I discovered I couldn't do that after I watched Tobuscus do it years ago, in 2013. Being 12 I didn't know I had to install a mod at the time for it. Lol

I loved it when Notch made a post talking about the bethesda situation and at the end of it he said something like _"now I'm gonna go play some Scrolls. And by Scrolls, of course, I mean Skyrim"._
In one tweet, Notch completely annihilated any possible doubt that Bethesda might have had a point that another game company having a game called Scrolls would cause a confusion with Elder Scrolls. Absolutely no one thinks "Skyrim" when they hear "Scrolls" I get way more confused with The Outer Worlds and The Outer Wilds
Nice editing skills for the video man! Funny to see how Notch took to the challenge. I really like when you queued the music for the transitions, job well done!
Reminds me of that one time, when my parents bought me the game, but my friends were still pirating. So they asked me to send them the game files, turns out you already had to have a mojang account to play the full version, so all of them though the demo for 3 in-game days was something like "Build the best thing you can within the time limit, and if we like it, you get to play multiplayer"
Jump drive multiplayer was a neat thing me and my friends had discussed, but we were all programmers, so nobody was willing to plug a flash drive into their rigs.
and after that you have to plug the red wire into the socket to make sure the engine boots at launch. Wrap the green wire around it's coil that sits directly beside the A button. If everything worked according to plan you're device should show a thumbs up sprite. Plug the HDMI port into a monitor and wait three seconds. If it boots up on TV your in the good side. If it doesn't boot in less then 5 seconds quickly unplug. This can severely damage your TV and possibly start a fire
The site didn't host any data. It used Mojang's servers, just like a legitimate game client. On Reddit, Notch confirmed that the site was not illegal or against the TOS explicitly. Copyright wasn't a factor because no copyrighted work was being hosted. I'm sure the reason for Minecraft's updated terms of service, along with requiring you to accept the terms when hosting a server, was partially inspired by this debacle. I believe that the reason why it was not considered illegal was due to the fact that the site was not distributing anything that was copyrighted. I'm pretty sure that it downloaded the legitimate client from Mojang's servers and just tricked it into thinking that the user had a valid login. The client, just being a simple launcher that downloaded the actual game files from the Mojang servers, meant that there was no copyrighted information or data being hosted. The files were only downloaded upon the initial launch, and during any subsequent updates. The game files were stored on your machine after being downloaded from the servers, so it's not like the data had to be re-downloaded every time. Still, Minecraft for Free accounted for more than 10% of Mojang's server traffic, from what I remember Dylan telling me about the cease and desist email.
@@user-ch6iv2bn2j He didn't have a license but he didn't need one, the terms of service weren't explicitly forbidding something like this, they were updated afterward but it was an amicable request that was handled amicably by Dylan. Gosh, I forgot all about how Minecraft used to be a game you could play in-browser...it's been like 10 years, and java plugins on browsers has only been gone for like 3 years...I forgot all about that stuff. I also laugh, because I initially was given a SP Minecraft file back in high school (I think it was just a paid version my buddy bought, but just gave me the game file)...and that was the only way (at first) I was able to play Minecraft. I would eventually buy the full game and make an account when Mojang finally released the Minecraft full-game cards at the stores, and I immediately snagged one (because it was also cheaper at that point...the original price was steep for the lack of content at the time). Paid 26 bucks for it...one of the best 26 bucks I've ever spent. Cheers. Cool vid. Brought back great memories.
I remember playing in minecraft for free when I was 11! Even though it was a pirated version, that's what got me into minecraft for years to come. If it was not for that website I might not have ever played the game, as my parents were not able to pay for random video games.
As much as I get Mojang not wanting their game to be pirated for free. If I didn't play this pirated version as a kid I would have never gotten into Minecraft. Every bit of money that I ever gave Mojang for Minecraft and various adjacent products can be traced back to me playing this pirated version. I get pirating is bad. But giving free access to something can open the door to more money down the road. It's not just a loss for them.
I am pretty sure, Bethesda, being the sister company (both owned by Zenimax) of id Software (creator of the Quake series) could organize some Quake pros... I just find Notchs choice of ingame model funny..

