Shrimp Food 🦐 10 Incredible Foods I Feed My Dwarf Shrimp!

  • In this video, we're diving into the world of essential shrimp food! Shrimp are fascinating creatures that play a crucial role as detritivores, which are a type of omnivore known for their "eat almost anything" attitude. They chow down on things like algae, decaying plants, leftover food, and more. But relying solely on scavenging isn't the best for their health. To keep them thriving, it's important to give them a diverse diet.
    As a shrimp enthusiast myself, I'll walk you through the various foods I feed my shrimp throughout the week. I've tested these foods over time and I'm sharing my insights with you. Keep in mind, there are other brands out there, so use what works for you.
    Here's what's on the menu:
    1. BacterAE by GlasGarten: This micro powder is like a nutritional boost for your tank. It adds microorganisms, amino acids, and enzymes, enhancing water quality and promoting biofilm growth - a shrimp favourite. I sprinkle a bit in my tanks a couple of times a week.
    2. Shrimp Baby by GlasGarten: A powdered food designed for shrimplets. Packed with protein, vitamins, and Omega 3 fatty acids, it's perfect for the energy they need for molting. This food forms a layer on tank surfaces, ensuring shrimplets get their meal.
    3. Mineral Junkie by GlasGarten: Soft pellet food loaded with essential minerals. It supports molting, shell formation, and slow growth for snails and other invertebrates. Just one or two pellets a week is enough.
    4. Shrimp Dinner by GlasGarten: A well-balanced pellet packed with nutrients for healthy development, vibrant colors, and successful molting. This is a mainstay in my shrimp diet rotation.
    I also share some tips on feeding other foods like powdered fish flakes, frozen brine shrimp, and Hikari Algae Wafers. Plus, I have a surprising bonus food but you'll have to watch the video to find out what it is! It's a superfood rich in carbs, minerals, and protein. A treat your shrimp, snails, and herbivorous fish will adore.
    Remember, moderation is key. Overfeeding can lead to water pollution. Observe your shrimp's health and behaviour to ensure they're thriving. And don't forget, researching your shrimp species is crucial for their wellbeing.

    I mix the powder foods first in a bottle with water and shake thoroughly. After that you can poor it in a good dose in your tanks. That way it wil be better spread over the whole tank and all the (baby) shrimp can find it easy.

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Take some Duckweed and boil it in some water (I usually use dechlorinated water). Boil it for approximately 2-3 minutes, scoop it out and put it in a bowl of cold dechlorinated water so that it cools down quickly. You will notice that the duckweed will sink to the bottom like in my video. After a few minutes of it being cooled down, scoop it out and put it into your tank.

    I have a 4g tank that i wanna get some shrimp & snails , i want to have 5 shrimps of each kind or should i get a couple of the same breed ?

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If you'd like to breed them, then one colour is recommended. If you just want to have a skittles tank with various colours, it doesn't hurt either; I'm building one as well so that I can place my less coloured ones in there from other tanks.

    I also use the GlasGarten line of foods that you mention. I have a ten gallon tank that has a young colony of Neocaridina, currently at 120 - 150 shrimp. Although I love the powdered food, the hardest thing for me is not to overfeed. I have a population of ostracods and use that as an indicator that I'm feeding the correct amount. If the ostracod population blooms, I cut back on the amount of food. Also, I don't use the scoop that GlasGarden includes in the jars of food. I picked up some micro spoons and I use those for feeding the powders. For me, that's easier to get the smaller portions. Also, when feeding the Shrimp Dinner2 and Mineral Junkie Foods, I cut up the pellets into smaller bits to help insure that more shrimp get food. My shrimp seem to be very aggressive feeders. Do you have an actual feeding schedule? For myself, I don't have a formal schedule but I insure that I feed Mineral Junkie once a week. I also rotate the GlasGarten line with Repashy Community Plus. My shrimp love Repashy and since I "make" it myself, I feel like I'm giving them a treat. Thanks for this video, its the first of your videos that I've watched.

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for the compliment! I don't really have a feeding schedule as pretty much all of my shrimp are in community fish tanks and so they get fed almost every other day (fish food). They do get the Dinner2 once or twice a week and Mineral Junkie once a week. As for the BacterAe and Shrimp Baby, I only throw in very small quantities of it once or twice a week, primarily also because I have Bamboo Shrimp that will benefit from the floating food particles. Dinner2 makes my shrimp go crazy, Mineral Junkie not so much. You're right about the scoops though, they are too big and smaller ones are required. I noticed that when feeding BacterAe a lot, my tank got string algae as there were too many nutrients in the water.

    • @shrimplycanadian

      Hikari is a good brand. I use their algae wafers but I've never used Shrimp Cuisine. Based on the reviews though, people seem to give it a 4.5/5 so give it a shot. Provide it to them in small amounts to see if they go for it. Also, let me know how it smells as a few say it smells pretty bad so seal the bag immediately.

    Is Dwarf Gourami and Golden Algae Eater (young ones) safe with shrimp

    • @shrimplycanadian
      @shrimplycanadian  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Golden Algae Eater should be able to get along with shrimp while it's young as it's a herbivore. I have never kept one but they do get up to 12" and could potentially eat baby shrimp accidently. I had Dwarf Gouramis with shrimp before but it depends on the fish as they are semi-aggressive similar to Bettas. If you plan to keep them with shrimp, maybe keep it with something around the same size like Amanos or Bamboo Shrimp as Red Cherry Shrimp could easily get attacked by them.
