Nice comparison...I just wanted to clarify that the LM2 Duramax had aluminum pistons but the new LZ0 has steel pistons...sounds crazy to me, but it's been shared by a couple of the GM engineers. I'm still digging my LM2 GMC Sierra.
You sir are correct 👍
Thanks for sharing this 👍🏾
DURAMAX ALL DAY
It’s a great engine and I hope GM doesn’t discontinue you it
My 3.0 Dmax is THE best engine I’ve ever owned in a truck, hands down! It’s sewing machine smooth and very quiet! I get 24mpgs every tank in city driving as well.
That is awesome!!!
I agree
I love my 3.0 duramax. I tow 4000-4500lbs in the city everyday. I’m constantly blown away with my fuel mileage.
I go with the 3.0 Duramax. The bad news is Ecodiesel will be discontinued.
Holy crap.. I think JB went to mechanic school.. That is a nice in-depth review! That inline 6 is hard to beat IMO.
The fact that Chrysler discontinued their diesel makes GM's better. Why buy an engine that is no longer being supported?
I have a 3.0L Duramax in a 2022 Yukon, and my co worker has a 2019 Ram 1500 with the Ecodiesel. We car pool to work alternating our vehicles, and our commute is 65 miles each way. Driving the exact same speed on the exact same path for several months, the Duramax has averaged 28 mpg and the Ecodiesel has averaged 23 mpg. This is going 65 mph, and both vehicles are in good working order. On top of this, the Duramax has more power, starts significantly better in the cold, and is quieter. The Ecodiesel also required a new EGR valve at 11k miles, the Duramax is sitting at 8k miles without requiring anything but basic service so far.
I have no idea why people worry so much about the rear mounted timing chain or the oil pump belt for the Duramax. The Ecodiesel is notorious for eating main bearings and being significantly less reliable.
It is no contest for me, the Duramax dominates the Ecodiesel.
I own one a eco diesel and I get better fuel mileage than that your bullshit, and wait till that timing chain and pump fails u on that Durajunk
You’re coworker might want to get a tune on their Ecodiesel, I put a tune on my wife’s 2017 Ecodiesel and she has been getting 27 mpg.
At the beginning of the video you said ram used to have the duramax beat on HP and Chevy had the most torque. It was the opposite. Chevy has always had more HP, but ram had more torque. Now after the update the Chevy has more of both.
I have a 2020 Ecodiesel and love it. 26+mpg average and tows like a dream. 94,000km on it and zero issues.
Very professional. Thanks.
Love my 2021 3.0 duramax. 25 mpg around town & 34 mpg all day long on the highway.......
DMAX 👍👍
💪🏾💪🏾
I do like my 2017 Ecodiesel, although, if I ever replace it I would like to check out a suburban with the 3.0 duramax.
When you mentioned compression My HO Cummins is 16:1 vs the standard output at 19:1. I assume the Duramax has lower compression to run higher boost. I also own a Gen 3 Eco diesel in my Jeep and in 2 years I have had zero issues.
Good stuff, thanks for sharing this 👍🏾👍🏾
One big key you forgot to note is Ram is discontinuing their eco diesel motor after 2023. They are replacing it with their electric truck. GM is going to be the only manufacturer still producing these small diesel pickups after 2023.
What a huge mistake by Ram.
Actually they are no longer building the engine for 2023 and I think I mentioned them killing it in the footage I did for the MPG comparison 👍🏾👍🏾
My co worker has an ecodiesel, nothing but issues. He loves the performance of it but the reliability has left a lot to be desired.
The max towing package for the diesel got cut from the 1/2 tons this model year do to some shortage, at least that's what I heard from another youtuber.
The LZO hands down!! The only advantage that the RAM has over the Chevy is you can delete it where there is no deletes for the duramax.
👍🏾👍🏾
Eco diesel owner
There killing the motor to replace it with the EV line
I have a 21 Laramie and besides the recalls wich my dealer took care of no problem
It’s one of th nicest trucks I’ve ever driven
Lots of hwy for me but I’ve towed a car trailer from Florida to Michigan and am 25k miles
Avg 29 mpg since I’ve had it
Yea which is a mistake, can’t wait for you to see the video I post tomorrow afternoon 👀
We could not be happier with our eco-diesel. Coming from a Pentastar in a wrangler to the ecodiesel is such a no-brainer. What a shame they are killing it off. That being said I would definitely buy a truck with a 3.0 Duramax diesel as well. From what I have heard the driving characteristics and power delivery are perfect for a truck. I definitely enjoy the fuel economy of the small diesels. Being a semi-old fart I could care less about 0 to 60 times. We can actually easily get the EPA rating on our wrangler. With the old Penta star it was impossible to get more than 15 mpg any time.🇺🇸💪
Yea I remember you said the plug in range was terrible which makes me laugh that they wanna end the diesel… I’m posting a vid tomorrow comparing diesel and hybrid… oh it’s gonna be good 🤘🏾💪🏾🇺🇸
I love my '17 eco as well. Consistently get 27 in mixed driving and same at 75-80. When driving 55-60 (going up route 1 toward Waldoboro, ME) I can get 31-32. No problems so far--107k miles.
