Do you need to disconnect the battery before stripping the wires?

I do not want to discount your question, because in general disconnecting, the negative terminal on a battery is always a good precautionary step.
I personally do not for this task. My vehicle is off and no aux switch is engaged and all preinstalled wires are already set up through the fuse box versus you installing a new wire connections, fuse taps or hardware connections. This is a low amp connection as well.
I promote disconnecting when doing many other tasks or risks of a tool in the engine bay striking the battery. I am just saying for me, the risk is low, and if something did occur, it is running through a low amp fuse in the fusebox.
Generally I don’t disconnect the battery when changing anything with very low current or switched - which is Not live when switched off. So brake light bulbs, turn signal bulbs, doors, etc.
But most voltage sensitive higher output items I do. For the general DIY user, disconnecting all the time would be a good approach and safe. It is also good to remove any metal jewelry, watches, rings … to prevent contact with battery or physical hazards.
