The same engine was an option for the 2013-2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I had one in 2014, the car was great new but after the first 10K service, the problems started. The oil cooler and EGR cooler were replaced under warranty. Then at 22K the fuel pump failed but lucky for me there was no metal in the lines. I sold the car in 2015 and the new owner decided to have it "tuned". Soon after the engine had a spun big end failure. I went back to my good old WJ Jeep 4.7L and I still have it. It is still going strong.
That oil pressure problem could be caused by letting the engine idle for prolonged periods of time. I know a lot of guys tend to do that, but it's not good for the engine. The oil pressure drops when your truck is idling. When idling for too long it could lead to oil starvation. Doing this all day, everyday results in a lot of engine wear. Also, regular oil changes need to be done at proper intervals. I'm sure the engines that made it to 300,000 miles were well maintained.

@supramanTRD 2016 ED 128k miles, rigorously maintained and never beaten on. Always driven decent distances as I live 20 miles from town and regularly took it on trips 3-5 hours. Rod shot into the oil pan.
2022 eco here. 3500 miles. Yes I don't daily it. I have a small car I daily. I'm hopeful with 3k mile oil changes vs the 10k the factory recommends that will help it live. Also I'm not going to tow anything. And I don't run it hard. Hopefully this all will help it live.
First of all it a Gen 2 engine and this was updated for the 2017 to 2018 model years possibly even the 2016 model yr. So I have an 18 eco diesel 84k miles no tune. Issues I’ve had are 1 my def injected clogged up. I cleaned and reset codes no problems since. Cleaned my EGR and yes it was nasty. But mechanically it still runs fine. Just dropped in the GDE tune. More to come on that. My high pressure fuel pump was just replace via recall. I get 23mpg with mixed driving. Pre GDE there was significant turbo lag. GDE fixed that. I do tow a 6500lb travel trailer again no issues. When I tow I change my oil at 5k miles instead of 10k miles. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. It’s a diesel and they are expensive, maintain it and chances are you will experience no failure. I’ve seen people with 200k plus miles with no issues and I’ve heard of engine failure at 50k. Honestly I’ve seen Toyotas and Honda fail at Low mileage. Pretty sure this guy does not own an eco diesel.
@@8020Media ok quick update short term impression of the GDE tune. 1. The turbo lag is gone it accelerates like bat out of compared to stock tune even burned rubber in second gear. 2. 200 miles in and gas mileage has improved by 3mpg. 3. The trans mission zips through the first 4 gear to get to 5th which I believe helps with the MPG. The bad. When going through the first 4 gears it’s clunky hard shifts. They say it’s a learning program and hopefully that will smooth it self out. If not GDE does have a fix for it. Overall get the tune if you don’t have it.
Got a 2015 eco diesel deleted and have zero issues on it and I’m pushing 170k miles I haven’t had to do a single thing to it besides normal maintenance on it
Good video Jake, thank you. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a 2017 with 125,000 miles and no major problems. The only problem I'm having, is that I have not been able to get the HP Fuel Pump recall done. I keep getting that the parts are not available yet. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do?
Jose - Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately, this happens often.. When recalls get issued, parts fly off the shelf and it takes a while to get them back in stock. Best thing is to reach out to your dealer.
I have a 2021 Ram with the Gen 3 EcoDiesel with 130,000 miles on it and didn't have one thing wrong. Early Oil changes and fuel filter change religiously. Previously had a 2015 JGC with Gen 2 EcoDiesel and had 230,000 miles on it when I sold it. Only issues I had was the recalls and sensors failing on the DPF. I think people drive these in the city too much which is not good for this engine. These are not good for idling long periods of time. I do long trips and light weight towing. Cant be 27-30 MPG on trips.
These engines are dirty due to the egr. That soot makes its way into the oil. You cannot go 10k between oil changes. You really should be adding fuel treatment to protect your hpfp. That cp4 pump is on the ford and Chevy motor and they have the same issues. These modern Diesel engines need to de taken care of you cannot just put diesel in them and go
I have a problem with low oil pressure on idle. Sensor is good as we tested manually and says no pressure. When accelerating pressure appeared. Cant find a problem. Maybe someone had the same issue?
Pro - Unfortunately, there are many things that can cause low oil pressure at idle, but here are a few things to look into: oil level, viscosity of oil, oil pressure sensor, oil pump, or the oil filter. Keep us updated.