Chevy minimax!
💪🏾💪🏾
I get 31 mpg in sport mode in my LZ0
💪🏾💪🏾
JB, come on man! Even with the “higher compression rating” the Duramax absolutely destroys the eco diesel and any other competition by a long shot. This motor is the best of the segment bar none!
Oh I don’t disagree and it’s my choice as I mentioned 👍🏾
Yeah I walk all over the Ram EcoDiesels with my 3.0 Dmax!
Unless GM has relocated their timing belt to the front of the engine (vs. being at the back and needing to separate the transmission to access it), I'm more for the ecodiesel. I love my dodges/Chryslers, but I also would lean towards which engine has the better design, and the ecodiesel seems more conventional than the Duramax i6 (assuming that one aspect from the first gen carried over), respectively.
Both engines offer close performance specs (yes Duramax makes 65 more hp, but hp is almost irrelevant with a diesel). I'd personally pay the extra $2k for the ecodiesel, but I'd keep in mind their emissions issues (as far as I know) are pretty common. Just my $0.02. :)
Dude, it’s once every 150 or 200k miles depending on lm2 or lz0. It’s not a big deal at all given the massive interval.
Also the duramax is more conventional for a diesel. All road tractors use an i6. Best engine configuration by far and I’m glad someone finally went to it. Emissions systems are always a wild card, but they do seem significantly improved over what they once were.
Moot issue Eco Diesel being Discontinued now….by the Way US never got the Gen 1 Eco Diesel….so there has only been 1 update Gen2 to Gen 3 that was 2019
Ram stop the engine for a reason love my duramax
Yea. People got scared off by diesel prices
@@JB_WhoWork I love my mini duramax. Wish it come with bigger tank like 30gallon. Towing my 24ft trailer and need make some stop. Otherwise it’s great for daily(600 miles) per tank easily
Durmax
Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
Both engine is made by VM MOTORS...which that Fiat owns...don't be fooled by the branding of those engines...people...love the vid keep up the good work JB...
Good to know, thanks 👍🏾👍🏾
Dmax is not a VM. 😂
@Ha Ha Adventures you right 3.0 d max is not a vm motori engine...but the 2.8 dmax is ...but the 3.0 is a opel engine that GM and opel developed...
3.0L Duramax isn't VM Motori. The 2.8L was.
@Jellyfrosh I mention that in my reply...but I think chevy is going to discontinue that engine ...cause look what they did to the 2.8 and that was a great engine...
Neither for me. The Eco Diesel is history, the Duramax timing chain R&R is going to be costly, and with diesel cost sky high, I think the ecoboost or the 4 cylinder GM is probably a better option for me since I will only be towing a 21 foot boat on occasion.
Duramaxxx!!!!! Duh xD :)
🤘🏾🤘🏾
I thought the 2.8 was baby Duramax
That’s the fetus Duramax 😂
2.8 was in Colorado and Canyon now discontinued
I just don’t see any advantage if diesel fuel costs more … i have no regrets on getting a 6.2…
The 6.2L is a great engine also, these diesel engines would be great for high mileage usage especially on the Hwy compared to gas
Depends where you live cause here in Canada Diesel is and has been cheaper for a year now
Also even if diesel was more the fuel mileage on a diesel is way better than a gas motor towing on highway. Almost twice the mileage towing than any gas motor in a half ton
Aluminum blocks are used in top fuel drag and race car engines. If it is cast, then yes, iron would be stronger, but if it's a billet block, then the aluminum is stronger.
Thanks for sharing this, good stuff 👍🏾
Lz0 by a lot.
Chevy drive train is better
I have 115,000.00 miles on my eco still fine only regular maintenance.26 mpg tow 7500lb. 13 mpg owned it since day 1. A yah right now I would be putting on that timing chain in the gm 3.0 at 1k-3k moneys. but no need.
Ecodiesel is a much nicer truck DURamax creaks and all the electronics are messed. Looks nice though
I'll skip the Durajunk with the timing belt in the back of the motor between the moter and trans , so when u need service it ,will be a pain in the ass
