- Headed over to Blue Bell Railway and enjoyed a day going up and down the line. I came across a second hand LNER V2 by Bachmann in one of the small shops on the platform.
On this video we takle adding tender pickups to the loco to improve its running and add some very nice sound by YouChoos DCC Decoder by Zimo to run around my Model Railway.
I hope you all enjoy the video and possibly learn something from it.

Master craftsman ........ thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ron
Great video Tris. Liked the inserts of the Bluebell Railway in between your work. It worked well for me. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Thank you Roy, I'm glad you liked it. I hope to bring enjoyment with the videos.
Hi, fantastic upload, I really enjoyed watching your video👍👍Atb, Martin
Glad you enjoyed it
Great work and very interesting. Cheers
Thank you!
Hi Tris. Many thanks for doing another great video. Very interesting I thought. Loco looks fantastic by the way. Also good to see you on the Hornby Mind stream last Sunday. Nice terrier too. Many thanks again. Take care. Regards Jaeson
Thank you, yes it was nice to be included. Take care!
Oh the wonderful close ups of the real WORKING DETAILS of real Live Locomotives , LIKE the model work you are sharing 👍👍🙄
Thank you Jack!
Cracking job, liked the story telling between the visit and the V2 improvements
Thank you 😊 I’m glad you liked it
Amazing patience and work finally pays off...
Thank you David!
What an awesome job on that model Tris! Thanks for another great video!
Thank you Jade 😊
Went to the Bluebell Railway a few years ago. Super Railway and very nostalgic with the green and cream colours on the signs and station buildings. Nice show Tris.
Thank you I am glad you liked it.
First video I've seen on your channel; I like the format you've taken on showing repair clips and clips from your day out, not seen this format before, keep up the good work! Your V2 is a lovely model, I bought the same model but BR black; the BR green is nice but I already have a Triang Hornby Scotsman in BR green, so thought it just looked too similar, personal preference but I think the black suits it slightly better anyway!
You did a great job there Neal, I'm afraid I've stopped buying Bachman steam locomotives (not diesel) ,I always wanted a B1 and bought a split chassis version, it wasn't long before the wheel centre's went then the chassis moved apart when running, the second hand dealer I bought it off took it back and sold me the later version, the coupling rods kept jamming up so that went back, I swapped that for 3 over 40 year old Airfix class 31s , they have run on my garden railway without problems, none of my Bachman steam locomotives are serviceable now, I find the best locomotives are Wrenn as detail isn't as important outside, thank you for your video Neal.
I understand, I hope you keep enjoying your Garden Railway. Take care!
I used to be a volunteer at the Bluebell! Have you thought about soldering on unravelled paper clips? These make pretty good pickups, you just have to get them thecrightvyension to avoid excessive friction against the wheels.
I haven’t but that founds like something worth trying
Great work Tris. I found your use of the You Choose DCC system extremely informative and gives me the confdence to install the ones I have into my Engines. Must visit the Bluebell Railway in 2022.
Thank you Ian 😊 I’m glad I can help you 😊
Really cool in all respects, keep up the good work Tris
Well done tris on the tender pickup and weathering. The loco looks awesome. Brilliant jobs sir. Lovely footage of Bluebell railway too. 👍👍 Cheers Ian.
Thank you Ian!
I bought a Castle class at Horsted Keynes - what a transformation on your V2! The dulled rods especially look very convincing
Thank you!
Great bit of engineering there tris with the old model shame about the wheels. Blue Bell railway what a place enjoyed the footage. Was great to bump into you at the gets weekend. Take care kind regards Gary Leicester Station and T.M.D
Thank you Gary, I am sure I will get some replacements oneday. Yes it was good to meet you too. Take care!
I think the V2 has three cylinders with cranks set at 120, 120+alpha, 120-alpha, (because the inner cylinder is inclined at alpha degrees). I think that means that there are six beats per revolution of the drivers. Also, the beats are slightly unevenly spaced because of the uneven crank settings. That means that there should be six beats of the engine per revolution of the drivers, with slightly uneven beats. Some call this the Gresley Beat. The Zimo chip won't let you replicate the slightly uneven beat, I believe, but it will let you set six beats per revolution. Great video, by the way, very interesting.
Thank you that’s very interesting I need to play more with the programming and gain some confidence in setting such things. Thank you for taking the time to comment
The sound on the loco sounds awesome. It doesn't sound tinny like alot of other locos I've heard. Fantastic job bud.
Thank you Mitchell!
Great video once again Tris. I really enjoy watching you make things to solve a problem..very inspirational. Stay safe and well, Chris
Thank you Chris, that’s a great message ☺️ I enjoy making things and problem solving and it’s great to know you enjoy watching it, take care 😊
Nice video Tris. I would say the upgrades to the loco are worth while it certainly turned out very good with the sound and upgrades and weathering ect. The Blue Bell Railway looks like a great place will try go there in the future. thanks for another great video.- Nicholas.
Thank you Nicholas
great to be able to do your own CNC parts, good job
Thank you, yes it comes in hand 😊
I know 😅this was a while ago now, but after watching your narrow gauge series you have done more recently have gone back to catch up with where you got to with the loft layout.
For the q class unfortunately there is no rtr model available currently that I know of. However south Eastern finecast produce a white metal kit which is quite nice. Available from squires these days. 😊
Usually the wheel problem is the centre part of the axel has split. You can buy a set and it includes one with a drive cog on it. I have a few of the split chassis and it is a common problem. Got mine from Peters Spares.
Thank you Duncan! I will be looking into it.
I really enjoy you channel
I have an old Bachmann V2 and have the same problem with the wheels. Apparently it's a common problem as the insulated axle that holds the wheels apart splits, which means the wheels are no longer held firmly. I haven't fixed mine yet, but I believe it is possible to buy replacement axle parts.
