Yeh that guy pissed me right off, I took the effort to explain vocal growls and vibrato and how Jimmy didn’t scream but he just kept slamming me in the face so I deleted it all and blocked him 😂 Choir girl is about a man watching his girlfriend go off to have an abortion- the white hospital gown makes her look like a choir girl. The band is on the girls side, they’re expressing her loneliness and what the couple are going through, the guilt etc. No one talked of such things back then so it was controversial.

Dr.Kap I feel ya. I’m certain there is a broad and targeted attack going on at the moment that is directed at Australians online. I’ve noticed over the last two years that when anyone comments on anything that’s good about Australia there are viscous, abusive trolls laying in wait. I believe it’s a concerted effort at demoralising and dividing us and it’s definitely targeted. At first I thought I was just being paranoid but it’s happening so often I don’t anymore. Stay frosty, stay united and above all keep speaking truth to trolls.
Considering at times he doesn't use his vocal chords to sing he is astounding. I am confused however that he has never been recognised internationally like he should.

I'm 59 ..born and bred in Sydney..Chisel were hard rock back then.. all Aussie bands cut their teeth in pubs..with heaps of competition..thats what made Aussie bands good in those days.. looking back,..we were spoilt for choice...
Cold Chisel, AC/DC and many other great Australian bands started out in SA at the iconic Pub called the Largs Pier Hotel on the Esplanade of the Beachside Suburb Largs Bay in South Australia. Jimmy Barnes even wrote and recorded a song called ‘The Largs Pier Hotel’

Facts. The American and British record companies were terrified of the Australian music scene as they knew full well if they got air play on radio they were gonna lose sales to Aussie record labels and artists... it's been proven in umpteen documentaries from that period on music labels. Absolutely criminal Aussie bands were ignored world wide due to not being owned by American or British labels... but hey we got to watch them down the local for $2 so it's not bad I guess.
@@manna6618 Yeah the big record labels didn't control the pubs so bands could reach their audience direct allowing highly political songs to gain popularity. The globalists bought up all the pubs, killed pub rock and put in pokies and ran trivia nights instead. All the while dumbing down the music industry in Australia and OS.

I'm amazed you've still never reacted to the official video of "Cheap Wine", another absolute classic.
In case no-one's mentioned it already, the 'Suffer little children / Send that little child to me' is a reference to a Bible verse: 'Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.' It's been used in the past to console parents who have lost children, to convince them that the child has gone to a 'better place'. I think I first heard it at a funeral for one of my schoolmates.
Great choice for a first-listener reaction. I was lucky enough to see Chisel live a few times, and they were simply spectacular. Never a note out of place.

Man, it’s hard to beat Jimmy. Growing up with Chisel and his music has been a great ride. Strong, versatile and talented, what more could you ask for ? Always had critics/whingers about his voice, that’s their problem not his. He does what he does and does it well !!
Totally agree! I was lucky enough to come to Australia in 1972 as a kid and grew up here with this music as my soundtrack. I absolutely love Cold Chisel as well as other great Aussie bands and if we hadn't moved here, I would never have heard of them...

Outside of Oz, Mr Barnes has played in NZ more than any other country...Not just because of geographical convenience, but because he is loved by kiwis, all kiwis, for decades. Nothing but respect period.

Khe Sanh got banned from radio play back in the late 1970s, and Choirgirl didn't. That alone should tell you how dense some people are and how clever Don Walker is as a songwriter.

For all the subtlety he put into the song, Don Walker is certainly a songwriting genius. Several of Cold Chisel's songs got banned on Australian radio, particularly Khe Sanh for some overt sex and drug references, but Choirgirl sailed right past the censors on radio stations owned and operated by the Australian branch of the Catholic Church, even though the meaning in the song is right there when you take the time to think it through.
First single, third album (plus an EP). You really need to listen to the album, East. It will stun you. From the searing opening of Standing on the Outside, to the bluesy Best Kept Lies, to the explosive My Turn to Cry.
Some say Circus Animals is their best, I don't know. It's like choosing from your children. They're all bloody good.
But East has that commercial polish, that quality of production, the variety of song styles from members of the band. Yet it still captured the volume, the skill and the power of the live band.
I don't know, I was changed forever when the needle hit the album on the turntable in 1980 and Standing on the Outside shattered me for life.
Mate that is why I watch your work, because you do care, you do appreciate, you look deeper and you don't sit there like a smiling, bopping zombie like some.

