  • How do we improve our relationship with our children? Why do our children make us feel so irritated at times? And what do we do if we’ve acted in a way that we shouldn’t have? I’m joined this week by psychotherapist and author, Philippa Perry, to talk about all these issues and more. We discuss why culture gets in the way of our natural instincts and why she believes that allowing your child to “cry it out” can be harmful. We delve into the effect that technology is having on our relationships and discuss screen-time for kids. Philippa explains that although we all get it wrong at times, it is how we repair our mistakes that is key.
We also discuss why being authentic with our children is important for a close connection. Finally, Philippa shares her tops tips, which I have started putting into practice already! At the heart of Philippa’s advice is connection and the advice she gives is applicable to all our human relationships - not just those with our children! I hope this conversation helps you deepen the human connections in your life.

Wonderful conversation. I totally understand the friction with parenting the way the "culture" wants versus instinct. I parent from an "instinctive" manner and do my best to be authentic with my son (soon to be 7). I do slip up at times (i.e. lose my temper) when my resources are low but I will own up to my less than ideal behaviour and we learn together. What I find difficult is talking about my parenting style with other parents; they tend to roll their eyes at me or don't know how to engage in the conversation. So I tend to keep quiet. I love this stuff and I think if we all had a chance to reflect on our behaviours and "fessed up when we messed up", perhaps we'd have better interactions with others on a daily basis.

    Just discovered this in 2021
    Unbelievably good
Helped me feel better as it's inline with stuff I've often believed in especially around responding to children.
In the past I've been called a hippy," bad" for getting sucked in to my.kids needs, being a helicopter parent, being over protective etc. But I've always maintained, intuitive responses are how to parent!

Oh goodness, I needed this. I needed the verification that I’m trying to do better and now I have more tools to do that. This was healing, encouraging, and important. The repairing broken situations is vital for children.

I find, as a Grandparent, I naturally tend do these things and definitely reap the rewards. They behave much better for me, than their parents but I think it’s easy, as I have the time!

Awesome interview. Thank you for that. One quick point I wanted to make though. To say you understand someone you need more than just a psychological overview of that person. Check out Robert Sapolsky's lecture on human behavior. Keep it up!

I could be feeling like a train just ran over me but I would go to my daughter at night if she was crying , circa 38:00

you can paint on a pad, you can draw on a pad, you can read on a pad, you can write on them and express those daydreams in story and writing... it's not a pen and paper, but I am sorry that you can't see this
