    An excellent tutorial on engine repair, complete with suspense and drama! Bravo on your editing skills. This very much reminds me of TV shows here in the US that take an engineering project (ship building, bridge maintenance, etc.) and make it dramatic, with a mini-crisis just before each commercial break, yet with a successful conclusion. Very enjoyable, Sam. Cheers!

    Man what a great series every loco has me hoping they can be frankensteined back to life and shows the level of competency and passion this guy has for the hobby.
    On a side note Samtrain's Engineering Works must be good because the scrapman is probably the most evil contraption I've ever seen you create and you have to so a 'Salvage or Scrap' Halloween special with a loco that would be a mission impossible that only igor frankenstein himself could pull off saving

Excellent idea, can you have a longer video which shows more of what and how you doing the fixes, know many of the repairs and services have been done before but any thing or tips always help. Keep up great videos, look forward to next reviews. New hornby pendolino? Old tooling but new livery… all best Marc

    The 57xx Pannier tank is my favorite non-American steam locomotive (ergo, Duck is my favorite Thomas character). They look so proud and professional. It would have broken my heart to see the Scrapman get his paws on this one, so I'm especially glad to see it salvaged.

    Hello and love your channel. I use to fix PCs and laptops which have many small parts like model trains. Hello Sam, more news from the US side of the pond. I’ve now obtained a Bachmann “Baldwin modern 4-4-0” from eBay. It was used on eBay, but was a good price, and in great condition, and right out of the box, it fired up with sound. Not as big, or pricey as the Broadway Limiteds, but still a welcome addition to the collection. Keep up the awesome work

    Enjoyed the video. Glad you got this one fixed. I have the replica railways version which I believe is the same which I bought in the mid 1990's. I quite like the split chassis for it's simplicity. Thanks for showing cheers Paul.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing Paul - yes that's right it'll be the same/similar! The split chassis would be a very good/simple design if only the axles were more reliable and motor isolation was a bit easier... it's just not a design that works very well these days when DCC is the name of the game!

    Mainline was a standout brand when they suddenly arrived from Palitoy in the late 70s/early 80s.
    I still have two J72 models that have been part of my layout since they were bought new in about 1982. Both still work perfectly reliably and have has little maintenance in that time - NEVER opened the motor - and have been running regularly at model railway shows at least three times annually - except 2020.'
    This year, 2021, I have attended two layout shows and have another on October.
    Wonder why people seem down on the "split chassis" type systems in these locomotives?

  • @SammoKarm
    @SammoKarm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm surprised that you said it is the best you have ever seen one of these run. My Bachmann Panier is a truly good runner, even at slow speed and has no wobble. I was so happy with it, that I tried to put sound into it, but that was too much to ask as there wasn't room for the larger decoder unless I wanted to put in in the cab, so failed on that one.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bachmanns are a bit better as they used better motors... the Mainline locos I've had in the past are very ropey indeed! And this one only wobbled on the rolling road... perfectly good on track! Yeah the split-chassis designs aren't great for DCC... it can be done, but it's not worth the trouble if you ask me!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Amazing job done here ! I was considering buying some non-runners on ebay to have a decorating shelf with some trains, but if you can turn back a shelf queen into a running engine... Mmmm, except one with missing parts, which kind of second-hand engine might be really unsalvageable ? Destroyed gears, burned up motor, kinked axles or wheels, broken chassis... Have you seen one so badly damaged that it cannot be salvaged at all ? That might exist...

    I suppose you fed the Scrapman the instructions out of pity for starving him for so long. Anyway, I wish I could be this good at cleaning these things. I already broke a couple locos in my attempt to clean them. I even gimped my Baldwin 10-12-D a bit after removing the base keeper plate (although Bachmann's decision to attach the pickups to it is the one major flaw in an otherwise good model.) I just wish cleaning them were easier.

You still had 6 minutes to polish the handrails yet declined to use the available time to completely polish them. You have done that before with another model... handrails left half done and yet spare time was available. Come on chum... lift your game!

    Poor Scrap Man. This could have a second season where you take on other modelers. That would be fun to watch and give bragging rights to the winner. You could have two locos of near equal disrepair. Have your competitor choose first then complete. Just an idea.

    The evil scrap man should make an appearance at one of the upcoming Hallowsteam events being held at various heritage railways in the UK - now that would scare the kids!

    Would making new hand rails out of wire be allowed if the wire was spare stuff you had?

    Wait, your selling them afterwards!? I beg you please keep the Flying Scotsman that’s there, it’s a lovely looking model and I would love to see it on your railway more often!

    • @SamsTrains

      Yeah most of them are being sold! The Scotsman is lovely, but I already have one just like that... so no need for another! :D

    Hey, another of Salvage or Scrap. Great video. Activating the time o matic makes me laugh. I have tried fixing a mainline rebuilt patriot but it's split chassis is horrible, it's sat in a plastic tub in pieces waiting to be fixed.

    Locos in that state were parked up at the back of sheds throughout the later 1950s, but with sacks tied over their chimneys.

    Instead of giving your broken unfixed models to the scrap man, you should use them as scrap dressing, and maybe make some look rusty and tie them onto flatbeds and make a diesel haul them, as if they look like they’re going to the scrap yard.

    Ok so I know there's a time factor here but here's a little secret if you soak your steel parts in fresh lemon juice it takes away all the rust, it's slow acting so it takes a day or two but they come out looking great and it's not as severe as using a stronger acid! ....... beats grinding such tiny parts

    There should be a salvage or scrap epilouge that's just a running session of all the locos that made it, that'd be epic
