  • I install an aftermarket Radio in my 1992 dodge D250 1st gen diesel using a JVC KD-X255BT head unit i purchased from Crutchfield.
I figured out all the wiring and include a complete wiring diagram of the first gen dodge diesel truck radio wiring, and build a wiring harness that plugs into the factory truck harness.
I also show you how to solder and use heat shrink.
Possible would be the same for the W250, D150, W350.

Very nice job. I'm doing the same on my '93 D250. Front speakers are in, finishing up the rear speakers today (ditching the old 4x10s with their cheap plastic boxes and putting in 6x9s in proper wooden enclosures). Still waiting on the head unit to arrive (Sony DSX-GS80). Your video and the wiring diagram are a big help. Thanks!

Thanks for the diagram, saved me a bunch of time. When I got the truck someone had removed the radio and just cut all the wires. I now have all 4 speakers working in my 92 1st gen,

Great quality video, thank you for going into detail for each of the wires, and options you used for solving the ground issue.

Thanks for the details. I just replaced my factory stereo in my 1990 w350 and only have the left rear speaker working. Will tear it apart and use your harness layout to try to get the others working. Also purchased from Crutchfield.

I used that same adapter kit from Crutchfield (Metra 99-6229), and while it was a perfect fit for the single din radio I bought, I found that the adapter plate flexes inward on the dash when I press the radio power button. Makes the install seem flimsy and loose. So I am trying a different brand. I saw reviews on Amazon as well where others tried that kit and didn't like it.

If I wanted to switch a 2nd gen Dodge radio with a 1st gen Dodge radio how would I go about it? I am asking this because I have a 82 Dodge Ram W350.

Did you have to buy a adapter for the radio to fit in the slot. If so where did you get it. Thanks

Yes, I believe I got everything on crutchfield.com. They are pretty good about getting you all the right install parts for the job.

@@MuddyBeards4X4 I agree, Crutchfield is great. They're including the adapter and the specific wiring harness for my truck for free with my head unit order. Their support staff is also very helpful. They really know what "customer service" is.

I wouldn't recommend ever using those wire splices, like used on the ground wire. They tend to cause more problems later. I prefer to give everything it's own ground anyway.

I just got a first gen 1990 W150, wiring should all be the same for the radio. Any idea why my radio would not be getting power but all wires are intact? And do you have any good sources for wiring diagrams. Thanks!
