It brings tears to my eyes to hear that finally
Our greatest Australian treasures are being
    Appreciated all over the world
    I truly believe
They were ahead of their time both of them
And that the music is still current today
I am proud to say that Australia has been fortunate to have
    Produced such original talent
I only hope that we don't lose our originality
    I'm especially happy
    For John Farnham
To be able to see these reactions
    he's simply the best ❤

Australian music in the 80s was killer, we had no idea how good we had it. Chisel, Farnesy, INXS, The Oils, Icehouse, The Angels, The Church, Paul Kelly, and many more. Incredible bands. When I met my wife in '95 (she's Irish, emigrated to Australia in 1981) she had never heard Cold Chisel. She knew Barnesy's solo stuff, but didn't know he was in a band before that. Imagine growing up without knowing Cold Chisel. After Paul Kelly, Don Walker is unquestionably Australia's greatest songwriter. I was surprised she didn't know them after the famous Countdown Awards where they smashed up the set, but somehow she'd missed that.

Barnesy also talks of his relationship with Farnham and in particular how the pair got horribly drunk during a video shoot for their hit, When Something is Wrong With My Baby.
“I drank two bottles of vodka and he drank a bottle of brandy,” Barnes says. “He was maggoted.”
After filming, a limousine drove Farnham to his house, about 30 minutes away.
“Then, an hour and a half after we had finished, we got a call from the limo driver saying John didn’t know where he lived,” Barnes says. “People think John is Mr Straight, but he’s full-on.”

I wasn't born in Australia, but when I moved here my cousin was kind of obsessed with John Farnham. I used to laugh it off, mostly because I was 14 and trying to be too cool. Never even took the time to listen to him. That was a long time ago, and when I finally grew up and developed a mature appreciation of music I came to understand just how astonishlingly good he is. And yeah, he is kind of known around the world, but not in a superstar way, not like Kylie or INXS or AC/DC. I knew who they were, but not Farnsey. He's a legend in Australia, rightly so, and it's so nice to see he can still get some surprise love from fans on the other side of the planet.

Just to give you an idea of just how good John Farnham was at his peak... He was asked to be the front man for Queen after Freddie Mercury passed away... He's THAT good and always WAS. He turned it down because he didn't want to go on long global tours as part of a band so instead decided to stay here at home and live the "quiet" life. Actually if you look at interviews with Glenn Wheatley, and even the LRB guys this may not be true. John wanted to work overseas and tried to break the OS market with little river band however he is a solo performer and working in a band didn’t work out for many reasons…. Which explains turning down Queen, HOWEVER as we all know Freddy was a bit of a one man show too when he wanted to be so it could have worked out.
On the flip side, ‘you’re the voice’ was popular in the UK and Europe and he did tour there at the time too

The best thing about John and Jimmy is how down to earth and humble they are. Both had life hardships, a tough childhood for Jimmy and John struggled with finding his place in the late 70's/early 80's music scene. Through all this, both have remained married to their wives, whom they both adore. Their love stories amazingly survived the headiness of their success. A true testimony to their true character.

Jimmy is historically a rocker so that’s what you can expect mostly from him but this duet was from an album he released in the early nineties titled Soul Deep. As the name suggests, he decided to switch things up a little and foray into a different genre releasing an album of covers of great soul songs with his own twist.
Different from what he was hugely popular for but I think he nailed it.

Barnesy and Farnesy, plus Diesel on guitar (Barnesy's brother-in-law FYI)... that's Australian Royalty right there! John Farnham is known as a solo singer, Jimmy Barnes used to front Cold Chisel in the 80s. This song was on an album of Jimmy's called Soul Deep from the late 80s that was full of old soul songs ❤

Co-written by Isaac Hayes and sung by Sam and Dave back in the 60’s. For your own listening pleasure, there is another live performance of this on TH-cam. The guitarist in that show gets in on the vocals in his high register and they end it with great three part harmony.