Have checked oil. Oil is old and level is way too much. Filter is old as well. But many of very reliable mechanics told me that with any oil level or visconsity it should make pressure. Unless is blocked. So i removed and tested the oil filter and there is no signs of metal pieces. Oil is going through the oil filter and housing fine. One thing i cant check is oil cooler. It needs to be changed as it cant be cleaned. I will try to change whole housing and will change oil and i will give an update. P.S engine is running fine on idle and on rpm. Also i have issue this truck is not engaging gears and cant drive. Errors says shift to P than desired gear when desired. Could it be the same issue of low pressure?
Pro - Keep us updated on the oil pressure when you address the parts you mentioned. As for not engaging gears, are you getting an engine codes related to the transmission?
I will keep updated. It will take time for me to find out. As going step by step and have not much time with this. I hope by April to sort this out. I have checked errors via diagnostic machine, its says P1B14 which is transmission error. And also it has rail error. Anyway i will sort oil pressure issue firstly and will see other errors. In overall i don’t get why people do not change oils on time. So many cars engines blowed out due this. Its so cheap to change the oil. Thank you and will keep you posted.
MFR - Thanks for the feedback! Since this video was one of our first videos we were working through to audio quality. However, since then, we have dramatically upped our audi0 quality and hope this is seen in our newer videos!
My 2018 ED just blew out the oil cooler while towing about 7000lbs at altitude, Only 42000kms on the OD. Currently waiting to hear from the dealership to find out if it's going to be covered under a good-will warranty.
I just re-watched this video because I got a ping on my response. That said, listen to the video. Do not buy the 2014 through 2016 Eco diesel period. All owner know they (me) went back for a dozen or more recalls. Problems stated here, the EGR cooler and fuel pump were recalls. I have a 2014 GC with 194k on it now. My first post from a year ago was at 181k. Problems since then have been waterpump and E brake cables. Mopar doesn't want to sell you parts for this motor. The waterpump was $1000. and not in stock. A Gates was so cheap I can't even remember the price. Always buy aftermarket. Another take away from the video is that light towing is best. I'm towing a Camaro on an aluminum trailer. The Jeep absolutely has a marginal cooling system because of the tight packaging. The transmission always runs cool and the oil temps are always in check. Just the coolant temp. So would I buy another? Maybe a 2018 or newer JC. Seems like I could get a nice one for $20 to 24k. Mine is really really nice and in fantastic condition because Ireallytake care of it. The replacement would have to be in the same condition
Treat the Eco the right way, with a good measure of respect, tow if you like, maintain it often, and you will be a happy driver. Most of these problems are due to over-heating, poor maintenance, and unnecessary idling.
Proper maintenance and frequent oil changes will honestly go a really long way. No such thing as too frequent an oil change, especially when they are very cheap relative to the cost of the vehicle. A 2021 won't have a 2019 or earlier engine so you're all good there, a lot less to worry about on the newer models just keep taking care of it!
Perhaps good one or bad one should be looking at the driver. My Ecodiesel cratered at 60,000 miles when after it was warm, I floored it. Thank God for the warranty. I usually baby the engine.
Hmmm, for the 1st Gen the only real engine issue is the potentail timing chain slipping. The other issues are engine accessories, so real ENGINE problems is a bit of an exaggeration I'd say. Sorry, I think I have to ignore this review based on your input of First Generation Eco-diesel engines.
Diesels are different than gas engines. Turbocharged diesels are the best! But turbocharged engines of any kind need to operated different than a non-turbocharged engine. Fuel quality is a big issue with all diesels. I use HOT SHOTS SECRET EDT in both our Ecodiesel and Cummins diesels. I also have a Flowmaster 50 Series Big Block HD muffler and the Bank's silencer delete kit. I use Wix filters in all my vehicles. Ecodiesel or Cummins, a diesel with the right gear ratio, is the absolute best way to power a lot of vehicles. Products like "Speed of Air" pistons look like they can dramatically improve internal combustion engines.
The EGR system is a complete pos. It will eventually cause a catastrophic failure to this perfectly good engine. 193k and still going strong. 33.8 Hwy according to the computer, need to do my own calc next trip. Filled it up in Green Valley AZ, 26 Gal tank, drove around for 30 minutes, then drove to Rocky Point MX 4.5 hours, drove around Rocky Point for 3 days maybe 3 hours, drove back to Green Valley 4.5 hours and still had 3/16ths of a tank left. Amazing engine if taken care of.
