Even today the subject is.....Controversial to say the least. I must say that you are very astute, people who have listened to this song ever since it came out don't get the meaning behind it.

I'm sorry, but Jimmy is too cute when he smiles. This song is special and it's open to interpretation, but yes, it's a sensitive topic.
I read in Barnes book this song is about a girl having an abortion 😢😢
Jimmy's wife (Jane) lost their first child to miscarriage, that's what the song is about. Not abortion but you pretty much hit the nail on the head.
could also relate to what happened to David, raised thinking Jimmy was his uncle.
