How I built 9501 GWR 0-4-0 Pannier Tank - OO Gauge

  • Making your own locomotive from scratch is alot of fun and Improving upon the original design from a year ago is very satisfying.
On this video we document the process of making this updated model and share the process with you. I have really enjoying making this locomotive for my model Railway and hope you have enjoyed watching the video.
The loco is a ficticious design which is based off the 0-6-0 Pannier tank engines that we all have a soft spot for.

Stop knocking what you have done. It’s amazing. Who cares what the rivet counters say. Keep up the fantastic modelling .

A fantastic little model there, excellent work.
At around 10:30 you mentioned that no such engine as a four-coupled pannier such as this existed. Well sir, I am delighted to introduce you to "Dorothy", ex-P&M no.5 and ex-GWR no.795. Built as an 0-4-0ST by Brush Engineering in 1903 (the same Brush that would go on to build the famous class 47s fifty years later), it was employed by the shunting contractor Powesland & Mason at Swansea harbour, being taken into GWR stock upon the company's absorption in 1924. Renumbered to 795, it was rebuilt into an 0-4-0PT with a new Swindon boiler in 1926, being sold into industry about 1928-1929. It worked into the 60s under the National Coal Board, gaining the name Dorothy somewhere along the way. Googling "GWR 795 0-4-0" turns up a few images. I'd link a photograph but my last attempt at this was deleted.
To cut a long story short, your little engine has premise to say the least!

Sorry to contradict you but there really was a GWR 0-4-0PT - No 795 which was rebuilt from a Powlesland & Mason saddletank in 1926. It was a small, outside cylinder loco but didn't last very long on the Great Western and was sold into industrial service in 1928 finally being scrapped in 1962.
I like your model and am very much relieved that there are still scratch builders around... Keep up the good work

An excellent model Tris, well done, it runs beautifully which is testimony to the care you took building the chassis and gearbox.
Don't pay any attention to the Luddites who criticise your use of 3D printing, its just another medium and it gets a good result.
There are other channels who get knocked for scratch building using newer technologies and its about your attention to detail that counts.
3D printers have made modeling affordable, and you are clearly showing the versatility.
    Keep it up sir !

Love it Neal. Very well done. I haven’t got a 3d printer, but I do love doing my own custom stuff. At the moment I’m working on Hornby Dublo 3-rail. Most of it I’m keeping original. But I’ve just been working on a Dublo Duchess of Atholl. As it was very tired I had no regrets stripping it back to bare metal and giving it a full refurbishment and repaint. Dublo afficionados will have heart attacks. It’s been finished in LMS 1946 expérimental blue as 6234 Duchess of Abercorn. With the détail picked out and wheel rims blackened it looks incredible. And certainly not a 70yr old toy !
This Pannier is just perfect !
I particularly like your printed numberplates.
6234 got nameplates and smokebox numberplate made up on PowerPoint and printed on paper (I can’t justify the cost of etched plates), to my surprise once fitted and varnished they easily look as good as etched plates.

It looks fabulous! As for doing things the old way, I have a couple of books from Popular Mechanics, the turn of the 1800's into the 1900's that had "projects for boys" it tells you how to make your track out of wood and lay metal on top, how to make your armature and wind the motors how to cut out wheels from wood and put metsl tires on them. I suspect most of the people saying "Why don't you do things the old way?!" Would really rebel about doing things the real "Old Way" if they had to do that for their layout. Imagine if they went to a doctor who used medieval medical practices "leeches, leeches for everyone!!" You keep doing what you are doing, you do it well.

I love the baby Pannier, it's adorable. Very interesting to see the process of building a model like this from scratch, as this is the first time I've sat down and watched a full build of a model engine, but I have to say it is very interesting to see it all come together with the way all the parts look and how precise they have to be. @@OONeal What I've found is good for glue 'n glaze is to squirt some onto a piece of card, then use a cocktail stick to apply it to the windows. Sometimes it can help to wait until it gets a bit tackier so that it doesn't run out of the window!

well done Tris , didn't realise you did the brass-work too !? love your pannier tank , very much my choice for model rail . I think a mistake people make is going for the BIGGEST TRAIN you can squeeze on the layout and let's face it , how many of us have the space for a large layout (Unless your Pete waterman ) I wouldn't worry about it being prototypical , it just looks RIGHT . If someone didn't build one , well, they shoud've . The Japanese have a concept "Chibe" for something small and cute -like your 0-4-0 pannier >all about shape and proportion .

A great job using advanced modelling methods--CAD, 3D printing, CNC machining, and etching. Congratulations! Tamiya acrylics have an alcohol base rather than water and can be thinned with IPA. They are very well regarded, especially for airbrushing, and have good pigments. Hand brushing them is more of a challenge, though. The model railroad content creator Boomer Diorama has several videos using them. Cheers from Wisconsin!

I have tried such gearboxes, on and off, from the late 1960s to the 1970s, but never had a satisfactory result; it always resulted in 'hunting' or going easier one way but with less efficiency the other way. With all my scratch-built models, I find the old way the most reliable - a low-geared gear with the worm acting directly onto it (the mesh created by the temporary insertion of a cigarette paper). I never worked out what the problem was with these solder-up gearboxes, however, with this little engine, its tiny drivers require a very small final drive gear wheel.

Thank you for taking time to explain your experiances to me. I will be trying more of these gearboxes over time and will build more of an opinion and report back on a future video.

I like your video explaining the process of how you made the model and I love your 0-4-0 pannier tank engine it looks adorable. Also can you make a video on how you can make your own 0-4-0 pannier tank engine or something.

Tris, you've inspired me very much. I don't have a 3D printer, CNC machine or your years of experience, but as you pointed out, it's not about that - I'll have fun trying to put something together that I gives me a sense of satisfaction. What you said at the end suggests that you've had some criticism - please do disregard and just keep on doing what you do... and please keep sharing it too! Any criticism says far more about the people who offer it than about what you've achieved. This project is truly wonderful. I've subscribed and I'll be following what you do next.
PS You've probably already tried this, but I'd be inclined to try polishing the glazing with toothpaste... might work if you haven't already tried it?

The end result is enough, it stands alone and speaks for itself. It’s more than fantastic and jaw dropping, a model that you would think was made by the big companies…. The stages you have taken us through the video are brilliant, the journey you have made over time to be able to produce and make this are inspirational, when you have the time to spend doing this it’s efficient as well as everything else. Brilliant, all best Marc. Looking forward to your next project.

You may find that coating the clear resin with a gloss varnish helps.
On the odd occasion I've tried it, I smooth the surface with a "restorative" polish (Brasso might work, I use a car polish)
Then paint with gloss varnish. Any plans to release the STL files?

    • @OONeal
      @OONeal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I must get around to learning CAD for 3DP.
It's good to make use of your time whilst away, using CAD.
I like taking risks with my model making, I've made mistakes, but learnt from them and other times there have been happy accidents. It's made me a better modeller. When moving up a scale, for layout models, I had to learn what to include and what to leave off for the sake of diminishing returns etc too👍😊

  • @BR45723

Seeing how the coupling rods were etchings, that got me thinking:
Would an upgrade kit for the Hornby GWR 101 loco be doable? Brass etchings of the correct coupling rods for the model to make it look less toy-like and more like an actual model.
I’d like to design something like that but I’d have no idea where to begin