Ya know i watch your video and the other channels like it and I'm like yeah these suck. But then i read the reviews by owners and I'm like well? I own a 2015 Jeep GC, 100K no issues, runs great, great fuel consumption, my only issue and maybe its my ignorance is well two issues, one, the oil gets a little hot when i'm towing in the mountains. Like 260ish not for long but it gets there and i'm towing maybe 4000. Mind you my trailer is flat so there is wind resistance. Second the recalls, the HPFP is now over a year and no end in sight. Now they have stacked the new recall on so who knows when or if they will fix it. I mean do they even intend too, since the are canceling the motor? I was planning an oil cooler and a delete and all that but 'im like is it worth it? On the other hand i could like the other posters get another 2 or 3 K and no issues. The question is what percent are we talking here for these failures? Most the posters below seem happy so im curious.
S - We can't really provide a percentage so to say of the issues. We can only say what we have seen in these engines. It really comes down to the luck of the draw. Just keep up with maintenance, that's all you can do.
The Ecodiesel was not a clean sheet design by Chrysler. It was designed by GM and VM. Chrysler bought the engine design for next to nothing after GM threw it away.
The notion that Europeans don't build decent diesels is laughable as most cars and trucks over there are in fact diesel!! Should they have left the 3.0 overseas? Probably! Ford could have used the 4bt inline 4 platform and I think it would have been a better fit! I've been around Cummins engines in marine commercial trucks and pickups and the 4bt is a stout lil power plant.
@@8020Media I understand and thank you. Was just looking at maybe getting one and wanted to know what I was looking at to improved the service reliability of the truck
Why can’t you just flush the cooling system out after an oil cooler failure we do it all the time on trucks Cat C15s are always having oil coolers fail
You usually can - just flush the system and replace the cooler. However it sometimes causes coolant to mix into the oil too which is when it can lead to engine failure.
Was driving and got a message saying low oil pressure within seconds the truck turned off and had a message to put it in park. It would start up but sounded terrible.
They’ve been running them for many years in agricultural machinery in Europe, Cummins is garbage too have way too many censors , buy yourself a gas engine especially today with diesel being 1.60 more a gallon and filters plus def anti pollution system all crap lucky to sell theses pieces of garbage just trouble from A to Z money pits , I have had many of theses eco and Cummins crap both of them get yourself a gas , unless your pulling very heavy loads the Cummins better choice than eco diesel but if you can avoid both of them you’re going to sleep better at night 😂😂😂crappy motors bottom line .

J - That is a recipe for a long lasting truck!
T - Thanks for taking the time to share this insight and your experience.
T - Thanks for taking the time to come back and share your experience! This will certainly be helpful for future viewers.
Got a 2015 eco diesel deleted and have zero issues on it and I’m pushing 170k miles I haven’t had to do a single thing to it besides normal maintenance on it
U - The beauty of deleting! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Jake. 👍🏼
J - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience! This will certainly be helpful for future viewers.
I had a 2016 ED and had 40k when I sold it. No issues, but I did tune it. I wish I would have kept it. Emissions are killing these diesels!
B - Thanks for sharing your experience. They sure are..
These engines are dirty due to the egr. That soot makes its way into the oil. You cannot go 10k between oil changes. You really should be adding fuel treatment to protect your hpfp. That cp4 pump is on the ford and Chevy motor and they have the same issues. These modern Diesel engines need to de taken care of you cannot just put diesel in them and go
Ryan - Thanks for adding this valuable insight. Will certainly help future viewers!
Agreed, most ecodiesel owners don't even know what an oil change is. They do 40,000 miles, then complain when the bearings fail.
What kind of fuel treatment are you referring to?
@@ron1386 I use hot shot everyday diesel treatment
You base this on?@@SupramanTRD
Pro - Please do!
I’ve got a 17 with 100k and have had zero issues
Frank - Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear that it’s treated you well.
How is it doing as of today?
Great review! Please work on mic quality, the echo is kinda bad my friend
MFR - Thanks for the feedback! Since this video was one of our first videos we were working through to audio quality. However, since then, we have dramatically upped our audi0 quality and hope this is seen in our newer videos!
Yup I got a 2018 and lost my engine at 53k miles. At Ram now getting a brand new engine.
Robert - So sorry to hear this. Do you know what the issue was that caused the engine to die?
My 2018 ED just blew out the oil cooler while towing about 7000lbs at altitude, Only 42000kms on the OD. Currently waiting to hear from the dealership to find out if it's going to be covered under a good-will warranty.
Ryan - So sorry to hear this.. Please keep us updated!
L - Thanks for the feedback and coming back to update! This will certainly assist future viewers.
Treat the Eco the right way, with a good measure of respect, tow if you like, maintain it often, and you will be a happy driver. Most of these problems are due to over-heating, poor maintenance, and unnecessary idling.
