      Oh man, if there's one thing I've learned from posting this video, it's that I don't know much about aluminum. I'm from Michigan, everything I learned about magnets was from these two fellow-Michiganders: th-cam.com/video/8GyVx28R9-s/w-d-xo.html

      Note, if you DO want those magnets you put into your shelf to do something, you could always replace that piece with a bit of angle iron instead of aluminum. Seriously though, like this bench for a lot of reasons. I'm just trying to think through if there's a way I could enhance it with bench dogs and woodworking vices

      The metal Jordan used isn't the aluminum he showed in the Home Depot shot. Note the crisp 90° corner in the Home Depot picture. It appears to be steel, judging from the few sparks it made on the disc sander. I've seen plenty of steel bent in that wide radius to be "sort of" angle iron but have never seen aluminum stock made that way.

    I'm new to woodworking and my first project will be a chicken coop that I'm starting this weekend. Then I'm moving to reorganize my shed and your videos with the free plans are a god send! I relate to you and your sense of humour. And now that i know YOU'VE GOT A BAND AND PLAY BASS! I mean, now I just HAVE to build this!

    • @withJordanFrank
      @withJordanFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      YEAH BABY. Uh..... does this mean you play bass? Either way, thrilled you're embarking on this journey! This build isn't the easiest but it is doable, I promise. Take your time, don't cut off your hands (particularly helpful in bass playing) and in the end it will be worth it. You'll have built something that will hone some new skills for you and give you a large, practical tool that will make everything you build after much easier. Best of luck, feel free to reach out with questions!

      Welcome to the club Michael, and thank you. I think that's one of the things I've come to appreciate most about woodworking, is that there's typically a way around a problem/mistake, and it's really rewarding to figure it out. Also when I'm running saws I can't hear my kids, so that's another great thing about it. :)

    For me, the best parts are the folding shelf for miter saw, and the end shelf for additional devices as needed. The table saw and extension was cool, but the saw can be standing right next to the bench if needed. Love it!

    Thanks again for this whole series, the plans, and the ideas that went into it. You've given me lots of ideas for improvements I can make to my bench.
    My only request is more! I'd love to see a video showing how you made those tool holders that you had on the French cleat wall - the same ones that lock into the adjustable shelf.
    You obviously put a lot of work and care into your designs and videos. Thank you for both. The magic wasn't bad either.

But you got my mind working on what I can do with some of my other tools. It is hard to start woodworking at 60yrs but the time I spend is priceless. Jordan, thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I really enjoyed the education that is part of them. I have been searching the internet for plans that I could adapt to my needs. I have the back half of a one car garage. The other half being the laundry area. I will be building a modified version of your table, leaving out that storage area t o cut down the length. I have a Dewalt DWE7480 and a 1/2" Ryobi plunge router and a trim router. Miter saw will be later this year.
    I noticed that your power cables required a tight bend to plug them into the power strip. I think I will look into mounting my power strip face down to avoid the tight bend. Just a thought.
    Thanks again & your right . . . I can do this!!!!!

    • @withJordanFrank
      @withJordanFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love it Red! You can definitely do this!! A few people have commented on the power strip, and I think you're right, but it's kind of a toss up because it will relieve the bend on the tools you have permanently plugged in, but the ones you add as you're using them might be harder to plug and unplug and also might bend in the other direction. I don't know, it's worth trying though. Good luck!

    Near 40
    From Chicago
    Play drums
    Enjoy woodworking
    Have very little room for woodworking
    Am left-handed
    Have a mole I should almost certainly get checked out by a physician
    And Brew beer sometimes occasionally.

      sans band these days, although needing to get on stage again. Just jam with old buds occasionally in the meantime. I currently live in Streamwood but grew up in Elmwood Park so I'm familiar with your area. There's a small cafe in Oak Park on Lombard Ave called 'The Buzz Cafe' that I used to play shows at ages ago. --I also went to a school dance at OPRF* and jumped on the Harlem Green Line to head downtown. Now you know the extent of everything I know about Oak Park.
      *As a HS student myself (this seemed rather important to clarify).
      And hey, if Q-WW is on ever on hiatus and youre in the mood to play shit covers for dollars, let me know!

    Jordan, do you have your wen planer on the removable shelf system (opposite table saw). Its a heavy planer, just wondering how the shelf would hold up to that much weight. thanks

    • @withJordanFrank
      @withJordanFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question and NO. I repeat NO: do NOT try to put a planer on a shelf like that. If I ever actually finish the video I've been meaning to put out I have a more detailed look at those shelves and they definitely can not hold that kind of weight. Also planers are too heavy for a weakling like me to be picking up and carrying around; I put mine on a low wheeled cart the minute I got it. I would have made it higher but I wanted it to fit under the shelves you're referring to.

  • @InTheLab3d

    What would you recommend as a modification for a sliding miter saw? just a wider fold out?

    • @withJordanFrank
      @withJordanFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ryan, yes, within reason. At least one brave soul who has attempted this build has run into that issue. If your saw is much bigger (and in particular Heavier) then you actually run the risk of it tipping your bench. I am aware of someone building folding out legs that stabilize the shelf. Personally, and I know this isn't an option for everyone, I think I would rather build a small stand for my saw than have it be that big a shelf off the back. Having said that you can definitely make it work. If you do move the saw off the bench I would still recommend keeping the folding self, because I use it all the time just to hold stuff. The face that it sits lower than the work surface is nice for throwing on your plans, pencils, rules, tape measures, etc, without interfering with your table saw or router

  • @carlwebinar1571
    @carlwebinar1571 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much for the build video series. I really like the bench you've made and I think it would be a really good starting point for one I'd do for my garage shop. Suggestion, next time you redo your extension table, instead of using a jig saw to remove the area where the angle iron bolt heads are, use a router bit from under neath to remove a recess area that won't be visible from the top.
    Question, so you have videos on how you made you french cleat machine tool holders (band saw, drill press, sander, etc.) for mounting on the bench and mounting on your wall?

    • @withJordanFrank
      @withJordanFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent suggestion on using a router instead of the jigsaw, thank you. And I am actually editing a little something right now that will include a closer look at those brackets. Stay tuned!

    1. To lighten the saw table extension more turn those rows of holes into slots
    2. What's your dust collector?
    3. If you posted a link to the fold up table brackets I missed that, what's the brand & P/N?
    Thanks. Subscribed.

    • @withJordanFrank
      @withJordanFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. I like that. Honestly if I had a CNC I'd use that space to put something really stupid carved into it, like a picture of a CNC or something. But lighter is good too
      2. It's a Shop Fox, one of the only wall-mountable ones that can do 120v. It's okay. It works well enough but when I added the cyclone the pressure dropped enough that it is kind of disappointing. But the barrel is a lot easier for emptying and I like that it catches bigger chips, so... I'm going to use it all till it dies then switch to something a bit bigger I think.
      3. Links to everything I used are on the free plans. 4. Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it!

  • @carlwebinar1571
    @carlwebinar1571 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I"m confused. If you used aluminum angle iron, why would you need to paint it to prevent rust and how would a rare earth magnet do anything for your connection to it from the extension table?

    • @withJordanFrank
      @withJordanFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re not confused, I was confused. Many people have politely pointed out that I don’t know anything about aluminum, and they’re correct. The good news is now I do, and yes, there’s no point in painting it or using magnets. Science!
