    Khe Sanh ,the definitive song about the Australian military experience of the Vietnam War & coming back to an uncaring ,even hostile society in 1973 .Not fitting in, cant get a break ,being misunderstood. The Cold Chisel song that every Australian knows by heart.

    • @PaulA-bv1rt

      Even though we never fought at Khe Sanh , it is a top notch song about Vietnam.

      @NELCARM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PaulA-bv1rt Yes at sometime in this last bloody lockdown I watched a video about Khe Sanh. Don Walker wasn’t a Viet vet either so I suppose it’s poetic licence . It’s a song that needed to be written to get people to realise how hard it was for those that served & came back to a country after a very unpopular war.”No D day hero’s in 1973 really captured the sentiment. Gough Whitlam won the 1972 election on a bring our troops pledge. Pity there were treated so poorly when they returned.

      @@waynec3563 Great song but I thought Chisel turned Khe Sanh into an anthem almostI first saw them in 1979.. You can't go wrong with Cold Chisel. They are legendary in Australia, have been playing for decades and they have a lot of variety in their music. All band members were songwriters but the pianist, Don Walker, is a legendary songwriter down here. I think their ballads are the best. You should check out "When the war is over" and "Four Walls". If you enjoyed Choir Girl, you will love them too.

    Cold Chisel, more than just another pub rock band, are an institution in Australia, and lead singer Jimmy Barnes is a national treasure. Their pianist/keyboardist Don Walker wrote many of their hits, and is among one of our very best songwriters. From here I'd check out 'Khe Sanh' which is probably their signature song, 'When the War is Over', and 'Bow River' for a more rocking side to Cold Chisel. But you can't go wrong with anything from them.

  • @dramoth64
    @dramoth64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Chisel's were the definition of the hard working, hard playing Australian pub band. Jimmy during their concerts would go through a couple of bottles of vodka over the course of 2-2.5 hours for the gig. The guy doing the counterpoint vocals is Ian Moss. Another awesome singer in his own right.
    And if you want a rock and roll romance, Jimmy wrote a song about his then girlfriend Jane Mahony, the Thai stepdaughter of an Australian diplomat. Story has it that her father got a posting to Japan, and after she'd met Jimmy, she flew to Japan to see her parents and talk to them about dropping out of university. And the song "The Rising Sun" was written. Mind you, he jumped on a plane to steal her back again, flew to Japan stayed for a couple of weeks, flew back and she followed 6 months later and they got married in 1981. They have 4 kids, the 3 eldest made their own band called "The Tin Lids" (Aussie slang for Kids). They've been together now for 42 years and during the pandemic lockdowns in Australia, every week (or a couple of times a week), they would drop a video on social media of them (Jimmy and Jane) doing a song. Jimmy singing and Jane playing guitar. They are still as much in love today, as they were 42 years ago.

  • @robertleeimages
    @robertleeimages 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Jimmy, wife Jane and family have kept us Aussies entertained on twitter/Facebook with live performances from their living room throughout the pandemic, even normal day to day things like cooking and gardening and hanging with grandkids. That's the character of the guy and his family, not better than anyone but just regular people

    Came out in 1980, this classic Aussie song stands up so well four decades later.
    Probably could class it as soft rock/pop but the vocals from Barnes are very soulful and the harmonies are fantastic too.
    The guitarist Ian Moss had a fantastic voice too and sang lead vocals on a few songs.
    Bow River is an iconic song of there's where he sings the main lead vocals but Barnes also contributes....must check it out.

    I saw Cold Chisel at a large concert in Victoria Park Sydney in 1977, just before they made it big. They are probably even more popular in Australia than ACDC, with much better lyrics. One of the other band members is Ian Moss who is also a fantastic singer and has had a fantastic solo career. Jimmy Barnes the singer has a brother with an equally powerful voice named John Swan. Best song imo Flame Trees.

    Do you remember the cover of Deep Purple's "Lazy" that you loved that was Joe Bonamassa & Jimmy Barnes?
    Well Cold Chisel's lead singer is Jimmy Barnes 😎
    Check out one of their other collaborations which is Jimmy's song "Stone Cold".
    Other Cold Chisel tracks to check out are: When the War is Over, Bow River, Four Walls, Forever Now.
    You also love some of Jimmy's solo stuff...the duet with John Farnham "When Something is wrong with my Baby", Good Times with INXS & his classic "Working Class Man".

    It is about that, back in the 90's a girlfriend of mine had an abortion after we broke up. I didnt even know she was pregnant. Our differences weren't insurmountable and I was positive we could have sorted things out but she was angry and made her decision. It still hurts me to this day that I may have a child in heaven that never made it here because of a stupid argument over nothing of real importance that many 20 somethings experience. I am thankful that 4 years later I became a father with another woman and I cherish my daughter to this day and will forever.

    Jimmy is a legend and the lead guitarist, Ian Moss has a lovely voice too and sings on quite a few of their songs. Good guitarist as well. Cold Chisel really don't have a bad song and have been around for several decades. I suggest you listen to One Long Day off their Swingshift album. Its a live album but a brilliant version of that song. I also suggest "Wild Thing" from their Last Stand concerts so that you can get an idea of how great they were (are) to see live.

    Wow, you really went off into the obscure as far as America goes. But as far as Aussies go, I'm sure they're thinking "It's about time". While you're doing good Aussie bands that are virtually unknown in America, you should react to a song or two by the band Rose Tattoo.

    Such as Russell Morris, "The Real Thing", "Sweet, Sweet Love".
    And Stevie Wright, "Evie" Parts 1, 2 and 3.
    Stevie Wright was in the band The Easybeats - you may have heard their song "Friday on My Mind". One of the other members was George Young, brother of Malcolm and Angus Young of ACDC.

    For some more blues style numbers, check out Janelle, Just how many times, and One long day. Chisel were hailed as a rock band, but I have always thought that they were more versatile than that. Ian Moss has a killer voice as well, more silky than Jimmy's, and they go together very well.

    "Cheap wine" gets my vote for the next one 😊 a piano based song with a surprisingly complex musical composition that sounds simple at the same time. these guys were very talented. a lot of people (who don't know much about music) would dismiss them though because of their "bogan" image.

    I'm sure others have suggested it, but you should hear the duet version of Simply the Best the singer in this (Jimmy Barnes) did with Tina Turner in the early 90s. It's excellent. Jimmy and Tina have the male and female equivalents of each other's voices.