Beautifully expressed. I couldn’t agree more. East was unbelievable and as different as Circus Animals is, to me, it is just as good. No matter how many times I listen to these albums, I’m always taken on this incredible ride of emotions.

You might want to check out 'Swanee' , in particular 'If I Were a Carpenter' . John Swan is Jimmy's older brother ..an amazing voice . You will be blown away at the similarity and level of excellence .
Swanee also has an incredible voice and as you say, you will be blown away. Sadly he never received the recognition he truly deserved as a singer.
In his day Swanee was a better singer but Jimmy killed it in this video
As a Gen Xer, this song wad part of the fabric of my 80s teenage life. It always takes me back to a simpler time, when radio and live music were kings. I've always preferred Jimmy's voice when he holds back a bit, and Choir Girl is a good example.
Cold Chisel can be more subtle than first appears. Choir Girl was on the "East" album which coincided with their "Youth in Asia" Tour - pronounced as "Euthanasia" .

Flame trees has special place for me as it was filmed in Oberon when I was at high school there. Love forever now, have to giggle that bow river was the B side of that vinyl single. Growing up in the best era of Oz music.

Haven't heard that song for years and just reiterates how bloody good Cold Chisel's music was at that time. Absolute world class band.
I believe send the little child to me is about the abortion of the baby and it’s soul going to Jesus. She was an unmarried pregnant young woman who was being forced to terminate the pregnancy as in those days they were given three options 1. Get married 2. Be sent to a convent for 9 months a d forced to adopt out their baby or 3. Be forced to terminate her pregnancy by parents as BF wasn’t prepared to marry her. It was an emotional issue and highly controversial as it wasn’t spoken about back then. Dressed in the white surgical gown she looked innocent as a choir girl and crying like a refugee - she had nowhere else to turn. It’s my all time favourite Chisel song and when you see how gorgeous a young Jimmy Barnes was when he smiled you can TOTALLY understand he was the idol of many young women in Australia during the late seventies early eighties and continues to be adored. Even in his sixties he continues to set hearts a flutter. Thank you for appreciating the brilliance of Jimmy’s voice and Cold Chisel. Without question Australia’s favourite rock band albeit not known in USA. They went there to launch during East but refused to adjust their lyrical content and appearance to meet USA music executives expectations and came home where Jimmy penned You’ve Got Nothing I want. It was his stick it response to them.

That song was on the East album that came out in 1979/1980. I could be wrong but I think it was their third album. Even though the subject matter of the song was sad, it still brings back memories of Australia at that time...of Peter Brock smashing Bathurst by 6 laps (distance between 1st and 2nd) and the music that was being played on 3XY. (Melbourne radio station)

I always thought that the line " Send the little child to me. " was what the doctor ( who Jimmy is singing the part of ) was saying regarding the mother being so young as to still practically be a child herself.
Also so young as to naturally be expected to, still be too innocent to recognise the dangerous people in the world " Looking like a choir girl."
Also the doctor being "..... a man who handles his responsibilities. " and " never, never, never let her down. " as opposed to the man who picked her up and let her down by getting her pregnant then abandoning her.
Also the way a young girl coming into womanhood can easily fall into loving a man "...like a sister " or " ...like an only child. " Sometimes it's the wrong irresponsible selfish type of man and sometimes it's the man who shows genuine responsible, caring concern like the doctor here.
The " Suffer little children, send the little child to me." is a reminder of the spiritual religious aspect that divides people as to what side they take regarding their own interpretation of " What Jesus would do."
Always loved the soaring quality of this song and the vocals by men who obviously care and are not afraid to speak out about those other innocents who suffer and calling upon men to think about their responsibilities toward those vulnerable ones who come into their range of power.

