Stanford Psychologist Reveals The Most Important Thing To Do When Depressed | Kelly McGonigal

  • One of the positives I’m seeing during the current lockdown is many people’s renewed appreciation for getting out, active and connected. Having to stay home is making us really value that small window in our days when we can step outside to exercise, interact with nature and say a (distanced) hello to people we pass on the street or in the park.
    For that reason, I think you’re going to love listening to my guest on this week’s podcast. Kelly McGonigal is a US research psychologist, a lecturer at Stanford University and an author.
    Kelly and I talk about the importance of music for movement, and how moving with others can improve social connections and foster a sense of support and community. We discuss how going beyond what you think you’re capable of - whether that’s an endurance event, lifting heavy weights or taking on an epic hike in nature - can provide a spiritual experience that changes the brain in positive ways.
    If doesn’t have to be hard, though. Kelly explains how even the simplest of movements provide an immediate reset for your mood and brain chemistry. And she shares ground-breaking new research that shows how repeatedly contracting any muscles, through continuous exercise, releases antidepressant substances called myokines that scientists have dubbed ‘hope molecules’.
    Whether you’re someone who wants to move more but isn’t sure where to start - or you’re already a confirmed fitness fanatic - I think you’ll find this conversation uplifting.

    I loved this interview. I struggle with depression and I am “young” but have no energy and am incredibly sedentary, 2020 has only worsened it. I do love to dance, I’m also considering getting roller blades. This was such an encouraging and interesting interview. I am sharing with my friends and family. Thank you!

    Even in my youth I was so limited (especially stamina-wise) but I was very fortunate to have it dealt with (medically) and I was able to, forced to by poverty, I had to ride a bike, I became a runner, and now a walker. Now, I am able to, need to, spend each afternoon moving.

    Very inspiring interview and reframing of exercise culture. That’s exactly why I started Essentrics. The focus with Essentrics is helping your body to rebalance so you’re able to physically engage with all the other things you want to do in life. What is also great is that it’s accessible to all ages in a way that some modalities are not. I’m 65 and I’m in better shape (mentally and physically) than I was at 45, running and going to the gym 4-5 days a week. Love your interviews! 💖

    Here in Malaysia the lockdown rules don't permit getting outside to exercise. I live in a n apartment, so I did a bit of rearrangement of furniture, so that I could make sure that I can walk. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes listen to podcasts and youtube videos and sometimes I read. Last week I crossed 100,000 steps for the week.
    I also try to get in some HIIT body weight and movement a couple of times a week.

    I’m 66 and although I’ve had a busy life, the past two years of covid restrictions have destroyed my mojo - even the thought of going for a stroll makes me feel tired. Lots of music reminds me of my late husband so it tends to make me sad, not energetic.

    Kelly doesn't look old enough to have amassed this much neuro knowledge. Endocannabinoids. Hmm.... I ordered the book in the hope that there would be a deeper explanation of runner's high/endorphin flow. I live for that feeling and the way I love getting it is via lifting weights. I do it Arnold Scharzenegger style: deep, intense focus while performing the movement - I'm literally inside the muscle. When I was younger, it was about my body and competing. Later, it became almost like a spiritual thing. You can also get that 'flow' via creativity, such as playing piano. I really enjoyed this podcast and only wish you would have asked questions and let Kelly talk a lot more.....just sort of had her expand on stuff rather than moving into your story, as good as they were.

    • @DrChatterjeeRangan
      @DrChatterjeeRangan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Appreciate your feedback.. Agreed. re. creativity. Thanks also for your comments on my conversation style. These are conversations rather than interviews so don't tend to follow the strict question and answer format. Thanks so much for watching.

    What about all of us who, through life-long experience (from school to exercise gurus) feel 'exercise' like total body nausea. I'm so OVER being preached at by people who chose a life of exercise because they like it. You are so (reasonably) critical of bias in research, why can't you see past self-selection bias in exercise pushers
