      "Being racist" or fascist or homophobic or whatever isnt a checkmark binary. You can "be racist" while having black friends, aou can "be homophobic" even if you dont see gay as an insult. Theres no one or two checkmark boxes that determine fascist yes/no. But a tweet saying "you cunt deserve to be shot" in order to defend heteroPride IN ITSELF deserves the harshest opposition, completely independently from the larger mindset of the person who made it.
      And on a personal level I completely dont understand why you would go to bat for someone making such a tweet, benefit of the doubt or no.

      that's the problem with modern society these days: ppl tend to see certain public figures as perfect and everything they aspire to be, but when said public figures do something that they don't agree with, that reality shatters. fans become toxic and disrespectful towards the PF they loved because they publicly made a controversial statement that goes very strictly against watever ideals the fans have. ig u could say the problem with social media can be summed up in one word: idealism

      One of the big problems, and there are many, is too many people feel their personal opinions are fact, or at least wish to impress upon others that their opinions are facts. This problem is compounded when it is a lie being spread around by many as though it is a fact. Is why, even though we have free speech, we are not free to commit slander or libel, for it illegal due to it can damage a person's life with the lie.
      I'm sure you have known the saying, "The pen it mightier than the sward." For words have real world real power. That goes for what anyone may say online about anything or anyone.
      The net is part of the real world. And what anyone may say or do in it, can have some very drastic real world consequences.

    Public perception failing to factor in truth doesn't just apply to our culture, but every culture that was or will be. Sure, social media increases the amount of public figures (who are judged for things that are not always factual), but this issue existed far before the internet, and will likely follow to whatever communication channels we create next.

    • @cliftut
      @cliftut 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would argue that at least local pockets of exception to this rule arise, but the very same problem means they don't necessarily get recognized for what they are since their images are subject to the same phenomenon, and the cheater strategy can arise anywhere, potentially causing an internal breakdown. You can have a very truth-oriented group or even organization, but once the stable core of dedicated and honest people is broken up or they pass away, confusion reigns supreme once again, and the reputation of the group potentially fails permanently.

    • @kirbyjoe7484
      @kirbyjoe7484 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The internet is unique due to its interactive nature. For instance, in addition to people's natural tendency to seek out information sources and other people they agree with, the way the algorithms are designed intentionally funnels people more examples of the sort of content they have shown a history of liking in the past. It rapidly becomes a self-perpetuating echo chamber that only tells people what they want to hear.
      30 years ago if you were some idiot who thinks the earth is flat you were isolated and alone in that opinion and most of the time those around you would eventually convince you of its foolishness. Now in 2021 if you are an idiot who thinks the world is flat you go online and find the 10,000 other idiots who think it's flat all the media they have produced that "proves" it. You join their flat earth echo chamber reinforcing the fallacious belief. It's similar to a cult. Essentially they are brainwashing themselves. It's the year 2021 and we are witnessing a radical INCREASE rather than a decrease in the number of ignorant fools who think the Earth is flat.
      It is all fun and games when it's a flat earther we can laugh at, but it stops being funny when start to see things like 80% of one of your major political parties believing transparent and blatant lies being championed by Qanon cultists on the internet. It stops being funny when people start getting murdered by these idiots.

      Social media are hyper-stimulants when it comes hierarchical group dynamics (aka "social warfare")

      This is sort of an issue with the phrase. Saying "it's okay to be white" implies that people are being told otherwise, the way "black lives matter" implies that some people believe they don't. One of these arose because of a bad history of racism in the United States (which is what the world revolves around) - you can tell which one. This phrase of "it's okay to be white" is often said in relation to the topic of racism directed at non-white people, ie the black lives matter movement, which equates saying "black lives matter" with "it's not okay to be white" - THIS is the racist bit. saying that ethnic groups who are systemically discriminated against are against white people purely because awareness is being raised about said systemic discrimination is wrong, sews distrust and leads to hate brewing.
      it IS okay to be white. you do not need to repeat it like you're under attack for being white. nobody is coming after you for being white.

Also I speculate that he also did these controversial statements so that he may indirectly separate himself from the game he created due to the backlash he got from 2014. People tend to judge people quickly without knowing that certain person's action outside social media. If you're open about anything, they'll cancel you. I commend his ability to come back and apologize for a mistake and really enjoyed following him on Twitter for many years. But also, I got super annoyed when the drama in his tweets just wouldn't stop. That was quite possibly never his intention, but I sure don't need that in my life either.
    Edit, a few months later: Just realized Notch has vocally supported QAnon in March 2019, which this video for some reason glanced over (even though tweets from around the same time are mentioned at 7:40, but it is then claimed transphobic tweets were the sole reason for MS' actions.) He even specifically said "I might be the most serious I've ever been" about QAnon... Y'know, I gotta say, I did not expect Celeste's music to wind up in a video about Notch...
    Okay, yes, I know Lena Raine composed both Celeste's soundtrack and Minecraft's Nether update, but it still caught me off guard. haha
    Edit: I also wasn't expecting Crash Thompson to wind up in this video either. >.

    It seems like Notch fell slightly down the alt-right pipeline, which is completely understandable in 2016-2017. He's probably better, and I doubt he was ever a bad person.
    11:23 This kind of "mob mentality" existed way before the Internet. Even if people couldn't express their opinions to the world as easily, word of mouth combined with media outlets still heavily influenced politics, and public figures have always had to try to keep their image clean. (Edit:) It's just that the Internet made slipping up so much easier for public figures, since the moment you click one button is the moment your image is inextricably altered. Edit 2: And, well, rumors and misinformation spreads so quickly that media outlets can't catch up.

      Nothing he said was wrong, and "alt-right" pipeline is just a derogatory political label used to underhandedly accuse someone of being bad or having bad opinions. I don't think he needs to be better, i think he was perfectly fine the way he is. He pointed out the hypocrisy the woke crowd has. And yes, the woke crowd do have hypocritically bigoted opinions.

    i think my main issue with this video is that all of your "positive" examples of Notch's takes don't just cancel out the bad ones. it isn't math. Most of your examples of his "anti-racist" or "pro-LGBT" takes were taken from headlines or articles from years before the tweets they supposedly contradict came up, which can easily lead one to believe that he's changed for the worse over the years (especially that take on critical race theory, that's pretty inexcusable). you seem to downplay a lot of what Notch says as just him "being honest" or "not conforming to a squeaky-clean, family-friendly persona" while completely ignoring that someone can do both of those things without resorting to racism or blatant transphobia
    i'm not just going to outright say i know who Notch is as a person because clearly i don't, and i never will, but the lens through which he *CHOOSES* to portray himself on social media does not make him a figure i respect at all. i'm not going to simply look past some of the terrible things he's said just because he made a game i liked a lot as a kid. i don't really see a main thesis or idea to this video that's any deeper than just "sometimes people say bad things on the internet, but don't judge them for it", which might be relevant if any of Notch's takes were taken out of context or have since been taken back, but none of them were. and i don't WANT to hate Notch, as i'm sure many replies to this are going to assume; i really do wish that the man who made my favorite game growing up was a positive role model and a cool guy, but i just don't see any evidence as to why i should believe that at all