I love the early Jimmy stuff.. There is a difference between his Chisel & solo singing career i think.. Both good but different.. His singing changed when he left Chisel..
Hi Nick, I have said and will always say that we are only just starting to catch up to where Chisel were all those years ago. This song is so typical of that, no one else was doing songs like this in Oz,: Star Hotel, Four Walls, Breakfast at Sweethearts, Khe Sanh, and Song for Alan. So many of their songs were tackling deep, unpleasant, and unpopular issues of the day and are just as relevant now but Chisel wrapped them up in fantastic music and lyric construction...
I saw them during this era and this just takes me straight back to 80's and my youth ..He does look amazing and sounds even better ..Just so nostalgic

Jimmy performed only last weekend at the rugby league grand final (rugby league’s super bowl) and can still hold it down in his twilight years!

To me it covers the perspective of everyone involved in the abortion. The girl feeling alone and sad even though she has support and has made this decision, the father of the baby feeling helpless in taking away her grief but still tries to support her, the nurse having compassion for her whilst wheeling her to have the procedure and finally the doctor wanting to prevent the suffering of unwanted children by performing this procedure..

I love that you listen to the lyrics and try and understand them or put your own interpretation on them. I watch another text channel Alex & Andy and they’re ok but the thing that shears shut me with them is they are much more focused on the sound and don’t pay that much attention to the lyrics, even with a song as poetically stunning as Sounds of Silence. You give equal weight to the music, the lyrics and the performance. That’s what I appreciate.
Whenever the radio stations would do a top 500 or top 100 for Australia Day weekend this song would be Number 1 or top 3 for at least 20 years

I dont think the band took a stance either way but were empathetic to the girls situation . Jimmy drank a lot of booze and smoked a lot of cigarettes often on stage ,one in each hand , to get the scratchy voice he has now but it was always what he wanted ,to sound like an old blues singer. The clarity and tone of his old songs is amazing. His newer voice took a lifetime to create. I love both. I also love the way you go for the deeper dive into these songs don't ever apologise for that .
Ive only just discovered this channel,dude there are so many awesome Australian bands/singer's that you would have content for the next 10 years, my first live band i ever seen was INXS, i think it was about 5 dollars a ticket, AC/DC,cold chisel,the angels,screaming jets and so on,if you like pure vocals then google john farnham or guy sebastian, females ,missy higgins, jessica mauboy,chrisie amphlett,the Australian music scene is unreal,its a shame only us Aussies get to see most of it
I'm sure it has been explained already but just in case he was the boyfriend in the scenario and he didn't want his girlfriend to have an abortion, the song beautifully tells the story of the heartache involved in such a life changing experience and decision.

Don't be sorry, I have listened to this song for years and years and I never really knew what it was about. You are right, if we didn't like you digging into the song, pausing and commenting we would watch the original video. But instead we watch you.
I heard a story a while ago which I think was true that they had a US tour planned when they were quite big here in Australia but the US promoter screwed up somehow and it really tilted the band. They could have been just as big around the world as they were here had their tour not get canned.

Same with Khe Sahn - not directly anti-war, just telling one man's story.
Got to realise the time. In Australia in the 50's, 60's & 70's, no-one talked about the 'a' word. But there was a lot of pressure from 'society' and the medical profession to terminate 'unwanted' pregnancies and for the unmarried mother to give up the child for adoption. You may have heard of the 'stolen' generation in Aus, partly this is the government stepping in and deciding who could raise a child (many Aboriginal families had children taken from them to be raised by the system). But many unwed mothers (of any colour) had their children taken from them at birth. Sometimes the mother was told the baby died, other times they were given a pile of paperwork to fill out - in the middle of which was the adoption papers they didn't know about until afterwards.
it was also never talked about that blokes were abandoning the girls and there was little support for the girls to chose anything else. It was a dark time.
