I’ll never forget the day I was fainting in a bus in the middle of Mexico, this beautiful woman came up to me and gave me a hand full of pennies and said hold on tight. 5 minutes later I was no longer dizzy and felt completely fine. My mom ended up making me a couple of bracelets and I always carry them with me when I travel, bless that woman wherever she is!

    Top causes of copper deficiency:
    • A lack of copper in the diet
    • Intense physical exercise (especially at higher altitudes)
    • Taking a lot of zinc, iron, potassium, or niacin without also taking copper
    • Consuming enriched flour products
    • Consuming fluoride from tap water
    • Taking high amounts of ascorbic acid
    • Excessive sweating
    • Sun tanning too often
    • Stress, high levels of DHEA, or high levels of cortisol
    • Consuming distilled water
    • Gastric bypass surgery
    • Consuming too much sugar, coffee, alcohol, or aspartame
A genetic problem with copper absorption can also lead to a deficiency in copper.
A copper brace that wraps around the buttocks where the sciatic nerve is or other topical copper remedies may be beneficial for sciatic nerve pain. But ensuring you’re getting enough copper from your diet is also essential.
    Foods high in copper include:
    1. Liver
    2. Oysters
    3. Shellfish
    4. Dark chocolate (sugar-free)
    5. Cashews
    6. Meat
    Thank you Dr Berg!

Here's something to consider: The sciatic nerve goes through a small opening in the pelvic bone. That opening is very close to the colon. I believe that when we eat certain foods (for me it's cherries), the colon becomes inflamed, and because the sciatic nerve is so close to the colon, it also becomes inflamed. Thus causing the sciatic pain. I'm speaking from experience... because every time I eat an excessive amount of cherries l get sciatica.

Hey eric, Ayurveda reader and self practioner here. Just a quick thing, in our Indian families copper has been placed as one of the vital things and was used in multiple ways, however to make sure one does not get copper deficiency, our ancestors made copper utensils and stored water in them overnight. Bracelets might be one of the short term fixes, but the utensil stays forever, I even have one in my home passed on from my grandfather. Keep in mind to not place dairy products in copper, it can cause severe digestive issues on the long term. Thx for the reminder for copper, and I hope my comment helps 😊.

Back in the 70s my grandmother, who suffered terribly from arthritis and associated pain, flew to Boston to see a specialist and one of the things he told her was to wear a copper bracelet. She did until the day she died when she was 100 years old. She swore by that bracelet because, from the time she started wearing it, her suffering eased greatly and she lived a long and healthy life.

I had sciatica pain off and on for years. This year it was so bad that I couldn’t walk properly. I got mri done on my spine and found I have a huge 0:20 mass on my spine compressing my spinal cord. I had a major back surgery and now recovering. Thank god for the mri and the neurosurgeon ❤

My neurosurgeon unapologetically made my back worse. After month or more I had another MRI and he casually says 'oh we will just have to operate again'. I told him 😡 After maybe over half year of further excrutiating pain, I LUCKILY found the most amazing chiropractor (an old school friend) and he laughed at my 2nd MRI and said '-your back is f*cked' AND that the 2nd MRI was far worse than the first. He did a lot of therapy on me to release my muscle fatigue etc and then limited manipulations -esp also to help the blood to flow freely again (most of it for free so definitely nothing superfluous). Two years later after being terrified of even using the stairs so scared I would jolt my back, I was back playing hockey and even marshal art again... The right exercises to strengthen and SUPPORT ones back is also SO important...💃

If the "sciatica" is localised in the butt cheek, and if the straight leg raise test is negative, then it's probably piriformis syndrome, in which case the cure would be to stretch and strengthen the hips, especially the opposite hip that the pain is on. The gluteus maximus and medius typically need to be strengthened, whilst the piriformis needs to be relaxed via hip external and internal rotation stretches.

My husband has piriformis syndrome and the doctor said true sciatica goes all the way to the toes. Piriformis syndrome typically only affects part of the leg. But the stretches help both since they both pertain to that nerve.

@@mhelen2810 Do both hips equally 👍I only stretched the side with the pain on when I was a teenager but it kept coming back plus I was creating muscular imbalances. I got sciatica for almost 3 months and almost full recover (around 65%-70% i think) i did chrio, acupuncture, traditional nerve massage, consuming medicine for low back pain (i got it from my from friends, Indonesian medicine) and lastly excercise/fisio. At first month it hurt like hell, got difficulties when walking, sit down too. Hope this helps you

Before you follow his great advice. Check your wrists first (and check whether you have hyper mobile elbows/knees/feet)!!! I had what I believe was Sciatica for 2 years, every time I would sit down, when I went to get up, it was a sharp shooting pain above my butt, that was the worst symptom. ONE DAY, I decided to do reflexology on myself (because I remember Dr Berg saying most pain is deferred), I could feel the part of my foot that maps to the sciatic nerve swollen. Long story short, I found out there's pressure points on your hands! The sciatic pressure point is top wrist at the veins, when I pressed down I could hear bones grind (but only on one hand!), so I massaged the area until the grinding stop. I kid you not, IT CLEARED MY PAIN!!!.... So I do have hyper mobile elbows and knees and this may play a factor in why this happened to me. BUT INCASE IT HELPS SOMEONE OUT THERE! and thank you Dr Berg ;)

It’s the worst case I ever had, pain in the buttock, lower back, hamstring and fire in my calf. After 2 days of this misery I saw your video, remembered that I have a large copper bracelet and put it around my ankle. It felt like the pain was getting worse but after about 20 minutes I felt muscles contracting like they were loosening up. I felt it in all of the 3 aforementioned areas. Then… the pain started to subside and I fell asleep. I almost slept the whole night but I changed positions and I started hurting again for a very short while, it left and I was able to get up and walk my dog! Thanks so much!!

