  • In this video I explain the ins and outs of my Mobile Flip-Top Workbench and what makes it so unique. Unfortunately, I built this three years ago and did not record a build video along the way. I did take a lot of pictures, so I use them throughout the video to explain what I did, along with some current video and even some 3D Renders to better explain the inside parts that you are unable to see from the outside. So, if you have a small workspace and are looking to save a ton of space, this may be the bench for you!
    I now realize I spelled "Rosin Paper" wrong as well, but it's too late at this point.

    I like the finished edges on the doors and drawer fronts. You're a woodworker so you have to practice your craft. Also, it's not uncommon in this work to demonstrate the skills of your craft in even the most utilitarian of builds. Remember, a hundred years from now someone is going to get possession of this thing and, if it's the right person, they will ponder the history of it's use made evident by it's scars of ages ago, and they will also admire it for the passion they can see was put into it by it's maker.

    This is an excellent video. I am very impressed with the animation, the descriptions, and how well-spoken you are. In terms of the engineering, I find that you are a lot like me, even after you have put something together, you are continually looking at how it could be better, more refined, and you're almost in the realm of doing it over again, just to find that you have more ideas.
    I'm also impressed with your choice of power tools. There is nothing wrong with WEN, and in almost every video I see, even when a shop is full of Festool, Shop Fox, and Grizzly, there is always the black and orange of WEN poking around. Cost to performance, you won't find much better, despite the rubbish I hear from YT Cowboys.

    Hi... First of all, don't apologize for not having filmed the build. I've built several things that I should have documented better and as I didn't I'm not "you-tubing" yet... I love the design, the graphics a brilliant (I assume a lot of effort went into creating those. I main modification I would make would be to recess the planer so that the outfeed table can be used there too. Also if you put a small chamfer around the edges of the tool sections that'll stop material getting caught using the outfeed table (Check out Woodwork Junkie's table). I'm going to give this a go (I need to upgrade the one I built from Woodwork Junkies). I hooked and subscribed. Keep up the great content

    • @RingsWorkshop
      @RingsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much, I like that chanfer idea for sure. Recessing the planet got tricky with making sure it was flat on top when it was down and the fliptop still functioning the same. I guess it would work if you made the pivot point lower and the bottom side much thicker.

      @wonderstud 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    G'day mate - there's a dozen different shades of genius in this design. I can't believe it didn't get more airplay. For the power, although it isn't as convenient as having a powered table you could have a pop up power board so you could at least have everything you're using plugged in at the same time. The woodshop junkies channel has a great pop up power board idea which uses gas lift and push-to-open cover. You might be able to slot it into that spare space!

    This video alone required me to subscribe. Guy, I'm 50-something DIY'er but I never would've thought of the cam lifter and the top locking mech. Those really are genius ideas. I'm slowly trying to build my workshop now - only into year 3 or 4 - and I'll definitely be stealing both those ideas for my personal bench.

    My thought is this bench is AWESOME!
    It has all the features I want in a mobile bench, and many of them I'd never otherwise have seen or thought of.
    It doesn't bother me that you didn't post a build video because your ideas are the important things and you showed/explained those well.
    Don't worry about "Rosen paper". I just figured I'd never heard of it, but I'd never heard of "rosin paper" either. So I learned even more from this than I suspected. ;)
    ETA:One way of keep stuff from rolling/sliding underneath the bench would be to attach a strip of ??? as a skirt reaching the floor.

    I like this. I would have made one in any of my previous houses since I have always had to work in a 2-car garage. However, my current house doesn't even have a garage, so I'm going to put up a 20 x 50 workshop, so I really don't need to save space like this. I'm going to design my shop so that I always have a large bench in the middle. But this is a good idea for some tools that I don't have to use very often.

    Did a similar caster method for my Harbor Freight workbench years ago, but mine I could easily lift by hand, and tuck a support to hold the casters down with my foot.... works great and like yours, no risk of movement at all on locking casters.

    Your ingenuity is extraordinary! I've been looking at flip top stands to make but I have a bunch of other tools that really don't warrant something so fancy. I was thinking about just leaving those on a shelf and moving them onto a work bench when I needed them, but my bench is always a cluttered mess. Having a designated spot around a bench seems like a much better use of space. Thanks for sharing your bench. It gives me a whole new perspective on making my own tool storage arrangement.