This is how I first played Minecraft! I didn't realise at the time that it wasn't official, so I had a bunch of fun with it. (Clearly I wasn't reading the disclaimers on the page) Eventually I realised, and I ended up buying the game because of the fun I had with the beta 1.7 version they had on there. Not only that, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the official release was on beta 1.8.1 so there was a bunch of new stuff to do, and I was able to transfer my world to the official version no issues!
@@LegitSiForNow Why would that be special? it still was the original game only hosted for free. Thats no different to copy the world from one instance to another like a backup.
@@z3r0ut78 It is technically the original game, I'll give you that, but it was never hosted by any official source, just for free. In any reasonable world, an illegitimate save file should not work in the official game. But yet, in this case, it did.

I totally remember this website. Never knew it was owned by a team avo member! It’s small things like accepting a quake match that made Notch such a great figure in the gaming community. Great upload!
When I was super young, I heard about this website through the grapevine, and it was effectively my first exposure to Minecraft. I played through its peak, and the switch to hosting Minecraft Classic once they got shut down (though this is the first time I've ever heard about the Quake match). The disappointment once they switched to Classic was what made me beg my dad to buy Minecraft in the first place. It feels super weird to see this obscure little memory of mine from, like, second or third grade immortalized, since I thought this was an experience only me and the friend that told me about it had.
It's crazy to think that this website probably really helped with Minecraft sales and popularity. At its peak, it accounted for more than 10% of traffic on Mojang's servers. It was probably how many many people were introduced to the game, people who otherwise didn't have the means to buy it legitimately or the knowledge on how to pirate it. I think one of the coolest things about the site is that it technically didn't host any copyrighted data whatsoever, so it was for all intense and purposes legitimate, and not piracy. It Just exploited holes in the way the game was built and the terms of service.
@@TheRenegade... I'd be fine with "legal" "piracy" of old software. I still use a bunch of things I've bought back in the day, so they have to be installed from a CD, right, but cheap laptops don't tend to have CD mechanic thingies, which suck. It was challenging to find a working torrent for it. Then again, even if it were legal, it wouldn't help me in this case, right. My wish is more along the lines of "obligatory archival of old software," right. In regards to new stuff, that's hot take, definitely, because noone who ever tried to make anything would agree with that, but I believe that anyone should be free to try things before purchasing. That's what you do with anything you buy... except for food, I guess. Although sometimes you can try it! And while there are softwares with demos or lite versions, and bless them, it's not as common as it used to be. Or sometimes you have to give them all your personal information before getting the access, and how can you know if it's worth having your identity stolen, right? With things like ebooks, that's kinda trickier, because for stand alone the previews could be good enough, but sometimes it's just one chapter and I think you need at least 3 to get to know the vibe, y'know? But if you download a book, you probably gonna read it whole, and if you then decide it wasn't worth buying, then you kinda already stole it, and that's kinda sad, right. With comics, they're either very short or very long that it would take 1,5 book at minimum to get to know where the story is going, so "subscription service" would be better in this case - yeah, they're paid, but I'm looking at piracy from the view of someone who wants to find something worth spending money on, right. Don't really care about downloading of tv shows or movies... they'd be on tv eventually anyway... and if it's exclusive to a country or channel or something, welp, I guess. I wonder how tv shows can even make money? Seems like people don't really pay for them, just some change for the tv fees and taxes, how can that cover multiple tv shows? Ad money, too, of course, but idk it's bizarre and frankly, don't really care. And I wouldn't mind having free research papers because some journals ask for 30 usd for one work, and, like, what- It's just 10 pages and I want to read them in order to cite three words in my paper, asking for 30 usd is not nice. For the whole issue, maybe even for 5 works, right, but sheesh. Science is expensive, but the research paper sells aren't the main income for scientists so it doesn't have to be expensive. Most of them are lying in them anyway.
@@TheRenegade... yeah I mean it's not taking anything away from the creator except potential revenue. But for certain things it actually increases sales, because the people pirating it wouldn't have bought it without trying it first.

I had a cousin who played minecraft for free on his computer. This was how I was introduced to this game, and it did nothing but blow my mind on the level of freedom it has to offer. So I was disappointed when it got shut down before I could play for myself. By the time I got my hands on this game legitimately, the game was long since past it's hayday. i mean it's probably due to the times and how Minecraft wasn't that big of a game as it is now, but it's kinda nice knowing that creators of games were actual gamers and not y'know....just moneymakers. I imagine now there's a big email system where Jeb's emails are first checked to see relevancy and importance before they're sent to the big man himself and Jeb probably doesn't actually game so we'll probably never see this happen again.