I can't thank you enough Dr. Berg for your invaluable insights and knowledge that you so generously share on your channel! Due to years of hard physical labour, accidents and sports my back was given a MRI scan 10 years ago and it showed my lower third and fourth lumbar vertebras worn down and cracked, which in turn has immobilized me many times over the years in regards to my right leg from the buttocks down with severe pain due to sciatica. I do not take nor like pharmaceutical pills, occasionally a paracetamol but I do the your sciatic nerve exercises (very helpful!) and follow my intuition when it comes to what my body asks for in regards to foods ( check on all the items you listed ), but you just opened my eyes to copper. Interestingly I invested in a copper bracelet years ago and whenever I wore it the pain in my elbow and wrist would gradually subside. Now I wear it all the time and your video just confirmed it. I never heard of the copper brace for your back. I'm on it! So thank you again for this gem of information! With Gratitude and Thanks all the best from England to you, your family and your team.

Thank you so much, Dr. Berg. Your videos always seem to come right on time. I am a recent recipient of horrible sciatic pain and low mobility. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to navigate life. I also have plantar fasciitis and heel spurs in the same leg along with an arthritic knee from a 20-year old car accident. I just recently started wearing magnetic anklets, and i can already see a difference with less swelling and better movement in my leg. Still too stiff for some stretches, but i am definitely going to try out the copper bracelets. Thank you! ❤

I hope you find relief from the pain and better health. I have had painful plantar fasciitis 2 times. The first time lasted 4 months and years later the second time I got it, I knew the healing benefits of fasting so I tried fasting. For 5 days I did a water fast and on day 3 the pain was gone! Amazing and very cost effective! I have done this another time after a car accident and as a result had chronic joint pain. I was taking (useless) painkillers for weeks, then remembered (!) fasting healing and again, pain gone on day 3 of a 5 day fast. Our bodies are miraculous but just need the time/rest from food to heal. Blessings to you.

I had sciatica real bad and almost considered a minimally invasive (lol) surgery.
Then I heard about yoga and the "half pigeon" pose helped a lot, but like was mentioned it keeps coming back.
A lot of great info to work on here today Dr Berg; thank you so much

Yes!.. had sciatica for years. Hamstring stretches kind of helped... Pigeon stretch instantly solved my sciatica 90%. Like flipping a switch. I almost could not believe it. So I continued the pigeon stretch once a day for a year... I then found the bridge stretch and it seems to work as good or better. I do it 3 or 4 times a week with hamstring stretches too. Only takes a few minutes. Give it a try.

As always, very good advice by Dr.Berg.
Have HAD 'severe' sciatica for several years. (have diagnosed spinal 'stenosis' via MRI.) but not a candidate for surgery due to other medical reasons.
My solution that has 'relieved' my sciatica was to "restore" my posture and 'shape/curve' of my lower spine by the semi-constant use of an orthodpedic lumbar pillow - a semi circular foam pillow at about 4" maximum with a 'belly strap'. I use it for sitting (never slouching!!), when driving my vehicle, and sleeping. The 'posture' restoration has releived my siciatica by 95+%.
I also self medicate with alpha-Lipoic acid, bio-available B-Complex & magnesium(taurate). Plus, I had my primary care physician prescibe a total vitamin and mineral, etc. blood testing - and then corrected most all apparent deficiencies. My Copper 'balance' was OK, as I eat a lot of shellfish - mussels, etc. . Most healthcare insurance will pay for such detailed blood testing ... under their 'wellness and PREVENTION'' portion of their policies.
The discussion of 'balance' of micro-nutrients, etc., I feel, is very and vitally important -- worked for me, as I am slowly and determinedly returning towards being an active life-long 'extreme athlete', even at my 'advanced' age !!!!!

Thank you for this. So you have a pillow that is a half circle, and somehow place it in the small of your back and then tape yourself to it while sitting? Something like that? Appreciate it.

I was able to get rid of my 20-year battle with sciatica by strengthening my lower and lower back. I have always worked out, but never really focused on it and didn't realize it was the problem until I did some research. It's been gone now for almost 3 years now!! I do take Ghk-cu also, but only in the last month.

Wow, this was so informative. I love you Dr. Berg! You are helping me so much with all my issues. I’m reading your book now and just ordered a bunch of your supplements. Hi , For more than 1 year with pain in the calf, I tried all kinds of elongations, yesterday I found this video, today I cut 30 cm of copper of 2mm in diameter, I rolled it in my calf, I kept it all day, and for some reason the pain I felt disappeared, it was like having a knot and with the help of copper I untied it. It's incredible I still can't believe it, tomorrow I'll go for a run to confirm that the pain is gone

Thank you for this very informative video on the role of copper in the human physiology Dr Berg. You're videos are super educative and well researched. If I may add some info; in Bharat (India) , it is a very common practice to store drinking water in copper pots or flasks or drink water out of copper glasses. And the copper bracelets that you mentioned are also worn by many. It is highly recommended as per Ayurveda. However, doctors trained in allopathy or western medicine often caution against excessive use of copper vessels as it may lead to Wilson's disease.
Now , is this concern founded? How much Cu per day is safe ? How do we gauge that ? Thanks

Walking is painful too. Myofascial therapy works for a short period of time. I am athletic and I push through the pain but I am tired of it. So I have ordered copper supplements, a copper bracelet, and moving the beef liver out of the freezer to cook tomorrow. Fingers crossed! Thanks for the info, I always find your stuff very helpful.
