There might be Nothing they won't eat!!!
But as well as every vegetable, flake, pellet and frozen food, mine do love to nibble on Duckweed roots, to the point where Duckweed struggles to keep up :)

@@AussieAquatic Haha, I think I've noticed that a little with my frogbit. I just upgraded my shrimp tank light, so we'll see if it's the low light or the nibbling shrimp is the problem.

@@GirlTalksFish my theory is that the shrimp are eating the soft and yummy growth tips of the roots. Fine by me :)

This is very timely for me. I've had my shrimp for about a month and at the same time accidentally acquired pond snails - which have completely eliminated all visible algae from the tank. So I've been experimenting with different shrimp foods. I recon I'm about to order some almond leaves and cholla wood. Thanks!

Last time I fed my tank boiled carrot, I noticed that it took a couple days for the shrimp and snails to start eating it. I think they were mainly eating the biofilm that grew on the carrot as it decomposed.
In fact I wrote this comment before I had gotten to the part of the video where you mentioned you fed your shrimp carrots! As a biochemist, I do think there is great theoretical justification for feeding carotenoids to shrimp. The conversion from one carotenoid to another really only takes a few reductions to go from a more yellow carotenoid to a more red one. Though, I should mention that I have no idea what the pigment in shrimp is (I should probably look into that). I'm curious to know if you've had any empirical boost in redness from feeding carrots!

Aquarium co-op has a video on Aqua Hana who imports fish and shrimp. They feed their shrimp carrots too and found the shrimp who are not typically red turn red!

I have a lot of floating plants and I found if I keep my lights on for more than 12 hours a day the other plants get the right amount of light and grow like a week and it doesn't seem to grow algae

    • @lukenelson556
      @lukenelson556 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's a pretty lucky situation, that way you can have your lights on for the entire part of the day when you're awake! Mine would grow too much algae, so I can't really watch my aquarium in early mornings and nights.

I don't have much experience with freshwater shrimp but at one time I had a pair of peppermint shrimp in a marine tank and I would feed tetra ruby flake food to the fish. The shrimp learned to climb up the plants and eat the flake food off the water surface. Amazingly after a few months those shrimp had the most fluorescent blood red coloration from the tetra ruby. Tetra still makes a cichlid flake food that looks similar to the tetra ruby. It might be worth crushing some up and feeding it to the freshwater shrimp.

i like to dice really small cucumber and carrot pieces and i’ll mix it with brine and blood worms, i’ll add equal amounts to a small freezer trey that are squares, then i’ll add a bit of water to it so it can freeze, i’ll drop 2 of them in on different parts of the tank every week as a treat, they love it!! note: only freeze a few weeks worth because the food tends to get freezer burn after a month or two and i don’t know if that’s good for the shrimp or not 🤷‍♂️

I have lots of biofilm and general plant "waste" in my tank but strangely I have basically no algae.
I use Indian Almond leaves a lot because I like to boil them to concentrate the tannins to add to the water since the other inhabitants of my tank are pygmy corydoras and neon tetras who like the darker water. As a bonus I don't have to wait for them to get waterlogged and sink, just cool down a bit and they can go right into the tank. The shrimp don't seem to mind the tannins and the water in my area is on the hard side so I don't have to worry about it getting too soft.
For feeding, the shrimp end up going for a lot of the same stuff I feed my fish which includes Hikari Tropical sinking wafers, Hikari algae wafers, freeze-dried brine shrimp, and black worm pellets. I also have Shirakura shrimp food, which they didn't initially seem to like (It's a VERY hard sort of wafer) but they go for it and eat it all within the day after it's soaked a bit. Other than that, I have some bladder snails in the tank and they like to eat those. I think they MAY be preying on the very small ones, but otherwise they immediately go for them if I crush some when I notice that the population of snails is getting too high.

I've noticed some other people in the comments say that their snails totally eat all the algae, so that could be reason!

Great video! I got my first 10 cherry reds on Friday. Thus far no interest in Hikari algae wafers (day 1) or the boiled carrots (day two). Today I tried a little frozen brine shrimp, and that they are nibbling on. They seem mostly focused on the live plants. Thanks!

I have hikari for my albino corydoras but noticed they have 2.7mg/kg of copper. Is this ok for shrimp? I know they need trace copper but I'm scared of giving too much and hurting them.

    Hello you!
Sp sorry I've been away for a moment. I'm not sure if you've seen my latest video, but I had a kinda scary health issue in regards to my vision, which has seen me have to take time away from the world.
I hope you're well, and keep up the great work! 😁🐡💙🌟🌈

Oh my goodness, I just watched your video and am so sorry to hear! My mom's going through cataract surgery soon, and it's been so hard for her, not being able to use her phone or drive. Praying for your vision right now, that you would receive healing and comfort in your time of need.
      🙏🙏🙏

@@GirlTalksFish Thank you so very much. Your support and kind words means plenty right now.
Looking forward to a little normality resuming. My eye health has been very poor for a few years now, and apparently I'm a medical mystery according to my eye doc.
I hope all goes well for your Mother with her surgery. I am on a waiting list for a similar surgery in my left eye, then out of nowhere my right eye plays up. I just hope things continue to improve.
      Thanks again!