J - All comes down to maintenance, most of the time. Thanks for the insight.
So would a 2021 Wrangler with the 3.0 be prone to any of these issues when properly maintained? Any way to ensure it doesn't have the pre 2019 motor?
Proper maintenance and frequent oil changes will honestly go a really long way. No such thing as too frequent an oil change, especially when they are very cheap relative to the cost of the vehicle. A 2021 won't have a 2019 or earlier engine so you're all good there, a lot less to worry about on the newer models just keep taking care of it!
@@8020Media thanks for the response. Kinda hard to find an abundance of info related to this motor
M - Agreed!
Perhaps good one or bad one should be looking at the driver. My Ecodiesel cratered at 60,000 miles when after it was warm, I floored it. Thank God for the warranty. I usually baby the engine.
David - Sorry to hear this! What happened to it?
Dodge used the companies 2.8 4 cylinder in the 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty CRD. Very well made engine. Then put in the new canyon/colorado
Diesel - Thanks for sharing this insight!
Hello All! any review on 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel Gen 3?
Adrian - We don't currently have one, but we will add it to the list!
G - Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You can do whatever you want with the information we provide.
I believe the EGR and HPFP have been shown as recalls on these engines from FCA. Don’t see anything about a recall for Oil Cooler.
I believe the oil cooler was an extended warranty and not a recall. But only for 2014-2016 models.
yes but the HFFP has no date of completion.
J - Thanks for taking the time to share these insights.
Thought about getting one but found a 2001 24V Laramie 4x4 sport with 120k miles for $5,000….so got that instead. Non 53 block Cummins!
Murph - Probably a good idea!
@@8020Media I thought so!
5.0l v8 cummins begs to differ when it comes to reliability
22 - okay.
Fiat/Iveco has been making diesel engines for a very long time. Fiat has also cooperated with Cummins on multiple project.
Glass - Thanks for the insight!
Love to watch your video but the audio There's a little bit off.
M - Thanks for the feedback! This video was early on in this channel. We hope that you've seen audio improve drastically since this video.
weird my 2016 did 344k towing daily, zero issues besides recalls
Dang that's awesome! Must've gotten a good one
Thank you
Ed - Thanks for the feedback. We hope you found it helpful!
400,000 2015, ed, do a delete kit, emissions, truck performance 100%,no more issues, water pump, Mopar only, steel lines turbocharger
M - Well said! Thanks for sharing this. It will certainly be helpful for future viewers.
Dont forget the reluctor wheel.
Darby - Thanks for the insight! This will also help future viewers.
J - Well said! Thanks for sharing.
I have a 2017. So far, 120,000 miles i have been OK.
David - Thanks for sharing your experience! We've seen some good ones and some bad ones.
The Ecodiesel was not a clean sheet design by Chrysler. It was designed by GM and VM. Chrysler bought the engine design for next to nothing after GM threw it away.
Mark - Yep, thanks for sharing this insight!
After GM fielded for Chapter 11 LOL
The notion that Europeans don't build decent diesels is laughable as most cars and trucks over there are in fact diesel!! Should they have left the 3.0 overseas? Probably! Ford could have used the 4bt inline 4 platform and I think it would have been a better fit!
I've been around Cummins engines in marine commercial trucks and pickups and the 4bt is a stout lil power plant.
L - Thanks for the insight.
I have a 2021 3.0 owned since sept 2021 with not one f n problem
Mike - Great to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience.
So aftermarket oil cooler, aftermarket fuel pump, and EGR delete- good to go.
Nate - Basically, but we can't recommend deleting components.
@@8020Media I understand and thank you. Was just looking at maybe getting one and wanted to know what I was looking at to improved the service reliability of the truck
N - It would absolutely make it more reliable.
I have a 2015 ecodiesel and the engine blow up at 60k miles and is so expensive fix it
Josmany - So sorry to hear this... Do you know the reason this happened?
Do better with the audio. It was hard to watch this video with that quality of sound.
Daniel - Thanks for the feedback! Since this video, we have dramatically increased the quality of our audio and hope this is seen.
What about Izuzu Diesels
S - Which one's specifically?
Dodge? They haven't made a Dodge truck since 2009.
Tomato, tomato.
You can call a dog any name you want, its still a dog!

Talbot - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. They certainly don't build them like they used to, but we've had good luck with Cummins engines.
A diesel is madevto work, not haul kids and groceries from stop light to stop light. Very simple
Lousy audio