Thank you, I have been getting this feed back from people. I need to get the parts to fix it but will have to do it in the future when I have the time.
Great video what the model cnc milling machine you use.
Thank you, It is a machine that I have made myself.
Great job on that loco Tris, and you must sort out the wheels so that you can run it regularly. It's too nice, and you've put too much work in, for it to just sit on a shelf! Good shots at the Bluebell too. Given that it's less than 10 miles from where I live, and yet I've not been for almost 50 years, I'm disgusted with myself! Will get along there soon.
Hello Kevin, I think you should get over there I would love to have a railway so locally. Thank you for your comment I would like to fix it, I’ll tackle what’s wrong with it sometime as it’s a lovely loco. Take care 😊
As already mentioned, the wheels coming apart is because the axle has shattered, I had this problem with my V1 and luckily I have just gotten a 3d printer so I mocked some up and printed them. I posted the stl to thingiverse and it should be compatible with your V2 if you still need to fix it
Hi Enjoyable video including real and model locos. Bachmann will sell you direct spare axles to fix your wheel issue. They are not expensive and it is an easy fix. The old plastic ones suffer from fatigue and stress poor design.
Thank you. I will be looking into getting the loco fixed.
Another great video Tris and nice work on the locomotive. Peters Spares makes replacement axle sets for split chassis locomotives and Bachmann also still do some spares for them. I have a Lord Nelson class and one of its axles has started to split but I’ve stuck some epoxy on it for now as it hasn’t completely gone. It is a common problem I’m afraid.
That’s excellent I will have to get some, it’s nice to know it’s not a random thing I’m facing. Thanks for the support as always 😊
Nicely done Trist!
I got some older diesels I plan to fix up and upgrade however the "Pancake" style motors in some of them I was told are not really ideal for DCC, but I will see what happens.
That would be interesting to see how well they run.
Great work! The wheel issue is likely to be a broken axle, a common fault on split chassis loco's. I had it on a Hall I bought, but they were easily replaced with a set off ebay
Thank you James, I need to get it sorted as I have had quite a few people explain the issue too. I hope to get it sorted at some point.
Astonishing ! The CNC part always amaze me.
By the way, your model have a swivelling rear pony truck, not like the brand new that will be sold in some weeks (blind rear axle)...
Thank you I'ts nice that you appreciate it. I guess I have the better model ;)
Hi Tris. I just love your engineering skills. Weathering: Not a big fan, but if you're going to do it, then go light.
Thank you Paul, yes weathering is the first step to possibly ruining the loco so lightly done is my way at the moment.
I've got the newer (non-split chassis) version of this V2 and with a bit of weathering is now a beautiful loco. With the new Bachmann model being given an RRP of £200 - 230 your older model is worth the TLC you're investing in it. You're so close to getting a cracking loco there, for the sake of a well-documented repair to the wheels. As someone else has mentioned Peter's Spares offer the replacement plastic wheel unions for a few £, but as you're such a whizz with the 3D printer could you rustle something up on that? Enjoying the channel Tris so keep up the good work. All the best - I'm off to give my V2 a quick run around the layout.
that locomotive you weren’t sure about is a Billinton E4. last surviving one, actually.
Thank you for letting me know.
Awesome work! Love the perfection. Do you do commission work by any chance?
Thank you, I am afraid I do not have the time but its a complement to be asked.
After you use the airbrush to add weathering, do you clean the wheels? And if so, how? Cheers from Wisconsin.
Normally Isopropyl alcohol and/or a fibreglass pen.
Was the model DC before you transformed it? And great job?
Thats correct, I wanted to figure out how to make a split chassis DCC.
I had a V2 that did what yours did - sadly it was a time before 3d printers were available! the wheels sit in a plastic collar which will have cracked, hence the wheels coming out. I imagine it'll be a simple 3d print to copy the old ones and slot your wheels back in!
Great thank you for the advice I will be looking into it 😊
Great work on the V2. The split front wheel is a pain though 😒 An after thought with the 3MT and 4MT, a number of them worked along the Cambrian Coast line in the 1960s which was also were the Dukedogs and 43xx ran. I know the liveries are different but a nice link between some of your classes of engines, therefore an excuse to get a 3MT
Thank you 😊 I’ll get it fixed I hope. I think I’ll find an excuse to get one. It hasn’t stopped me with other locos 😁
20:29 my dad saw that engine not too long ago, he was just driving and it showed up alongside. He sent me a video
Excellent!
Certainly put hornby to shame with the tender lol
Thank you Ashly
It's great if you have the tools. But so for many.
With no CNC use a Jewellers saw :-)
Was it worth it?????
A good question.
I could say no just buy the latest one and save yourself time but is that all there is???
It's evident you are a very creative and skilful person annd in doing this project you gained more experience so was it worth it and was it satisfying is obviously a yes.
I'm old and there are things i do like build brass O gauge loco kits that can frustrate me at times.
My brother has a 3d resin printer and also a,laser cutter for wood, he tells me i should get one, my answer is it's one thing to have the printer and another to use the and master the software that drives it.
You are obviously a person with skills to do this, so was it worth your effort???
Think of the experience you are gaining?
Tris with your skills I’m sure you can sort and make the loco perfect. Why pay £200 quid for a new one when yours just needs a bit of tlc. 👍🚂👨✈️
Exactly there is alot of money to be saved if you do it this way.
Just subscribe
Great!
Another great video, thank you so much. I notice that on the train running part of it, the trains appear to jump every few seconds (or my eyes do). Charlie Bishop did a really helpful video (all his videos are really helpful) on videoing and he covered this effect. The video can be found here th-cam.com/video/6qKWXQgunjs/w-d-xo.html and I wondered if it would help make your great videos, perfect. I hope this helps.
