The Tragic Tale of Notch (Markus Persson, Minecraft)

  • Minecraft wouldn't be the same without Notch. Well, mainly because he created it. In the beginning, Notch was considered a god, but after cashing out of Minecraft in a $2.5 billion dollar deal with Microsoft, the expectation of life following such might have been happiness, fulfilment and satisfaction, however, the reality for Notch ended up being quite the opposite.

    It's fascinating to see how Notch's journey in Minecraft mirrors his own life. Building a successful empire, but ultimately feeling empty and directionless. It's a reminder that true fulfillment comes from more than just material wealth.

      I know if I was in his position, I'd be doing nothing but catching up on my reading. That's how I filed time in my youth, and it's what I do when I have time now.
      Notch's problem is he never learned how to stop finding problems. Just waiting on the other shoe, or feeling like his time should be filled because of the BS American work ethic.

      @@GizmoMaltese - we need a heterosexual pride day just as much as we need a gay pride day.
      Also, of course there are groups with more privilege than others, but many of those groups have gotten there because someone before them sacrificed to allow a better future, or that there was a conflict with both groups trying to be the one on top and one of those groups won.
      I will be the last one to say that any group "deserves" the privileges they have, but to say they specifically DON'T deserve them still only works on the assumption that there is some universal moral right for everyone to have equal privileges. We all have a right to PURSUE happiness, that never implied a right to have that happiness given to us.
      So certainly we don't have a perfect and just society, but we wont get to a perfect and just society through handouts.

    Honestly I think what he really needs is a small group of friends who just genuinely enjoy hanging out with him, regardless of his money. If I could give him advice, I'd say maybe try going on some online multiplayer game with a username that doesn't reveal who you are, and just try to connect with someone. Maybe get a dog so you have a responsibility to care for something again. Hell I'd even be down to game with him, we can make jokes we really shouldn't be making and talk about life while playing Starcraft or Halo or something I dunno. I just hate seeing the guy like this, Minecraft undoubtedly had a huge impact on my life, and is still to this day one of my favorite things to play in my free time. So Markus if you somehow happen to stumble across my comment, there's meaning out there for you somewhere bro, you just gotta start looking.

    Funnily enough "creative mode" in Minecraft is a perfect analogy for his life. Yeah you've got all the building blocks, but suddenly your existence becomes meaningless and you zoom around not knowing what to build, whereas in survival mode the task of surviving dictates your life a meaning and direction.

    The only problem is he's not a businessman, but a game developer. That combined with his inability to face suffering outside of work, or taking measured risk, makes it even harder for him to enjoy what would be a dream for most. Regardless of what he said, I love the guy. Unlike the criminal celebrities and predator elites we praise, the worst this man did was tweet conservative talking points out of frustration, and the best he did was unlock the creative potential of every child who enjoyed Minecraft. I'm not creative at all, but Minecraft was one of the first times I realized that only I controlled my destiny, and only I had the power to make myself grow. Notch will always be the best thing that happened to Minecraft, even if all of us moved on to the future.

    • @technoguyx
      @technoguyx 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You're so real for calling out celebs and elites like that, they're way less deserving of fame compared to Notch. Can't agree with his inflamatory opinions (and it's often isolated or angsty people who hold extremist or bigoted views like that, in my experience) but the way Twitter and Microsoft pretty much erased him from Minecraft's history was pretty awful and would affect anyone's psyche.

    • @digitoxsynth1905
      @digitoxsynth1905 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@technoguyx I totally agree with you on that one. I don't agree with the current Notch's comments and point of views, but I can appreciate that he was able to bring one of the most iconic video games to ever live. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have fond memories of playing Minecraft with my family members.
      Just like you said, the way that Twitter and Microsoft essentially tried to erase him from Minecraft's history is a bad way to go about it (in my opinion) because he is the literal man who is responsible for the game's creation in the first place. Imagine an alternate timeline where there is a world without Minecraft, that would be weird, and many people would be doing different things.
      Even if Notch isn't the person who I have grown to be fond of over the years, I can still credit him as the original creator of Minecraft, not Microsoft or whatever.

      I thought it was common knowledge that wealth makes people severely depressed. It’s like finishing every task in an open world game but still being trapped in it afterwards with nothing to do. Covid kinda showed a lot of us what the rich people lifestyle feels like. “No work”, almost no honest social contact, way too much free time but realizing that you can’t really do anything with it etc. Just that they have a bunch of money. The middle class lifestyle is definitely the best imo. You have a comfortable lifestyle but it doesn’t feel like there is nothing left to archive. Being too poor or too rich is just torture (by that I of course don’t mean to say that being very rich and being very poor are in any way equally shitty but you get my point).

The joy you achieve building I.e a massive structure when compared with every other player having to go through the struggle and journey of sourcing the material themselves or as teams to build that same structure is 0 to none.
      I feel like selling ur stake in the passion project that brought you happiness is just going to put you in a situation of trying to replicate that joy and quickly becoming desensitised to what most others would call “luxury” to the point where gaining an extra i.e. yacht would bring no extra joy but losing one would drastically affect the ‘normalised’ lifestyle you’ve become accustomed to.

Where someone who starts off with potential just becomes corrupted by success and their original passions have become forgotten both by themselves and those who knew them. I get why people still say they respect him regardless of what he does,but really just because of a game?

      @neztech. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      @@pure2291 of course you can do all of that, money shouldn't be connected to you getting better at sports or you going to the gym. that's exactly what I was trying to say when I said work on yourselves. while money can be a problem for people such as notch because he has done nothing since gaining said money, just because you've gotten extra funds doesn't mean you should give up on what you like doing (such as, game development in notch's case). what he lacked was dedication and an end goal, and he spiraled down into what he is today. so really what it boils down to is the type of person you are, which notch got the short end of the stick in that respect considering he decided to do nothing. in this regard, it is more correct to say "he has a lot of money" then to say "he has everything", which is undoubtedly false.

    The problem of indie game developers is when they have created a “perfect” game is hard to reach again that perfection. The bar is set so high from the start, anything they try to make isn’t gonna reach it. People expect from them to create the next masterpiece but get disappointed and angry if their work doesn’t meet their high expectations. I think it would be hard for someone like Notch to create something new to match the success of Minecraft, something that not only people but also he would be satisfied.

      I agree with what you say about Markus and how he's handling all this. But the fact that he broadcasted his emotions like that, even if it really did hurt some people (I'm talking about the controversial stuff), showed us this lesson of richness not being related to being successful. Honestly, I think the fact that he showed us firsthand the product of that, of his life choices and how that kind of success affects a person, is one of the best things to come out of this ordeal. Notch wasn't letting ghosts out into the world, he was giving us the opportunity to learn. Very apparent in some of his tweets, especially the one(s) including something along the lines of "the problem with being successful" or "the problem with having no problems."
