Australian music is often not heard in other countries which is a shame. Cold Chisel is rock royalty here and its great for their sound to be spread about. Thank you for the reaction and your thoughts on one of my favourite bands.

Don Walker wrote this song about someone supporting a friend through an abortion. The song was about supporting a friend through such an emotionally charged time, not about the issue of abortion. I think this is why people could feel such emotion in this song even when not aware of the meaning in the song

Just listening to Cold Chisel Choir Girl. Don Walker’s amazing lyrics and Jimmy Barnes at his melodic best. For people that think all he ever did was scream need to go back and listen to these early albums before he had punished himself with years of alcohol and hard partying. This song written about abortion 40 years ago shows the emotional intelligence this band had that exceeds most of our lawmakers and politicians in the current day. Barnsey, short hair, unshaven, white shirt and beige suit, cheeky smile and amazing vocal control. Don Walker and Ian Moss with delicious piano, trademark licks and harmonies make this track a true masterpiece. If I could go back in time and see this band in this time.... 😊

Although I don't live in Australia any more, I have always been happy that I grew up there and got to experience 70s, 80s and 90s music. My child is growing up with a love of Aussie music, especially Cold Chisel. I agree Flame Trees would be another great choice, always brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. It is simply just one of those songs.

Choirgirl is written by the band member Don Walker (he plays the keyboard in the band). Choirgirl is written about pregnancy termination. It became a popular song not for just its great sound, but for a lot of people an emotional connection to the meaning. One of the best songs to come out of Australia

  • @CounterCultureVegan

That accent is Glaswegian. His name is Jimmy Barnes. The backbone of the early Australian Rock scene hails from immigrant youth who came to Australia with their families, many of whom settled in Elizabeth, South Australia. Jimmy was about 6 when he came here yet retained his Glasgow accent, as Elizabeth was mainly populated by the British and other Europeans who came to this land in search of a better life. Unfortunately, they had just brought all their problems with them but the music that was created was (in my opinion) a gift to the world. Cold Chisel did indeed start out in the '70s--1973 to be precise.

Cold Chisel - one of Australia's best. I have been in a pub and a cover band would start playing this and the whole dance floor would come to a halt, arms around everyone else and singing along and then cheering at the end. Its about supporting a woman during an abortion and the pain they were going through.

This is one of my favourite Cold Chisel songs (along with Flame Trees and Bow River, and Breakfast at Sweethearts). It’s the story and the emotion that gets me. And it’s just generally a good song, showcasing just how damn good a singer Jimmy is. He had a period where he just screamed everything (when he was an alcoholic), but before and after that, you really hear how talented he is. And he does have a great scream, no doubt. But it was overkill, I think, and you couldn’t hear the truly gorgeous rough blues and soul that his voice naturally has.
But this song is about a man supporting his female friend (just friend, not girlfriend) through an abortion. It makes no statement on whether or not it’s a good or bad thing as a concept, it’s just about supporting a friend when she’s having a really difficult time. It’s beautiful, I think. I wish there were more cross-gender friendships so close and supportive, to be able to get in there, support them when they’re alone and at their lowest.
It’s not a subject you’d expect a pub band to broach, but I think they did it in a lovely and touching way, and it’s one of the reasons why this is one of my favourite songs. That, and Jimmy’s perfect vocals.

It's a great song about a tragic subject and situation for a young girl to be in. At the time there were constant news reports about teen mothers, welfare payments and the rush to get young girls to rush to abort. It seemed the system cared nothing for the teen mother or the life of the unborn child it was about shame and cost. Cold Chisel performed the song almost as a love song to the lost innocence of the child mother and the unborn that would never be, makes this a tragic and beautiful thing from such ugly circumstances.

He does such a great cover of that song! It’s like his voice is just made for it. So much better than the Michael Bolton cover. Leagues ahead of that one! I think because he has more of the gravel that Percy Sledge has, whereas Bolton’s voice is too smooth.

Thank you and Kane for playing some Chisel. They are in our blood. I got a little emotional seeing Steve Prestwich.
    Please react to Flame Trees.