Same!😅
As much as I get Mojang not wanting their game to be pirated for free.

Hello tinker man mick
Hi
Thank you!
@@R2Bl3nd Hot take: Piracy should be legal
And I wouldn't mind having free research papers because some journals ask for 30 usd for one work, and, like, what-
It's just 10 pages and I want to read them in order to cite three words in my paper, asking for 30 usd is not nice.

Oo i remember mineshafter squared. I only used it like for 2 weeks tho. I rmemeber there being private servers and you can use a skin but no one gonna see it and im sure the mineshafter enabled servers were full of people who bought the game anyways
Was just thinking about how I used to play on this site today and remembered your channel, cool to see a documentation of something I had to put in work to follow real time back in the day.
Notch is Swedish, they’re usually quite lax when it comes to piracy. I heard Notch said at an award ceremony for Minecraft in like 2011 pirating a game is just expected, but the updates are what keep people paying for and supporting a game. Something along the lines of it can’t really remember but it’s still cool.
He even said he might open source it if Minecraft would stop being profitable, looks like that is off the table, lol
If i recall well, he actually suported brazilians pirating Minecraft because he was against the big taxes that Brazil had with videogames at the time. I think the total tax count was more than the actual price of the game
@@pflasterstrips7254 I could see it going free to play with an optional season pass similar to cod
@@therookie5714 open source and free of charge are very different things

My entire middle school computer lab was powered by this website. Especially since we didn't have to download anything to the computers. I spent forever looking to see if anyone made a video about it. Thanks so much for the vid lol
This unlocked so many memories for me. My friends and I were 8/9 in 2011, and neither of us had the money for Minecraft so we would get on Minecraft for free on the weekends using the same computer and have so much fun.
I was 4 and using the website

Listening to this at work , Realizing you're playing Kirby music in the background at 3:30 and get absolute lost in a core memory of playing Fountain of dreams and amazing mirror on my GBA
Man, I remember being huge on AVO back in the day, even remembering this match, but didn't know it was because of this website. The teenage me is quite shocked to hear this, and we shall always remember that team AVO deserves ice cream.
God i miss avo, they deserve some ice cream :)
I used to play minecraft in my browser when I first got it. At some point, the browser had it's cookies wiped, and I lost my world, and I've been playing the desktop version ever since.
This is just amazing
It reminds me of when a Japanese art collector named Takashi Hashiyama had auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s play Rock Paper Scissors to decide which of them would get to sell his collection of paintings. Christie’s won with scissors, beating Sotheby’s paper.
Imagine making billions of dollars from a product that costs nothing to maintain and still refusing to give it away for free, instead doubling down on microtransactions.
This is an awesome story, thanks for sharing it Sal !!!
Still, I awe at how incredible this game was and still is to this day.
Oh boy, memories hits hard. I can still remember all those moment with my friends in minecraft. I used this site because my parents didn't want to pay. Eventually my grandpa bought it to me as birthday gift.
i mean it's probably due to the times and how Minecraft wasn't that big of a game as it is now, but it's kinda nice knowing that creators of games were actual gamers and not y'know....just moneymakers. I imagine now there's a big email system where Jeb's emails are first checked to see relevancy and importance before they're sent to the big man himself and Jeb probably doesn't actually game so we'll probably never see this happen again. Tho challenging Notch is definitely still an option of course
you’re probably right about automated emails, but Jeb was the carry for notch’s team for this match, saying he doesn’t game is wild
This is how I got into Minecraft, and in turn got all my friends into Minecraft, this is such a big throwback. Had to ask on Twitter if anyone remembered it, still remember the story of how notch beat that guy at Quake to take the website down. Memories.
Minecraft In Browser was amazing. So much fun memories there playing on the many different servers people created. Resources was limited but the creativity they made was insane.
Zombie Apocalypse, Lava Run, Creative, Capture The Flag, etc.
So much friends made, so much friends lost..
I really wish ClassiCube had more players playing it. So I could relive the day of 2011 to 2012, before Mojang killed it off.
Ok bud
Lava survival was so good, I could play for hours. That was how I first experienced Minecraft.
Very well-paced and even breakdown of all the context needed to appreciate this contest. Very good job!
The music is great, wow, a thrilling, and a bit sad story! but atleast Minecraft still lives on! good video man!
Notch is awesome for accepting the challenge. A true gamer at heart.
He's certainly has his fair share of G A M E R moments
Makes me like him even more then
