome there but she isn’t home
“this is what happens when you don’t love your children enough, they become freaks” - possibly the most relatable words from dylan’s mouth
i think the sort of dull relationship with her parents really helps the message, actually. instead of it being a home alone situation where she realizes it's not so bad in her reality, (this theme is there but i don't think it's the main one) the focus is on coraline's developing independence and courage. she was scared, her parents neglected her, but she still found the resolve to not only save herself but her parents and the ghost children. it reminds me a lot of spirited away- both mcs are young girls who must go through a bizarre and unpredictable journey which matures them and helps them define themselves apart from the environment provided by their parents. it's an imperfect message because children shouldn't HAVE to go through those things, but they do. in the same way, i admire when parents are portrayed through media as imperfect and flawed with kids who then have to take on responsibility for the wellbeing of the family. it presents heroes to people who can relate to that and can be really empowering. in general i just love this movie (book is better and creepier too) so i could talk about it for ages. it's a really interesting piece of media once you start dissecting it

Man, imagine being a screenwriter and trying to convince a studio exec that this movie where "a demon lady intends to lure a girl into her world, and eventually sew buttons into her eyes and then eat her body leaving behind nothing but a soul trapped in the universe" as a *kids* movie.
Neil gamen got it published as a kids book because the terrified kids they tested it on wanted to hear how it ends. The publishers initially thought it was too scary.

Words cannot describe how happy I am that he reacted to Coraline, it's one of my favorite comfort movies. Theres so much little detail in the film that you wont catch unless you watch it a second time. Like when the Other Mother says that they like mud, and lightning strikes outside of the window, the lighting is in the shape of her needle claw hand. And the cake that says "welcome home" in calligraphy when there is two loops in the circle it normally indicates a lie, in the word "welcome" there is one loop, but in the word "home" there is two. Indicating that she is welcome, but she isnt home. Theres just so much to this movie, and I can talk about it all day

Coralline is my favourite movies so here are some cool little details about the movie I love:
In the beginning, wybie says that the well is « so deep, if you feel in in the middle of the day and looked up, you’d see a sky full of stars » this is because the well is another portal to the other world like the door is and like the other entry points the cat uses. It’s always nighttime in the other world, and in the shots where you can see down the well it looks exactly like the tunnel. This is also why at the end you see the cat go into the other world since coraline got rid of the key and the hand in the well, accidentally sending them right back to her.
The song the dad sings is a warning to Coraline, because all the characters the mother creates actually truly care about her the way their supposed to like the dad and wybie
On the cake it says “welcome home” with a double loop on the o in home. Double loops in a lowercase letter o symbolise that the writer is lying. There’s no double loop in welcome because she truly is welcome but she isn’t truly home.
Wybie’s grandmother knew about the other world and the other mother through her sister, and that is why she forbade wybie to go to the pink palace. Additionally, that is why she never rents the house to families with kids as wybie says in the beginning, but since wybie got to the age at which the other mother starts taking children, she rented the course to coraline’s family to protect him.
Every time coraline comes back you can see the mother getting progressively more thin and spidery, her neck gets longer and even her clothes get darker and more spikey.
There is a theory that the other mother was the original owner of the house, because in the real world the garden in the backyard is shaped like her face, just like it was shaped like coraline’s in the other world.
There is also a theory that the painting of the sad blue boy in the real world is a painting of the other mother’s son, because in the other world, the painting is happy and even after the power starts weakening and things go back to their original creepy forms, the painting never changes and stays happy.
There are more but I’ll leave it here haha

One of the children that Coraline saved their eyes to release their soul, was the long lost sister of Wybies grandmother. That’s why she didn’t like the pink palace, knew about the dolls and they showed her briefly at the end of the movie and Coraline says “I have so much to tell you.” because the grandmother knows what goes on in that house because of her sister and what happened with the other mother.

Some fun facts! The movie is pretty true to the book! Although some things are even creepier in the book. For instance, the bug, candy, and vegetation theme isn't really in the book.

And the other Miss Spink and Miss Forcible are like...simply melded together inside some weird cocoon, as opposed to just being like...taffy in a candy wrapper. (Not that I like either version better than the other.) /END SPOILERS
Wybie actually isn't in the book! The book really follows Coraline's POV, and they knew, for the movie, there was going to be trouble when it came to seeing how Coraline is feeling about things. She's a lonely kid, so she mostly internalizes things, which is fine in book format, because we can just read about how she's thinking and feeling. In a movie, though, we'd have to see and hear this. So they gave Coraline someone she could sort of bounce her thoughts off of.
The voice of the cat is interesting. In the book, I do believe that it's described as a male voice, and while it is unlike Coraline's actual voice, it is apparently the voice that she thinks in.

My mom hated me watching this bc of how scary it was, she thought I would get nightmares. but i absolutely adored this film as a kid, and it never once gave me nightmares

I first watched it with my sister and brother-in-law when I was like 9 years old and they called me ridiculous for being scared as heck after it, they even wanted to watch it a second time in 3d after that... like excuse me?... nah, me rather jumpin off a roof than watching that in 3d

Wow for me it was the opposite I watched this movie alone at night when I was very little and I was so scared I couldn’t even sleep on my own anymore, I couldn’t even finish the movie lol
I had nightmares when I watched it as a kid, so I was kind of disappointed when I watched it again recently and didn't find it scary 😂 Didn't find the sweet feelings from childhood you know
Fun fact Many publishers believed the story to be too scary for children, and since Neil's (the author of the book) daughter was too young to read it he had one of his coworker’s daughter’s read it. She approved the book and it was published. Come to find out, years later Gaiman talked to his co-workers daughter about the book. She actually thought the book was terrifying, but lied to her mom about it since she needed to know what would happen next. Imagine if she didn't lie about it? This masterpiece would have been still hidden in only a book not an adaptation as well 😭😭😭

How old was she? I mean I’m not easy scared so at 13 I watched almost the entire horror section on Netflix before bed during summer break. So like at 13 I could watch this but at 8 I would probably be a bit scared, do you know how small children this movie was for?
@@ixagonczi I'm not sure tbh. I do know that Coraline herself is 9 years old. So I'm guessing this movie is targeted at 9 years old children and above but now that you mention it, it is is quite a scary movie for a 9 year old to take in 😭
Working in the youth section of the library, I think this is so true of a lot of children. Give them a good story and they will do anything to finish it, even if it's scary. Plus, a lot of kiddos do like scary books.
@@malaksayed2457 Yeah most 9 year olds would probably be sacred, it feels like it more for 12-15 year olds, especially the book.
